Community Routes: Recent Episodes

Samuel Richards, Julie Richards, Sarah Wakefield

This is a podcast filled with therapists, psychologists, authors, and regular people where we talk about mental and emotional health. We take complex topics and break them down, often over snacks and coffee. Our goal is to provide free, digestible mental health discussions to help build a more healthy, supportive community. Join Samuel, Sarah, and Julie every other week on Tuesdays at 7 am (or whenever you feel like listening)! Our segments: “Off the Beaten Path” is a special episode that features interviews with the community. ”Unpack That” involves discussing books and concepts about mental health. ”Trail Mix” takes a variety of concepts that are asked to the cohosts and discussed as a group. ”Deep Breath” is a shorter, brief mental message for the week.

Join Samuel, Julie, and Sarah as they dive into the fascinating topic of the unconscious. Julie discusses how what we are conscious of is a small amount of what is going on in the mind (the number will surprise you). We dive into a new part of the brain (the thalmus) and discuss its relation with the amygdala. How does this unconscious play a role in our thought processes? How are we allowing the unconscious to open up to us in the moment? What does my unconscious need?

Learn all that and more!

Join Samuel, Julie, and Sarah for their group thera-I mean "Trail Mix" episode as they discuss a plethora of real life applications. We talk Sarah's boundaries and Samuel's awareness.

Was there a boundary that you solidified recently? What was the result?

Is there something that you’re becoming more aware of? Something to be curious about?

The beauty of trail mix is that you take what is relevant to you. What is your nugget to take away?

Join Samuel, Julie, and Sarah as they chat with author and psychologist Karen Young. We have a dedicated episode to Hey Warrior and you might have heard her name mentioned on here in the past. Karen brings her passion for mental health in children. We talk a variety of engaging topics like how we can talk about complex things by starting conversations or how emotions are hard when we feel lonely in them. This is definitely a must-listen-to episode.

Make sure you check out Karen's website and her new book!

Join Julie as she covers "Childhood Disrupted: How Your Biography Becomes Your Biology, and How You Can Heal" by Donna Jackson Nakazawa. As you can tell, there is a lot to "unpack" here, so this is definitely an episode to check out!

Julie talks about the linkage between our experiences as a child and how that impacts our adulthood. This book is great at linking ACEs and the physical imprint that trauma leaves on our brain. Sit down, enjoy a hot drink, and let Julie unpack "Childhood Disrupted!"

In our 10th episode we finally revisit boundaries. Boundaries are key for maintaining a healthy mental outlook in your day to day. Julie says boundaries are "where you end and the world begins." Understanding your limitation is a benefit to yourself and everyone else, even if it means saying "no." We discuss the protective and the containing parts of boundary work so that you can be secure and connected.

What is the first step towards healthy boundaries? Can boundaries ever be unhealthy?

I am so excited to publish this episode about our 5 birthrights and a return to Pia Mellody's Model. This episode is critical to understanding the perspective we bring to the table at Community Routes. This whole episode is full of personal breakthroughs for Samuel and Sarah as we tackle some significant topics. What rights are we owed as humans? Where are we wounded?

As Julie will cover, "to look at these core issues is not to blame, but to get our story straight."

PS. Check out the graph we talk about on Julie's website!

Join Julie as she unpacks Ross Greene's book, Raising Human Beings: Creating a Collaborative Partnership with Your Child. While this covers parenting, Julie talks about how this applies to everyone; we all have an inner child to nourish. Julie goes over our "littles" and a cohesive sense of self. It's about being able to see and support the person in front of you; not forcing them to be what you want them to be. This is a fantastic episode!

Exclusive: Julie also shares her secret note-taking color code (spoilers: orange is a key thought and pink is favorites. Keep an eye out for them!)

Hey neighbors! Life has been a roller coaster the last few weeks, but I wanted to reach out and share my thoughts about "Hey Warrior." It's an awesome book that encourages learning about your amygdala so you can better control your anxiety, depression, or similar body reactions. Part 2 of our COVID-19 discussion as we check in about what has been the hardest part for us personally, what has been helpful, and what we are learning through the quarantine. We process the exhaustion and stress, how to care for ourselves in the midst of it all and find post-traumatic growth through resiliency in the long haul. Our gratitude and relational connections help keep us strong in knowing that we are not alone. Join us for words of wisdom from Bruce Perry, Maya Angelou, Stephen Porges, and the Polyvagal Theory as we learn how to navigate through trauma.   Questions to ask: What has been the hardest part? The most helpful? What are you learning?   Link to article: http://www.sfu.ca/olc/blog/my-ssp/mental-health-wellness-tips-quarantine   Link to Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/communityroutespod   Our other links: https://linktr.ee/communityroutes

Hey all,

We are so excited to be back!  We fired up the ol' laptops and recorded from home.  This week is a lot to process, so don't hesitate to take a break during the episode to take a deep breath, drink a glass of water, or to take a walk outside. I hope in this time of uncertainty that our episode is helpful in describing some of the emotions we go through during crises like this.

Love from me and the whole crew

Hey neighbors!

We are sending our love to the CR community and the world, as we all are impacted by the coronavirus. We will be on the air again in April.

In the meantime, I would encourage you to listen to the original three episodes of Community Routes.  They're our older episodes, so they still have the radio interruptions, but I thought this series was relevant to what we are all going through. We made these episodes to help combat an emotional crisis.

Please reach out on Facebook, Instagram, or Email to talk!

In this episode we unpack some of the behaviors we see on the surface when children and adolescents experience anxiety, as well a lot of overwhelming feelings that are stirred up underneath. We give practical phrases to give support as parents or teachers offering a safe space to kids and teens when they are overwhelmed. We look at anxiety through the lens of secure attachment to help co-regulate emotion in this hyperaroused state outside the window of tolerance.
