The final installation of the "Robot Trilogy" of Candela demos. In this restoration, I really wanted to just up the fidelity of the mix, and not poke around too much in the original MIDI. Well, I may have fixed a drum fill or two...
The demo itself, if somewhat rough around the edges, really felt like the culmination of the formula we established with Fair Play To The Queen, but with a proper ending. Always nice.
Maybe it's only obvious to me, but I always imagined that most of my funky / bluesy / jam session tracks are played by the same band, faffing about while waiting for that diva singer to show up.
The goal of resurrecting this old track was to give the solo lead a more robust backing, and the organ accomplished that quite nicely. The solos are pretty much untouched, except for some vibrato and note length tweaks. This was also a great excuse to dive into Harmor resynthesis, importing the actual single-cycle waveforms used in the XM.
All in all, I think the band has matured a lot since 1996, wouldn't you agree? =)

It's just one of those songs you can't get out of your head. The insistent beat, the staccato cello, Robyn's awesome vocals. It struck me that this song was really a sparkly J-Pop wolf in sheep's clothing, and that you didn't even need the acapella -- just throw more synths on it! It didn't take long to map out the song, and once I'd made the B-chorus I knew I had to finish it.

It's remake time, folks! Didn't manage to find the original release date for the song, but my best guess would be somewhere around 1996 or so, going by samples and technique.
Usually, these remixes are a juicy stew of old and new -- I always start with bounced tracks from OpenMPT, and replace things like kicks and basses to clear up the mix. In this case, however, almost nothing survived since the mix was such a mess. The most rewarding part came when I finally nailed the drums (four layers of full kits!) and got to work on the brass. The song really came alive at that point, and the rest of the time was spent fiddling with the organ, which was the major copy-paste offender.
Oh, and the name differs slightly from the original, to avoid infringing on the trademark of a certain fast food chain.

A medley of some of my released songs. This track is a continuous work in progress, not likely to ever be finished.
The last part (07:30) is an adaptation of Fair Play to the Queen, and was added as a tribute to a dear friend (and a huge presence in the Swedish demoscene) who passed away in May 2015.
Rest in peace, Retro.
