Happy gold medals top Africa! And happy new episode to you! The only podcast certified to be played by Motswana sprinters before beating arrogant Americans brings you something different. Today, Dan & Phil cross over to Kenya to speak to former radio host, entrepreneur, and podcast host Adelle Onyango. Almost 3 years ago, Adelle hosted us as guests on her HUGE podcast Legally Clueless (you can find the episode here), and it was our pleasure to return the favour and speak to her in this week’s episode. Adelle tells us her inspiring story, starting as a (struggling) poet before making her way to radio, and building the 3rd biggest show in the country before leaving once again to start a company and a podcast. Adelle is also actively involved in the protests in Kenya, in fact, she had just arrived from dodging police and teargas for the recording! She shares the story behind the reason for the protests and how Kenya’s youth are leading the charge. What an inspiring episode, enjoy!

Comrades, in what is becoming a tradition that is becoming uncomfortably too common, we are mourning the loss of another artist. On Friday, February 10, 2023, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes (AKA) was shot and killed in Durban in what appears to be a targeted assassination.

We are all pretty shaken up about it, as we both knew AKA and his team. We had both bumped into him on multiple occasions since this chat. Most recently Phil caught up with AKA at his Platinum Plaque party for Lemons (Lemonade) 2 months ago. At that time it certainly did seem like AKA had turned Lemons into Lemonade and reinvented his career, which makes this loss all the more tragic.

Our thoughts are with his friends and family. We will discuss this in more depth on our main show but we wanted to repost this conversation from 8 years ago to highlight just how far he had come as an artist.

We are also aware of the accusations against AKA, both old and new. We touch on these in the episode and will discuss them in more detail next week.

Goeie dag vriende en kamerade! As we round up the year we wanted to recap one of our favourite interviews from 2021. Earlier this year we sat down with Aymos to talk about the nebula toll of lockdown, being broke but and famous, and how best to deal with the mental toll of being an artist. To his credit Aymos was very open with us about his experience and it made for a great interview.

There’s a lot more to talk about, including a review of the SAMAAwards, racist restaurants in Zimbabwe, and an answer to the question: “How many sports should be played at the Olympics, really though?” And a treat too because the team gets to chat with dope artist Bonj from South Africa. In our mental health segment, in addition to addressing your questions, our 2 distinguished guests, Dr Nyarai Paweni andintegral coach Shungu Chirunda, also give their professional take on the Naomi Osaka situation. In a tough week for podcasts in general (see The Joe Budden Podcast and that other one that’s being sued by Bonang in South Africa), the 2 Broke Twimbos are back with a new episode of the only podcast to not feel the need to use the word “allegedly”. Dan & Phil decide to do everything possible to also get their podcast trending: discussing opinions on Israel and Palestine, telling stories about Bonang, trying to fire Godwins empty chair. Are we trending yet? Of course, the mental health segment is a strong one, as couples therapist Peter Muhwati joins our resident mental health expert Dr Nyarai Paweni of Wired 2 Love & Thrive to discuss relationship stress. And of course, there’s new music to review, enjoy!
