1 in 10 people will have plantar fascitis sometime in their life. But foot health isn't really something that we women think about on the day-to-day.

Ladies, we have so many shoes to keep up with. And a lot of those, you know the ones I'm talking about, the red bottoms, the heels, the stilettos. They can be really killer to your feet!

Let’s face it: Life is something we all makeup as we go along. No matter how carefully we formulate a “script,” it is bound to change when we interact with people with scripts of their own.

Our guest's book, "Improv Wisdom"  shows us how to apply the maxims of improvisational theater to real-life challenges—whether it’s dealing with a demanding boss, a tired child, or one of life’s never-ending surprises.

Patricia Ryan Madson distills thirty years of experience into thirteen simple strategies, including “Say Yes,” “Start Anywhere,” “Face the Facts,” and “Make Mistakes, Please,” helping readers to loosen up, think on their feet, and take on everything life has to offer with skill, chutzpah, and a sense of humor.

Patricia is a professor Emerita from Stanford University where she began teaching in 1977. In the Drama Department, she served as the head of the undergraduate acting division and developed the improvisation program. She founded and coached the Stanford Improvisors and taught beginning and advanced-level courses in improvisation for undergraduates as well as adults in Stanford's Continuing Studies Program.

Are you holding your breath, even just slightly? Are you leaning forward, tensely anticipating the next problem to land in your email inbox? Most of us, without realizing it, hold our breath while we’re at our desks or at work. Take a moment now to lean back in your chair and take a few deep slow breaths. Shallow breathing while we’re responding to emails is just one of the many ways in which we’re unconsciously contributing to the stress response in our bodies.

Personal and societal stress add up in our bodies every day. We wake up with it, carry it with us like heavy luggage, pile on more throughout our daily routines, and wrap ourselves in it as we fall asleep. Even if we are not aware of it.

New York Times best-selling author Dr. Elissa Epel is back with a plan to turn stress into strength in her new book, THE STRESS PRESCRIPTION: Seven Days to More Joy and Ease. As a leader in the fields of stress and biological aging, she is acutely aware of the ill effects of stress
on our health. But her research also explores how we can transform our relationship to stress—how we can stress better, viewing stress as an exciting challenge rather than a threat, and how we can find true relief from feeling overwhelmed.

Over the course of 7 days, THE STRESS PRESCRIPTION will transform our stressful lives into a more regenerative joy that helps us surf the daily challenges and experience deeper rest states.

We've been sold a load of nonsense about getting old. Our guest calls it "utter rubbish." And yes, she's British.

We've been sold a load of nonsense about getting old. Our guest calls it "utter rubbish." And yes, she's British.

Rachel Lankester, is an author, podcast host, midlife mentor, and founder of Magnificent Midlife, an online hub helping women over 40 thrive through the often messy middle of life, so they can ditch negative narratives about aging, feel great, and create the next chapter of their dreams. She's the author of Magnificent Midlife: Transform Your Middle Years, Menopause and Beyond and host of the Magnificent Midlife Podcast. She’s also the editor of The Mutton Club online magazine for women 40+ which is where it all started!

Given an initially devastating early menopause diagnosis at 41, which ended her dreams of a second child, but which she was able for a short while to reverse, Rachel uses her experience to help women thrive through the menopause transition and feel better about getting older. Her mission is to challenge overwhelmingly negative narratives about midlife, menopause, and aging in general and give women more control over their hormones. She wants women to be prepared, not scared.

A woman's worth is often based on her fertility. And once you hit that critical stage, menopause, ageism kicks in fast.

But guess what?! Aging isn't something just old people do. We're aging from the minute we're born. Hell, we're aging before we're EVEN born!

So why is there such a negative narrative surrounding aging? And how can we change the cultural perspectives, especially when it comes to aging women?

Well, Ashton Applewhite is just the person to help us out. She is an author and activist, and a leading spokesperson for a movement to mobilize against discrimination on the basis of age.

She and Dr. Pam discuss ageism, what determines a woman's worth and value, the myth of "independent living," as well as 55+ living environments.

Although some are child-free by choice, many others are childless by circumstance and are struggling in a life they didn't foresee.

Most people think that women without children either "couldn't" or "didn't want to" be mothers. The truth is much more complex. Jody Day would have liked to have had children, but it didn't work out that way. At the age of 44, she realized that her quest to be a mother was at an end. She presumed that she was through the toughest part, but over the next couple of years, she was hit by waves of grief, despair, and isolation. Eventually, she found her way and created the Gateway Women Network, helping many thousands of women worldwide.

In this episode, Jody shares her perspective and tips for grieving your childless life, dealing with the stigma that surrounds women who aren't mothers, why we're seeing more childless and childfree women, and growing older without children.

Turns out, loneliness is a huge issue in the United States. The average American only has one close friend, and 75% of people are not satisfied with their friendships. The planet is filled with people who feel like they don't matter. That's pretty bleak, right? Yet this feeling is rooted in something even deeper and more primal than a need for conversation. What we really desire is intimacy, and to feel like we belong. In order to make that happen, we need to fundamentally change our social lives.

Jillian Richardson is a coach, bestselling author, and connection expert. She’s also the founder of The Joy List, a weekly newsletter of community-centered events in NYC. That is the mission behind Dr. Nina Kraus' work, to remind us of the power of sound. She says scientists have trouble communicating their research to the masses, and she wants to help us fully understand the sonic world we live in.

Nina Kraus, Ph.D., is a scientist, inventor, and amateur musician who studies the biology of auditory learning. She began her career measuring responses from single auditory neurons and was one of the first to show that the adult nervous system has the potential for reorganization following learning; these insights in basic biology galvanized her to investigate auditory learning in humans.

In her latest book In Of Sound Mind, Dr.Kraus examines the partnership of sound and brain, showing for the first time that the processing of sound drives many of the brain's core functions. Kraus does on to explore what goes on in our brains when we hear a word--or a chord, or a meow, or a screech.

One of the oldest and most controversial debates of our time centers on what foods will lead to slim, healthy lives. One of the oldest and most controversial debates of our time centers on what foods will lead to slim, healthy lives. Americans have waged national campaigns against fat and carbohydrates, tried every conceivable diet, and taken multivitamins in an attempt to satiate our hunger. And yet all our attempts continually fail us, why? Because we’ve left our brains out of the equation.

In his latest book The End of Craving: Recovering the Lost Wisdom of Eating Well, Mark Schatzker explores why Americans crave more but enjoy less compared to other nations, and how we can get back to a more healthful and pleasurable way of eating.

Schatzker traces the origin of our dysfunctional relationship with food to the turn of the last century when a mysterious pandemic called pellagra was raging simultaneously in the American South and the north of Italy, food addiction, binge eating, and real food vs fortified food.

Mark Schatzker is the author of The End of Craving, The Dorito Effect, and Steak. He is a writer in residence at the Modern Diet and Physiology Research Center, which is affiliated with Yale University, living in Toronto.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Carpenter’s research has focused on preventing breast cancer through identifying non-hormonal treatments for menopausal hot flashes. She created and tested ways of measuring hot flashes, created and tested theories to use in research, and has tested treatments for hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Hormones control so much more in our bodies than we give them credit for.Hormones control so much more in our bodies than we give them credit for. Thyroid hormones give us energy, insulin regulates our blood sugar, and of course, there are our sex hormones. And the food we eat can affect these in huge ways!

Early menopause can occur in women as young as in their twenties, resulting in hot flashes and other uncomfortable side effects. A new study to be published by the North American Menopause Society in the October issue of the journal Menopause finds that a plant-based diet rich in soy can significantly reduce hot flashes.

Neal Barnard, MD joins us this episode to talk more about this study. He is president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, founder of the Barnard Medical Center, an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

His federally funded diabetes research revolutionized the nutritional approaches to type 2 diabetes, and he now aims to empower readers with life-changing information on hormones and health.

The study is already online and can be read here.

We talk a LOT about women's health, menopause, and hot flashes on this show. But hot flashes happen to men too! Who knew?!

Jeffrey Marchi is a San Francisco native, with a career history in computer programming & at IBM.

But Jeff is on the show today because he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010. He had surgery and a few years later radiation because the cancer came back. In 2017, Jeff started on a medication called Lupron - which is well known for causing hot flashes. He suffered greatly with continuous hot flashes for about a year - until he found out about Depo-Provera which can greatly reduce the incidence of hot flashes for men with prostate cancer. Four years later (early 2021), he started another medication called Zytiga - as his slow-growing cancer had reoccurred. That greatly increased the number of hot flashes along with the intensity.

It was in 2021 when he was also introduced to the Embr Wave device which can stop hot flashes as they occur. This has helped him greatly, and it stopped the hot flashes from being a major limitation in his life.

He joins us today to talk about finding treatment as a man with a "women's" health issue, regulating body temperature with the Embr Wave, and battling prostate cancer.

We burn 2,000 calories a day. And if we exercise and cut carbs, we’ll lose more weight. Right? Wrong. We burn 2,000 calories a day. And if we exercise and cut carbs, we’ll lose more weight. Right? Wrong. In this paradigm-shifting book Burn, Dr. Herman Pontzer reveals for the first time how human metabolism really works so that we can finally manage our weight and improve our health.

Pontzer’s groundbreaking studies with hunter-gatherer tribes show how exercise doesn’t increase our metabolism. Instead, we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level. Hunter-gatherers like the Hadza move about five hours a day and remain remarkably healthy into old age. But elite athletes can push the body too far, burning calories faster than their bodies can take them in. It may be that the most spectacular athletic feats are the result not just of great training, but of an astonishingly efficient digestive system.

Dr. Herman Pontzer joins Dr. Pam today to talk about this research. He is an Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University and an Associate Research Professor of Global Health at the Duke Global Health Institute, as well as an internationally recognized researcher in human energetics and evolution.

The best place to be during this pandemic is outdoors (if you're doing it correctly).

But even something as simple as going outside is still a bit confusing: do I need to wear a mask outside? What about if I'm riding my bike? And what happens if someone jogs by me a little too close?

Gretchen Reynolds is back on the show to help us sort these new rules out when it comes to exercising in the pandemic. She writes the "Phys Ed" column for the New York Times which posts online as part of the "Well" blog and also appears in the print edition of the paper's "Science Times."

We talk so much about preventing COVID-19 or how to tell if you have it. But what happens once you recover if you do get it? How does your life and body change after this unprecedented illness?

Well for some, those post COVID conditions include Dysautonomia. Now, what is THAT?!

Lauren Stiles founded Dysautonomia International in 2012, after her own battle with the condition. She sustained a severe head injury at the age of 31, which left her bedridden for two years with no clear diagnosis and no effective treatment. She was eventually diagnosed with an autonomic nervous system disorder.

She joins Dr. Pam to tell us more about what these disorders are, a similar condition called POTS, and raising awareness for these relatively unknown conditions.
