They come to Greece and head straight for the showstoppers. Mykonos, Santorini, maybe Paros or Naxos if they’ve done their homework. But Syros? It rarely tops any tourist bucket list. And that’s precisely what makes it extraordinary.
Because while the other islands dress up for summer and then quietly fold themselves away come autumn, Syros stays wide awake. Elegant, grounded, and beautifully honest. It doesn’t change the costume. It doesn’t pretend. It doesn’t close its shutters and vanish when the ferries slow down.
Syros lives.
And it lives not for show, but for its people, its rhythm, its traditions. And the quietly observant traveler who finds their way here, not chasing parties or social media sunsets, but something more lasting. Something genuine.
Most people dreaming of Greece imagine the blue-domed churches of Santorini or the carefree, champagne-sprayed days of Mykonos. I understand that. They’re beautiful in their way. But my Greece, the one I carry in my bones and offer to those who trust me with their travels, is quieter. It’s found in places where time slows down and the sea sings softly to the shore, not in clubs or Instagram feeds.
Over the years, I’ve watched guests come back from these lesser-known islands of the Cyclades with salt in their hair and wonder in their eyes. And every time, I smile because this is the Greece I long to share. Not the one on every postcard, but the one that feels like coming home, if home were a wind-swept, olive-scented dream.
People love to say Italians “just throw on a linen dress and look chic.” Ah, if only you knew how many mirrors, steamers, and quiet muttered prayers go into that “effortless” look before stepping out the door.
If you’ve ever wondered why Italians look so good in summer, let me tell you: it’s not magic. It’s not luck. It’s not even the linen. It’s intention, pride, a pinch of practicality, and a sprinkle of va bene, let’s live today beautifully.
And yes, it’s also a refusal to let the Mediterranean heat reduce us to sweaty, shapeless blobs in neon sports shorts.
It begins as a gentle zzzz. You think it’s the power line above your head, or maybe a passing scooter. You sip your iced coffee, adjust your sun hat, and decide you’re imagining things.
But you’re not.
Because in Greece, when summer truly arrives, the cicadas arrive too—nature’s most relentless DJs—ready to blast their one-song playlist from dawn until dusk (and if the night is hot enough, all night too, just in case you forgot they exist).
It starts with a single cicada. Always one. Testing the microphone around midday, like the world’s tiniest, most persistent DJ, cueing the soundtrack of summer. And then, suddenly, the choir joins, and the Mediterranean hums to life, vibrating under the sun, asking you—politely, insistently—to slow down.
I have lived entire afternoons wrapped in that sound, on a balcony in Naxos, under a fig tree in Puglia, with salt on my skin and sticky peach juice on my fingers. If you have spent any real time under the Mediterranean sun, you know these sounds are not background noise. They are life itself.

I am fairly convinced that if you ask frequent visitors to Ibiza what you should do and see when visiting the island, they will only be able to propose clubs, restaurants, beaches, and perhaps some shopping. This is the dismal reality of the present. Ibiza is a unique location with a lot to offer, but according to modern trends, it is the only place to go for a high life. Ibiza is without any doubt a famous tourist destination renowned for its stunning beaches, and lively nightlife. But this is not all. Most definitely not. Ibiza does have a long history that spans back to antiquity, and throughout the years, several civilizations have called the island home.
