My father loved watching Muhammad Ali! One of his favorite quotes was, "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!"
Did you know that elephants are scared of being stung by a bee? Well, I want this elephant to be afraid of me, so guess what? I’m gonna float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.
Who knows, it just may run when it hears me buzzing!
I never get tired of shining a bright spotlight on this elephant in the room, you know, the one I call the gender pay gap.
In many ways this elephant is a bully. And as bullies do, they pick on the little people, those they think are weak, someone who won’t fight back but turn tail and run.
But we are not of those who shrink and slink away in fear.
No, I am not afraid of this bully. I want it to be afraid of me. When the gender pay gap sees me coming, I want it to run in the other direction, screaming as it runs headlong right out of my territory.
I want it to be afraid to pick on you too!
As an insider, you have a room with a view into your employer’s pay system.
Being informed will help you be better armed to navigate the system, especially when it comes to negotiating your next pay raise.
If you are a female leader, you have a broader view. As you move higher within an organization, your view becomes even more expansive.

The gender pay gap affects managers and non-managers alike. Those who have direct reports, as well as those who don’t.
A lesser-known fact is that female managers earn 90%, on average, of what male managers earn. That means there’s a gap of 10%.
You may be thinking, “Girlfriend, say it ain’t so!” Yes, unfortunately, it is so.
