Our relationship with alcohol becomes strained in midlife. The body is undergoing a lot of changes and alcohol can often be the final straw in a cascade of pressures on health and vitality. This week, I'm delving into the impactful journey of Laura Valvasori, a business and well-being mentor who made the decision to transition to an alcohol-free lifestyle.

But what do we do when a glass of wine is so ingrained in our culture and habits around socialising, relaxing and even connection? Laura's strategies set the path for maintaining friendships while transforming your relationship with alcohol.

What I loved about Laura's perspective is that she guides women to understand why they might choose to live alcohol-free clearly, creates the structures to try this on for a time, and then make a choice based on your experience and findings - this is so different to while knuckling going alcohol-free for 30 days for example - and I believe is the secret to her success.

In our discussion, Laura shares her initial feelings of loneliness when she first quit drinking and how she used non-alcoholic alternatives to stay engaged during social gatherings.

We explore the physical symptoms and misalignment in her life that led to her decision and how she continued to have an active social life without feeling deprived.

Join me as we unpack the conversation around giving up alcohol and the pivotal moments that led Laura to create her program, "Still Me, But Alcohol Free." We delve into the emotional and physical shifts experienced after going alcohol-free and the importance of documenting alcohol-free experiences to reinforce new beliefs about fun and socializing without alcohol.

Laura's insights provide valuable support for women navigating midlife, menopause, and the decision to shift to an alcohol-free life, offering a strong foundation for behavior change.

Join us as we explore Laura's journey, providing invaluable insight and guidance for women seeking to create a change in their relationship with alcohol.

About Laura Valvasori:

Laura Valvasori is a Business & Well-Being Mentor, the Author of Good to Grow: Cultivate Your Mindset and Habits to Thrive as an Entrepreneur, a Certified Emotion Code Practitioner, and the creator of the Still Me, But Alcohol-Free program.

Like many women, in her early forties, Laura started feeling like alcohol was no longer agreeing with her body and drinking was starting to feel out of alignment with her otherwise healthy lifestyle.

After hitting a breaking point, she decided to "try on" going alcohol-free in a quest to feel better. Today, over 3 years later, she lives happily alcohol-free. She is now passionate about sharing what she's learned to guide other women through the journey of shifting to an alcohol-free life.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS:

Still Me, But Alcohol-Free is a 6-week program, designed for mid-life women, to guide you through "trying on" going alcohol-free with the right mindset, tools, and support to help you be successful. The program is available in a self-guided format or group program with the next group program starting September 23rd, 2024.

"I was much more able to access that vitality and that passion and joy just through being alive. Not because anything incredible had happened, but just from being alive."
In my early adulthood, I became really good at tolerating stress and distress—a skill that served me well at the time. But what if that excessive tolerance is now draining your vitality, joy, and life satisfaction?

We all have blind spots, that is the nature of being human, and in this episode I open up about my personal journey through perimenopause and midlife, sharing my own blind spots and how I came to see things with fresh eyes.

We explore the fine line between healthy distress tolerance and what I call "maladaptive tolerance," where psychological endurance starts to hold you back.

We discuss the difference between resilience and chronic distress tolerance, and how it might be keeping you stuck, limiting your ability to make meaningful changes in your life.

We also examine where you might tolerate too much, missing opportunities for greater vitality and passion.

This episode is all about regulating your tolerance to distress and bringing it back into the zone of vitality.

Ready for an eye-opening conversation? Let’s dive into the episode, and let me know what you think! I'd love to hear if you have a similar experience.

"The goal is to empower women to nourish their bodies for the long term, rather than relying on restrictive diet plans and experiencing guilt and shame."This week, I had an inspiring conversation with Kendall North, a holistic dietitian who is reshaping the way women approach their health and well-being during midlife. Kendall is a leading NZ registered dietitian, integrating her extensive professional background; spanning health, nutrition, dietetics, fitness, education, & culinary specialities.

We delved into the societal pressures on weight control, especially during perimenopause, and the importance of addressing the underlying emotional and nutritional needs rather than solely focusing on weight loss efforts. Kendall emphasized the need for a mindset shift from weight loss to overall well-being and gratitude for our bodies.

Kendall's insights on the interconnectedness of physical well-being, nutrition, and energy levels truly resonated with me, sparking a deep conversation about the impact of undernourishment due to years of dieting and restrictive interventions.

Kendall and I shared personal experiences and discussed the need to listen to our bodies, embrace self-compassion, and nurture a positive relationship with our bodies, regardless of physical appearance. It was a heartfelt discussion that emphasized the liberation and empowerment that comes with embracing our authentic selves during midlife.

Kendall delved into the consequences of poor nutrition and the challenges of cognitive distortions around food and weight loss. It was a powerful reminder of the significance of nourishing our bodies for long-term well-being and the journey towards liberation from societal expectations.

Our conversation left me feeling open and connected to gratitude for my physical body, so grab your headphones and be inspired by Kendall's advanced perspective on weight, diet and nutrition.

"We have this innate natural connection to our inner knowing and our gut instinct. However, here is the problem for us - historically, that's not been okay.""I am disconnected from my inner knowing." This is a far-too-common experience for us, so this week on the podcast, we delve into the deep journey of reconnecting with our inner wisdom and gut instinct during midlife and menopause.

I share personal experiences and insights, we examine how the historical suppression of women's intuition has impacted our modern-day connection with inner knowing.

Amid the hormonal flux and psychological changes of perimenopause, many women feel a disconnection from their intuition, leading to dissatisfaction and uncertainty about their path and life choices.

However, this stage also holds immense potential for rekindling our relationship with our inner wisdom, leading to profound shifts in perspectives and life choices.

I also offer a journaling prompt to help you embark on the journey of self-inquiry and rediscovery of your innate knowing.

Journal Prompts:

Reflect on a time when you felt strong gut instinct or inner knowing about a decision or situation. And then write about how you responded to that feeling. And what was the outcome? What can this experience teach you about trusting your intuition more now in your current stage of life.

Join me in exploring the transformative potential of tapping into our gut instinct and inner knowing during midlife, paving the way for greater self-trust and clarity.

The reality of healing is that we learn not to abandon ourselves and stay connected, even in difficult moments."None of us are immune to harmful inner dialogue - words we would never say to a friend, or even an enemy! On this week's episode, we dive into why self-talk is important, how it shapes our beliefs, emotions, and actions, and the roots of our inner dialogue.

We're not just talking about affirmations here, but the deeper psychological patterns that influence our relationship with ourselves and the world.

We explore the impact of self-talk on our worthiness, resilience, and overall well-being, providing you with the tools to build a healthier mindset and approach to self-talk in this vibrant second chapter of life.

This week, I’m sharing a personal journey that led me to change my mind about hormone replacement therapy (HRT).I used to have a strong bias toward natural medicine and was hesitant to consider HRT, but a synchronistic experience opened my mind to new possibilities. I'll dive into why I initially hesitated to take HRT, what changed my mind, and how it has impacted my life.

We'll also tackle some common misconceptions and biases around HRT and explore how we can embrace both natural and mainstream medicine to thrive in midlife.

As women navigating menopause and beyond, we often encounter the complexity of managing our health during this transition. In this episode, I uncover the reemergence and effects of trauma in perimenopause, menopause, and midlife.

"Just because you're experiencing this now, it doesn't mean that it's going to be with you for all of your life."In this episode, we explore the unusual and unexpected fears that arise during perimenopause and postmenopause, drawing from conversations with other women and personal experience.

We cover common fears such as driving, flying, health, and mortality, explaining that these fears are a normal part of the menopause transition due to hormonal changes, and we discuss why they might get progressively worse in perimenopause.

I share strategies for managing these fears, including professional support, mindfulness, and medical treatments like HRT. Knowing what causes these fears to worsen in perimenopause helps manage them, and knowing that we are wired to get happier as each decade passes - especially once on the other side of postmenopause, helps to put these fears and anxieties in their place.

"Our goal in midlife is to navigate those physical symptoms well, to understand what's happening with our brain and to navigate that well with whatever support that we need so that we can step into this next phase of life, which can be incredibly empowering, incredibly vital and filled with so much meaning and purpose."

Don't miss out on this deep dive into the complexities of midlife fears and anxieties. Tune in to gain a better understanding of these common experiences and discover practical ways to navigate them with confidence. And remember, you're not alone in this journey. Let's navigate midlife together.

"With HRT, it was like a switch. It was in 3 days. My symptoms had improved and I was coping with my life so much better."If you live in New Zealand and use HRT, you'll be aware there is a shortage, and with no quick solution in sight, I was grateful to speak with Rene Schliebs on the podcast this week.

Rene is a clinical nutritionist and medical herbalist with over 20 years of experience in women's health. She has a special interest in empowering women on their menopause journey. And what I loved about Rene is that she advocates for HRT to reduce symptoms in peri and post-menopause as well as supporting clients with natural medicine.

The topic of our conversation this week is navigating medical treatment options to easily empower women to converse with their GP like a pro.

We cover how to prepare for your GP appointment, the HRT options available in New Zealand, what to do if your needs are not being met, how to navigate the current HRT shortage in New Zealand, and what to do if you have pre-existing health conditions - hint they don't necessarily preclude you from benefitting from HRT.

Join us as we explore the increasing demand for HRT and the need for greater understanding and support for menopausal women's health needs.

The Effects of Emotional Dysregulation: "You'll have difficulty connecting your emotional world with your rational logical brain. All the choices that you make will be based on emotion and much of it will be subconscious."The emotional template we received growing up will have us swinging wildly between two polar emotional opposites. The first being emotional suppression, unconsciously walling off our emotions and keeping them hidden (or trying to), and the second leaves us at the whim and control of our emotional energy, which often leaves us a puddle on the floor and feeling like an emotional wreck, unable to balance our head and our heart.

This week, I'll be delving into emotional resilience, particularly during midlife and perimenopause. As we navigate this transformative stage of life, it's crucial to understand the impact of emotional conditioning on our well-being.

From societal cues to family dynamics, we've been taught to either suppress our emotions or be overwhelmed by them, both of which have profound effects on our physical and psychological health.

Join me as we unravel the complexities of emotional resilience and its connection to hormonal shifts during perimenopause.

I'll be sharing insights into how we can rewrite our emotional experiences and cultivate a healthier relationship with our emotional selves.

This phase of life presents an opportunity for deep internal change, paving the way for authentic confidence, emotional regulation, and empowered decision-making.

Are you ready to reclaim your emotional empowerment and thrive in the vibrant second chapter of life? Tune in as we unlock the path to emotional resilience and celebrate the transformative journey of midlife and beyond.

"But I think over overthinking and procrastination and that all or nothing thinking is definitely something I see a lot with clients that have this limiting belief."I've got such an incredible episode for you this week. Take your time to listen to it. It's a little longer than usual. It's actually come from an Instagram live with Justine Jetty. Now you may remember Justine from a previous podcast episode very recently. She's a nutrition and exercise coach, and she's an incredible force of inspiration.

Well, Justine interviews me and we have this fantastic, unmissable conversation all around limiting core beliefs, specifically the limiting belief that is, I am not enough and I am not good enough, which resides at the core of every single person I've worked with, including myself.

We discuss our challenges with our self-worth, confidence, our capacity to really show up in life in the way that we want to, as well as the connection of shame to this limiting belief of 'not good enough'.

Here are some key takeaways for you:

🔑 It's a Journey, Not About Perfection: Justine and I emphasize that the journey of healing and growth is not about achieving perfection. It's about acknowledging our vulnerabilities and embracing the process of transformation.

🔑 Managing Discomfort: We discussed the importance of not letting negative thoughts be in the "driver's seat" of our lives. Finding ways to manage and tolerate discomfort is crucial for personal development.

🔑 Training the Mind: Rather than relying solely on affirmations, we emphasize the value of training the mind through repetition. Addressing underlying subconscious beliefs is essential for true transformation and growth.

I encourage you to tune in to the full episode to explore these vital topics further and gain insights that can positively impact your journey to self-acceptance and empowerment. Let's continue to support each other in cultivating a mindset of resilience and growth.

"Simply telling people to love their bodies without addressing underlying psychological and external influences can be harmful."A woman's relationship to her body is incredibly complex, our body is appraised, viewed and judged from the day we are born.

So it's no surprise that women find it challenging to cope with the physical changes that come with midlife on a psychological level.

"Midlife, particularly menopause transition, is the second highest at-risk time for women to develop eating disorders."

My guest today is Emma Wright. Emma is a Body Freedom Coach who shares her own journey with disordered eating. She talks about how she overcame this challenge and completely transformed her relationship with her physical body, appearance, and overall wellbeing.

Emma addresses society's influence on women's perception of their bodies, the harm these perceptions cause as well as how these perceptions shift during menopause. She provides practical advice and valuable tools to help women feel comfortable in their bodies, irrespective of their stage in life.

Emphasizing the importance of healthy boundaries and improved inner dialogue, the episode also shatters harmful societal perceptions of ‘brokenness'. The conversation further explores the link between midlife changes and eating disorders, reassuring women that positive change is possible and that well-being goes way beyond physical appearances.

Join this thought-provoking session with Emma Wright, as she shares her journey from battling an eating disorder to embracing body neutrality. From her motherhood-inspired quest to dispel body and food myths, to her strategies for cultivating a healthy body image, Emma's story is a beacon of inspiration for women navigating through similar struggles.

About Emma Wright:

I help women, leaders, and parents find freedom from intrusive thoughts about their bodies. I also seek to make the world kinder, safer, more inclusive and accessible to all bodies, not just the ones that look like mine.

The Untold Power of Menopause and ReinventionIn midlife, we often feel disempowered due to various factors such as symptoms of perimenopause, changing roles, and the burden of doing so much for others. Feeling lost during this phase is a common experience.

However, this is actually the MOST empowered time of your life to redefine who you are and how you show up in the world. And we will dive into how to go about it today on the podcast.

Let's challenge societal norms surrounding midlife and unveil the empowering process of self-discovery. This shift involves a transition from societal conditioning of appearance and value to a profound self-appreciation of our unique attributes and individual presentation to the world.

We explore the societal pressures that persist but also highlight the genuine change that starts WITHIN, impacting not just personal development but societal perceptions as well.

Midlife often comes with feelings of invisibility and diminished worth. Instead of succumbing to these cultural pressures, we're going to explore and redefine your value system from an external to an internal locus. Through this shift, we begin to center our value on who we genuinely are and what we uniquely offer the world.

And we venture into the upgraded opportunities available to us during this stage of life. Hormonal changes not only contribute to significant physiological transformations but also set the stage for accelerated personal development. Midlife is not the winding down phase it is often perceived to be; instead, it's a powerful launch pad for a life of meaningful change and growth.

Challenge societal expectations, embrace your wisdom, and liberate your genuine self because midlife is just the beginning of your most empowering journey yet!

In this episode, we look at the physiological changes that women undergo during perimenopause and early menopause and how these shifts can be a catalyst for a big awakening. Discover how discomfort can lead to growth, and how by embracing new behaviour and activities, you create a bigger life and prevent contraction and stagnation as you age. Tap into the power of the midlife shift, and start recreating yourself. Remember the thrilling question of adolescence - 'Who will I be in the world?' – and revive that quest in midlife. Replace your self-imposed labels, and commit to finding out what truly matters to you. Our task is to reevaluate and reshape our self-identity at this time, liberating ourselves from societal conditioning and labels.

Merge with the ever-evolving journey at midlife, understand the beauty of the 'undone-ness' of life, and discover your authentic, joyful, and passionate self. Explore the notion of death and rebirth within relationships, redefine your roles in life, and dare to step into the 'slipstream of nature'. Prepare yourself for this powerful new beginning, where you are free to choose and stay true to your path.

Join me in celebrating midlife as a phase full of potential for growth and transformation, not an ending, but a powerful beginning. This episode is not just a conversation, but an invitation to a more authentic and vibrant self in midlife and beyond.

In this revealing episode join me as I unravel my journey through trauma, Crohn's disease, menopause and the lessons learnt in becoming resilient. This episode provides a deep dive into the crucial role of emotions in defining our life experiences, especially the turbulence that often arises in midlife, menopause, and beyond.

I share my challenges with emotional dysregulation, dissociation from feelings and the aftermath of trauma. These narratives underline my connection with my own emotions and how changing HOW I relate to emotions was pivotal in my journey of resilience and healing.

We're not here for toxic positivity, and I underline the importance of acknowledging our own range of emotions, both positive and negative. The episode underscores the necessity of self-understanding and maintaining a connection with our 'feeling selves'.

Midlife women's strength is their superpower! In this episode, I chat with Fiona Ross, a great friend and colleague. We explore the importance of lifting heavy (for you) weights and finding the right exercise routine for strength, confidence, and ageing well.

We share our personal experiences and address the complexities of midlife changes, resilience, and wellness among women. Fiona candidly discusses how menopause impacted her fitness and nutrition routine, and the proactive steps she took to ensure her wellbeing.

This revealing talk explores not just physical changes, but the equally significant emotional and intellectual aspects of this stage in life.

And of course, we debunk some ageing myths and risky quick-fix solutions surrounding menopause, emphasizing the need for self-awareness, patience, and careful experimentation.

As the discussion deepens, we cover critical aspects of fatigue, its impact on women, and how to manage it effectively. The importance of staying active via the correct exercise for you, along with the need to pay attention to individual needs and capabilities.

Also addressed are the psychological and emotional aspects involved in ageing and midlife transition. We talk inner peace, satisfaction levels, and the priceless wisdom gained over the years.

"I would say it it felt like I was getting my power back in the sense of Yeah. Prior to that, I was like, well, what am I doing wrong? What's happened? And it did knock, you know, my self esteem, and I also was very conscious of working with my clients and thinking, if I can't, excuse my language, short sort my shit out, then how am I supposed to help these people that are looking for advice?"

Waves of irritability and anger used to come out of nowhere.I was in the beginning phases of perimenopause and these mood fluctuations were an unwelcome surprise, I'd had some experience of them as a teen but I had no idea irritation, anger and even rage are common symptoms of perimenopause.

We go into why this happens in perimenopause and midlife, how to tackle these surprising fluctuations in mood, and when it's time to seek professional help.

While anger is frequently regarded as negative, especially for women, I discuss how to harness the transformative nature of anger as an agent of change, promoting self-awareness and self-acceptance, and why it's so important at this time of life.

By unmasking anger as a signal of boundary violations, and a force for personal evolution, it supports women to express emotions transparently and directly.

"If we know we're in perimenopause and this is happening, and we know that this is a common symptom of perimenopause, then how we respond to that, how we react to that, and what we do to support ourselves when this is showing up, it's going to be very different."

Midlife can be a massive opportunity for growth and evolution and when you know how to work with anger to create change you create an empowered second stage of life.

In this episode I challenge common misconceptions around life purpose, emphasizing that it's not solely about achieving specific outcomes but rather about finding meaning, value, and connection in our daily lives.

I also give examples of outcome and achievement-focused purpose and why it's a problem. The role of your ego when it comes to purpose and how taking a 1,000-foot view can offer a life changing reframe around finding and living our life's purpose!

As we navigate midlife and its hormonal changes, I explain why this is a valuable time for self-reflection and embracing a deeper sense of purpose that aligns with our authentic selves, as well as how nature helps us with this task.

Join me on this inspiring episode as we bust some myths, and explore, recontextualise and reframe the concept of life purpose!

Journalling Prompts:

  • What activities or moments bring me the deepest sense of fulfilment?
  • How do my values align or clash with my daily choices and actions?

Ditching Shame & Challenging Stigma in MenopauseIn this episode, I dive deep into the whole issue of shame, specifically how it affects women during the menopause phase of life. I talk about the stigma attached to menopause and how it impacts us, both emotionally and psychologically. Through the conversation, I emphasize the need to break down these barriers, embrace the changes and challenges, and reach out for the right support, like from medical professionals and menopause support groups.

I stress the importance of understanding that it's okay to seek help and that we shouldn't blame ourselves for the physical and emotional changes we experience during this transition. Also, I talk about letting go of societal expectations and radical acceptance, and the need to reach out to others and seek professional support during this transformative phase.

Many women find midlife difficult, and I'm not here to deny our challenges. But I also know in the bones of my being that midlife is just the beginning and that you're about to embark on the next and possibly most empowered stage of your life.

When I work with women in midlife, I look for common threads in how we talk about our experience, because ultimately the words point us to our inner experience and how we can break free!

I often hear my group program participants say 'I'm not where I want to be!' during The Midlife Upgrade Course.Feeling stuck, lost, and unsure of your life's direction are all such common experiences for women in midlife, that just hearing other women express similar frustrations is supportive in and of itself.

And I think we can go a step further and shoot for a psychological reframe which emphasizes the importance of accepting where you are and letting go of self-judgement or comparison to societal expectations.

Easier said than done, I know, but I hope that this episode where I reflect on my own journey and not being where I want to be as I hit my 53rd birthday, will give you an experience of support and inspiration.

When my doctor told me that I was post menopausal at the age of 42, the first thing I did was wonder what I'd done wrong and blame myself! In this empowering episode I share my own menopause experiences and delve into the guilt and blame often associated with challenges faced during this stage of life.

I challenge the notion that lifestyle changes alone can alleviate perimenopausal symptoms for all women, and emphasize the need to prioritize ourselves.

We explore coping mechanisms like people-pleasing, perfectionism, and avoidance, and how they hinder self-growth.

I emphasize the need to shift from trying to fix yourself to taking care of yourself - and why this matters, and how this perspective shift builds resilience to navigate the unpredictable hormonal shifts of perimenopause.

Have you ever felt misunderstood or unsupported by those around you when it comes to your emotional experiences in midlife? In this episode, we explore the changes in our emotions during perimenopause, menopause, and midlife.

Fluctuating estrogen levels can lead to irritability, tearfulness, low mood, and anxiety; that was certainly my experience in perimenopause.

And to make things more challenging, often we don't know that perimenopause is the cause of the emotional upheaval!

Though the emotional terrain of perimenopause and midlife is rocky it's important to remember that you are not alone and that open communication and sharing experiences can relieve some of the burden.

It's important to understand the connection between our physical and emotional selves, this allows us to make room for all emotions, question our thoughts, and accept that we don't have to fix our feelings immediately.

Ending the Stigma Around Menopause Across GenerationsMy mum never talked to me about her difficult experience of menopause, she struggled in silence.

So I never knew what to expect, and I never got to be there for her when she was struggling with menopause symptoms either.

I didn't know how old she was when she went through it - I've often wondered if we were around the same age, but I'll never know, since she passed away 8 years ago.

In this episode I explore (and rant a bit) why it's so important to open up the menopause conversation!

We're dismantling generational stigma and shame as we acknowledge 📣 World Menopause Day on October 18!

This week on the podcast we delve into the topic of menopause-related anxiety.During perimenopause, anxiety can sneak up on us, building slowly, or sometimes hitting like a bolt of lightning!

Studies show 50% of women in midlife experience symptoms of anxiety. Often this isn't talked about, either because women are too embarrassed, or because they believe that there is no help and they need to suffer through it.

Understanding hormonal connections, and destigmatizing menopause-related anxiety is crucial if we are to navigate this period of life feeling empowered.

The hormonal fluctuations of perimenopause cause significant shifts in the brain (much like puberty) and the lowering of estrogen can give rise to symptoms of anxiety for many women.

Anxiety can be experienced as physical symptoms including:

  • Fast heart rate
  • Heart palpitations
  • The feeling of sickness or nausea
  • Shaking or tremors
  • Sweating
  • Dry mouth
  • Chest pain
  • Headaches
  • Fast breathing
  • Panic attacks

There is support available - whether through lifestyle changes, natural remedies, or professional guidance. Always talk to your health professional if in doubt.

Understanding the context of anxiety when we are in midlife is important, as this impacts how best to manage the symptoms.

I hope you find this episode on menopause-related anxiety useful!

Ditching The Diet Culture: Redefining Wellness In MidlifeWhat if, I wondered, as a woman in midlife, I ditched the diets and body shaming culture? Would it affect my motivation to take care of myself? And would I turn into a 24/7 TV-watching puddle of blah?

I had an enlightening podcast chat with Michelle Yandle Nutrition Coach about her no-BS and no diet approach to eating and health.

After years of yo-yo dieting Michelle ditched the diet train and improved her health and wellbeing by doing so.

Michelle emphasizes that it is natural for women's bodies to change as they age and that we should not strive to look like our younger selves. This took me a few years to get my head around, and Michelle was the catalyst that helped me change my thinking around weight and health when I was in peri-menopause.

Michelle shares her personal journey of overcoming restrictive diets and embracing a non-diet, intuitive eating approach that promotes health without shame or guilt.

Michelle sheds light on the prevalence of disordered eating and the impact of diet culture during this stage of life. They stress that weight gain can be natural and healthy for midlife women, contrary to societal beliefs.

We talk about the deeply ingrained influence of diet culture on women's perception of our bodies and how it affects navigating changes such as perimenopause - and how we are both approaching this as women in midlife.

Listen in as we explore the terrain of unshaming our bodies, what we eat, and who are in midlife!

This week on the podcast, we discuss radical body acceptance during midlife and menopause. We are bombarded with societal pressures and cultural conditioning related to aging and body image.

When we critically evaluate the messages we receive from media and online sources, we can embrace our changing bodies and challenge the outrageously incorrect notion that women's value diminishes with age.

By practicing radical acceptance and empowerment, and rejecting the idea of trying to reclaim a past version of ourselves, we are more able to nourish our body, stay active, and receive our self-worth from a place of genuine self-acceptance and empowerment.

I believe this journey towards radical acceptance is an ongoing and courageous rebellion against ingrained stereotypes and societal expectations.

By dismantling cultural conditioning and embracing our authentic selves, we reclaim confidence, courage, and vitality.

How to Tame Midlife Stress with Nervous System Wisdom Let's dive into the topic of midlife stress and how to find a sense of calm amidst the chaos.

As women in midlife, we often face self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and overwhelm.

In this episode, I explore why anxiety, stress, and overwhelm tend to increase during midlife, specifically during perimenopause, and menopause.

Did you know that approximately 86% of women experience mental health issues in midlife?

If you've been noticing an increase in anxiety and stress, remember that you are not alone. Many other women are going through similar experiences. We look at the physiological changes of menopause, hormonal fluctuations, and their relationship to anxiety.

One interesting insight is that anxiety tends to be worse in the morning due to the stress hormone cortisol. Levels of cortisol are typically highest in the first few hours after waking, and these levels can be even higher for women experiencing perimenopause.

The societal and cultural pressures surrounding midlife can amplify feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. By challenging external expectations and societal beliefs, we can create a shift and empower ourselves during this important stage of life.

Understanding our brain and central nervous system allows us to take a closer look at our stress response and find ways to support ourselves during this time.

If you're ready to discover practical tools and strategies to navigate midlife stress, grab your headphones and listen in!

Learning from Failure: Navigating Emotional Cycles and Expanding Perspectives Let's dive into the concept of unarmoring the heart and emotions in midlife.

Armouring occurs when incomplete emotions become sort of stuck in time after an emotionally challenging event, such as failure. And then form an energetic rigidity around the heart and emotional self.

We explore the true meaning of failure compared to our emotional response when facing an unsuccessful experience.

Failure is not a reflection of your worth. It's a natural part of the journey towards success, growth, and evolution.

Being armored is the leftover, unintegrated emotional experience, and prevents joy, happiness, love, courage, and connection.

Feeling stuck in life and relationships is normal during midlife, but it's also a sign of armoring around the heart and emotions and may be a signal that there is some inner work we can do.

Completing the cycle of emotions after failure allows us to approach our experiences from a constructive and supportive perspective. It's important to process emotions that arise from failure, allowing oneself to feel disappointment while not letting it affect self-worth.

Showing up fully as yourself in life may feel uncomfortable and scary, but it leads to fulfillment and embracing your true self.

Unarmouring the heart in midlife is a transformative experience that allows us to once again show up with vitality and inspiration.

Our purpose in life is to continually show up more fully as ourselves, embracing vulnerability and playing at the edge of personal evolution.

Join me on this episode for valuable insights and tools for unarmoring the heart and living life to its fullest potential.

Learning about the fawn response was a light bulb moment for me as I recognised myself in its descriptions, providing an understanding of my people-pleasing tendencies and avoidance of conflict.

We are a multitude of parts, with a central core self. Understanding these psychological parts, and which ones are in charge in different situations, leads to greater psychological freedom.

I studied Subpersonalities or Parts work during my Psychosynthesis counselling training and working with them was at the foundation of my work as a counsellor.

Parts work is an incredible tool for self-development and personal growth. By understanding the activated parts within us and their underlying motivations, we gain greater freedom and awareness.

I share some personal moments where I’ve been challenged in conflicts and outline what was going on for me on a parts level at that time.

As we understand our psychological parts better we are able to work more skillfully with our automatic reactions, slow down these reactions, and even choose to respond differently. Within each part is a need and a gem of a quality, and by bringing greater awareness to these aspects of self we are able to unleash our own inner superpowers!

Listen in as I share my own experience with parts work and how to get in touch with your own psychological parts.

Midlife opens a door for a positive shift in self-confidence and assuredness but very often for women, the opposite is true.Perimenopause causes physical challenges for many women, but what is not often talked about are the mental health issues that arise.

Quite often they are first to raise their heads and are mistakenly viewed as being problems in their own right instead of symptoms of early menopause.

While physical symptoms like hot flashes are commonly discussed, the psychological challenges arising during perimenopause, such as depression and anxiety, are not given enough attention.

These symptoms can significantly interfere with our work and businesses. Unfortunately, there is a lack of open information on how to support women through perimenopause in the workplace.

In this episode I talk about my experience with these challenges, and why it’s important that we debunk societal stigmas, and encourage open discussions to ensure women receive the necessary support and understanding during this phase of our lives.

We are far more empowered when we focus on our psychology and mindset through midlife through the lens of our changing body and brain.

Join me as we bring these subjects out into the open and step into a powerful phase of life.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Nicola Swanson, a Medical Herbalist and Naturopath based in Taranaki. During our conversation, we delved into various topics such as food, supplements, and herbs that can help ease the perimenopause journey. We also discussed how to identify if the symptoms you're experiencing are actually perimenopause, and what to do if your at-home interventions aren't enough.

Nicola shared a wealth of tips and tools to alleviate menopausal symptoms and maintain our health in post-menopause. Her insights were inspiring and made me realize the somewhat negative effect coffee was having on my body, which I had been conveniently ignoring. Thankfully, Nicola came to the rescue with some great replacements I can use during my coffee “pause”.

Nicola is a strong advocate for women to be the best, most empowered versions of themselves, in body, mind, and spirit. Her enthusiasm for our potential wellbeing during this time of life is infectious.

So tune in to our conversation as we cover a wide range of topics related to perimenopause; from sex and urogenital issues, to the role of easily accessible food and herbs in nourishing our changing body.

How to get an infinite supply of confidence in midlife.

There are many reasons why your confidence and self worth might take a dip in midlife.

What I've discovered from working with hundreds of women is that during midlife there is a reset that is possible in terms of our confidence and self worth. And self doubt increasing, confidence decreasing are signs that you are ready for this midlife reset!

During this reset, the foundation of your confidence shifts from external sources to internal ones. This means that you no longer rely on external validation to feel worthy, as your confidence stems from the infinite wellspring of yourself.

I believe this is such an important piece for us as women in midlife to understand and to work with!

Listen in to discover how I help my clients achieve this transformation.

For most of us life and business show up very differently to the get rich quick story we are fed on social media.

And if you are in the helping professions - bodyworker, healer, therapist, creative, you went into business because you wanted to help others, and express your creativity in the world.

One of the gifts of being a small business owner for me has been that I’ve got to (had to) heal my relationship with money, specifically at the intersection of money and spirituality/service. This has required that I look at beliefs, money trauma, privilege and gender bias. I firmly believe being in business is a powerful personal development journey because your goals require that you become the best most authentic version of yourself.

This week I talk to Jane Chevalier from Circular Path Consulting. Jane is a consultant who helps bodyworkers and healers wanting to pivot their business away from solely hands-on work, to leverage their skillset and find greater financial fulfillment within their wellness business.

We talk about fears, burnout, and our relationship with money. We discussed how this often shows up as undercharging or struggling to generate a profitable business… how we overcame that and what to do about it if you’re struggling with the same issues.

We also discuss how to recognise the value of your work and price your services in a way that will not lead to burnout!

I really loved unpacking that intersection of us as small business owners, healers, practitioners, spirituality and money, finances. Join us for this powerful conversation and see if it sets off any light bulb moments for you too!

In this episode, we dive deep into the topic of burnout and how to avoid it. We explore the root causes of burnout and how it's not just about the amount of work you're doing, but also your internal state while doing it. We also discuss how women over 40 are more prone to burnout due to hormonal shifts as well as the weight of societal conditioning.

To avoid burnout, we need to create an internal mindset/heartset shift, which has a flow-down effect on our nervous system and energy reserves.

Interrupting a burnout pattern requires rewiring our beliefs and automatic thoughts that are causing stress in our system, as well as considering other important factors which I cover in this episode. Only then can we start creating behavioral change in our external world that supports either repair or avoidance of burnout.

It is very difficult to get any traction with recovery from burnout if we try to implement behavioural self-care changes in response to feelings of burnout without first addressing the internal conditions that are present.

Purpose and Self DoubtIn this episode, I discuss the importance of connecting with our purpose and how it can help us shift our focus away from our blocks and challenges.

I share insights from my counseling training within Psychosynthesis transpersonal psychology, which emphasized the importance of focusing on a client's emerging purpose.

By connecting with our purpose, we become less focused on our blocks and suffering, and more on how we can serve and help others. I have turned to this perspective not only for my clients but also in my own life time and time again.

We talk about reframing self-doubt and imposter syndrome, that rather than trying to fix them, we should lean more into our purpose and carry them along with us as we go. Ultimately, connecting with our purpose can help us overcome our challenges and lead a more fulfilling life.

Hope you're inspired by this episode!

I recently chatted with Emma Perks, founder and owner of Full Circle Physiotherapy, about all the things she wishes she knew when she first started her business.

Emma has been one of the founding students on Impactful Women Program, a group coaching program lead by myself and Amy Luttrell.

We dove into the topic of money mindset, as well as how she overcame a negative tendency to avoid "the numbers".

One thing that really stood out to me was how being true to herself helped Emma’s business soar. Emma talked about how she used to try and fit a mold of what she thought a business owner should be, and she shared the funny story of how she let that go and embraced her authentic self.

It was such a valuable conversation and a great reminder that when we stop trying to be like everyone else and just be ourselves, that's when the real magic happens in business.

What does it take to go from idea to launch? And what are the mindset obstacles that show up between your inspired idea and actually bringing it out into the world?

Kate is a friend of mine and she recently participated in the Impactful Women Coaching Program. Amy Luttrell and I are co-coaches on this 3-month program that empowers women to dream big and take their business to the next level, free from self-doubt and fear.

In this episode, she talks about her experience in the program, the vulnerability that comes with launching a new business, and the surprises she encountered along the way.

We also chat about Kate's new business venture and that time coaching left her feeling all hot and bothered! It's a great conversation and I think you'll find it really inspiring and empowering.
