At age 37 in 2019 I became a young stroke survivor. Two months after that i was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in February 2020 right before Covid turned all our lives upside down.As a young stroke survivor, parent entrepreneur and coach. My goal is to help support other young stroke, survivors, and anyone who is really looking for solutions that work as they go through the recovery process, but mentally and physically from a major life event, such as a stroke or similar. No, two strokes or really any major life event are exactly the same, but there are some similarities, and one of the most difficult and overwhelming parts of the journey is figuring out how to navigate the next steps to go from "Good Enough to Unstoppable AF!There are lots of great doctors therapists, and well intentioned people trying to help however, in my experience, the best advice and lessons come from those who have been through it! I may not have all the answers, but three years into my recovery. I've done a lot of digging, questioning, researching brainstorming, exploring, experimenting, and now I want to share the struggles and successes of my second chance, so that you could also make the most of your second chance! There are no shortcuts or magic pills, but by sharing stories and interviews, and my own personal experience with both struggles and successes you'll be able to focus in on finding what really works for you in your recovery journey!

Welcome to 2025 and the first episode of the year! In this episode, I’m diving into the themes of responsibility and mindset in stroke recovery, inspired by Bill Gasiamis’s book, Stroke: The Best Thing That Happened to Me. One of the key takeaways I explore is the importance of avoiding rigid timelines in recovery to minimize frustration and disappointment. I also share my thoughts on how taking responsibility—while not blaming yourself—can be a powerful way to regain control and stay focused on progress.

I reflect on my own recovery journey, from managing expectations to setting goals that are flexible yet intentional. Recovery is different for every stroke survivor, but one constant is the need to lead your own path forward while using the resources and support systems available to you. This episode is packed with insights from Bill’s book, as well as my personal experiences navigating setbacks, lessons learned, and how I’ve applied these ideas to my life.

If you’re a stroke survivor, caregiver, or someone supporting a loved one, this episode will resonate with you. Let’s start the year strong, focused, and ready to tackle what’s ahead together.

This episode wraps up our week exploring the ego paradox and how it impacts stroke recovery. Ego is tricky—it can push us to make great progress, but it can also hold us back when we get in our own way. Whether it’s the drive to keep going or the frustration of hitting limits, managing ego is an important part of the recovery journey.

I reflect on some personal moments this week, including a frustrating recording process (yes, four takes to get this right) and how those challenges brought my own ego into focus. I also revisit earlier conversations, like my chat with Jason Lopes, where we explored the balance between determination and self-care, and the fine line between pushing forward and overdoing it.

In this episode, I share a few strategies for keeping ego in check, like tracking fitness progress, journaling, and setting realistic expectations. I also highlight some great resources, like Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday and Mindset by Carol Dweck, for anyone who wants to dig deeper into this topic.

Stroke recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, and understanding the role of ego can make the journey a little smoother. Let’s wrap up the week with practical insights you can apply to your own path.

  • Strategies for using ego as a tool rather than a trap during recovery
  • Practicing strategic humility and productive pride after a stroke
  • The importance of celebrating small wins and setting achievable recovery goals

I’ll share personal reflections on how ego has shaped my own stroke recovery journey and offer practical insights to help you find balance. Tune in to explore how to harness your ego to fuel your progress without letting it derail your recovery.

In this week’s Survivor Science Soundbite #5, I delve into Good Energy by Casey and Callie Means. This holistic guide to health and wellness offers valuable insights for stroke survivors, covering topics from anti-inflammatory foods to daily habits like mindful movement and improved sleep. While some advice may seem ambitious, it's essential to view the book as a long-term resource rather than a checklist for immediate action.

I'll share how my perspective has evolved over time, embracing small, incremental changes as part of the recovery journey. Recovery, much like health, is a marathon, not a sprint. Tune in for practical takeaways and a reminder that even small improvements can make a significant difference.

Additional Topics from Good Energy That May Interest Stroke Survivors:

  • The importance of gut health and incorporating fermented foods.
  • Tips for maintaining stable blood sugar levels for steady energy.

I also highlight connections with inspiring organizations like Stroke Awareness Oregon and Stroke Warrior Radio, share insights from survivor stories, and preview upcoming topics, including a conversation with Keith Ellis about long COVID and its impact on recovery.

This isn’t just about curiosity. It’s about the lessons we learn along the way and how we use them to move forward. Join me as I reflect on the week, share what I’ve learned, and encourage you to find your own sparks of curiosity in the recovery journey.

In Survivor Science Soundbite #3, I’m diving into something that’s been on my mind all weekend—curiosity. For me, curiosity might be the most powerful driver in my stroke recovery, pushing me to ask deeper questions, try new things, and shape a path that feels right for me. But is curiosity really the key to recovery, or is this just my own way through?

Join me as I explore why curiosity can shake things up, especially when standard approaches fall flat. I’ll share my perspective, and I’d love to hear yours too—how does curiosity shape your recovery? I hope this episode gives you something useful, even fun, to think about as we kick off the week together.

In this Survivor Science Soundbite, I’m following up on our discussion from Episode 1 about psychedelics and their potential role in stroke recovery. Earlier this week, we explored the emerging research on psilocybin, the active compound in ‘magic mushrooms,’ and its potential to support neuroplasticity, brain health, and resilience post-stroke.

Today, I’m sharing what I’ve learned since that first dive, including insights from The Psychedelic Handbook by Dr. Rick Strassman, and reflecting on the bigger picture of what psychedelics could mean for recovery. This isn’t about replacing the hard work that recovery demands; it’s about considering psychedelics as a potential tool to supplement the process. I also talk about my personal experience with SSRIs and the importance of knowing when certain treatments have served their purpose.

This episode is all about keeping the conversation open and understanding that every stroke recovery journey is unique. If you’re curious about what psychedelics could bring to the table—or if you’ve been putting in the hard work and wonder what else is out there—this one’s for you.

I’ll be back next week with more of these quick Survivor Science Soundbites and a full episode mid-week. Let me know your thoughts! What topics would you like me to explore? And remember, I’m just here sharing my story and what I’m learning along the way—always do your own homework and find what works best for you.

In this episode of The Lovable Survivor Podcast, I’m excited to sit down with Bill Gasiamis, stroke survivor and creator of the Recovery After Stroke podcast and YouTube channel. We dive deep into what it really takes to build resilience, how to navigate the day-to-day grind of post-stroke recovery, and the personal growth that emerges from facing life’s toughest challenges. Bill and I share the journey from our pre-stroke habits to the lifestyle changes that ultimately helped us rebuild our health and wellbeing.

Here’s what we cover:

  • Shifts in Health and Lifestyle: We talk about our pre-stroke lives, marked by habits like smoking, poor sleep, and the need to overhaul our health after these life-altering experiences. Bill shares how recovery became a catalyst for positive lifestyle shifts focused on wellness.
  • Resilience in Daily Recovery: We break down the repetitive routines required to make daily progress—even when it feels like “Groundhog Day.” Bill and I discuss ways to stay motivated through these cycles and celebrate small wins as milestones in recovery.
  • Breaking Down Recovery Myths: Recovery timelines can be tough, and the mental and physical demands are often misunderstood. Bill explains how his early lack of resources drove him to create Recovery After Stroke, supporting others with the information he wished he’d had.
  • Accepting Where You Are: Bill opens up about the philosophy of being “good enough” in recovery, focusing on steady, mindful improvements over chasing perfection. We both reflect on how embracing each stage of the journey brings a sense of peace and purpose.
  • And frankly, a whole lot more good stuff!

In this episode of The Lovable Survivor Podcast, I’m diving into a topic that doesn’t get enough attention—PTSD in stroke recovery. Recorded on U.S. election day, this episode marks five years since my own stroke, and I’m reflecting on how trauma has shaped my recovery journey. PTSD is usually associated with military experiences, but it can be a huge factor for stroke survivors too. It’s something I’ve dealt with personally, and I believe we need to talk about it more.

I share how PTSD emerged over time in my recovery, impacting both my physical rehab and mental resilience. From relearning to walk and eventually lifting weights and running, my journey has been an intense blend of physical challenge and emotional healing. I also open up about how mindfulness and self-compassion have been critical in pushing through tough days, as I’ve worked to balance recovery without triggering setbacks.

This episode isn’t about offering medical advice—I’m not an expert—but rather about opening a conversation around PTSD and the complex, sometimes hidden struggles of recovery. Whether you’re a survivor, caregiver, or someone navigating personal trauma, I hope my story offers some connection and insight.

Key Topics:

  • PTSD in Stroke Recovery: Exploring the connection between PTSD and stroke, and why it’s important to talk about this experience.
  • My Recovery Journey: From relying on a wheelchair to eventually running and lifting weights, balancing the physical and mental aspects of recovery.
  • Breaking the PTSD Stereotype: Recognizing that PTSD impacts stroke survivors and how it’s not just a military experience.
  • Upcoming Conversations: I’m excited to share some great interviews on the way, including an episode with Bill from Recovery After Stroke and conversations with Stroke

In this episode, I explore an essential yet often overlooked aspect of stroke recovery: knowing when it’s time to pivot. Recovery is rarely a linear process, and recognizing when to adjust your approach—whether in fitness, career, or personal growth—can be key to overcoming plateaus and reigniting progress.

I reflect on my own recovery and how hitting a fitness plateau led me to realize it was time for a change. By integrating weightlifting, kettlebells, and fitness technology like Whoop and Garmin, I’ve reinvigorated my physical recovery. I’ll share how these shifts have kept me progressing, both physically and mentally.

We’ll also discuss how family and personal growth play critical roles in recovery. It’s not just about physical progress; it’s about embracing change and finding growth in every challenge.

Additionally, I talk about my career pivot from psychology to an MBA, blending psychology with business to help survivors. This shift aligns with my goals and feeds into the exciting rebranding of the podcast under the Survivor Science umbrella. Future episodes will feature survivor stories and interviews, offering new insights and inspiration.

Key Topics:

  • Recognizing When to Pivot: How to know when it’s time for a change in your recovery or life path.
  • Reenergizing Fitness Post-Stroke: How weightlifting, kettlebells, and fitness tech can improve your recovery.
  • Career Shifts and Growth: My journey from psychology to business and how it shapes the future of the podcast.
  • Family and Personal Growth: The role family and personal development play in staying grounded during recovery.
  • Exciting Changes Ahead: What’s coming with the podcast’s rebranding and upcoming survivor interviews.

In this episode, I explore a crucial aspect of recovery that doesn’t get enough attention: the role of discipline, obsession, and curiosity in the long journey of stroke recovery. Having survived a stroke and now facing an MS diagnosis, I understand the level of commitment it takes to keep showing up, especially on the hardest days.

I’ll share how discipline has helped me push through when motivation was low, and how channeling obsession in the right way can lead to real progress. But it’s not just about pushing through—curiosity plays a big role in my journey, driving me to ask questions, try new approaches, and take charge of my health.

I reflect on the mental and physical hurdles I’ve faced, and how even small steps, like learning proper breathing techniques or sticking to therapy routines, have led to major breakthroughs. For me, recovery isn’t a checklist, it’s a lifestyle built on persistence and adaptability.

I also touch on a recent Joe Rogan podcast that got me thinking about healthcare. What if doctors were rewarded for outcomes, not just how many patients they see? This episode is a reminder to take responsibility for your health and stay curious, disciplined, and engaged.

Key Topics:

  • The Role of Obsession in Recovery: How I’ve used a focused, obsessive approach to drive my own progress—and how to avoid burnout.
  • Discipline as the Foundation: Why showing up consistently, even when it feels impossible, has been key to my recovery.
  • Curiosity Fuels Recovery: How asking questions and exploring new techniques has led to breakthroughs for me.
  • Balancing Drive and Rest: Why finding a sustainable pace has been essential for my long-term progress.
  • Ownership of Your Health: Why it’s crucial to take control, do the research, and advocate for your own well-be

*Detailed Summary:*

In this episode, I explore the often-underestimated role of Breathwork in recovery and overall well-being. Having weighed nearly 500 pounds at the time of my stroke, I've faced unique challenges in my recovery process. Today, I share how Breathwork not only became a cornerstone of my healing journey but also helped me cut down on medications and embrace physical activity.

We also delve into stroke causes, such as genetics and lifestyle choices like heavy drinking and smoking. It's important to remember that everyone's recovery journey is unique. I share my frustrations and the insights I gained, especially regarding the invaluable role of proper breathing for those with limited mobility.

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the barrage of advice during your recovery, you're not alone. I sift through what worked for me and what didn't, including well-meaning advice from loved ones that wasn't quite the right fit.

Exercise is now center stage in my life, a significant change from before. I discuss my evolution from being addicted to cigarettes and alcohol to making exercise a daily commitment. I also emphasize the importance of starting with what's achievable, consulting your healthcare team, and above all, being consistent.

Episode 23 of "Lovable Survivor," we talk sensory overload. Although it might not seem like your typical podcast chat, it's stirred up some compelling questions I'm eager to dive into in future episodes.

In my quieter, introverted days, sensory overload was a concept lurking just beyond my grasp. I could feel its presence, but couldn't quite put a name to it. However, it's now a significant part of my post-stroke journey. The ace up my sleeve? Nose breathing. Sounds deceptively simple, right? But let me tell you, it's a powerhouse for quelling those sensory storms.

Before stumbling upon Elyse's YT video, I had a vague sense that something was off, but I lacked the vocabulary to describe it. I used to bundle sensory overload in with the general whirlwind of being a stroke survivor. However, Elyse's insights helped me distinguish between the two, recognizing each as its own distinct beast. Getting back into the driver's seat in 2021, after almost a year in a wheelchair, was like a sensory overload crash course, and more this week!

Recap:- Never a dull moment in stroke recovery!
- We delved into the enigma of sensory overload after stroke or brain injury, with me sharing my personal experiences and strategies.
- I highlighted the value of techniques like nose breathing, adjusting home lighting, and maintaining regular communication with loved ones.
- I emphasized the importance of setting, tracking, and continually reassessing realistic goals.
- We discussed the pivotal role of caregivers and family in the recovery journey.
- Learning proper breathing techniques for better control
- Acknowledging imperfections but having tools to work on it
- Lack of recognition of sensory overload by non-stroke survivors
- Identifying sensory overload after seeing a video by Lisa
- Previously lumping sensory overload with general overwhelm as a stroke survivor
- Bombarded with information and therapy exercises leading to mishmashing and bad habits
- Difficulty with activities like holding hands and doing things due to stroke
- Actively working on overcoming difficulties and discomfort
- Awareness of overwhelming post-stroke experiences, particularly when driving again
- Importance of removing unhealthy habits from life
- Acknowledging areas for improvement, such as excessive computer use
- Uncertainty about difficulties due to stroke survivorship, MS, or both
- Experiencing heaviness in the head and needing to rest their neck later in the day
- Difficulty with eye contact but not impossible
- Importance of conversations with family, loved ones, and partners
- Frustration with brain moving faster than mouth after stroke or brain injury
- Need for slowing down and adapting after strok

Episode 20 of "Life After Stroke: Say 'No' to Negativity, 'Yes' to Daily Fun," the importance of humor and learning to say no when it comes to your recovery and life after stroke. In this episode, I delve into the healing power of humor and the crucial importance of maintaining a positive outlook during the daunting journey of stroke recovery.

I start by highlighting how humor has been instrumental in my life, especially during challenging times post-stroke. I share my personal journey with you, emphasizing how humor has been a powerful tool for making conversations about stroke less intimidating and more approachable. I firmly believe in the power of positivity, channeling energy constructively, and making an effort every day, which has made a significant impact on my recovery path.

As our discussion progresses, I share my experiences of the daunting task of relearning to run as a stroke survivor. I provide an in-depth account of the struggles and the resilience required to relearn mechanics such as foot placement, shifting body weight, and arm swings - things that were once easy and effortless, and have these days can be "unbelievably difficult."

Beyond personal growth, I also explore the power of community in this episode. I believe in the strength of collaboration, community-building, and regular self-check-ins. I share my plans to launch new collaborations aimed at making the recovery journey easier for everyone.

Closing on a high note, I emphasize the central role of fun in our daily lives. Inspired by Arnold's quote - if something isn't fun, we shouldn't do it - I urge listeners to really consider making this a priority, to seek out joy in everyday life, especially for those of us overcoming life-altering events like a stroke. Just a reminder because going through something like a stroke is incredibly difficult more so than most people, though, so what's the point of doing things after stroke that aren't fun if we're being honest with ourselves!

Episode 20 serves as a heartening reminder that humor, positivity, and a dash of fun can shape our recovery journey. Each journey is unique, and it's vital to celebrate our growth, foster meaningful connections, and always remember to have fun a good ass time I don't forget it's OK to say no sometimes even necessary!

After surviving a stroke, the social and emotional toll on a survivor's life is often overlooked, leading to sneaky changes and behaviors that are difficult to explain to loved ones. Overstimulation is often an issue, particularly early on that family members and friends won't understand, but should be made aware of, that way your desire to isolate is lowered because socializing is an important part of life and helps keep the brain active and you the survivor in a good state of mind over time!

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Gain insights into the emotional burden of strokes and improve communication for better understanding.
  • Delve into the behavioral and psychological shifts experienced after suffering a stroke.
  • Recognize the unseen consequences of a stroke that might impact daily life.
  • Emphasize the value of acknowledging cognitive and emotional hurdles in stroke recovery.
  • Enhance self-awareness and master the art of honest communication post-stroke.

The Overlooked Side Effects of a Stroke
Stroke survivors often experience emotional, psychological, and cognitive changes that may be overlooked in comparison to their physical disabilities. These invisible side effects can be equally devastating and challenging to overcome, leading to complex feelings of frustration, anger, sadness, and grief. Addressing these emotional responses is crucial in order for stroke survivors to regain a sense of control, adapt to their new circumstances, and work towards their own recovery. I encourage stroke survivors to recognize that their heightened emotions can be attributed to their brain injuries, which can, in turn, lead to better coping strategies and a more informed network of support.

Unspoken Emotions
For many stroke survivors, discussing their emotions is not an easy task, particularly when faced with the myriad of challenges and changes they are navigating. Unspoken emotions, however, can be detrimental to the survivor's well-being, causing increased stress and perpetuating negative thought patterns. Acknowledging and expressing emotions effectively is crucial for mental health and emotional healing.

For a good chunk of my life, I was the guy who didn't give much thought to the way I breathed. I'd always been a mouth breather, but I wasn't conscious of the potential effects on my health and well-being. It wasn't until I read Breath by James Nester that it all changed for me. I realized how much more there was to learn about nasal breathing and its benefits. Initially, I was skeptical - I brushed off the idea of breathwork as some hocus pocus trend. But as I delved deeper, I started learning about the science behind it and how breathing through our nose can have a significant impact on our focus, sleep quality, and overall health. It was like unlocking a secret I'd been missing my whole life. As I implemented nasal breathing exercises into my daily routine, I noticed a gradual shift in my energy levels, mental clarity, and sleep quality. It felt like I was finally giving my body the oxygen it needed to thrive. Now, I'm a firm believer in the power of nasal breathing, and I can't imagine going back to my old mouth breathing ways.

"Nasal Breathing has been a big eye opener for me."

The resources mentioned in this episode are:

  • Read Breath by James Nester to learn about the science and benefits of proper breathing techniques.
  • Visit James Nester's website for additional resources, including videos on breathing exercises.
  • Explore Patrick McKeown's Oxygen Advantage website, YouTube channel, and podcast for more information on improving your breathing.
  • Consider participating in Oxygen Advantage's certification program or live classes to further develop your breathing skills.
  • Try incorporating 10 minutes of daily breathing exercises into your routine to switch from mouth breathing to nasal breathing.
  • Experiment with different breathing techniques, such as Wim Hof method, to find what works best for you.
  • Leave a review for the Local Survival podcast on their website or on platforms like Apple and Spotify.
  • Be mindful of your breathing patterns throughout the day and make conscious efforts to switch to nasal breathing for a calmer mind and improved focus.

The Power of Nasal Breathing
Nasal breathing is a simple yet powerful way to enhance one's health, wellbeing, and focus by reaping the benefits of increased oxygen intake through the nose. Improved posture, better sleep, increased endurance, and better overall health are just a few advantages of adopting this breathing technique. Many people overlook the importance of proper breathing, but it can be a game-changer when optimized and given the attention it deserves.

Experience the potential benefits of medical marijuana, with a safe and regulated approach.

I learned about the potential benefits of Medical Marijuana from a conversation on The Lovable Survivor Podcast. Medical Marijuana can be used for a variety of issues, from pain relief to better sleep to anti-inflammatory benefits. It is important to do research and talk to doctors before trying it, as it can be hit or miss and there are different applications and strengths.

"If it's an option for you in your state or location, I think it's worth considering. I think it is definitely a conversation worth having on this show."

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. What are the medical benefits of medical marijuana?
2. How has medical marijuana helped those with a stroke or brain injury?
3. What are the unique challenges of finding the right strain and application of medical marijuana?

Other episodes you'll enjoy:
Episode 8
• Episode 7
• Episode 6

Chapter Summaries:

[00:00:15]
In today's episode, we're going to talk about a little something different friend. It might be a little controversial, but I think it is one that is worth having a conversation about. I think there are lots of opinions in this space.

[00:00:54]
This episode focuses on medical marijuana and some of the perks and pluses. "I think it plays a significant role in my stroke and my kind of medical journey of the last couple of years," says host. If it's an option for you in your state or location, I think it's worth considering.

[00:05:08]
Medical marijuana is now legal in the state of Florida. It's great for pain management and some aspects of the physical recovery. There are definitely many benefits, but it just depends on the individual.

[00:10:55]
For me, some of the potential benefits that I really have been interested in are the anti inflammatory, the pain relief. It's worth trying for any number of reasons, especially if you had a stroke or a brain injury. I'd like that it is somewhat regulated, obviously.

[00:22:03]
Medical marijuana is promising, but we're still in the very early days of this kind of this world. I have no interest in replacing or taking over any part of my life at this point. Some of the benefits I'm still looking for are getting off some of the medications.

The average stroke survivor is around 65 years old. There are lots of ways to navigate a stroke and stroke recovery process. Every stroke is different. My main focus is from people that are stable and well. Ultimately you want to live a healthy, enjoyable life.

[00:13:56]
Do not underestimate the power of both sleep and diet, but also breathing. My recommendation, again, is to look into nasal breathing. With a little bit of practice and some videos, you can really change your life.

[00:23:01]
Every stroke survivor's journey is unique and progress is not linear. There are peaks and valleys and plateaus, obstacles to overcome. There's a need for a larger communities of stroke survivors. The reason for creating Survivor Science is to help others going through a similar experie

Without a doubt the number one question by stroke survivors, caregivers, family, and friends is according to my experience and research is...

"How long does it take?" Unfortunately, you probably won't get the answer you're hoping for because that doesn't actually exist! But I do my very best to explain, as a stroke survivor myself all the factors that play a part so that you can make the most informed decision for you and your situation.

"It is going to be a lot of hard work, but it is worth it. Persevere and reassess your life, and you can make progress each day."

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. What is the biggest question survivors of stroke and brain injury ask when they begin their recovery journey?
2. How can stroke survivors make progress in their recovery journey, even when it takes time?
3. How does age and preexisting health conditions impact the process of recovery after a stroke or brain injury?

In this episode on I talk a little bit about why I started a community because it is not easy to navigate the stroke recovery process and of course. As with any question in life, the answer is it depends.

And I don't say that to sugarcoat things, I just want to give you the realist most true answer to this question, because according to every search engine and my own experience, it is the number one question, and also the hardest question to answer and get information on.

I explain why this is such a difficult question to answer without knowing each individual persons situation. Doctors, medical, staff, nurses, etc. Able to help answer questions, and I think at least here in the states, there is concern, sometimes of giving too much information or too little information without knowing all of the things that go into a particular situation.

Pre-existing conditions and residual effects of the stroke. Play a major part not just age and health.

In this episode, I walk through my first couple years and explain the peaks and valleys and plateaus and how are you address those you might do things differently that's certainly OK I even recommend it because you know yourself better than me I just shared my journey so that you have some indication of what it's really like from an actual stroke survivor!

As always, if you have any questions concerns, feel free to send me a direct message or email the show if you have a question you'd like answered on the show, you can go to the website and leave a voicemail or email the show as well!

There is the way people tell you it will go and then it probably would be amazing if it did go that way when returning to work after stroke or major medical life event. And to be quite honest, I hope it goes that way for you. I don't likelihood that it goes the ideal way is pretty slim.

The truth is without sugarcoating. It going back to work is going to be difficult for you for your family and for your employer. In this episode, we talk about the good the bad the ugly. There things that can make it easier for everybody involved and hopefully this is both hopeful and helpful.

It was not easy for me, but I really genuinely did not know how to navigate it very well at the time, and to be honest, I don't think any of us involved really had a clue just how hard it would be.

There are definitely some things to look out for along the way, and I try to highlight those in this episode.

The reality is, it is going to be one of the hardest challenge is your face of the many. Communication is one of the most important parts and if your company and you do it well in the beginning there is hope, but it does not come without a price and some learning along the way.

Chances are in this episode I over communicate and over explain but just know that if these things happen to me, they could happen to anybody, so I help is helps you get on the right path to returning to work if that impact is the goal, whether you stay working at the company you work for prior or you go onto another company or another profession and field I think all these skills are both able to be learned from and give you unique perspective as you more forward working in any capacity.

As always, please feel free to reach out to the show and let me know your experience. I am curious to hear of others have had similar experience and what are some things that you wish you knew sooner when it came to returning to work.

We'll see you in the next episode to touch on this a little bit, and share more insights and answer more questions about the process of stroke, recovery and the journey!

After having a stroke, you will hear well-intentioned but unhelpful comments from others. One common remark is, "Things aren't going to be the same." While this may be true, it doesn't provide any practical guidance or support for the survivor.

It's important to remember that you can't control what other people say or how they react to your situation. However, you can control your own thoughts and emotions. It's natural to feel frustrated or hurt by insensitive comments, but dwelling on them will only prolong the recovery process.

Some people may doubt your abilities or question your progress, which can be discouraging. Others may offer misguided advice or suggest treatments that have no scientific basis. While it's important to listen to the opinions of medical professionals and loved ones, ultimately, YOU the survivor know your own body best.

While people may say insensitive or unhelpful things after a stroke, it's important to focus on what you can control: your own thoughts and emotions. Surround yourself with supportive people, and trust in your own abilities to recover and adapt to the challenges ahead because the rest is just noise, and most people don't have a clue! As always, if you have any thoughts or suggestions questions are tips feel free to email the show I'd love to hear from you!

This episode takes a little bit of a different direction where I discuss a few personal wins, and how I prioritize those in the beginning! And how learning how to walk better sleep better eat better and breathe better got me on the path to better health and fitness!

Everybody says it takes time, and that is true, but the best way to go about things is to slowly chip away and make small, progressive steps in the right direction!

In my case, I learned very early on that the world is not really that accessible especially for wheelchairs so walking was my number one priority from day one yours might be different, but I think the approach still applies!

Last year I got around to reading breath by James Nestor and I discuss how breathing really was probably the most significant individual item that I dove into and learned about that has changed the trajectory of my rehab honestly, my life! My case in particular might have been extreme because I was a bigger guy who always mouth breath, and I really was unaware of the consequences of long-term effects of mouth breathing. Even nine months since I first started digging in to nasal breathing and learning from advanced instructors, Patrick McKeowan from Oxygen Advantage I've gone from just OK to amazing in terms of overall health circulation and now I'm even running and have been for 140 days!

Hopefully this episode gets you thinking and I'd love to hear what are some of your wins and fails and what's worked and what hasn't?

In this episode of the lovable survivor podcast, I talk a lot about navigating the family dynamics after a major medical Life event! There are a couple different groups involved the survivor, the primary and secondary caretakers, immediate family and extended family all want to help and it can be both challenging an overwhelming at the beginning! Every family is different, and nobody has all the perfect answers, but a highlight some things I did well some things I didn't, and some things I would do differently.

Family is always a complex situation and a major medical life event happening to a member of the family only adds stress and pressure in a time where coming together and collaborating is probably the most important along with patience and understanding!

This episode is designed to cover high-level for each part of the complex family dynamics, and how each can help assist and support one another throughout the process to ease some of the pain and inevitable tension that will arise during the process!

As always, I hope you find this episode, enjoyable entertaining and helpful and if you have any future topics, suggestions, ideas etc. please feel free to email the podcast at Podcast [at ] LovableSurvivor.com

When it comes to the early days of the survivor journey, there is no shortage of information coming your way as a survivor, a family member, caretaker etc. I won't even pretend in this episode it is easy to manage because it is obviously unique to everybody situation and telling you to breathe is just flat out. Ridiculous because it's important. Obviously it's better information on how to handle the early days, although it is important to breathe, because it is necessary!

In this episode, I try to highlight some of the things you or those around you may not recognize early on.

You're going to make mistakes nobody gets it right and it takes a lot of effort and energy on everybody's part to manage all the things!

Do not ignore your family, but also remember that you as a survivor our priority number one and that's true also of the caretakers and individual family members. Everybody needs to set their own boundaries and priorities as part of a team.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. It is critical early on because there are going to be limitations both physically and mentally and I think working together the best organize is really going to help when it comes to all the information and education coming your way it could be overwhelming initially.

I hope you find this episode, useful and informative. I know it can be a lot, especially in the early days, but as we go down this journey, things will get lighter and easier. I promise you you probably have heard it 1 million times that it gets easier and it seems frustrating and untrue but with time thing improve so stay strong!

Just a Quick Introduction Episode for the Lovable Survivor Podcast.

My name is Will Schmierer and I'm a Stroke Survivor since I had my stroke at age 37 in December 2019. I also got diagnosed two months after with multiple sclerosis, so I also have MS. I know it sounds super fun and it is and this podcast has everything to do with sharing my personal journey and struggles and successes because there are not a lot of survivors Sharing information with what works and what doesn't.

There is tons of research some good some bad, but not a lot of non-medical practitioners, sharing the who want that why and what works and how to navigate the journey because the truth is it gets really difficult once you leave the hospital!

Whether you yourself are a stroke survivor or bring injury survivor, or a survivor of any major life event, a friend, a family member or even a colleague, or anything else related to those topics this podcast might be good for you if not, maybe it's good or somebody else in your life!

I have shared quite a bit online as an elder millennial. I've been around social media, since it really came to fruition in the early 2000s. Now I am three years into my recovery journey and I'm still figuring out some things, but I've also come along way since the gecko and helping other survivors navigate the overwhelm and next steps in the recovery journey. Once you're looking to go beyond just good enough, you found the right spot!

I'm sure it'll evolve as we go, but in the early days before having guests, I will share some of the things I've been through some of the things I wish I knew sooner and sort of what works and what doesn't because we all get lots of information can be hard to navigate!

Every episode besides this very first one will be around 30 minutes and if that changes at any point or there are guess I'll be sure to note that in the show notes but the first couple episodes will probably be some background and again the things I wish I knew now and the things I wish I had learned sooner and really the motivation behind this podcast is about building a larger community because although it does get easier, it is not easy, and with a community of stroke survivors, both young and old hopefully it's a little bit easier to navigate!
