What if the trillions of bacteria living inside your gut are quietly determining your health, your energy, your weight, your immune system—even your mood and brain function? In this eye-opening episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. James Krystosik explores the fascinating world of the gut microbiome—the good, the bad, and the ugly bacteria that call your digestive system home. You'll discover why some bacteria are your greatest allies, producing vitamins, short-chain fatty acids, and other compounds that protect your gut, reduce inflammation, and support your brain. You'll also learn how harmful bacteria can flourish when your microbiome is out of balance, contributing to digestive problems, fatigue, autoimmune conditions, weight gain, leaky gut, anxiety, depression, and many chronic diseases. Dr. J explains what causes this imbalance, how modern diets, antibiotics, stress, and environmental toxins damage the microbiome, and—most importantly—what you can do to rebuild a healthier gut naturally.
Is the health of your gut connected to the health of the soil your food grows in? The answer may surprise you.
In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. James Krystosik welcomes regenerative farmer Bob Jones from The Chef's Garden for a fascinating discussion about the relationship between healthy soil, nutrient-rich food, the gut microbiome, and long-term health.
Together, they explore how modern agricultural practices have depleted our soils, reduced the nutritional value of our food, and contributed to the growing epidemic of chronic disease. Bob explains the principles of regenerative farming, the importance of living soil and beneficial microbes, and why the same biological systems that keep soil healthy are remarkably similar to those that keep your gut healthy.
If you've ever wondered why food doesn't seem as nutritious as it once was—or why chronic illness continues to rise despite medical advances—this conversation offers a different perspective grounded in biology and nature.
In this episode, you'll learn:
Whether you're interested in natural medicine, gut health, nutrition, regenerative agriculture, or disease prevention, this episode will change the way you think about the food on your plate.
Low-carb diets are everywhere… praised for rapid weight loss, better blood sugar, and metabolic health. But what if there's another side to the story that most people aren't talking about? In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. James Krystosik uncovers the truth about low-carb diets—what they do inside your body, how they impact your gut microbiome, and why cutting carbs might not be as harmless as it seems. You'll discover how low-carb eating can shift your gut bacteria, reduce fiber intake, and influence long-term health in ways that go far beyond the number on the scale. Dr. J breaks down the difference between "carbs from heaven" and "carbs from hell," explaining why whole-food, plant-based carbohydrates may be one of the most powerful tools for healing your gut and supporting longevity. This episode isn't about hype—it's about physiology. From microbial diversity to inflammation and energy production, you'll learn what your body actually needs to thrive… and what might be missing when carbs are too low. If you've ever wondered whether low-carb is truly the healthiest path—or if it could be silently working against you—this episode will challenge your thinking and give you a clearer, evidence-based perspective. Because healing doesn't begin with restriction… it begins with understanding.
In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, James D. Krystosik challenges one of today's most popular nutrition beliefs: that carbohydrates are the enemy. Drawing from decades of clinical experience and real-world observation, he breaks down why families have eaten whole-food carbohydrates—like bread, potatoes, rice, and fruit—for thousands of years without becoming overweight, inflamed, or chronically ill. You'll discover how modern low-carb thinking may be disrupting more than just your diet—it can disconnect you from tradition, family meals, and the enjoyment of real food. Dr. J also explores the powerful evidence from Blue Zones, where the longest-living populations thrive on diets rich in natural carbohydrates and remain lean, active, and disease-resistant.
Most importantly, this episode reveals the real culprit behind today's health crisis: not carbs—but highly processed, refined versions stripped of fiber and nutrients. If you're over 40 and looking to restore energy, lose weight, and reclaim your health, this episode offers a refreshing, common-sense approach grounded in both science and tradition.
In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. Krystosik reveals one of the most overlooked threats to your health—and it's not your diet, toxins, or even stress.
It's the constant stream of input your brain is exposed to from the moment you wake up.
From news and notifications to daily pressures and uncertainty, this nonstop mental noise keeps your nervous system locked in a fight-or-flight state—draining your energy, clouding your thinking, disrupting your sleep, and accelerating the aging process.
But the solution isn't complicated.
Dr. Krystosik breaks down the powerful, science-backed role of silence as a natural reset for the brain and body. You'll learn how simple moments of intentional quiet—morning, midday, and night—can restore clarity, reduce stress hormones, improve focus, and support deep healing and recovery.
This episode walks you through:
If you're experiencing brain fog, fatigue, irritability, or poor sleep—even when everything "looks normal"—this episode may change how you think about your health.
Your body isn't broken—it's waiting for the right signal.
If you're over 40 and feeling low on energy, unmotivated, or just not like yourself… you might be told it's Seasonal Affective Disorder—S.A.D. But what if that's only part of the story? In this episode, we uncover a deeper, often ignored connection: the link between S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and the Standard American Diet—S.A.D. Yes, the same foods many people rely on every day may be quietly driving inflammation, disrupting your gut microbiome, and altering brain chemistry in ways that directly impact your mood. After 40, your body becomes less forgiving. Nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar swings, and gut imbalance can amplify seasonal mood changes, making symptoms feel stronger and last longer. You'll discover how your gut and brain are intimately connected, why your diet may be worsening your emotional health, and what simple shifts can help restore balance naturally. This isn't just about surviving the seasons… it's about reclaiming your energy, clarity, and emotional resilience—starting from the inside out.
In this episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. James Krystosik explores two powerful scientific discoveries that could dramatically influence longevity and cardiovascular health. First, he reveals groundbreaking research on the gut microbiome, the trillions of microbes living inside your digestive system that scientists now believe may be one of the strongest regulators of how fast we age.
Dr. Krystosik explains how people who live the longest often have unique gut bacteria that help reduce inflammation, support metabolic health, strengthen the immune system, and protect the body from age-related disease. He also discusses the concept of "inflammaging," the chronic low-grade inflammation that accelerates conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline—and how a healthy microbiome may help control it.
You'll also learn the lifestyle habits researchers consistently see in long-living populations, including the role of high-fiber diets, fermented foods, regular movement, reduced medication use, and stress management in maintaining microbial diversity and supporting healthy aging.
In the second part of the episode, Dr. Krystosik dives into new research on nattokinase, a natural enzyme derived from fermented soybeans that studies suggest may help reduce arterial plaque and support healthy blood flow. He compares this natural approach to commonly prescribed statin drugs and explains how nattokinase may influence blood clotting, triglycerides, and overall cardiovascular health.
This episode connects the dots between gut health, inflammation, longevity, and heart health, revealing how lifestyle and natural strategies may support the body's ability to heal and protect itself over time.

In this explosive episode of The Other Side of Medicine, Dr. James Krystosik pulls back the curtain on one of the most dangerous nutrition myths spreading across the internet today — that carbs are evil and saturated fat is your friend.
Influencers chasing clicks are telling millions of people that bacon, butter, and fatty steaks are "health foods," while demonizing carbohydrates. But where's the science? While a handful of cherry-picked studies suggest saturated fat may be harmless, tens of thousands of peer-reviewed studies link high saturated fat intake to elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, arterial damage, heart attacks, and premature death.
And now, even the revised food pyramid trends dangerously in that direction — contradicting decades of well-documented research proving that long-term excess saturated fat is a prescription for cardiovascular disaster.
As I often say, research can be manipulated when the right price is paid. But truth leaves a trail of consistent evidence.
In this episode, I challenge the viral narrative and separate hype from hard science. Not all carbs are created equal — there are "carbs from heaven" and "carbs from hell." But promoting saturated fat as a health food is a dangerous road.
Your heart is too important to gamble on internet trends.
Let's follow the science — not the influencers.

Since the Human Microbiome Project (HMP), we've made significant strides in understanding the gut microbiome's role in health and disease. The microbiome, the vast community of microorganisms living in and on our body's has opened up a new frontier in medicine. The HMP, which concluded in 2012, laid the groundwork by identifying a vast array of microbial species and their basic functions. Now, research has expanded to explore the microbiome's influence on various conditions, personalized medicine, and therapeutic interventions. Tonight Dr. Krystosik will explore some of the most important research discoveries scientists have uncovered since the inception of the Microbiome Project.
Join Dr. Krystosik and his guest Dr. Jonathan Stein from Spectracell Lab as they discuss the micronutrient analysis blood test. This state of the art blood test reveals 31 nutrients essential for health and wellness. A recent study at the University of Texas found that 38% of people are deficient in one or more nutrients essential for the prevention and the restoration of health. Interestingly, 43% of people in this same study who were ingesting a multivitamin supplement were deficient in one or more micronutrients. Only 19% of people in this study had adequate levels of the daily requirements for the 31 nutrients tested in this study. That means that a whopping 80% of people in this study had inadequate levels of the 31 micronutrients tested. Unlike traditional serum tests that measure nutrient levels in the blood, the SpectraCell test analyzes micronutrients within your white blood cells. Serum testing gives a snapshot of the nutrient status at the time of the blood draw. The Spectracell test provides a longer-term view of your nutritional status (reflecting the past 4-6 months) and assesses how well your body utilizes these nutrients at a cellular level. The test evaluates the functional performance of 31 vitamins, minerals, amino/fatty acids, antioxidants, and metabolites. This helps identify functional deficiencies that may not be apparent from simple serum level measurements. The Spectracell test results can reveal hidden deficiencies or imbalances that may be contributing to various health issues. This information can be used to develop personalized nutrition plans, including dietary adjustments and targeted supplementation, to address specific needs.

Orthomolecular medicine is a science-based approach to health that emphasizes the use of optimal levels of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients to prevent and treat disease. The term "orthomolecular" was coined by two-time Nobel laureate Dr. Linus Pauling, who defined it as "the right molecules in the right amounts" to maintain health.
This approach operates on the principle that many chronic diseases stem from nutritional deficiencies, imbalances, or genetic predispositions that can be corrected or mitigated by adjusting dietary intake and supplementation. Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on treating symptoms with pharmaceuticals, orthomolecular medicine seeks to restore biochemical balance at the cellular level.
Key nutrients used in orthomolecular therapy include high doses of vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids, and minerals like magnesium and zinc. These nutrients support immune function, detoxification, neurotransmitter production, and cellular repair, which can be beneficial for conditions such as cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, autoimmune diseases, and metabolic disorders.
Critics argue that some high-dose nutrient therapies lack sufficient clinical trials, but a growing body of research supports the role of nutrition in disease prevention and management. Orthomolecular medicine aligns with functional medicine principles, emphasizing individualized treatment, lifestyle modifications, and evidence-based nutritional strategies for long-term health.
Join Dr. Krystosik and his guest Dr. Joel Kahn M.D., as they debunk the low carb diet with scientific evidence. The belief that low-carb diets are universally healthy is misleading. Research shows that drastically reducing carbohydrates can lead to nutrient deficiencies, increased risk of heart disease, and other chronic conditions. Carbohydrates are essential for energy and overall health, and eliminating them can disrupt the body's balance. Long-term adherence to low-carb diets has been linked to higher mortality rates, making it crucial to approach such diets with caution and awareness of potential risks.

Join Dr. Krystosik and his special guest, Dr. Michael Husmillo on The Other Side of Medicine podcast tonight at 8:00 p.m. as they explore the important role of the vagus nerve in health and disease. Learn about the gut and brain connection, and how to improve well-being by stimulating the vagus nerve with optimal nutrition, detoxification, brain exercises and much more. Discover The Other Side of Medicine. The vagus nerve, also known as the tenth cranial nerve, plays a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including those of the gut and immune system. Here's how it affects these systems: 1. Gut Function: The vagus nerve is a major player in the gut-brain axis, which is the bidirectional communication system between the gut and the brain. It regulates many aspects of gut function, including: • Digestion: The vagus nerve helps regulate the release of stomach acid and digestive enzymes, as well as the movement of food through the digestive tract. • Motility: It controls the contraction and relaxation of the muscles in the digestive tract, aiding in the movement of food through the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. • Satiation: The vagus nerve signals the brain when the stomach is full, helping to regulate appetite and prevent overeating. • Gut-Brain Communication: The vagus nerve transmits information about the state of the gut to the brain, influencing mood, stress responses, and overall well-being. 2. Immune System: The vagus nerve also plays a role in regulating the immune system, primarily through its connection to the spleen and other organs involved in immune function. Key points include: • Inflammation Regulation: The vagus nerve can help modulate inflammation by sending signals that dampen the immune response. This is known as the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. • Spleen Function: The vagus nerve communicates with the spleen, regulating the release of immune cells and cytokines, which are involved in the body's response to infection and inflammation. • Microbiota Regulation: Emerging research suggests that the vagus nerve may play a role in maintaining the balance of gut microbiota, which in turn affects immune function and overall health. 3. Stress Response: The vagus nerve is involved in the body's response to stress. It helps regulate the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which can have downstream effects on both gut function and immune responses. 4. Autonomic Nervous System: The vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's "rest and digest" response. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system, the vagus nerve promotes relaxation and digestion, which can have positive effects on gut health and immune function. Overall, the vagus nerve is a key mediator of communication between the brain, gut, and immune system, helping to maintain homeostasis and overall health. Dysfunction or dysregulation of the vagus nerve can contribute to digestive disorders, immune dysfunction, and other health issues. Discover how to stimulate, nourish and protect the vegus nervous system with safe natural medicine.
The recent allergy epidemic is caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, environmental changes, dietary habits, and lifestyle. Here are some key factors contributing to the increase in allergies: 1. Genetics: People with a family history of allergies are more likely to develop allergies themselves if they don’t follow the suggestions in this podcast. 2. Environmental factors: Changes in the environment, such as pollution in the air, water and food supply, urbanization and a lack of informed choices can impact the prevalence and severity of allergies. 3. Hygiene hypothesis: This theory suggests that decreased exposure to germs and microbes in early childhood may lead to an overactive immune system, increasing the risk of developing allergies. 4. Dietary changes: Western diets high in processed foods contribute to inflammation and weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to allergies. Additionally, changes in agricultural practices have increased the allergenic potential of foods. 5. Changes in microbiota: Disruptions in the gut bacteria increase the risk of developing allergies. 6. Lifestyle factor: Factors that weaken the immune system increase susceptibility to allergies.

Discover what your doctor won't tell you about natural medicine. Functional medicine is an approach to healthcare that focuses on addressing the root causes of illness and disease, rather than just treating symptoms. It takes into account the individuality of each patient and emphasizes a holistic view of health, considering factors such as genetics, environment, lifestyle, and diet.

It is produced by bees that gather nectar from the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. Manuka honey is often used as a natural remedy for various health issues, including:
CAUTION: Not all Manuka honey is created equal. The quality and effectiveness of Manuka honey can vary based on its unique grading system, which measures the level of MGO. Look for honey with a certified UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) rating, which indicates its purity and quality.
However, Manuka honey is also used in culinary applications. It has a distinct flavor and can be used in recipes for baking, marinades, dressings, and more. Many people enjoy its unique taste in various food and beverage preparations.
So, in summary, Manuka honey is a food and a medicine, depending on how it is used. It is most commonly associated with its potential health benefits and is often used as a natural remedy, but it can also be incorporated into culinary dishes for its flavor.

Discover lifesaving information that your doctor won’t tell you about. For example did you know that millions of Americans are being treated with antibiotics for infections of the kidney, bladder, lungs and other systems of the body unecessarily. Researchers are now pointing to an imbalance in the gut bacteria as the root cause of almost all repeated infections. Did you know that more than 1 out 50 children are now diagnosed with autism? And most interestingly scientists are now pointing to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria living in the gut as one of the major causes of autism. Did you know that depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder and Parkinson’s disease are now being linked to the imbalance of bacteria in the gut? Has your doctor told you about the recent research at the Cleveland Clinic that clearly points to specific foods and the overgrowth of harmful bacteria these foods propogate can cause heart attacks and strokes?
Well, I’m pretty confident to say your doctor has not told you about any of these striking findings. But the good news I will explain the latest research on all of these and more.
The current research is exploding with robust data proving Hippocrates the “The Father of Modern Medicine,'“ was not far off with his statement, “All Disease Begins in the Gut.” Every system of the body is affected by the activity and function of the gut. But the almost unbelievable connection to gut health and chronic disease is the affect of the trillions of micro-organisms that live in our gut, known as the micorobiome.
The connection between a perturbed gut microbiome and chronic disease is one of the most robust areas of current research in medicine. Disease in the digestive tract, as well as far reaching areas of the body as the brain, heart, lungs, kidenys, liver, immune system and much more are profoundly influenced by the integrity of the gut microbiome.
