It has negative effects; being harassed in a public space can make you worried about your physical safety and creates an environment of fear and intimidation.

Mustafa produced a documentary for Vice called “Police Killed a Boy. His Friend Was Charged With Murder”.
In February of 2015, LaKeith, who was 15 years old, and a group of friends were involved in the break-ins of two unoccupied homes in Millbrook, Alabama.
The teens were still present in one of the homes when local police officers arrived at the scene. During that encounter, one of the officers shot LaKeith’s 16-year-old friend A’Donte Washington.
Although he was the youngest in the group, LaKeith was denied being tried as a juvenile and was charged as an adult. He was convicted of theft, burglary, and felony murder – a charge that held him legally responsible for the death of A’Donte. Alabama’s felony murder rule states:
A person commits the crime of murder if he/she commits or attempts to commit [a felony] and, in the course of and in furtherance of the crime that he/she is committing or attempting to commit, or in immediate flight therefrom, he/she, or another participant if there be any, causes the death of any person.
Despite A’Donte not being killed by a participant in the crime, LaKeith lost his friend and was charged with 65 years sentence.

Julie is part of a new Netflix documentary, "Split at the Root," where a group of women comes together to reunite migrant families separated by the Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy.
It all started with Yeni González, an immigrant mother from Guatemala, whose three children were taken by ICE agents and transferred to New York.
Yeni remained alone in a detention center in Arizona, unable to post $7,500 bail. A group of American mothers heard Yeni's story. They moved quickly to raise money for the bond so they could then safely transport her state by state to New York.
This will be the beginning of Immigrant families together.

Sumaya is an Artist, Actress, Singer-Songwriter, and Activist. She is the founder and the creative director of YLC, Young Lordes Collective.
An activist-artist collective fighting for equity in New York. Ran for and by revolutionary youth of color.
Their motto is where activism meets artistry.
They also act as a mutual aid; they feel that mutual aid is their responsibility as people living in an unequal society. The idea of mutual aid is built on the fact that all of us, at some point in our lives, will need help.

Qween Jean is a New York-based Stage and Film Costume Designer. She is the Founder of Black Trans Liberation, an organization aimed to provide access and employment resources for the TGNC community. Qween has committed her voice to advocate for marginalized communities, specifically black trans people. Her passion is creating access for unsung heroes and people who are often overlooked. She feels their stories are valuable and deserve recognition.
She has an MFA in Design from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and participated in over 30 projects as a costume designer.
Qween strongly believes in Black Trans Liberation and feels that Liberation extends to everyone. This will allow the community to start healing, cultivating joy, and maintaining our POWER. She is thankful to be surrounded by family and friends who teach her communal love. When we lead with love, the oppressors cannot win!
Qween wants the world to recognize and understand that black trans folx have the right to love past the age of 35! She often states, “It’s simple; we are here to live and to live beautifully.”
Revolution Is Love: A Year of Black Trans Liberation is the powerful and celebratory visual record of a contemporary activist movement in New York City, and a moving testament to the enduring power of photography in activism, advocacy, and community.

Gnawa is a spiritual music that has become more secularized in recent years. Gnawa music and culture are very beautiful and the feminine sound the girls add makes it even more mesmerizing.
Asmâa Hamzaoui and Bnat Timbouktou (the daughters of Timbuktu) represent a new generation of young women Gnawa performers, breaking new ground for gender equity. Asmâa and Aicha assimilated the Gnawa musical tradition from a young age through their father, renowned musician Rachid Hamzaoui, learning to play the guembri (three-string lute) from an early age and later accompanying him at celebrations.
They formed Bnat Timbuktu in 2012, gradually winning over audiences and now performing at festivals all over the world.

Jo Ingabire Moys is an incredibly talented filmmaker.
Bazigaga is a short film directed by Jo, inspired loosely by the true story of Zula Karuhimbi’s efforts during the atrocious 1994 genocide in Rwanda that saw her help save over two hundred Tutsi lives.
Zula used no violence; her story, heart, and mind were her weapons.
It was an event that claimed the lives of over 800,000 men, women, and children, making it one of the largest genocides in recorded history.
