In this episode of the Photo Diaries podcast, Grace interviewed Lita about brand positioning, where they explored how creatives like photographers and designers can effectively position themselves in the market.

Lita explained that brand positioning goes beyond market gaps to focus on how a brand communicates its desired identity in the minds of its target audience. They discussed the importance of understanding and communicating the unique impact a business makes on its clients, rather than just focusing on features and services. Lita shared examples including a home birth photographer who repositioned herself as a storyteller, and explained how even seemingly similar businesses can differentiate themselves through their messaging and brand experience. The conversation concluded with practical advice for creatives looking to establish their brand positioning, including the importance of consistent messaging and understanding their target audience's deeper needs and values.

In this episode of The Photo Diaries Podcast, Grace Costa asks one powerful question:

What are you going to wish you started sooner?

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your photography business riding the highs and lows, unsure when to ask for help, or telling yourself “it’ll work itself out”this episode is for you.

Grace shares her honest perspective on coaching, mentoring, and why trying to figure everything out on your own is often the long road to success. Drawing from her own experience investing heavily in coaching and masterminds over the past six years, she breaks down why support isn’t an expense — it’s a strategy.

You’ll hear:

  • Why waiting until things feel dire is the wrong time to seek help
  • The hidden cost of piecing together advice from podcasts, YouTube, and Instagram
  • Why paying more can actually create better results (and deeper commitment)
  • How trust, focus, and strategy change when you invest properly
  • The mindset shift required to take your photography business seriously

This episode is a permission slip for photographers who know they want more — more stability, more confidence, more income — and are ready to stop taking the long route.

If you’re ready to invest in yourself, get support, and build a business that actually works, this conversation will meet you right where you are.

Ready for support?

You can work with Grace inside her Established Studio Mentorship, a six-month mentoring container designed for photographers with grit and commitment to make their business better than they ever imagined.

In this episode of The Photo Diaries, Grace Costa explores the true value of photography and why photographers often need to be reminded of the impact their work truly has.

Using a clear business branding example, Grace breaks down how photography goes far beyond “just taking photos” and plays a critical role in shaping perception, trust, and connection. She reflects on why so many photographers undercharge — often believing they’re simply having fun — and how this mindset causes them to overlook the long-term value their images bring to a business or an individual.

Throughout the episode, Grace guides photographers to shift their focus from deliverables to transformation, helping them understand how to communicate the outcomes and influence of their work with confidence and clarity.

If you’ve ever struggled to explain your pricing, articulate your value, or felt unsure about charging what you’re worth, this episode will help you reframe photography as the powerful asset it truly is — and step into your role as a professional with confidence.

Happy 2023 friends! I’m thrilled you are enjoying The Photo Diaries and I’ve loved getting all your feedback.

Do you struggle to find ideas? You are not alone! In this episode I provide some ideas about where to seek out inspiration and get your creative juices flowing.

Inspiration is literally all around you, all of the time and we cover:

Visiting galleries and exhibitions
Books and magazines
Photography blogs
Movies and video
And why instagram and social media are not likely to motivate you into action

And if you need more incentive, here’s my favourite quote from Austin Kleon’s Steal Like an Artist

“Go make stuff. The manifesto is this: Draw the art you want to see, start the business you want to run, play the music you want to hear, write the books you want to read, build the products you want to use-do the work you want to see done.” - Austin Kleon.

Books I recommend from my personal library you can purchase on Amazon

I know many of you are keen to build your career as a photographic artist and spend time making your fine art pieces, so in this episode I share how I did it.

Like we discussed in episode six, building your creative practice and setting personal projects were key. I put myself out there - building my artist CV, getting frank feedback, collaborating with other artists - until such time that I started paying attention to my personal story. It was really then, when I connected with myself, that my art really started to connect with an audience and build momentum.

In this episode we talk about personal projects and why they’re so important to building your portfolio and photography career.

It can be daunting trying to get started, so we talk through some tangible ways to get the ball rolling around how to build a project series, setting deadlines and getting an accountability buddy.

And if you need even more reason to get inspired, I also talk about my Horse project that launched me as an artist. This project tapped into work that was personal to me and connected with my heart and lead to a sellout show and invitations participate in other exhibitions, appear on radio shows, magazine features and even a Tedx Canberra talk!

And, if you’ve been thinking about it and putting it off, I set you a challenge to take on your own personal project!
