There was a rain storm in the Phoenix Metro area one winter morning as I drove to work. The day started out dreary, but the dog and I still did our morning walk as there was a break in the rain. The time it took me to get ready for the day was enough to let the next wave of rain showers sneak in.

The drive was peaceful enough. Not too many people afraid of the rain as usual.

When I got to work, I was a bit early so I sat in the parking lot under cover and just listened to rain drops falling on the metal above my car.

The air was cool, with just a hint of a breeze that crept into my open window on occasion.

A cool winter morning here in Phoenix, AZ. The rain is a mist and very light. Just enough to cover the sky and make the planes coming into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport fly a little lower than usual on their approach. Of which, we are in the flight path of.

There’s a gentle hum from our heat pump that stays on throughout the session that is an excellent brownian-type noise. Sure to help your brain do some relaxing as it did mine.

A few planes fly over as we listen to the neighborhood sounds, the birds chirping, and me as I enjoy some of my haul from this mornings restocking run.

I decided to sharpen my hand axe. I recently gave it a new handle and had yet to sharpen it after that. We haven’t been having too many fires so I haven’t needed to cut anything with it.

Now was as good a time as any to get that small job done. Once it’s sharp, I de-gunk the handle from the stickers that were applied by the company I bought it from. Then come back and test it on some of my medium logs that were already cut. Pretty good job if I do say so myself.

While I chop you’ll hear a train horn blow from the nearby tracks running along Grand Avenue in Phoenix. One of the perks of living where we do, I get train sounds daily.

Once that’s done I put the tools away and have a few more drags.

My wife asks if our dog can join me outside, to which I oblige and you may hear her sniff around the mic as she usually does when I am recording.

I continue to enjoy my smoke this morning while the dog plays in the yard, then decide to call this session closed.

The relaxing morning I had can be one you enjoy as well, again and again.

Join me on a morning walk around the casino I stayed at while in Las Vegas, Nevada on a work trip and a few others that surround it. You’ll hear that I adventure outside a bit as the Bellagio is not directly connected on the Mall end to another casino.

I didn’t get to see the fountains going off as they were under maintenance and only working for a few hours of the day.

Enjoy the music as I walk around and listen hard for a few “winners” on the slot machines as I pass by. There is also a lot of construction going on throughout the casino which I was unable to fully avoid.

This track is from the departure gate at Sky Harbor International Airport until I get seated on the plane and we are taxi’ing to the runway.

It’s a bit too loud to record properly from my phone during takeoff and in the air, so I removed those bits.

A very hot evening walk with my dog. Still around 103 degrees at 8:30pm at night. Enjoy the sounds of the neighborhood. Traffic sounds, my dog shaking her body out and her collar making jangly noises, and the sound of footsteps as I walk alongside her.

These evening walks have become such a necessary routine. Our pup is only a few years old and so has lots of energy as she sleeps most of the day. When I work from home I try to take her outside, but this summer heat has us staying inside as much as possible.

As the days get cooler, we’ll take more walks during the day so she’s not so bad.

The first below 80 degree morning here in Phoenix. While the temperature did jump back up above 100 degrees F, this small reprieve was well met. I grabbed a book and a smoke and went out on the patio to enjoy the warm, but not too hot breeze.Turns out the birds in the area had the same idea and I was serenaded for about 20 minutes. Well, they clearly chose singing instead of reading. But the principle remains similar.

Late one evening, my wife and I were startled by some rather loud thunder followed shortly after by rain and heavy wind. The wind died down, but the rain came down harder. I managed to grab my phone and tripod just fast enough to get catch a lull in the storm that then magnifies in intensity quite gradually.

Later, after the rains had past, I captured a beautiful picture of the lightning storm moving across the city. And on my iPhone no less.

I love eating breakfast on the beach, specifically at Hennessey’s Taven just off the Hermosa Beach Pier. It’s technically part of the Strand, an area near Hermosa Beach that has shopping, food, nightlife, and more.

Whenever I visit this town I try to eat breakfast at Hennessey’s at least once. The food is great and they serve a great pint of Guinness. Listen with me as I eat my breakfast, the patrons around me talk and chit chat, and a gentle calm of the waves crashing in the distance.

This episode is great to work to, or for those who need a small bit of commotion to sleep. The constant base of the waves in the background really helps the mind get focused.

If you’ve been following along, I spent some time in California visiting some close friends. They live in Hermosa Beach, CA and are less than a mile from the beach. Whenever I visit them, I love spending the morning at the beach by myself. They are both night owls and I, am not. So we spend most of the day and evening together, then I get my mornings to be calm and reset my brain a bit listening to the waves, having breakfast by the beach, and watching the introduction to the day.

Walk with me to the Hermosa Beach pier on a Saturday morning.

This particular day had a volleyball tournament gearing up to start. You’ll hear some of the chatter as I walk by their setup areas and courts.

Near the end of the track, I am on the pier and heading toward the ocean breaking on the shore. Our next track is a special one, just listening to the waves and the ocean rolling with the sand as it breaks near shore.

Taking a train across the country has always been a dream of mine, since I was a child. I remember watching my Dad build model railroads and towns, which sparked my fascination with trains. However, as I entered my teens and 20s, my interest waned. It wasn't until my 30s that I rediscovered my love for trains and traveling by rail.

I had been looking forward to this trip for a long time, and it did not disappoint. I was traveling from Maricopa, Arizona, which is about an hour south of Phoenix, to Los Angeles Union Station in California, and the journey was fun.

The train ride itself was incredibly peaceful and relaxing. The gentle rumble of the train moving along the tracks was a soothing background noise, and the occasional sound of a carriage door opening or the train rolling over a road crossing only added to the atmosphere. I spent most of the trip in the Sightseer Lounge car, taking in the panoramic views and feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience this type of travel.

As I traveled through Southern Arizona and into California, I couldn't help but reflect on my love for trains and the role that they have played in my life. Watching my Dad build model railroads as a child instilled in me a sense of wonder and appreciation for the power of trains to connect people and places in a way that no other mode of transportation can. In my years doing graffiti I had a love for trains but in a completely different context. And now I’m able to experience that connection for real.

I plan to use my experience to relive the journey until my next cross-country train trip. In the meantime, I highly recommend taking a trip by rail if you're looking for a peaceful and enjoyable way to travel. It's a truly unique experience that I will always treasure.

I have a somewhat newly found love for trains and train travel. In the Southwest, we don’t have too many that carry people to other states. That said, I’ve been really excited to take a trip via Amtrak train and found a great opportunity.

A good friend of mine was going to be recovering from knee surgery out in Hermosa Beach, California and that was a great reason to go see him… and of course be a bit selfish and book my trip via train.

This episode is focused on the sounds around us on the platform outside the Maricopa, Arizona Amtrak station. The train arrives, with a bit of screeching and a sudden halt. Passengers disembark and others get ready to board.

A few of us were routed to a different car as that one had just filled up by a family of 9.

I speak with the car attendant as I board, and then am greeted by my cars attendant as I make my way upstairs to find my seat in Coach class. I skip the seat as everyone in the car has bed down for the night and I’m full of energy.

I follow the attendant to the sightseer lounge car, only one away thankfully. There I find a table and drop myself into a calm I have not had in such a long time.

Travel with me from Central Phoenix to my office in Chandler, Arizona. It’s mostly highway so great amount of ambient sounds coming from the road in my Ford F-150 pickup truck. The occasional turn signal or lane-change signal as I turn to get on the freeway or change lanes throughout my morning commute.

As I drove home from breakfast on this sunny Sunday morning in Phoenix Arizona, I couldn't help but be struck by the sounds of the city around me. With the windows up and the cool breeze of the air conditioning on high blowing through the car, I was surrounded by the familiar sounds of traffic and the whirring of the F-150 engine as we made our way through the streets on our way home.

Despite the noise, there was a certain peacefulness to the drive that I found quite soothing. As we wound our way through the city, I was able to tune out the chaos and focus on the sounds of the world around me. The hum of the tires on the pavement, the rattling of something loose behind the front seat, and the occasional thumps of bumps in the road all combined to create a calming soundscape that helped me relax and unwind.

Even though it’s hot as hell nearly here in Phoenix Arizona, I still need to keep the lawn in check. So, join me this week as I tackle the back yard (back garden for some) and listen to my “paint stripes” in the lawn.

The mower gave me no trouble whatsoever this week. Usually I run out of gas half way thru. I’m apparently a really bad judge of how full the lawn mower tank is or is not.

On a very warm Saturday morning in Phoenix Arizona, I went to the Uptown Farmer’s Market. By myself, I might add. Typically this is a beloved Saturday outing for my wife and I. On days she has to work I go by myself and it’s fine. I’ve always told her that it’s just fine without her. She of course doesn’t believe me.

But it’s true. If it were just me all the time, maybe different story, but there’s something about spending quality time looking at local wares and food stuffs with my wife that I love. Enjoy today’s solo-trip thru the market. I’ve removed a lot of the banter with vendors, but not all of it.

This was the start of very warm weather in July. Turning out to be a record-breaking average temp above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, 43 degrees Celsius. With luck our monsoon season will begin soon. Keep your fingers crossed for it, please!

The weather in Phoenix is already above 110 degrees Fahrenheit / 43 degrees Celsius so being out and about is getting rough. However, I took a slow morning drive thru the neighborhoods of a town called Sunnyslope located north of Downtown Phoenix and was able to keep the windows down a little bit. Not for too long however.

Come along for the ride and listen while you’re working, or dozing off to sleep, or just kicking it. You’ll hear some bumps in the road, my engine as I accelerate beyond a stop sign and even hear my keys jingling a little as I drive.

I love taking short drives around town. Our neighborhoods are so different from one to the next. The diversity in landscape is pretty rad.

A few weeks back, we took our 2 dogs with us to the “last breakfast of the season”. Our dogs love going places with us, but when it gets above 85 in the mornings, we don’t take them out as much. They get too hot too fast.

So this weekend was the last of the season.

Taking advantage of the nice weather and my relatively not busy morning, I drove out to get a car wash. Along the way to and from, you’ll hear traffic passing by. Some cars and trucks, MUCH louder than others, but all enjoyable. Once at the carwash, it goes by relatively quickly.

The suds are showered over the truck and the brushes start their back and forth, sloshing about and cleaning the exterior of my vehicle. This car wash is special, as they have attendants that hand-dry the whole truck. You hear a little of the young guys climbing into the bed of the truck to dry off the back window and as much of the bed as possible.

Very enjoyable audio experience. Join me from leaving the driveway to pulling back in about 30 minutes later.

One of the last not hot weekends of the year, I took advantage of the great weather to cut the grass and do some fertilizing. In the process I needed to water the grass a bit so the fertilizer would stick to the blades of grass and soak in properly.

Listen to the birds chirping and welcoming the morning sun. You may hear some helicopters and airplanes flying nearby as well. This track ends with someone driving down our alley and the dogs going a little bonkers barking. Almost cut that out of the track, but after a few listens, I think it closes the track out nicely.

Enjoy this calming session as the white noise from the sprinklers help to relax the brain and the body.

Just as the sun was cresting over the houses, I was out walking with the dog. The birds seemed to take a cue from the first rays of direct sunlight to ignite their song and welcome the day. It was pretty magical to experience so I figured I would share it with you.

Took the dog to the amazing Uptown Farmer’s Market in Phoenix, Arizona this weekend. They’re open on Saturdays and Wednesdays for much of the year and today was particularly beautiful and mild. The sun was out, but not too warm. The breeze slightly blowing, just enough to cool the exposed skin on my arms and legs.

Many vendors we see often, but this is the first time I’ve recorded. You’ll hear lots of people mulling about, shopping and eating.

Similar to the sounds of a busy coffee shop, this track will be great for keeping you in the zone while working.

Tonight’s walk with my dog was very calm. Mostly clear skies, with the clouds making fun shadows on the ground. There is some traffic passing by tonight that gets quite loud at times. But mostly, it’s quite peaceful.

The wind is blowing ever so slightly, just cool enough to need a jacket. The pup and I are hurrying along until she gets a whiff of something then we stumble to a halt.

It was a nice afternoon and I’d been meaning to split a few big logs I had pulled in from the alley behind my house.

A neighbor had a tree taken down a few months back and the company they used were kind enough to leave several large pieces of the trunk for me. I had them drying out in the sun for 2 months before I felt like I could split them fairly well with my hatchet and steel mallet.

Ended up using a wood splitter for the really big chunks.

The wood was pretty knotted and twisted.

Think it was mesquite which smells amazing when dried out and burned, but the oils can keep the wood moist for a long time after it’s cut up.

The neighbors were out in their backyard today, so you’ll hear kids playing and screaming.

At one point I swear their Mom squeels at them for some reason.

Had some free-time over the holidays and decided to get out and hike a bit just northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The McDowell mountains are spectacular. My wife and I used to hike these trails with some of our close friends that have moved back to Indiana.

There were a lot of other people out this day, enjoying time with family on a hike or bike ride. Some taking the Lost Dog Wash trail like myself, and others taking the Sunrise trail up to one of the summits.

Lots of walking on the trail in this track... almost like a metronome at points. I really enjoyed this hike and I hope you enjoy sharing the journey with me.

Surprise downpour in Phoenix Arizona. Waking up to this rain was amazing and it stayed on for more than a few hours. After taking the dogs out and feeding the beasts, I grabbed a cigar and a cup of coffee and setup outside. The crinkly start to this recording is from taking the cigar out of it's plastic.

I'd run out of butane for my torch, so I used my Zippo lighter instead. A great way to start off this rain storm session.

After getting my cigar lit, I focus the microphone out into the backyard and across the patio. Rain hits the concrete of my backyard patio and some of our patio furniture, while also pooling a bit. Really lovely to have a rainstorm in Phoenix. Being from Indiana, I miss the rain so much living in the desert.

This was a great way to start a relaxing day that was really enjoyable.

As we closed out the year I had some quiet mornings so I decided to enjoy the Sunrise from my backyard, with a small fire. And I do mean small fire. We recently got a gift of a Solo Stove Mesa, which is around 9 inches tall and 3-4 inches in diameter. It's fantastic for some good heat, quick burn, and doesn't burn for too long.

This morning was cool, about 36 degrees F. So the fire was nice. As the light in the sky starts to get brighter, the birds are chirping so loud. You can also hear a lot of the traffic starting to pick up outside my neighborhood in Central Phoenix, Arizona.

We've had an unseasonably large amount of rain this fall and winter in Phoenix, Arizona. I can't complain, I love it.

This morning was particularly wet as the dog and I went out for her morning stroll around the neighborhood. We typically do about a mile out and about in the mornings. The rain was a bit much for both of us today however so we kept it to only a quarter of a mile.

As you'll hear, the rain was pretty loud in the street and landing on the leaves of trees. A few people are up and about at this hour, but not many.

This was a calm morning, little breeze, aside from that which was carrying the storm thru. Thankfully it wasn't blowing sideways.

You'll notice the dog got a little frustrated with being soaked and shakes off quite a few times. At one point, we had to walk thru a bit of a puddle. Both of us had wet feet after that.

Enjoy the repetitive sounds of us walking on the side-walks in our neighborhood in Central Phoenix. We're lucky to have as many big trees in our area that make for really beautiful walks early mornings in the rain.

It was a weekday afternoon when my neighbors had their lawn care guy come to clean up the yard. The neighbors directly across the street from me use the same guy so he's typically here for 2 hours at a time. He usually does the backyards first, so I waited until he moved on to the front-yards before I hit record.

I grew up with a guy like him. My dad owned and operated a lawn care company back in Indianapolis, IN.

So the sounds, the smells, it all brings me back to my Dad. If he happens to be visiting us when the neighborhood is mowing, we typically sit outside and listen while smoking cigars on the patio.

I find the hum of the engine to be rather soothing and it always puts me into a productive headspace.

As he finishes with the mowing and trimming, then moves on to using a gas powered blower to clean up the debris on the drive and side-walks.

Another great cut from my trip to South Mountain near Phoenix, Arizona. This is my final trip out of the park and back into the city. As before on my way in, the construction zone was a bit of a jog. This part of the trip though was impeded by more than just the construction zone… we also now had to endure the 10 MPH pace following behind a man on a bicycle for 3 blocks.

Not to worry, I was holding up traffic so this poor guy with no jacket or hat or umbrella was getting soaked riding in the street vs. thru the trench of water that used to be the sidewalk.

Only frustrating part here was a guy in a muscled up Ford Ranger decided to drive on the wrong side of the street and go around 4 cars including myself and nearly take out the bicyclist when he cut back over just narrowly missing the bike and the traffic barrels.

Shortly after a passing this man on his bike, I came up to a line of 3 cars behind a street cleaner truck.

Again, as before, I had no reason to not enjoy the ride and the rain.

As we begin today's session, I'm sitting in a small pull-off between the North and South views of South Mountain. Cars are passing by, people out hiking are chatting amongst themselves.

I decide to start down the mountain and back toward home, but just can't help but listen to the rain and want to share the experience. You'll hear the rain hitting the windshield of my truck as well as my rain jacket. The hard ping or tap is that of the drops hitting the water resistant material. The calm light breeze and the drizzle of the rain cloud floating thru the mountainside was soothing.

Starting in Central Phoenix, I drove South on the I-17 down and around the southern edge of the downtown Phoenix area. You exit onto South Central Avenue and are immediately hit with construction.The city is expanding it’s Lightrail system to venture South along Central Ave. A fairly long distance.There are a lot of bumps in the road as the construction crews have routed traffic on a 4-6 lane road into 2 lanes, one each way.While this added about 20 extra minutes to my journey, I didn’t care. It was a cool, cloudy morning and I didn’t have anything else to do for a few more hours.Join me on my journey to South Mountain on a windy, dreary day.You’ll hear and ambulance passing by as we exit Phoenix streets onto the highway. As we drive thru South Phoenix, you’ll hear me accelerate thru the streets, do lots of stops and slow downs.Once we get free of the construction the road sounds become less prominent and dad into the hum of the engine and wind.As we enter the South Mountain Park & Preserve, you’ll hear thuds as we roll slowly over the speed humps leading up to the base of the mountain.As we gain altitude, you’ll notice the push and pull of the engine as I accelerate and decelerate around fairly tight turns that lead up to the the summit.Other cars coming down the mountain pass by, a few somewhat recklessly at speeds I deemed too fast.Closing in on the top, where we will exit and begin our late morning walk, the wind picks up. We pull into a parking spot just below the crest. On a very nice, mild afternoon in my neighborhood our neighbors were mowing their grass and I couldn't help but enjoy it. It was such a calming and relaxing sound, I figured I should share it.

It's autumn in Phoenix, Arizona and the days are very mild and warm, while the nights and mornings are quite cool. Darn right cold for those that have been here for more than a few years.

While my neighbors were finishing their clean up after the lawn mowing, a pigeon decided to join me on the patio. It flew so close to the table I thought it was going to land on me for a split-second. I left the encounter in the recording as the chirping and cooing was pretty nice.

Taking a drive on a Sunday afternoon after getting a haircut and decided to stop and get the truck washed before I take off on another work trip. Join me on this journey around the Uptown area of Phoenix.

While on a recent work trip to San Antonio, Texas, I was in need of a relaxing hot shower after a long day. This hotel is old. One of the oldest in San Antonio and also one of the most haunted.

While I didn't experience any ghosts myself, the ambiance and decor, the layout of the rooms, and even some doors that appeared to lead to nowhere made the experience one that I will not soon forget.

Enjoy this shower with me and let it lull you to sleep or relax you while you work. The sound of running water has always been calming to me and the hot water and steam certainly helped release tension in my body. I hope it does the same for you.

Visiting a resort for a recent work event, I took a walk in the Arizona desert and the sounds were so inspiring I had to share with you.

It's about 5am and the sun is nowhere in sight. The wind is blowing and the air is cool and crisp at around 51 degrees Fahrenheit.

I began my walk on the West side of the property and did a loop around the whole thing. Took me around 40 minutes to walk at a leisurely pace.

During my journey I came across a running stream that circumnavigates the property and there was a small waterfall built into the flow by the resort.

The majority of this track is from sitting close to the waterfall, watching the sun slowly rise, and enjoying the desert flora.

Unfortunately no desert animals came to visit while I sat, but it was still an incredibly calm way to start my day.

A cool night in the Valley of the Sun, we opened the house up as we ready for Fall. Autumn in Phoenix is more like a cool summer day or night from the Midwest. Originally from Indiana, I know this feeling very well. Not cold enough for a fire, but just right for a light jacket or hoodie, some warm socks and bit of bourbon neat.

You'll hear the helicopters flying by every once in a while, but mostly you'll enjoy the calm winds flowing through the house and the occasional cricket chirp or a bird calling it's goodnight.

The wind is fairly consistent this evening, coming in and through the house. Me sat in my armchair sipping on my bourbon and enjoying the mostly calm evening air.

Our central fan for the house does a great job at keeping the airflow steady and the wind provides just enough whistle to know it's there.

This night was particularly calm and as I recorded this, I dozed in an out of the sleep and waking worlds. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do.

As we began preparing our ingredients for dinner, the thunder started to roll and the rain began to fall. We decided to open up the house and enjoy the cool breeze, sounds of rain and thunder, and see the lightning dance across the sky while we started to cook.

A wonderful decision as you'll hear.

This was one of the biggest storms we've had all monsoon season, at least in central Phoenix. Something we absolutely love.

We had some champagne to sip on as well and took more than a few moments to step away from the cooking and just enjoy the sounds of the storm on the patio. We don't get much rain most of the year, so when we do it's a celebration!

Enjoy the calm & relaxing repetition of the drops hitting the patio, falling off the roof, and the thunder rolling across the desert sky.

It's a rainy, cloudy day here in Phoenix, Arizona. The perfect weather for chili. So that's what we did. We made chili and I'm sharing those sounds with you. The boiling, bubbling chili on medium high heat will hopefully help you focus while you are living your life.

I missed the part of adding the ingredients into the pot, but you'll hear all the boiling, stirring, and even plating after it finishes cooking.

In this week's episode a storm was rolling through Phoenix and as I took my dog out to watch the clouds, I figured I'd have a cigar and enjoy the breeze. The crazy thing was, even though the clouds pretty much East and West of us looked gnarly... we didn't get anything but a few drops of rain.

Elsewhere in the Valley, it poured. Trees came down from the wind. Scary stuff.
