What if the behavior frustrating you most isn't actually the problem—but a signal that something deeper is happening? In this episode, Coach Seth and Coach Keenan challenge parents, educators, coaches, and leaders to look beyond a child's behavior and understand what may be happening underneath the surface.

Through the lens of nervous-system regulation and Polyvagal Theory, Coach Seth breaks down what happens when kids move from feeling safe and connected into fight, flight, or shutdown—and why adults can either help regulate that response or unintentionally make it worse. From a powerful story of a student running away during a Summit experience to real examples from Five Star Life's LIFT program, this conversation provides practical tools for replacing shame and control with curiosity, connection, accountability, and intentional leadership.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Why "bad behavior" may actually be communication from a dysregulated nervous system
    • A simple breakdown of Polyvagal Theory and the different nervous-system states
    • Why adults must regulate themselves before trying to regulate a child
    • The powerful question: "What's happening inside of you right now?"
    • Coach Seth's story of responding differently when a student ran away during a Summit experience
    • How curiosity can uncover what's actually driving anger, fear, shutdown, or defiance
    • Why shame and embarrassment can push kids further into survival mode
    • A powerful example from Five Star Life's LIFT program showing what happens when an adult chooses regulation over reaction
    • Why these principles apply far beyond parenting—to classrooms, coaching, leadership, marriage, and the workplace
    • How Five Star Life is helping educators and volunteers create environments where students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn

Who are you when the titles, the clothes, and the followers are stripped away? In this powerful episode, Coach Seth and Coach Mia dive into the most core topic of the Five Star Life mission: Identity. We are entering an era where AI will master the "hard skills," making the "soft skills"—social intelligence, critical thinking, and emotional resilience—the most valuable assets on the planet.

Coach Seth introduces the "Mirror" analogy used across Five Star programs to help kids and adults identify the discrepancy between who they are today and their "True Ideal Self." We explore the biology of habit, explaining why you can't just "delete" a bad mindset, but must instead starve the old programs to build new neural pathways. Whether you are a parent looking to connect with your child or a leader seeking to master your own internal world, this episode provides the blueprint for lasting transformation.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • The AI Premium: Why social skills and emotional intelligence are the future of the workforce.
  • Innovative Learning: How 400 acres and "neutral" activities (like blacksmithing) rebuild a child's confidence.
  • The Mirror Exercise: A practical tool for identifying your ideal self vs. your feared self.
  • Starving the Virus: The biological reality of how to "untrain" negative thoughts and habits.
  • The Power of Thresholds: Using doorways as a psychological reset to show up intentionally.

For 20 years, Five Star Life has been on a mission to transform students' lives by challenging the way they think, act, and lead. But how did it all begin? In this foundational episode, Coach Seth and Coach Mia return to the "Why." From the staggering data of the "dropout epidemic"—visualized as 12 Empire State Buildings filled with students—to Seth’s own medical journey of discovering "root causes," this episode is a deep dive into what it truly takes to move the needle for the next generation.

We move past the "woo-woo" and into the hard science of the Polyvagal Theory. Coach Seth breaks down the three states of the nervous system: the clarity of the Ventral Vagal, the mobilization of the Sympathetic (Fight or Flight), and the isolation of the Dorsal Vagal. Learn why your "stomach issues" or "anxiety" might actually be a physical state of being rather than a character flaw. Discover "the greatest pharmacy in the world" built directly into your biology and how tools like breathwork, mindfulness, and the Five Star Life App can help you—and your children—climb the ladder from survival to thriving.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • The 12 Empire State Buildings: The data that fueled a 20-year movement.
  • Root Cause Medicine: How Seth’s health crisis changed the way we look at education.
  • The Vagus Nerve: Understanding the "Polyvagal Ladder" and why kids "check out."
  • Human Beings vs. Human Doings: Why we must prioritize feeling over performance.
  • Innovative Learning: Moving beyond the desk and into real-world application.

Are you raising a child who can survive the world, or a child who is afraid of it?

In this deep episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth and Coach Mia unpack what they believe is the #1 mistake parents are making in this generation: protecting children from adversity instead of teaching them how to thrive through it. We live in a culture driven by fear and the desire to give our kids the childhood we never had—but by removing every obstacle, are we inadvertently telling our kids they aren't strong enough to handle life?

Coach Seth and Coach Mia introduce the "Success Sequence" for families and the launch of the new Five Star Life App, a tool designed to put parents back at the center of the family conversation. They discuss the critical difference between protecting a child from harm versus protecting them from discomfort, and why every child needs a "Support Team" of three specific voices: someone who listens, someone who walks with them, and someone who guides and challenges them. Whether you’re a parent feeling the "stiff arm" from your teen or an educator looking for ways to bridge the gap between home and school, this episode is a masterclass in building identity, independence, and legacy.

Are we failing our boys by forcing them into a box of silence? In this episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth welcomes back Cherry Kulp of Unearth Coaching to discuss a topic that is often ignored in today’s cultural climate: the specific psychological and emotional needs of men and boys. Cherry shares insights from her work with the White House’s "My Brother's Keeper" initiative and her current research into how society limits male emotion to only two options—stoicism or anger.

Coach Seth and Cherry explore the "Father Wound" and the staggering statistics of incarceration and college graduation for those in fatherless homes. They break down the three primary drivers of the male purpose—to protect, provide, and procreate—and how understanding these drivers can transform marriages and communities. From polyvagal theory and co-regulation to the practical art of creating a "safe space" at home, this episode is a blueprint for anyone looking to support the men in their lives and raise the next generation of resilient, emotionally healthy leaders.

What’s stopping you from reaching your potential?

In this episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth sits down with 12-year-old Frankie Martinez, a young man who is redefining what it means to "thrive." What started as a simple 4-H project in a backyard garden has evolved into Frankie’s Spicy Farm—a fully FDA-approved hot sauce company with a nationwide reach.

Frankie isn't your average seventh-grader. He’s navigating sophomore-level biology, playing competitive soccer, and managing a scaling business—all while voluntarily limiting his own screen time. Coach Seth and Frankie dive into the "Entrepreneurial Spirit," the discipline of self-management, and the critical role of "Proactive Parenting."

You’ll hear the story of the "Success Sequence" in action: how a simple "Yes" from his parents opened the door to a journey through the Department of Agriculture, co-packaging partnerships in Ohio, and "Pepperpalooza" in Pennsylvania. Whether you’re a student looking for inspiration or a parent wanting to champion your child’s potential, this episode is a masterclass in work ethic and vision.

ABOUT OUR GUEST: Frankie Martinez is a 12-year-old entrepreneur and student-athlete dedicated to building a national brand through self-discipline and an innovative spirit.

"I failed" is an event. "I am a failure" is a lie.

In this transformative episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth and Coach Mia tackle the "Toxic Rumination Loop"—the dangerous habit of replaying our mistakes until they become our identity. Using the "Railroad Track Theory," they explain why joy and adversity are parallel constants in our lives, and why your brain is biologically wired to "Battery Optimize" by keeping you stuck in survival mode.

Coach Seth shares his personal journey of overcoming his own "adversity" with running, illustrating how to teach your brain what thriving actually looks like. They dive deep into the science of Learned Helplessness and provide a practical "Success Sequence" to help you reclaim your power. You'll learn why we must Normalize Failure (not accept it) and how "Micro-Wins" can rebuild the confidence shattered by a hard season.

Whether you’re a parent trying to help your child navigate a setback or an adult feeling like you’re stuck in an emotional "middle school," this episode is your blueprint to ensure a bad season doesn't turn into a bad life.

Is your parenting response building resilience or reinforcing failure?

In this episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth and Coach Mia dive into the "Railroad Tracks" of life—the reality that something amazingly good and something incredibly adverse are always happening at the same time. Using a real-time story of a teenage driving mistake, they explore why the way we respond to our children’s failures predicts how they will handle adversity as adults.

They pull back the curtain on the "Toxic Rumination Loop," explaining the dangerous difference between learning from a mistake and simply re-playing the misery of it without any new insight. You'll learn why "soft" parenting can actually be a form of crippling a child and how to shift your perspective from "Failure is Final" to "Adversity is a Tool". Whether you are navigating a setback in your career or helping your student own their actions, this conversation provides the blueprint for moving through pain and stepping into victory.

Is your parenting style building a champion or a crutch?

In this episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth and Coach Mia dive into why modern "soft culture" is robbing the next generation of the grit they need to succeed. While most people view adversity as a sign to stop, elite performers know it is the essential "springboard" for greatness.

We break down the Toxic Pain Cycle—the dangerous psychological loop of re-living failures rather than learning from them—and why normalizing defeat is the only way to build a healthy relationship with success. Whether you are a parent, educator, or student, this conversation is a masterclass in shifting from a place of fear to a place of love and victory.

Are you stuck in a "survival mindset" that no longer serves you? In this episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth and Cherri Kulp of Unearth Coaching explore why so many of us are still using the mental tools we developed just to get through childhood. While a "scrappy" survival instinct might have protected you then, it could be the very thing blowing up your relationships and blocking your peace today.

In this episode, Coach Seth and Cherri break down why the holiday season often acts as a mirror for our deepest family wounds and how to navigate those triggers with empathy. They explore the vital importance of creating a clear family identity, discussing why modern "cancel culture" within families is robbing the next generation of their legacy. Cherri shares why "growing through it" is a choice to see adversity as a fine-tuning process for a greater purpose. Whether you are struggling to reconnect with your kids or looking to build a generational foundation of character and grace, this conversation provides the tools to stop reacting to your past and start leading your family toward a 150-year vision.

Will your adversity build you or bury you? In this powerful episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth and Coach Mia dive deep into the one thing no human gets a pass on: hard times. Whether it’s chaos at home, pressure on the field, or hidden trauma, adversity is a guaranteed part of the human experience—but it doesn't have to define your identity.

In this conversation, Seth and Mia break down the three states of the human nervous system and why "shutting down" is a biological response that traps us in hopelessness. They discuss the "Creative Genius" study by NASA, revealing how life’s failures and negative words often beat down the innate brilliance we are all born with. Coach Seth shares a personal story of a devastating game-winning shot he missed in high school and the specific mental process he used to "draw a circle" around the event so it didn't paralyze his future.

Learn how to regulate your nervous system through breathing and intentionality, and discover why the gap between where you are and where you want to be can only be closed once you stop letting your circumstances define who you are.

How do you find your voice when you feel like you’ve lost everything? At fifteen, Kinley Shoemaker’s world was shattered by a violent act. Instead of hiding, she chose a path of radical resilience, stepping into the arena of pageantry and eventually becoming Miss Indiana.

In this episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth sits down with Kinley Shoemaker to discuss the "messenger mindset." They explore why you shouldn't wait until you’re "healed up" to chase your dreams and how the simple act of saying "yes" to new opportunities can lead you out of your darkest places. Kinley shares her philosophy of "triumph over trauma," explaining how she found her own healing through 500+ hours of community service and why empathy is the missing factor in today’s social media-driven world.

They also dive into the realities of modern pageantry, the impact of social media on self-image, and why the best way to heal your own heart is to walk out your front door and serve someone else. Whether you are a young person facing a setback or a parent helping a child navigate a difficult season, this conversation is a roadmap for turning a victim mentality into a victorious one.

About Our Guest: Kinley Shoemaker is Miss Indiana and a student at Butler University. What is your unforgiveness costing you? In this episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth and Cherry Kulp of Unearthed Coaching unfold the heavy price of holding onto the past. Forgiveness isn't just a spiritual concept—it is a physical and psychological necessity that can determine the state of your health and the quality of your future.

In this powerful conversation, we break down the "Delorean Effect" and how retelling old stories of hurt keeps your body trapped in a toxic cycle of stress and pressure. Cherry shares her personal journey of how unresolved resentment physically manifested in her body and why the hardest work involves showing compassion to the one person we often judge most: ourselves. We discuss the vital difference between forgiveness and reconciliation, the trap of ego, and how "unplugging" from the pain allows you to reclaim your power and walk in true dominion.

What separates the average from the elite? It isn't just talent—it’s the obsession with the details that everyone else ignores.

In this episode of Five Star Life, Coach Seth sits down with Bobbo Torres to pull back the curtain on what it takes to build elite-level greatness. From the high school gym to training the pros, Bobbo and Seth explore why most people miss the "gold" in others and how a single 15-second window of genuine belief can change a student's entire trajectory.

They dive into the "Pro Blueprint," discussing why elite athletes like Demetrius Jackson and LeBron James prioritize the tedious details of recovery and rehab over the glamorous workouts. Whether you are coaching a high schooler or training a professional, the secret remains the same: it’s about observation, deep focus, and having a belief system that demands more.

Coach Seth sits down with Director of Basketball Operations, Brae Beadles to discuss Five Star Life' newest video curriculum series BREAKTHROUGH. Breakthrough is a breach in a wall of an enemy, a breaking up or shattering of something, or an important development or achievement. In this episode, Coach Seth talks to listeners about motivation makers and breakers.  You can have vision, goals, and take action but it is the people in your life who will make or break your chances of success. The late Harvard professor, David McClelland spent most of his life studying motivation and said that up to 95% of our success or failure in life is determined by the people we habitually surround ourselves with. It's not just the people you surround yourself with…it’s the people of the people of the people you surround yourself with according to the first major study on social influence.  Researchers discovered a very powerful link between a person’s success and the people they surround themselves with.

Coach Seth and Mia are joined by Producer and Research Specialist Brandon to discuss the final part of a 6 lesson series on conflict.

How do we resolve conflict? Coach Seth explains that you can make a pre-choice choice in conflict to show respect and restore peace. It sounds like an easy concept, but it’s hard because before you’re in the conflict, it requires you to make the choice to handle the conflict with respect. When we go off on someone, our adrenaline might be pumping, the crowd may be cheering us on, we might feel amazing and powerful, but when the crowd leaves and we’re left alone, we are embarrassed, we feel ashamed and our peace is gone because we know we’ve hurt someone.

During their adolescent years, many teenagers may want to stay as far away from their caregivers as possible. Coach Seth points out that even as children get older, the adults in their life still play a key role in guiding and supporting them towards a Five Star Life.

The level of your relationship with your parents is determined by the level of your respect and ability to see life from their perspective. The key to restoring your relationships with your caregivers is living by the value of sacrifice. If you want a better relationship with your parents, more support, and to stop feeling rejected, frustrated, or irritated, you have to sacrifice your limited perspective and put yourself in your parent’s shoes.

This is where most people struggle with conflict because they match energy. If someone is nice to us, we will be nice back. If someone is mean to us, we will be mean back. People who are mean on purpose are often trying to bait you. They have no power or control over you, unless you give it to them. If you don’t give them the power to be mean, they move on. In order to restore your power and live a Five Star life, you have to live by integrity. Coach Seth encourages listeners to have the strength not to take the bait and walk away.

Coach Seth sits down with Producer and Research Specialist Brandon to discuss the first part of a 6 lesson series on conflict. The secret to you repairing your relationship with yourself is to master inner conflict. Who you are is your identity, which is broken into your self-image (how you feel about yourself) and your self-concept (the picture or image you have of yourself). Your self-concept is broken into two parts, your ideal self and your feared self. Choosing your feared self creates inner conflict. When we choose not to be a person of integrity, we struggle with inner conflict because we know we aren’t behaving as the person we want to be. Every time you make a choice to live as your ideal self, you reaffirm your identity and you reaffirm your self-image. You don’t have to have constant inner conflict. You can rebuild your confidence and you can make a daily choice to be a person who lives with integrity.

In this series, Coach Seth is teaching students how to take dominion or control over different aspects of their lives. Why is it important to have a good relationship with your teachers and coaches? The average student spends 30-40 hours per week with teachers. In that time, students are learning more than just core content. They are learning and creating habits about how they will go through relationships with adults. These habits will follow them for the rest of their life. A student who disrespects teachers today, will be the same adult later that doesn't respect their supervisors and managers. For the first time ever, it has become normalized in many schools to disrespect teachers. Coach Seth points out that many of the issues teachers are experiencing in the classroom today can be summed up in one word: Dehumanization. Ruling your relationship with teachers and coaches starts with the Five Star Life value of RESPECT.
