Prior to her current employment and service on Hartford's City Council, Tiana was a dedicated member of the public defender's office, notably leading a city-wide anti-gun violence initiative.

On today's special episode of Make Change Happen, we are reaching into the archives recalling a conversation I was honored to have had early in the pandemic with Connecticut Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard A. Robinson – a longtime public servant and jurists – Chief Justice Robinson was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on May 3rd, 2018. Our conversation which discussed various aspects of the profession including mentorship, justice, and the responsibility that each of us bears in making a difference in our state and in the world we share. It's important to note that our conversation took place in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the reinvigorated calls for an end to systemic racism. The full conversation was titled "An Intimate Conversation with Connecticut Black Leaders about justice, access, and opportunity" and took place June 10, 2020 and it is archived at the Commission's webpage.

Not unlike the impact of Redlining, Plessy vs Ferguson and the Poll Tax, the childcare crisis is a direct result of racialized and gender-based legislation and policies. With the childcare industry on the verge of a major transformation, not seen since the creation of Head Start in 1965, the Childcare Crisis Roundtable will discuss the history and the legacy of 400 years of childcare policies. We will examine how legislation and policies, designed to disenfranchise black women, have caused America’s Childcare System to devolve into the patchwork of care that now exists.

Steven Hernandez chats with his friend LaReese Harvey. Lareese, the Co-Founder of Once Incarcerated, recently approached the non partisan Commission that he lead about a report, “Sexual Abuse to Prison Pipeline” and asked that we host an event to discuss and bring awareness to this topic. This led to the creation of a 4-part series on the abuse to prison pipeline that focused on awareness, restoration, healing and moving forward to give back.
Lareese taught us that Kids who experience sexual abuse are routed into the juvenile justice system because of their victimization. Once inside, they encounter a system that is often ill-equipped to identify and treat the violence and trauma that lie at the root of the youth's arrests. More harmful still is the significant risk that the punitive environment will re-trigger their trauma and even subject them to new incidents of sexual victimization, which can exponentially compound the profound harms inflicted by the original abuse. This often follows people long into adulthood. Lareese journey is one of self discovery and giving back, and as you'll see from this conversation, rooted in a deep love for community and humanity

Emanuela is also a busy mom, so Steven was so excited to be able to sit with her and discuss the importance of empathy and compassion in addressing the barriers to access that impact people who may be new arrivals to the state, or communities that have suffered from multigenerational cycles of stifled success and disinvestment.
