“Braving the workplace is being yourself every day in a world that tells you to be something different.” — Dr. Beth Kaplan
This week on Her Leadership Coach, Rochelle is joined by Dr. Beth Kaplan, belonging researcher and author of Braving the Workplace: Belonging at the Breaking Point. Together, they dive deep into one of the most misunderstood — yet deeply human — needs in the workplace: belonging.
Dr. Kaplan shares not only her research but also her lived experience of workplace trauma and healing, offering powerful insights into why belonging matters, how it’s different from inclusion, and what leaders can do to foster it — both for their teams and themselves.
In this episode, you will learn: Why the opposite of belonging isn’t exclusion — it’s fitting in*. * The four types of belonging in the workplace (and why only one of them is healthy). * Practical ways to help yourself feel like you belong — especially after workplace trauma. * The most powerful thing you can do as a leader to help your team feel seen, heard, and valued.
Whether you’re quietly determined to become a better leader, struggling with a team that’s disengaged, or wondering why work just doesn’t feel good anymore… this episode is one you don’t want to miss.

"Embrace your ambition, not as a validation of your worth or a quest for significance, but as a reflection of your passion, your potential, and your commitment to making a positive impact." - Rochelle
In this episode, Rochelle, your host, takes us on a deep dive into the world of ambition. Unpacking the complexities and intricacies that come with being an ambitious woman in today's society, she offers invaluable insights on how to harness our ambition in a positive, balanced, and healthy way. From acknowledging the double-edged sword of ambition to dismantling the 'not good enough' syndrome, this episode is a must-listen for any woman navigating her career with determination and drive.
In this week's episode, you will learn:
1. The Double-Edged Sword of Ambition
Ambition, when harnessed properly, can lead to remarkable success and satisfaction. However, when it tips into obsession, it can lead to overwork, dissatisfaction, and burnout. Rochelle discusses the difference between healthy ambition and destructive obsession, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the signs of an unhealthy pursuit of success.
2. The 'Not Good Enough' Syndrome
Rochelle delves into the deep-seated feeling of 'not being good enough' that often drives us into unhealthy obsession. This feeling is often exacerbated by societal pressures and expectations, particularly for women, leading to an insatiable need to prove our worth. Rochelle stresses the importance of shifting from self-criticism to self-love as a vital part of maintaining healthy ambition.
3. The Power of Self-Awareness and Balance
This episode underscores the significance of self-awareness and balance. Rochelle highlights the importance of recognizing our inherent value, independent of our achievements, as well as taking control of our ambition so it serves us instead of consuming us. She provides insights on how to achieve a balanced state of ambition, one that propels us forward without compromising our overall well-being.
4. Redefining Ambitious Women
In this thought-provoking discussion, Rochelle challenges societal stereotypes of ambitious women and champions a new definition: ambitious women as compassionate, balanced, and well-rounded individuals. She encourages us to view ambition as a reflection of our passion, potential, and commitment to make a positive impact, rather than a validation of our worth or a quest for significance.

In last weeks episode I went into detail about 'Human leadership', which is a style of leadership based on authenticity, empathy, and adaptivity. This got me curious about other leadership styles and whether or not there is a "best" style.
So this week we are talking about six different leadership styles: situational, adaptive, servant, transformational, agile, and digital.
In this episode, you will learn:
1. What are the traits in different leadership frameworks?
2. What are the pros and cons of different leadership styles?
3. Which frameworks makes a leader the most effective?

"Authenticity is about showing up as your best self."
I was surprised to learn that only 29% of employees believe their leaders are effective at human leadership. This made me wonder what exactly human leadership is. According to Gartner human leaders need to be authentic, empathetic, and adaptive.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. What is human leadership, and why is it important?
2. How can leaders practice human leadership effectively?
3. Why are so few leaders 'human leaders'?

[00:08:56] - According to Microsoft Research, nearly 50% of employees are burned out at work and 53% of managers are also reporting that they are also burned out. As a leader, it's important to practice empathy and self-empathy.
[00:13:31] - Gartner says human leaders need adaptivity. They must enable flexibility and support that fits team members' unique needs. They need to understand each person's unique needs and adjust their leadership style to the situation and what the individual wants. According to Gartner, introverts need different environments than Extroverts.
[00:16:48] - Authenticity, empathy and adaptivity are good traits of human leaders, but only 29% of managers seem to have these traits. We can feel stuck in so many ways - our relationships, our careers - our lives in general.

1. How to stop feeling stuck
2. How to gain clarity about what you want and what you don't want

Chapter Summaries:
[00:00:01] - This week on her Leadership Coach podcast, Rochelle talks about feeling stuck. She explains why some people feel stuck in their relationships, in their jobs, and in their lives. In general. Rochelle believes we always have choices, but sometimes we don't want to make them, which is making the choice to not make a choice.
[00:04:57] - Sometimes it feels good to wallow in the feeling of stuckness. Once you make a decision to become unstuck, something's going to have to change, and that can be scary for people. The first step is to make the decision that you're going to stop feeling stuck.
[00:06:19] - Being stuck is a lack of clarity around the choices available to you. To gain clarity, you need to think through what you want and what you don't want. One of the ways to gain that clarity is to journal. Another is to talk out your options with a friend. But be aware of judgement.
[00:09:58] - The most powerful way to gain clarity is to take a small step and find out if it feels closer for you or further away from what you want. The more closely an action ties to your values, the more motivated you are to take that action. Rochelle explains how to tie your values to the new course of action.
[00:14:13] - After making a decision, you need to accept where you are and be grateful for it. The lawyer got some coaching that helped her gain some clarity, and she did some work with her values. She decided she wanted to start her own business. She cut back on the extra hours at work and used the extra time to start a business.

"I use that to guide me quite a lot because I know courage is where my growth happens."
I'm a big advocate for courage. In fact, one of my mantras is courage over comfort. And I use that to guide me quite a lot because I know courage is where my growth happens.
So what is courage? The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as the ability to control your fear in a dangerous or difficult situation.
One of the things I hear again and again from my clients when they first start with me is the thing holding them back from a leadership role is because they don't have enough confidence. And what I've learned is that the real thing that's missing is how to be courageous.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
What is courage? The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as the ability to control your fear in a dangerous or difficult situation. How does that show up at work?
What is the opposite of courage? The opposite of courage is the idea of running away from fear. It's not doing anything that might even result in fear.
How can we get courage? I share two ways I use to get the courage to do things even when I'm feeling fear.

Chapter Summaries:
[00:00:02] - This week on Her Leadership coach, Rochelle talks about courage. Rochelle is an advocate of courage over comfort and uses it to guide her daily life.
[00:00:56] - Courage is the ability to control your fear in a dangerous or difficult situation. In the Facebook group this week, Beverly talked about courage for leadership around making decisions and sticking to them. Tracey added that every step and act in life takes some level of courage. To Rochelle, courage is taking action in spite of fear.
[00:09:41] - Rochelle worked out loud talking about how it was taking courage for her to post in a public work forum, and mentioning if she could help one person then it was worth it.
[00:18:08] - Another tool I use to find my courage is curiosity. When I'm procrastinating and I start to feel something, I get curious and start thinking about it. This shifts my thoughts and allows me to move through the fear to the point I can take action.

"The power comes when you choose what that mindset is going to be, as opposed to being buffeted by the winds of what happens to you during the day in fact, even that sentence contains a mindset, a belief, a story, a thought."
I'm always trying to learn new things and grow as a person. I am especially intrigued by the idea of mindsets.
A growth mindset is the idea that you can grow and improve your intelligence and abilities, while a fixed mindset is the belief that you are born with a certain level of ability and there's nothing you can do to change it. I realized that I have a growth mindset in some areas of my life, but there are still some areas where I have a fixed mindset.
In this episode, you will learn:
How our mindset affects almost every part of our lives, for better or for worse.
The power of the mind, including the placebo effect and the importance of a growth mindset.
How we can shift our mindset from one that limits us to one that empowers us.

Chapter Summaries:
[00:00:29] - Every Monday morning in the Women's Leadership Facebook group, kristen and Tracey choose what mindset they want to kick the week off with. Mindsets affect almost every part of our lives, and some of them serve us well, some not so much. For example, Tracey's mindset is how she thinks about the world and herself. Kristen's is how her head will let her process what's coming. There's a lot of research on the power of the mind.
[00:07:11] - A growth mindset is the idea that you can grow a fixed mindset is where you believe that you are born with a certain level of intelligence or ability and there's nothing you can do to improve it. A meta mindset is a mindset that can shift all mindsets.
[00:12:37] - There are many different types of mindsets that can be used to describe a person's view of the world. A person can change their mindset if they are open to it. The Accelerate Your Leadership Academy works on changing people's mindsets. Every Monday morning in the Facebook Group.

"The quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you ask."
I was recently talking to a client about a career dilemma she was facing. She was considering taking a job that was a step up into leadership, but she wasn't sure if it was the right fit for her. So I helped her by asking the 'quality' questions.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
What are some quality questions you can ask yourself to change your life for the better?
How can asking yourself certain questions help you get clarity about your career next steps?
What are the benefits of shifting your mindset from scarcity to abundance?

Chapter Summaries:
[00:00:30] - A client had a question about what to do with her career. We had a session on getting some clarity about her next steps. A few days later, she got an almost perfect role for her in her team. Unfortunately, the manager of the team wasn't a good fit for her.
[00:04:40] - There are questions that don't make a big difference in your life, but there are other questions that feel more life changing. The quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you ask. The way my life has changed over the last few years is due to the questions I have been asking myself and that others have asked of me.
[00:08:19] - The first question is to imagine yourself one year in the future and looking back at the decision you made a year ago, what's the first thing that comes to mind when you know that you are really happy about the decision that you made one year ago?
[00:09:48] - In the accelerate your Leadership Academy one of the main focuses is on self-worth. The questions to be asked are: if you know you are amazing and that anyone who hires you is lucky to have you, would this job be the right one for you? If you don't know this without a shadow of a doubt, it might feel a little bit sad. But it's okay to accept that. If the job is going to be part of working on your skills or helping your sense of self worth, it can help you make the decision. If it's about working on particular skills, identify those skills and start to work.
[00:13:15] - Mindsets are the beliefs you hold that shape how you see the world and the way you see yourself within the world. Mindsets shape your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. In this episode, the author challenges you to shift your mindset from scarcity to an abundance mindset.

[00:00:01] - Quiet quitting is when you only do the tasks in your role description within the hours you're paid to work. It was coined in 2009 at an economic symposium in Texas. In the last few months, quiet quitting has become quite a trend on TikTok, especially for those in the Gen Z and Millennial age range.
[00:01:50] - According to Gallup, 50% of American workers currently fall into the quiet quitting category. In Australia the trend isn't as noticeable as it is in America. There are four reasons why it makes sense to quitely quit your job and one reason not to.
[00:11:00] - Acting your wage is another term used for quietly quitting. If you want to get a leadership role, you need to be acting the wage of the role you want, not just the one you're in. Aspiring leaders need to act as role models to avoid burnout.

"Self awareness can make us better at our jobs, better communicators in the workplace, and enhance our self confidence and job related well being."
As a leadership coach I believe that being aware of your thoughts and feelings is one of the most important parts of being a leader. This week, I talk metacognition, or thinking about our thinking and self-awareness. According to research, among other things, self-awareness can make us better communicators in the workplace, which is exactly what we need to be as leaders and aspiring leaders.

[00:00:01] - Rochelle is the her leadership coach. She believes that being a leader from the inside out is the most important part of the accelerate your leadership method. She was listening to a book this week, all about Metacognition, which is thinking about our thinking. Self awareness is the ability to observe and accurately identify one's thoughts, feelings and behaviors. According to research conducted by Sutton, Williams and Allenson in 2015, self awareness can make us better at our jobs, better communicators in the workplace, and enhance our self confidence and job related well being.
[00:08:59] - When we practice metacognition and self awareness, we can uncover our biases and bring our behavior back into alignment with our values. She encourages people to give it a try, as it can help them to uncover their biases and build better relationships.
[00:13:36] - There are three ways to get better at thinking about all the things. The first is journaling. The second is to talk it out with someone you trust. The third is to sit in silence.
[00:16:51] - Mark Manson is the author of the Subtle Art of not giving a F*ck. He suggests that when practicing self awareness it's best to go only a few layers down until you start repeating yourself. He illustrates this with a story from 16th century India where a young man climbs a mountain to speak to the sage at the top.

"As leaders, we are called to be a role model to others. We want to show them that self care is important so that they can do so, too, without feeling guilty about spending time and money on themselves."
I went on a retreat last week and it was amazing. I used to feel guilty when I took time out for myself, but now I realize that it's actually really important. As leaders, we need to be role models for others and show them that it's okay to take care of themselves.
So this week, we're talking about what gets in the way of self-care, and how we might embrace the habit instead. It's not always easy to make time for self care, but it's worth it.

How to manage up in a way that will actually accelerate your next promotion.
How to get your needs met outside of your manager
How to let your manager know what you're capable of without appearing to be a bragger.

Chapter Summaries: [00:00:01] - Rochelle is the her leadership coach. On the podcast, Rochelle is talking about how to manage up on today's episode. Managing up can feel daunting at first, but it's simply good relationship management.
[00:01:12] - After ten years in public service, she has learned a lot about managing up. Today she will talk about three techniques that will help you manage up in a way that will actually accelerate your next promotion.
[00:04:55] - As an aspiring leader, you need to build relationships with your team, your colleagues and your boss. You need to find out if your boss is an introvert or an extrovert. If they are more task oriented or people oriented, adjust your communication with them accordingly.
[00:08:19] - There are two reasons why people feel their bosses are difficult: Their values aren't the same as their employees', and/or they're not meeting their needs. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the founders of Apple, didn't have the same values, but together, they changed the world. It's okay to have different values from your boss. It doesn't make one of you better or worse than the other.
[00:10:38] - It's time to show your boss what you can do when you're not in the room, listening for opportunities to share stories that highlight things you've accomplished in the past, letting your boss know where you want to go in your career and what will help you get there ahead of time.

"You have far more choice in what your values are than we are led to believe"
It took me a while to get to my leadership role the second time around (after kids). So I refused to quit trying even when I suffered knockbacks and difficult times trying to get to my leadership role. All because of my why. I was determined to make a difference by doing leadership in a way that was going to have a positive effect on my team rather than a negative one – and that was based on my values of fairness and making a difference.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
Chapter Summaries:
[00:00:42] - If you want to make a positive difference to your life one of the first steps is to identify your values. The second is to take stock of how well you live your life according to your values. When we live in alignment with our values, we have more energy and life satisfaction.
[00:04:22] - Being a leader in itself is not always easy. Unfortunately many people give up trying and convince themselves that they never really wanted to be a leader. It helps in getting to a leadership role to know your why. And underlying your why is your values, your deepest values and your goals that align with those values.
[00:06:34] - There are clues as to how well you are living in alignment with your values. If you feel icky or triggered at the moment, you might be out of alignment with the values behind those feelings and need to look for a solution to bring yourself back into alignment.
[00:08:29] - Rochelle's word for 2022 is "intentional". It is important to live in alignment with your values and to make intentional choices about what your values are, and what you do and don't do based on those values.
[00:14:06] - I invite you to consider what do you value most? I encourage you to get down to your top five values to help decision making and keep you focused. Then ask yourself if you are living your life aligned to those values yet.

"Try this first. Think about what you're assuming this will say about you, and by default, what you're assuming they will think about you if it goes wrong. And then I challenge you to come up with a completely different meaning, a completely different reaction that you could assume someone was going"
I turned 50 this year, and I made a commitment to myself to do 50 new things before the year is over. It's important for leaders to be willing to try new things. It shows that you're willing to take risks and that you're open to new ideas.
Sometimes people won't try new things because they're afraid of what others might think if it doesn't go according to plan. But I challenge you to reframe what the possible outcome could mean. It might not be as bad as you think.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
What's so good about trying new things?
Why is it so difficult for people to try new things?
What if you're wrong about the meaning you've put on something?
Resources: Women in Leadership Facebook group
Chapter Summaries: [00:00:01] - Rochelle turned 50 this year. She made a commitment to do 50 new things before the year is over. Being willing to try new things is an important trait for a leader.
[00:02:23] - For some people, the last new thing they tried was 20 years ago. Some new things are easy to try, like a new lipstick or a new color of beer. Other things are a bigger deal, like jumping out of a plane or swimming with sharks.
There are things in the middle that people are still afraid to try. They think failing at them means something about them. What if you put a different meaning on something? What if not hearing a response of I love you from the other person simply means they come from a family that never said it before? If choosing a restaurant that turns out to be awful means you and your friend both have a good laugh about it, if not being able to work out how to use the Digital Planner straight away is a great way of role modeling to your team,
[00:10:36] - Tracy's daughter has been teaching herself Spanish, and she'd asked Tracy to learn it with her. Tracy had let her fear of being terrible at it and the meaning that being terrible would disappoint her daughter, stop her from doing it altogether. Giving it a new possible meaning has allowed her to take action and start to learn the new language.

The words we use - both to others and to ourselves - have the power to shape our reality and change our world for the better. Do you know that the words you speak can shape your reality? "Your words are powerful." I was listening to the Her Leadership Coach podcast the other day and it got me thinking about the power of words. Our words are so powerful and so often we don't realise it. We can use them to positively or negatively impact ourselves and those around us. Just one word can change the meaning of a whole sentence. The next time you're talking to yourself or someone else, be mindful of the words you're using and how they might be received.
Words can shape our reality and change our world for the better.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
The power of words to shape our reality
The importance of using positive words when talking to ourselves
The significance of the words we don't use
Chapter Summaries: [00:02:11] - There are a few three-letter words that can make a difference to how a sentence lands when you're talking to someone. The author has been working on reducing his use of the word 'but' for a while now.
[00:05:56] - Carol Dweck coined the Term “growth mindset”, which is a belief that we have the ability to better ourselves through effort, through learning and through good teaching. A fixed mindset is the belief that you are born as you are and you can't grow anymore. One of the exercises to help children and adults change from this fixed mindset to a growth mindset is to add the word “yet“ to a number of sentences.
[00:09:32] - Positive and negative words affect us on a deep psychological level and have a significant impact on how our lives turn out. Negative words release stress and anxiety inducing hormones.
[00:13:19] - Today's first challenge is to come up with a new phrase to replace a negative one you use with a positive one. Decide in advance and write it down so that you don't have to think of something on the spur of the moment. Over time, it will build the neural pathways and you will find that you stop using the old phrase and start using the new one.
[00:15:11] - The last point of today's talk is about the words we don't use. When we just don't address the elephant in the room. We turn our backs on it, pretend nothing's gone on and we've got nothing to say.
[00:16:27] - Today's second challenge is to think about the words you're not speaking right now and what it is you're scared about saying them out loud. Next, think about how would the best leader version of you find a way to speak the words she's afraid of?

"I've come to see energy as one of our most precious resources."
Hi, I'm Rochelle, the Her Leadership Coach, and I help quietly determined career women step up into leadership roles.
In this episode, we're finishing up the work we started last week on the three pieces of the puzzle to getting things done without stress.
This week, we're focusing on energy, habits, and systems.
I believe that energy is one of our most precious resources, and we need to do everything we can to protect it and work with our natural rhythms. Our productivity is shaped by our habits, so it's important to be mindful of what we're doing and choose habits that will benefit us. Systems can help us be more productive by taking away the need to make decisions or reinvent the wheel every time we do something.
I hope you find this information helpful and that it allows you to lead the way, her way.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How our habits shape our productivity
2. How energy levels affect our ability to focus and be productive
3. How systems can give us back our freedom

Chapter Summaries:
[00:01:15] - Last week, we went through the first three pieces of the puzzle: clarity, the scientist mindset, and being a person of integrity. This week, we're looking at the remaining three: energy, habits and systems. The six areas fall under the framework:. Who do I need to be? How do I work? And what do I do?
[00:02:35] - Energy is one of our most precious resources. We need to protect our energy and work with the natural rhythm of that energy. Get the sleep, eat the foods that give you energy and do the exercise. Work with our energy rather than against it. Think about when you are naturally most awake.
[00:08:13] - Habits are important because they affect our productivity and stress levels. It's important to be mindful about what you're doing, and cataloging your habits is a good place to start the phone, picking up, drinking coffee and going for a run are some of the habits that can be changed.
[00:11:09] - Systems are a set of practices and procedures that are applied to specific activities to achieve a specific result. Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and others have a system for their clothes, so they wear the same clothes every day. System gives you back your freedom and gives your brain more space for creativity.
[00:14:40] - If you have a couple of minutes to rate and review the podcast, I'd really appreciate it.
