This podcast is committed to educating you on health related conditions, breaking down health complexities and making it easy and understandable for you.
Research is ongoing to better understand what causes dementia, but the underlying mechanism is thought to be related to a build-up of proteins in the brain that interferes with how the brain functions or works.
Dementia is caused by damage to brain cells due to this proteins.
This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other.
When brain cells cannot communicate normally, thinking, behaviour and feelings can be affected.
Dementia is a general term for any disease that causes a change in memory and or thinking skills that is severe enough to impair a person’s daily functioning (driving, shopping, feeding, working, communicating, etc.).
It affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement. Consciousness is not affected.
