For Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2022, a group of senior nutrition students at the University of Saskatchewan created a podcast series to educate and advocate for eating disorder awareness. The podcast will feature guest speakers sharing their personal experience and/or professional expertise.
Ken Mullock, a Trans Health Navigator and Registered Dietitian, and Brooke Ferguson, someone with lived experience, join Chelsea, Lauren, and Karlee to discuss their experiences as part of the LGBTQ2S+ community. Ken Mullock discusses the increased risk of eating disorders in the trans community; why eating disorder rates higher among trans and gender diverse people; what allies, friends, and family members can do to support transgender loved ones with eating disorders; and what health professionals can do to combat the high eating disorder rates in trans populations. Brooke Ferguson shares her personal experience with an eating disorder; how being bisexual has influenced her body image; how the media has contributed to her views on body image; what has helped her improve her relationship with food; and advice to offer people struggling with an eating disorder. Brooke advocates for body positivity and mental health, and a large portion of her fully accepting herself was embracing her sexuality!
