This is a weekly podcast for fans of speedway wanting to hear more about the folks that make the sport work. I'm Michael Wright, your host and ably supported by co-host Lynne Murray.
From riders to mechanics to promoters, the media etc speedway is a vast family and everyone within the sport has a story to tell.
We continued our chat where Rick disputes his 1990 World Final finishing position and tells us about working with Hollywood heavyweights as a stuntman.

We have split our chat with USA and Coventry Bees legend Rick Miller into two parts as there was so much to cover.
In part 1 we find out about the formative years going from BMX to motocross then speedway and racing with Ole Olsen to his first World Final in 1990 at Odsal.
Stay tuned for Part 2 where Rick disputes his 1990 World Final finishing position and tells us about working with Hollywood heavyweights as a stuntman.

Myself and Lynne were joined with fans of Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Smederna in Sweden - Ruth Hannah, Elliott Hunt and Cornelia Blomberg. We covered a lot of ground with some of the major talking points of the season including the British Final, guest usage, Speedway of Nations etc.
The second part is to follow next week which will include predictions for the top 3 at the British GP in Cardiff.
A good chat.

It was great meeting Plymouth Gladiator and Kent Royal star Alfie Bowtell. Alfie talked about positivity around the sport, the mad dash from racing to be there for the birth of his child, help from Andrew Silver and other topics. We wish him well, he is in good form and could be about to break into heat leader form in the Championship the way he is going.

It was really good to catch up with Cam Woodward who was over in the UK on a trip over from his homeland. He reflected on his British League career but also shared stories about his travels and mates in the sport. An interesting guy to chat too, top man.

We had a good chat with Belle Vue asset and Birmingham reserve James Pearson and found out about his career so far.
He described the lifestyle of a young man travelling to the other side of the globe and having different bases in different countries with some goodwill shown by families helping him out. He talked of his influences and about the profile/branding side of the sport with his distinctive pink colouring on his race gear. Top talk!

We met one of the people charged with putting Danish speedway back on the map and more popular as a sport in Denmark. Former rider and film director Joachim Nielsen.
Many parallels with the issues facing speedway in Britain and it was nice to focus on the future of the sport and compare notes - acknowledging that we are talking together about one of the most exciting and dangerous sports on the planet.

We caught up with James in a period of recovery from a bad hand/finger injury sustained recently at Redcar.
He talked about his hunger to race and his support set-up with his dad as mechanic and about how to improve as a young rider.
Also an actor, there’s more than meets the eye. James was unable to join by video but his voice carries fine on the recording.

We met another force of nature, Barry Bishop who co-promotes at Ryde, Isle of Wight Speedway.
We learned more about the exit from National League racing and the freedom that moving out of the mainstream league system has afforded Barry and the venue, examples include the NORA British Upright Championship and British Ladies Speedway Championship coming up at the track. Barry talks at length about the race day experience and urgent need to make the sport more appealing to the wider public.

We (Michael and Lynne) decided to take a look at the speedway season in Great Britain and in the World Championships after the first few months of the season. Lots to reflect on and our predictions for the Speedway GP in Teterow tonight!
By the way, Lynne mentions a young rider looking very bright as Luke Henderson, correction, she means Luke Harrison 👍

We had a great chat with Nicolai Klindt and the time flew, we should do it again!
We had hoped that he would get back with a British Premiership club but a lack of offers means that he has committed to Dackarna, back to his first top-flight Swedish track.
A good open chat where Nicolai shared his thoughts on Brexit and GP wild cards among other issues.

It was great to spend time with a true force of nature. German speedway/grasstrack/longtrack rider Martin Smolinski is a one-man multi-talented businessman.
It was interesting to hear reflections from his time in the UK with Coventry and Birmingham as well as arguably the highlight winning the 2014 New Zealand Speedway Grand Prix becoming the first German to do so. Some great impressions of formula 1 cars versus electric racing cars!

We had a good relaxed chat with the Peterborough Panthers legend Mick Poole who has also seen service at King’s Lynn, Poole and Oxford with a career highlight appearance in the 2002 Speedway Grand Prix in Sydney.
Mick talked a little about his reluctance to see his son Taylor go into speedway racing among a fair few topics.

We took the opportunity to meet with former rider, CLRC Champion and more recently Birmingham Brummies co-owner David Mason for this chat.
David was very open and candid in his reflections on his racing career, confidence issues and feelings of being jinxed at times. He also explained why the situation co-running Birmingham with his father Peter became untenable. An interesting chat with a rider best remembered for his time at Arena Essex and particularly Rye House.

Part 2 of 2.
It was a great conversation with a man who has done virtually everything in speedway including involvement in running tracks such as Peterborough and Coventry as well as being a close friend to all-time speedway legend Ivan Mauger. He is also a freelance journalist writing for the Daily Star and Speedway Star among other publications.
We recorded this in two parts, there was so much to cover in terms of Peter's thoughts about the sport.

Glasgow Tiger and Belle Vue Ace Connor Bailey joined us to talk about his career and his aspirations.
This episode was recorded in late February 2022 and follows on nicely from Episode 3 with Lynne Murray where she told of her support for the rising star. Connor talks about how he is looking forward to his first full season at Glasgow and talks of becoming a British rider and joining up with Team GB.

Glasgow fan Lynne joined us in Episode 1 as a guest co-host and will be on the podcast a lot more.
The background to this was that we had got together ready to record with a former rider who didn't arrive (there's a story behind the mention of alcohol at the end!) and so we recorded with Lynne as the subject. As with most die-hard speedway fans, she has interesting views and a story or two.
It was an interesting chat which demonstrates that speedway fans are salt of the eath people, genuine and caring about the sport and those within it.
Lynne tells a story of how the loss of her husband has turned into a way of benefitting others and she tells of her support for Tigers rider Connor Bailey.

This was a great chat recorded in late January with the reigning British Speedway Champion Adam at home in France in the off-season. He spoke of his excitement at the strength of the Sheffield Tigers line up for 2022 and ambitions of success at European level. We talked about the current state of British speedway and highlighted how it needs to do more to attract new fans. The current British Champion and clearly very proud of that achievement.

For our first episode, we talked with Roddy McDougall who is the author of 'No Breaks - a lost season in British Speedway.'
Roddy's book is a marvellous read and very insightful portraying a hopeful but cautionary time in the sport in Britain which sets the context nicely for this podcast as we go out and talk with people in and around the sport. Many thanks to Lynne Murray who joined us, a Glasgow Tigers fan who joined as a co-host with us to talk with Roddy.
