Are you feeling resentful of your current clients?

Are you giving out all your gold dust for free on hour-long discovery calls?

Then it may be time to start charging for strategy.

This week Hannah chats with Maggie Patterson, Editorial Director and Founder of Scoop Studios and host of The BS Free Service Business podcast.

She has been self-employed for 18+ years and, as a former freelancer turned agency owner, she knows exactly what it takes to make it when building a business offering services. Maggie works as a consultant to service-based businesses as well as offering simplified content marketing solutions to her agency clients.

One of the most common challenges Maggie sees with solo service business owners is that they find themselves faced with an income ceiling and she knows the secret to unlock more income - charging for strategy!

Key takeaways

  • Discovery calls are not for you to wow potential clients with your skills.
  • If you feel like you’re under-charging, you’re probably not taking into account all the strategy work you’re doing behind the scenes.
  • Have the courage to say no to clients who don’t fit the criteria.
  • Once you’ve decided to charge for strategy, create a plan to promote your offer.

When it comes to content, quality over quantity is always the best strategy.

This week, Hannah talks with Chelsea Evans-Flower, founder and CEO of Scott Social.

Chelsea has always been entrepreneurial and, despite previous mentors recommending she “think smaller”, she worked hard to build a successful business of her own.

Chelsea shares the lessons she learnt while building a successful social media marketing agency and the ways her agency now supports businesses in their content creation.

For many solopreneurs, content creation can be an overwhelming task that often falls to the bottom of the to-do list. Chelsea and Hannah share their insights for developing a content strategy that’s easy for you to cope with.

  • Choose your channels selectively - which 1 is your priority?
  • Think critically about where you’re going to get clients from.
  • Posting 2-3 times a week is the sweet spot to always have content circulating.
  • Consider your user at ALL TIMES.

“Aim for value, alignment and impact.”

What is trauma-informed sales?

What does it mean when we take this approach?

On this week’s episode, Hannah and Lea Morrison, a trauma educator, coach & healer, discuss why it’s important to have a trauma-informed approach to sales and our business.

There are 5 principles to this approach:

  1. Safety
  2. Choice
  3. Collaboration
  4. Empowerment
  5. Trustworthiness

When we approach sales or any other parts of our business that impact our audience, we must ask ourselves the question,

“Am I representing these principles?”

Lea’s key takeaway is that the more responsibility and integrity we take, the more of a positive impact we will have.

In this episode, Hannah talks with Amanda Hutchinson from AKP Brand Stories.

Amanda started out as a wedding photographer as a side hustle from her 9-5 job in Crisis Management.

Over the years, Amanda moved from public to private sector supporting companies and brands with crisis management.

She felt like she constantly lived in doom and gloom until she reached the weekend where it was all sunbeams and rainbows taking photos for her photography business.

Amanda moved away from weddings as she found telling the stories of different brands more compelling.

What really helped was during her time shooting weddings, she used to take pictures of the set up and send the images to different vendors for their business. This is where she developed a love for brand stories and a great network of independent business.

Key Takeaways from this episode are:

  • Before you have a brand shoot you need to think about the type of messaging you want to convey and think about the type of photos that will fit.
  • Brand images give you a professional look as a business owner.
  • Stock imagery can be problematic, especially in terms of diversity. Create your own stock images to use for your business.
  • Having a library of images you own, helps you create your content quickly and easily using templates.
  • It also helps you show up as you, even when you are not feeling it.

Magic Canva Tip: App within Canva called “Bulk Create” that helps you bulk upload content to a template. Making creating content like testimonials or reels quick and simple!

In this episode, Hannah is joined by LaSean Smith from CAGR.

Before he became a solopreneur, LaSean worked in the tech corporate environment, so he knows personally about the mindset shift between corporate and solo business.

With CAGR, LaSean invests in other solopreneurs so that they can accelerate their journey of success.

LaSean draws on his corporate experience to help navigate himself and others through the often tricky solo business experience.

His experience is also useful to know what not to do!

Top takeaways from LaSean:

  • It’s essential to know who exactly you are marketing to. You can’t market to everyone.

  • Talent Stack - figure out what makes you unique. What are your experiences? What are you exceptional at?

  • Think about your systems and processes. Really know what they are and how they work.

  • Being a solopreneur can be lonely so create a personal board of directors. Fill it with people who will support you, dream with you and develop with you.

In this week’s episode, Hannah is joined by Amber Hart who shares her solopreneur marketing journey.

Amber Hart, of Hey Amber is a copywriter, project manager and website designer who works with neuro-divergent and female coaches, therapists, storytellers and creatives.

Like a lot of people at the time, Amber lost her job due to the pandemic. Not wanting to go back to being an employee, Amber decided it was time to strike out on her own.

Amber initially started out as a Virtual Assistant (VA) but, after finding herself interested in copywriting, she decided to take Chantelle Davison’s VA Copy College and learn how to start her own copywriting business.

During this time, Amber was facing some barriers in her personal life and was diagnosed with ADHD and Autism.

For years Amber had felt stuck and struggled to fit into “the box” that seemed prescribed to her. After her diagnosis, however, Amber had a lightbulb moment, realizing that she can do things her way.

Amber credits Hannah’s support as the biggest factor in her shift in attitude and approach to marketing her business.

Hannah was able to guide Amber and give her tough, but gentle, love to help Amber unlock her full potential.

Amber is now able to connect deeper with her ideal clients and has chosen to work with women, copywriters and creators whose experiences and stories are similar to her own.

In this episode Hannah is joined by Kristy O’Leary from Decade Impact to talk about the importance of marketing for socially conscious businesses.

Decade Impact works with small and medium enterprises to help them define, measure, manage and communicate their impact.

All of this work goes towards helping businesses gain B Corp certification.

A BCorp is three things:

  1. An assessment to help companies build better practices.
  2. A certification that proves they have better practices.
  3. A social Movement.

Kristy explains that they help businesses measure what they are doing now, and also understand opportunities for making further positive impacts in the future.

Hannah and Kristy talk about the difference between greenwashing (marketing your business to appear more socially and environmentally conscious than it actually is) and greenblushing (neglecting to share all the positive impacts your business makes for fear of “being canceled”).

Kristy emphasizes the importance of:

  • being a story brand to help connect with your audience.
  • using data to back up your impact claims.

Her advice is to imagine you’re taking your audience on a journey with you and inviting them to see both the highs and the lows.

Transparency is key. Even if you don’t achieve your goals. Being vulnerable helps build deeper trust with your audience.

You may wonder how you as a solopreneur can make an impact…

Kristy talks about how you can do this by supporting local vendors, women owned businesses or other minority groups and filling your supply chain with as many businesses as you can that make an impact themselves.

If you do this, measure the impact you've had. How many of these businesses have you supported?

You can then share this data in your marketing to show other solopreneurs how they can make an impact.

Kristy’s final thought is on the importance of sharing and being involved with impact as a global community.

Knowing that someone else is helping to make a difference, can make the world seem like a less lonely place.

In this week’s special panel-style episode, Hannah is joined by four guests to explore networking for introverts and how introverted entrepreneurs can build meaningful relationships both online and offline.

Amber Hart, of Hey Amber is a copywriter, project manager and website designer who works with neuro-divergent and female coaches, therapists, storytellers and creatives.

Jane Carter, of Jane Carter Coaching, built a successful therapy practice before turning her sights to business-coaching, where she helps solopreneurs and small business owners bring more money, freedom and joy back to their businesses.

Shannon Russell, host of the Second Act Success Podcast, is a career transition coach and certified YOUMAP coach whose focus is in helping women become the best version of themselves, while they pursue a life they dream about.

As a mix of introverts, extroverted introverts and ambiverts, the panel share their personal experience with networking, the challenges they’ve faced and the solutions they’ve found.

They discuss how being an introvert can often wrongly be perceived as shyness, how social media can be just as draining as in-person events and some of the roadblocks they come up against when networking.

The top takeaways from the panel’s discussion are:

  • Forgiving ourselves when we can’t or don’t want to show up on social media. We don’t need to criticize ourselves.

  • Owning our vulnerability or anxiety at an event as acknowledging it makes it easier.

  • Seeking out places in which we feel comfortable for networking.

  • Making connections on our own terms.

In this episode, Ashley Lyons from Dynamic Online Marketing joins Hannah to discuss the challenges she faced marketing her solo business.

After years managing her in-home daycare and managing the social media for her husband’s business on the side, Ashley decided to take the next step and launch her own business as a social media manager and virtual assistant.

Ashley attended school to train for her chosen career change but found the experience was focused more on preparing her to be an employee than CEO of her own business.

Ashley connected with Hannah through an internship, where she later signed Hannah as her first client. When Ashley was offered the opportunity to sign up for the beta version of Set Up For Success, she jumped at the chance.

Ashley shares how her experiences participating in the Set Up For Success coaching program helped her:

Agatha combines 15 years of corporate digital marketing experience with a life coaching certification to help new business owners launch and grow their business. Are you feeling like your business is maxing out in growth and earning potential?

In Episode 6 we meet with Audrey Joy Kwan of AJK Consulting to talk about the importance of creating systems and processes within your business that will help you to take your business to the next level of growth or earning potential.

Audrey is a business and leadership coach for agency owners who emphasizes the importance of a systems and processes approach to organizing a business that does not rely entirely on you.

During our meeting, Audrey suggests that before a person can consider growing their business (with a team or income-earning) it helps to create a system that a solopreneur can repeat and reuse with every new client or team member they bring on.

If you feel like your business has topped out, and you can no longer earn more without adding more team members this episode will help you understand why it’s valuable to create these processes before you add people to your team.

Knowing who your ideal client is, is a vital piece to your business. You need to know what their pain points are and how you can help them.

In Episode 5 Hannah and Nicole talk about why it’s important to know what types of services you will sell and know how to package them.

Knowing your clients why not only influences their motivations behind looking to outsource tasks but it helps you as a service provider to know how you can solve their problems.

Selling your services can feel uncomfortable for many service providers. They undervalue their worth and how much they should sell their services because of “money blocks”.

A concept where people have specific beliefs regarding their worth and how much to sell their services for based on how they were raised.

If you’ve been struggling with knowing how to package up your services, this episode will help you think about the types of issues that might be limiting your earning potential.

During our call with Cricket, we discussed our experiences of finding our paths and how we found our greater purpose”.

Cricket offers her the wisdom of chasing her life's purpose and the obstacles she met along her way to get there.

She shares the idea of having your purpose merge with the happiness of where you are at in life and the vision that inspires your future. Through shifts in your mindset, Cricket suggests that unintentional thoughts drive your emotions and behaviour which can influence us to feel stuck within negative situations. She suggests that through a change in our thinking, we will see a change in our results as well.

Hannah and I found this interview to be incredibly inspiring with accepting your present life and your aspirations for your future.
