What experiences in life helped you grow the most?
Everything changed for me when I accepted into my life as Lord and Saviour. I was alone sitting on my bed reading a pamphlet back in 1989.
As I read I knew Jesus was real, that He died on the cross for my sin and I needed Jesus as my Lord and Saviour.
This day started a whole new journey of faith and life. It was a amazing period of change and growth.
It is ongoing journey that God promises will continue until Jesus comes back…

I am away from home at the moment for some training for my chaplaincy role. Often when I am away I do not sleep very well. Last night I got 4.15 hours according to my FitBit watch.
I have learned not to get frustrated by this and often I get up and pray and read my Bible. I actually started my devotions at 2:18am this morning.
Today I read Psalm 121:1-8. It is a great Psalm that talks about God being the maker of heaven and earth and how He cares for us.
As I read this passage again I was drawn to the phrase “The Lord watches over you”. This idea is found three times in the short passage. In the NLT it is mentioned in verses 3, 5 & 7.
I really like the idea of the Lord watching over me. It makes me feel like a truly loving father is watching over me at all times. I also like that it says He never slumbers in verse 3.
I find it comforting to know that not only is God is watching over me but He is also awake with me and I can talk to Him at any time.
Hmmm it is now 4.42am, a bit early to go for a walk…I might sit and talk with God some more.
Two words have been on my heart this morning. They started when I woke up and then did my morning prayer time. The words are knowing and known.
As I reflected on this I realised my heart is all about knowing Jesus more and more. More of who He is, what He has done and what He is going to do. And this knowing is not just head knowledge but heart knowledge.
Like most of us I come to know Jesus more as I spend time with Him in prayer, as I read His words in the Bible and as I consciously try to walk with Him each day. It is about joining Jesus on the road of life.
Out of this knowing Him comes the second word known. Out of the outflow of His love and presence in my life, I want to make Him known to others. It is like an ongoing circle, the more I know Him, the more I want to make Him known.
Without even really noticing these two words have been embedded in my life. Knowing Jesus and making Him known. This is my heart right here. This is what I desire to do. At the end of my life if someone described my life, I would be happy if they said the bolded words.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, I pray each and every day I will come to know You more and more. I pray out of this knowing that I would help others come to know You too. I ask in Your name, Amen.
Psalm 18:1-3 NLT – I love you, LORD; you are my strength. [2] The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. [3] I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies.
I love theses verses. It is David’s response to God saving him from his enemies. I love the way he says “God is my…” a number of times.
David says God is his rock, salvation, fortress, place of safety, shield and strength. He proclaimed who God was to him after a very difficult time.
As I reflected on this I realised that sometimes we need to go through the valley of hard times to really appreciate who God is to us.
At times in my life I quoted Scripture to help me in times of need. This is a really good thing. But it wasn’t until really hard times came that I learned to hold on to the God who backs up the Scriptures.
I found in these times I learned to hold on to both the Scriptures for comfort and assurance and also the God who loves me and holds me in the palm of his hand.
There is nothing like really hard times that bring us to the point of falling on our knees before God and crying out to Him. It is a place where we come to the end of ourselves and the beginning of Him.
It is in this place where we learn, like David did, that God is our rock, our fortress, our strength and our safe place. He is the one we can run to in our times of need.
Prayer
Dear God, I thank You for being my rock, my fortress, my strength and my safe place. I pray that when I go through hard times I can run to You to be my refuge. Amen.
Romans 10:9-10 NLT – If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
Declaration is very important thing. As you can see from the passage above it is part of the salvation process. We need to declare Jesus is Lord of our lives.
This morning as I was doing my devotions it was impressed upon me to make some declarations of my own. I felt that I needed to record a prayer in my journal and declare it out aloud. I am not sure why, but God prompted me to declare my faith and trust in Jesus and who He is.
The prayer…
Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God, the Messiah. I believe You died on the cross for my sins and I believe You were raised from the dead. I believe you are seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven. I believe You are coming back for me so I can live with You forever. Amen.
As I said I am not sure why I had to do this? Maybe obedience? Maybe God wanted to hear me say it afresh? Maybe it was to declare it to the powers and principalities? Maybe it was for this blog post? Maybe for all the reason above?
When we declare with our mouth truths about Jesus – who He is, what He has done and what the Bibles tells us He is going to do – it is powerful. It can change our attitudes, it can raise our spirits and it can change the atmosphere around us.
I would encourage you to try it today.

“Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?” Romans 8:35 NLT
It is great to know that if we are in relationship with Christ nothing can separate us from Him. Unlike human relationships that often break down over time through stressful situations, nothing in all creation can separate us from Christ’s love. His love for you is eternal, never ending and complete. His love for you is unbreakable!
Prayer
Thank You Jesus that nothing can separate me from Your love. Help me to remeber this truth always. I am Yours and You are mine. Amen.
I really like this thought from today’s Our Daily Bread. It talks about choosing forgiveness and give an example from marriage…
“Eighty years of marriage! My husband’s great-uncle Pete and great-aunt Ruth celebrated this remarkable milestone on May 31, 2021. After a chance meeting in 1941 when Ruth was still in high school, the young couple were so eager to get married that they eloped the day after Ruth graduated. Pete and Ruth believe God brought them together and has guided them all these years.
Reflecting on eight decades of marriage, Pete and Ruth both agree that one key to sustaining their relationship has been the decision to choose forgiveness. Anyone in a healthy relationship understands that we all regularly need forgiveness for the ways we hurt each other, whether through an unkind word, a broken promise, or a forgotten task.”
Psalm 107:10-16 NLT – Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery. [11] They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High. [12] That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them. [13] “LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. [14] He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains. [15] Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. [16] For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron.
In this passage we see the people were in chains and then they cried out to God. Once they did this, He freed them. Let us look at the progression.

The people were in chains of misery. Why? Because they rebelled against God’s Word and counsel. (V11-12)

They cried out to God for help and HE saved them (v13)
-
HE led them from darkness and broke their chains (v14)
-
The people praised God for saving and releasing them (v15-16)
All true freedom starts with crying out to God. HE alone is the one who can truly set people free. In this life we can be bound up by so many things, but only God can truly free us.
Prayer
Dear God, I feel like I am bound up in chains. Today I come to You and cry out. I ask that You will free me. Help me to listen to Your Word and Your counsel. I ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
I am aware that I need Your help Lord…
with every breath that I receive
with every step I take
with every thought I think
with every glance I see
with every prayer I pray
with every person I help
with every verse I read
with every bite I eat
with every sip I drink
with every rest I take
with every interaction I make
I am aware that I need Your help Lord.

One of the things I have been reflecting on lately is that Jesus often touched people. It didn’t matter if they had Leprosy or other diseases he still touched them with compassion.
This is particularly interesting because in Jesus’ times if you touched someone who had leprosy you instantly made yourself ritually unclean. You then had to go through an intense washing process to be “right” again. Because of this many Rabbis and Teachers of the Law avoided touching people, it was a social and spiritual taboo.
This is one of the great things about Jesus. He could have come and sat on a throne and issued teachings from afar, but instead He chose to live amongst the people. He walked, talked, healed, taught, touched and ate with people every day.
If you have a perception that God is a far off and distant God who is removed from His creation, I would encourage you to look at the life of Jesus and see what God is really like. I think you will find, like I have, that He truly was a hands on Saviour.

Isaiah 55:1 NLT – “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink- even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk- it’s all free!
Coming to the Lord if you are thirsty is a common theme throughout the Bible. We see it in both the Old and New Testaments.
In Exodus the Lord gave water to the Israelites when they were walking through the desert to Mount Sinai (see Exodus 17:1-6). God told Moses to strike the rock and water will flow.
The same offer of water is part of Jesus’ discussion with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:13-14). He said the water He gives will bubble up inside them and they will never be thirsty again.
Jesus repeats the offer to the crowds in Jerusalem (John 7:37-38). He said that anyone who believes and comes to Him, will drink and streams of living water will flow from them.
Finally, John records it at the final stage of his revelation (Revelation 22:17). In this passage Jesus calls us to drink freely from the water of life…everlasting life.
In all of these passages we see the ongoing call to come to the Lord if we are thirsty. We see that the Lord wants to give us the water of life. The water that satisfies not only for this life, but for all eternity.
If you are feeling dry in your faith and life at the moment, I would encourage you to come to the Lord afresh today. Imagine yourself at the edge of the waterfall in the image above and call out to Him.
Don’t hold back, just dive in and be refreshed. He has more than enough for us all!
The Bible says in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”.
That is a great verse. It says that if we confess our wrongs to God them He WILL forgive us. It is a guarantee no matter what we have done or how bad we may have been.
But one thing I find interesting about this verse is the verses just before and just after.
Verse 8 says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us”. Wow that is pretty heavy. If we say we haven’t sinned (or we self-justify our lives) there is no truth in us.
Verse 10 goes on to say that, “If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives”. That is a huge thought, we make a liar out of God if we say we haven’t sinned!
An important thing to remember in all of this is that we all need forgiveness. If we have never made our connection with God, asking forgiveness if part of that process. If we already a Christian, we still need to confess our sins.
The truth is that none of us are perfect. Ninety per cent of the time we might have the right attitudes, we might do the right things and we might love and serve God, but sin has a way of creeping in and we get led astray.
The key thing to remember is that confession is an important part of a healthy life. Not only does it keep us right with God, but it frees us up from holding on to unnecessary guilt that ways us down and stops us being all we can be.
Prayer
Dear God, I come to You and confess my sin. I am sorry for all the wrong things I have done and the wrong attitudes I have held. I am also sorry for the things I know I should have done, but did not do. Please forgive me now. Please help me to follow You. I ask in Jesus name, Amen.
1 Corinthians 15:3-5 TPT – For I have shared with you what I have received and what is of utmost importance: The Messiah died for our sins, fulfilling the prophecies of the Scriptures. [4] He was buried in a tomb and was raised from the dead after three days, as foretold in the Scriptures. [5] Then he appeared to Peter the Rock and to the twelve apostles.
In 1 Corinthians 15:3 the Apostle Paul shares something he considers is of utmost importance. There is a lot in this verse so I am going to break it down.

The Messiah died for sins – this is talking about Jesus who came to die on the cross for our sins. He took our punishment, so we could become right with God.

Fulfilled the prophecies – for centuries the prophets had been talking about a long awaited Messiah who would come. When Jesus came He fulfilled over 300 prophecies in his birth, life, death and resurrection.

He was buried in a tomb – the Bible also speaks about a Messiah who would die and then be buried in a borrowed tomb. Jesus was placed in a tomb and a large stone was in place to keep it secure.

He was raised after three days – the Bible tells us that after three days in the tomb, Jesus was raised to life. The power of sin and death was broken. Again this was shown to fulfil many Scriptures.

Jesus appeared to His followers – verse 5 tells us that Jesus appeared first to His Apostles. He showed them His scars from the nails in His hands and feet. In the weeks after the resurrection Jesus appeared to more than 500 people.
These five things are core to the Gospel message – Jesus died for our sins, He was buried, He rose to life in three days and He appeared to many people. All of this was to fulfil many prophecies.
This Christmas I hope you will remember what the Apostle Paul described as utmost importance. It is my hope that you will not only remember the birth of the baby Jesus, but the life, death and resurrection too.
Jesus died to pay the price for our sins. That is the ultimate Christmas present we can receive and of utmost importance to us all.

I love this from Our Daily Bread today. It reminds us how precious our prayers are to God…
“In the book of Revelation, the apostle John describes “four living creatures” and “twenty-four elders” worshiping the Lord in heaven. Each one was “holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people” (5:8).
Just as incense was precious in the ancient world, our prayers are so precious to God that He keeps them before Him continually, treasured in golden bowls! Our prayers matter to God because we matter to Him, and through His undeserved kindness to us in Jesus He offers us uninhibited access (Hebrews 4:14–16). So pray boldly! And know that not a word will be forgotten or misplaced because of the amazing love of God.”
2 Timothy 1:5 NIV – I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
Sincere according to the dictionary means “free from pretence or deceit; proceeding from genuine feelings”. So sincere faith is a genuine faith that flows from real feelings. It is free from pretence or deceit.
What a great way to be described as a Christian – someone who has sincere faith!
I want to be someone who has a sincere faith that other people see. I don’t want others to see a surface level wishy washy faith in Christ, but a deep biding faith and penetrates every fibre of my being.
As we see in the verse above where the Apostle Paul is writing to Timothy, sincere faith is also a faith that is passed down. It is passed down from generation to generation.
Let us purpose in our hearts to have a sincere faith that penetrates every fibre of our being. Let us purpose to have a faith that not only effects those around us today, but the generations to come.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, please help me to have a sincere faith. I want to be known as a sincere Christ follower who effects this generation and the generations to come for Your Kingdom. In Your name I pray, Amen.
My wife sent me this video of a fire where a Bible accidentally placed in a fire did not burn. She encouraged me to read the comments. It mentions lots of house fires and other fires where the Bibles remained in tact.
Proverbs 11:25 NLT – The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
As the end of the year is fast approaching and many people are feeling tired and needing a break, the above verse can help. It promises us two wonderful things…
