A pressure washer is a great cleaning tool because it uses water at high pressure to force away dirt and grime. But water at that pressure can also do damage to building materials. While these tools are great for concrete drives and vinyl siding... other surfaces require some though and care. Wood, hardboard and fiber cement siding can be cleaned with a pressure washer... but use. Using the sprayer too close to the surface can remove paint or gouge the material. The same is true for wood decks and fences... keep a little distance. Windows and doors however, should never be cleaned with a pressure washer. The high pressure water can blast past their seals... damaging them and creating a mess inside.  Spend a few extra minutes and wash them by hand.

A wood deck is a wonderful place to spend a sunny afternoon, but that wood takes a beating from the weather, so from time to time it needs a little TLC. Rain, snow and the beating sun not only make a deck dirty, they can also break down the wood fibers. And changes in temperature make the wood continually expand and contract, leading to cracks. What it needs is a little protection, in the form of a deck sealer or stain/sealer combination. Before you apply it though, you’ll need to clean the wood with stiff scrub brush and some detergent. If you have access to a pressure washer that speeds the job up, but be careful not to gouge the wood. When the deck is dry you can apply the sealer with a roller or pump up garden sprayer and then work it into the gaps and cracks with a paint brush.

Squirrels can be entertaining and they always seem to be the first in line at the bird feeders. But these furry little entertainers are NOT that friendly when it comes to your home. Squirrels are often responsible for damaged wood around your house where they chew through to gain access into the attic. They even chew up lead roofing pipes just to sharpen their teeth. And if they ever DO get into your attic, they create nests, leave smelly messes and can even chew wiring and create a potential fire hazard. Professional pest control is your best option for removing the squirrels, but you can lessen their desire to get inside by creating a separate feeding area away from your home and stock it with two of their favorite snacks --- peanut butter and sunflower seeds. You’re happy...they’re happy...and you save your home from damage

When you spend the time and effort to make your house look good on the outside, you don’t want something like a dull, gray patio to take away from its beauty. Making concrete complement your home is easy. First, clean the concrete thoroughly. You can use specialized concrete cleaners or use a pressure washer to remove any trace of dirt, mold and mildew. Next, apply a coat of concrete stain. This stain can be a solid color or translucent. I personally like the translucent style so any features of the concrete can still show through. Once the stain is dry, add a little pizazz by applying a coat of high-gloss masonry sealer. Not only will it look great, but you get the added benefit of the stain and sealer protecting the concrete.

Because they sit idle all winter, lawn mowers are often neglected tools. But taking care of a few maintenance chores early in the year will ensure that your mower works well for you all summer. First, check the air filter. If it's the paper type replace it. The foam type can be washed with soap and water. When it dries condition it with a drop or two of motor oil. Speaking of oil... check it! If it's darker than the color of tea ... change it. It's probably a good idea to change the spark plug too, for more reliable starts. Next... sharpen the blade. You can do this with a hand file, a bench grinder, or even a belt sander. If the blade is too worn... replace it.

Many of the cleaners we use for our bathrooms use bleach and other harsh chemicals to disinfect and cut through soap scum but this chore doesn’t have to be an assault on your sinuses. You can make a great cleaner that will disinfect and deodorize by simply mixing a one-to-one solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Once clean and dry, coat the shower door with one of the many water repellant formulas available designed for car windshields. This treatment creates a barrier between the water and the glass so water droplets run off quickly. That means dirt and soap scum roll right off and water droplets never get a chance to calcify on the surface, so all you need to clean the glass is a soft cloth and water.

Even great paint won’t stay on a house long if the surface isn’t properly prepared before it’s applied. So, a little extra work up front will save lots of work later. Paint won’t stick well on a dirty surface, so the first order of business is cleaning. Tri Sodium Phosphate mixed with water makes a great cleaner for painted surfaces, but be sure you rinse it well with a garden hose or a pressure washer. Any paint that’s bubbled or cracked needs to go, so some sanding and scraping may be necessary. If you expose the bare wood you’ll want to apply a coat exterior primer over those areas so the topcoat will stick properly. Finally, apply some quality latex caulk to all the gaps or cracks and once it dries, you’re ready to paint.….

Everyone knows you need sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. The same principle applies to a wooden fence; but instead of burning, the wood will turn gray, warp, crack or cup. The solution begins with a thorough cleaning. Use a detergent made especially for fences or decks and a pressure washer to remove the dirt, algae and mold that are causing it to discolor. It’s important that you don’t allow the cleaner to dry on the wood. Rinse it off within 15 minutes and be careful not to use too much water pressure. Wood should be washed with pressure between 500 and 800 PSI to prevent damage. Once the fence is clean, you’ll want to stain or seal the wood to help protect it from the sun’s UV rays. An oil stain is the best choice to really penetrate and protect your fence for years to come.

Almost every home has special trim work outside. From brick moulding around doors and windows, boards that outline the eaves, or exterior crown moulding ….this trim has a way of adding definition and style to a home. But, because these are wood pieces on the outside, they’re constantly under the barrage of Mother Nature. Both weather conditions and insects can deteriorate trim before you know it. When it’s time to replace that trim, consider using cellular PVC instead of wood. Cellular PVC looks just like wood, comes in a smooth or a wood grain finish, and it will never rot, warp or be attacked by insects. It will cost about 20% more than a wood product, but you will NEVER have to replace it again.

The difficult things about painting a door when it’s vertical are the drips and runs that always happen. If you take the door down and paint it horizontally, you solve that problem but that means you have to wait for one side of the door to dry before you can paint the other. The solution is a simple one. Drive two 3-inch screws into the bottom of the door near each edge leaving about two inches exposed. Then drive one 3 inch screw into the top of the door at the centerleaving the same amount exposed. Rest the exposed part of these screws on a sawhorse at either end of the door. When you finish painting one side you can lift the door by the two screws on the bottom and pivot it on the single screw at the top to continue painting the other side.

We aren’t the only ones who get more active in warmer weather, so it’s no surprise when the ants go marching one-by-one across your kitchen countertop. You grab the ant spray, give them a blast or two and wind up throwing away food and cleaning up a toxic, smelly mess of insect spray. If that sounds familiar, there’s good news because there are safer methods that you'll love using to get rid of these pests. Mix up a little soapy water in a spray bottle and spritz it along their trail. To keep them out of your pet’s food, set their food dish in a pie-pan of soapy water. And instead of poison powders and toxic sprays, try chili powder to create an insect barrier. Inside or out, it's safe, inexpensive and non-toxic. This summer, wage a safe, non-toxic war on the ants with weapons that blast them and not you.

Every Spring the hood of my truck turns yellow for several weeks because the pollen in the air is so thick. That's no fun for folks with hay fever and allergies but it also makes a mess of porches, patios and decks. The problem is that the pollen is so fine that sweeping or dusting only stirs it up to land somewhere else. The only answer is to wash it away. First, move all the furniture, planters and accessories off the patio or deck surface and mix up some mild detergent in a bucket of water. Rinse the surface and then gently scrub the floors, shutters, columns and railings with a soft bristled brush.... I like the kind that will thread onto a broom handle. Then rinse it all again and repeat the process with the furniture.

Window screens seem to be a magnet for dust, dirt and cobwebs, but because they are also somewhat fragile, cleaning them can be a pain. The best way to do the job is to submerge them in soapy water. But how? Well, a child’s pool will work for smaller screens but for larger ones you can build your own pool. Nail four 2x4s together, each about 6 feet long, on a flat, level surface to create a square. Over the square you’ll drape a piece of plastic that overlaps each edge by about a foot.  Add some water and detergent and you have a window screen bathtub. Let the screens soak for a while before you scrub them with a soft bristled brush or a broom. Follow that with a good rinse and your screens are ready to go.

Before you fire up the grill this summer, be sure it’s clean. Not just to impress your guests, but to keep it safe. Grease build-up in a grill leads to those nasty flare-ups that are dangerous and can ruin a good steak. On a gas grill, that means first cleaning the drip pan and the shields over the burners. For a charcoal model emptying the old ashes will usually do the trick. As it starts heating up, scrub the grates with a wire brush to remove the excess grease. If you don’t have a grill brush, use a crumpled up piece of aluminum foil. To cut the grease on the outside of a stainless steel grill, you’ll want to use a cleaner designed specifically for that surface. Now, get that grill clean and enjoy the warm weather.

Paint and varnish can go bad or dry up even in a tightly sealed can because there’s always some air trapped inside the can. So, a half full paint can... is also half full of air. And that air causes the paint to dry and form a skin on its surface.

Next time you seal a partial can try this:  Carefully push a layer of plastic wrap down onto the surface of the paint and press the edges of the plastic wrap against the sides of the can.... making sure there’s no air trapped beneath the plastic. The plastic will keep the air in the can from contacting the paint and prevent a skin from forming on the surface of the paint. Next time you open the can... toss the plastic wrap and get painting.

Caulk not only improves the appearance of a paint job, it also seals out moisture and drafts.

But sometimes caulk joints fail because the crack they cover is too wide. If a gap is more than a quarter inch wide  you'll want to first fill the void with a product called “backer rod.” This material is essentially a roll of foam rubber rope that's available in several diameters. You force the rod into the gap with a putty knife and push it down just below the surface. Then apply the caulk on top of the backer rod to completely seal the gap.
