Understand that negative thoughts are not yours and it is your amygdala trying to protect you because you responded to the negative thoughts with fear. This activated your sympathetic nervous system and caused your body to be in panic mode (Fight, Flight or Freeze). So, put in the work Consistently and over time your mental health will improve. Tap into your spiritual connection (God) trusting that something bigger than you is helping you through which can aide in your recovery.

Kyra Fisher interviews Chrisrandra, a woman who used to use drugs and alcohol to deal with pain and trauma in her younger years. Chrisrandra is now a chaplain and peer support specialist at a nonprofit organization. Chrisrandra has been through a lot of trauma in her life, including being abandoned by her father, being sexually assaulted as a teenager, and being trafficked into prostitution. She is now in a treatment facility. Kyra explains that trauma refers to any negative experience that negatively impacts a person's life. They also talk about the power of prayer and the Holy Spirit in helping them get to a place where it's time to deal with their addiction. Chrisrandra, Kyra describes her experience with her ex-boyfriend and the abuse he inflicted on her. She talks about how she was in a relationship with him for years and how he abused her trust and made her feel like she was his "slave. " She describes how she felt like a prisoner in the relationship and how she had to learn how to say no and speak up. Kyra and Chrisrandra discuss what they would say to someone struggling with mental health issues. Kyra suggests seeking professional help and surround yourself with loving and kind people. Chrisrandra suggests finding a Christian counselor who can teach you how to be your own therapist and coach.
