**Armed with the success of the Hall Brothers greeting cards, J.C. and his brother continued to innovate. Their first foray into other product lines came in 1917 when the Hall brothers "invented" modern gift wrap. **In 1969, the Rankin-Bass company, in association with Mushi Production of Japan, produced a thirty-minute animated television special of Frosty the Snowman that featured the voices of comedians Jimmy Durante as narrator and Jackie Vernon as the title character. **Checker Taxi****

*Inspired by John Hertz who had set up a taxi business in Chicago (later known as Yellow Cab Company) in 1910, Markin began buying up Checker Taxis' vehicles in 1924, gaining full control of the company in 1937. Markin followed Hertz's business plan in having drivers open doors for the fares, and outfitted each driver with a uniform. Competition for fares was fierce in the 1920s ***...and the easily spotted drivers began ganging up on one another between fares. The fighting between the two cab companies escalated to the point where Markin's home was firebombed which prompted Markin to relocate Checker Taxi to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Checker became the first cab company to hire African-American drivers and the first to require that drivers pick up all fares, not just white ones.

**The Space Shuttle****

**What spacecraft will replace the shuttle?****

****When the shuttle craft is finally retired, the 'Orion' will takes its place. First authorized by Pres. George W. Bush in 2004, the 'Orion' has undergone a number of design changes. It will carry a crew of 4 or 6 astronauts and will be launched from Space Complex 39 at the Kennedy Space Center.

President Richard M. Nixon formed the Space Task Group, chaired by vice president Spiro T. Agnew. They evaluated the shuttle studies to date, and recommended a national space strategy including building a space shuttle.

The Shuttle program was formally launched on January 5, 1972, when President Nixon announced that NASA would proceed with the development of a reusable Space Shuttle system. The final design was less costly to build and less technically ambitious than earlier fully reusable designs.

This is a seriously cool bridge, located in Leeuwarden, Netherlands (where else?) You’ve got to love how the roadway has a cutout for the arm to drop into.. awesomely clever!

One thing I’d like to know is, since there are so many Dutchmen in northwest Iowa, why we don’t have a bridge like this near Sioux Falls. Granted, they’re mostly a generation or two removed from the Old Country, and we don’t have much for canals or boat traffic… But still, what’s the hold up?

Universal Product Codes (also known as GTIN-12) appear as lines (bars) of varying widths representing the series of numbers commonly shown below the bars. Barcode scanners, as you will know them from your favorite retailers, read the bars and convert them back to the 12-digit UPC number that they represent. Coral Reefs [trivia]

*The word REEF originated from German word REF.* This word was introduced by mariners and signify underwater ridge or rock derivation organic as well as inorganic, being a danger to ships.

Today this term refers only to organic structures, originated from accumulation of reef-builders' skeletons (today the main reef builders are corals... that's why the most common reefs are coral reefs!)

Reefs have dense structure resistable to wave action. The fastest growth of reefs are in coastal water zone on depth not bigger than 32 feet.

Many organisms have been built reef-like structures since the begin of Paleozoic era (about 570 millions ago...whew!). There were Archaecyatha (they had been living only during the Cambrian period) and Algae.

Magic has been practiced for a very long time. In fact it goes back as far as 50,000 B.C. Can you believe it, 52,000 years ago magic was started?

Prehistoric people who buried cave bears probably started "magic". They probably did this as a magic rite (spell). Scientists believe those drawings and carvings are a form of magic. For example, hunters would probably draw animals or hunting scenes before going on hunting trips. They probably believed that the drawings would come to life while they were gone. They believed in its power but it didn’t actually work. By drawing the scenes they gave themselves self-confidence. That was their magic.

Do you know what a Joule is? James Prescott Joule was born in Manchester, England, in 1818. Like Ampere, he was home schooled and was sent to university at Cambridge when he was sixteen. The Industrial Revolution was in full swing at this time, and one of Joule's ambitions was to replace steam-driven engines with electric motors, so his first investigations were into the production of heat. Since Joule's research was self-funded, he was free to pursue the areas he wished and this resulted in him establishing the equivalence between heat and mechanical work as well as the cooling effect of rapidly expanded gas (the latter of which is used in refrigeration systems). Publius Helvius Pertinax Became emperor in 1 January AD 193.

Whatever the nature of the conspiracy against Commodus, it brought to office in his place a better man, Publius Helvius Pertinax, prefect of Rome and former governor of Britain; but only temporarily, as an ominous pattern of events unfolded such as had followed the death of Nero.

Pertinax reign might have been a short one. But it formed an enormously important precedent. Pertinax is understood to be the first 'Soldier Emperor' or 'Praetorian Emperor'. They were raised to the throne by the provincial legions which they commanded and ruled only till ejected and killed by another soldier who seized the succession.

Where They Came From: The first Eskimos immigrated to Alaska from northern Asia, specifically the Siberian Arctic. Archaeologists set the date at somewhere between 2,000 and 8,000 years ago, after the land bridge across the Bering Strait had been reclaimed by the ocean waters. These migrants probably crossed in umiaks, skin boats large enough to hold a family.

Numbers:

About 28,000 Eskimo Americans live in Alaska today; there are also about 11,000 Eskimos in Canada, 22,000 in Greenland, and 1,200 in Siberia. An estimated 32,000 Eskimos lived in Alaska just prior to contact with the white man.

Stalag Luft III Stalag Luft III was a Luftwaffe (derived from the words "Luft"= air and "Waffe"=weapon,is a generic German term for an air force) run prisoner-of-war camp during World War II that housed captured air force servicemen. It was in Poland, 100 miles southeast of Berlin. The site was selected because it would be difficult to escape by tunnelling. However, the camp is best known for two famous prisoner escapes that took place there by tunnelling, which were depicted in the films The Great Escape (1963)

Great Escape war hero dies

Alex Lees, a Second World War veteran whose heroism was immortalised in the classic film The Great Escape, has died, aged 97.

Mr Lees was a prisoner at the Nazi camp Stalag Luft III in March 1944 when scores of Allied servicemen tried to flee. The pensioner, who spent his last years at a home for ex-service personnel in Erskine, Renfrewshire, was a gardener at the camp and helped prepare the tunnels used in the escape. - All commercials at the end Today! Born in 1928, John Nash graduated from Princeton and eventually went on to win the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994. Of course, much of his fame also comes from his life story. In 1959, Nash was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia for which he was treated for nearly a decade.

His work following his time in a mental hospital led up to his winning many awards in the field of mathematics. His creation of the Nash Equilibrium (a simple concept of rationalization) led to his winning of the Leroy P. Steele Prize in 1999.

His life was under the microscope in the Ron Howard film "A Beautiful Mind" which starred Russell Crowe in 2001. Crowe's performance as Nash won an Oscar as well as Howard's direction and the screenplay. The film also took home 'Best Picture'.

The parking meter has been almost unchanged since it started driving in 1959: one meter per space; put your money in the slot. In driving in Northern Europe younever see parking meters; You buy a piece of paper at a parking automat (typically one per block) and put it on your dashboard. Why the difference? I assume that available technologies are the same on both sides of the Atlantic, so it must be that the lower wage in the U.S. of the low-skilled meter collectors leads us to choose individual meters.

Why the change?

One would think it’s because the price of the kiosks has fallen steadily while even low-skilled wages continue to rise — to the point where the European-style technology is now cost-effective.

How to Spot Counterfeiting

Due to continuing improvements by U.S. mints, it's pretty tough to make counterfeit bills credible. However, there are still counterfeiters out there. It's not as hard to make paper money that will at least pass to a cashier's till, and new technology is used on the black market to create counterfeit bills. It takes a skilled eye to spot some counterfeit money, as well as attention to detail and a few moments to scan different parts of the bill.

Some people are just plain silly... The superstition that walking under ladders is bad luck is fairly widespread. In America and Europe, this belief originated around the late 1700s.

There are a few theories as to the original thought behind this superstition. The first is that a ladder leaning against a wall forms a triangle--or trinity--with the ground. Walking through this triangle is disrespectful to God and may show your sympathy to the Devil.

Whatever the origin of the superstition, there is a practical reason not to walk under ladders: you might get hit by something falling from above.

Michael Jackson was the subject of the controversial 2003 documentary "Living With Michael Jackson." It profiled Jackson's hectic lifestyle and included his children. The show was hosted by British journalist Martin Bashir. Originally produced for the BBC, it earned strong ratings in the U.S. as well when it aired on VH1 and other networks. Jackson has repeatedly referred to the special as inaccurate and unfair. Neither the host nor the show's parent network issued any retractions or modifications, but Jackson later released videos from his personal camera which he'd had present at every interview with Bashir. From that recording it showed Bashir's original answers to Jackson, which he excluded in his documentary, and it showed things in a different light. Born to a wheelwright (and occasional harpist) Mathias Haydn, the only artifact he retained all his life was a wheelmaker's hammer used by his father. He kept this in a specially made ornate box.
Haydn's nickname as a child was "Sepperl". Although his full name was Franz Joseph Haydn, he didn't use the name Franz, which is therefore omitted in most texts nowadays. He also never spelled his name Josef.
Haydn was a good friend of Mozart, in whose house the two musicians used to play in string quartets

Scandals anyone?

Pete Rose "Betting on Baseball" scandal

One of the worst sports scandal is Pete Rose's banishment from baseball. The 1919 Black Sox scandal ultimately did more harm to the game, but Rose's case was much more tragic. Here you have the manager for the Cincinnati Reds, the sport's all-time leader in base hits, and he gets thrown out of the game for illegally betting on baseball.

Pete Rose was a Hall-of-Fame player, but a dubious manager. He was a first ballot Hall of Famer, and he threw it away because he had zero self-control. And make no mistake about it, Pete Rose bet on baseball, he bet on the Reds, and he knew the consequences should he be caught. A manager who bets on his own team sacrifices the very integrity of the game, and Rose should never be allowed to manage or have a job in baseball again.

He should, however, be recognized in the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a player, while noting his lifetime banishment for betting on baseball. To this day, ESPN has never covered a bigger story.

During a games against the New York Rangers, in November 1959 Plante got injured by a puck. After leaving the game, he was patched up but refused to return to the game without his facial mask. He created this mask and had been wearing it during practices since 1956. The idea of a facial covering was not a new idea, Clint Benedict wore a mask/nose guard when he had a broken nose during the 1920's, but after his nosed healed he never wore it again. In co-operation with Fibreglass Canada, they created the first goalie's mask. Plante was also the first person to consistently wear the mask during games. Today every goalie in the NHL is required to wear a goalie's mask. Plante was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978 and the Quebec Sports Pantheon in 1994

How did a mistake lead to the creation of America's favorite variety of cookie? In 1930, Ruth Wakefield was mixing a batch of cookies for her roadside inn guests when she discovered she was out of baker's chocolate. She substituted broken pieces of semi-sweet chocolate, expecting it to melt and absorb into the dough to create chocolate cookies. But the chocolate didn't absorb into the dough. When she removed the pan from the oven, Wakefield realized she had accidentally invented chocolate chip cookies. They were named "Tollhouse" after Wakefield's inn, and they remain the most popular variety of cookie in America. My Favorite cookie as well!

There's a two-sided problem with the polygraph that has become increasingly clear over the course of the past century: A person who can remain cool under pressure can beat a polygraph, and on the other hand, a person who doesn't handle stressful situations well may be inaccurately labeled a liar. Wild Huh?

Friday the 13th Trivia

It's Philip V, (1292-1322) King of France to your right.

This is interesting.

The fear of Friday the 13th is called "paraskavedekatriaphobia" [whew], a word derived from the concatenation of the Greek words Paraskeví (meaning Friday), and dekatreis (meaning thirteen), attached to phobía (meaning fear).

This is a specialized form of triskaidekaphobia, a simple phobia (fear) of the number thirteen, and is also known as friggatriskaidekaphobia.

There are many theories of why the occurrence of the date of the thirteenth coupled with the day, Friday, is considered unlucky, but my favorite explanation is due to this event: King Philip V (King of France), was threatened by the power that the order of the Knights Templar had gained and was eager to acquire their wealth, so King Philip secretly ordered the mass arrest of all the Knights Templar in France on Friday, October 13, 1307. The mass arrest resulted in the mass execution of most members of the order although it is believed some escaped and went underground for the rest of their days. King Philip’s actions resulted in the demise of the Order of the Knights Templar for all time.

A Spanish breed of pig called the Iberico, possesses, naturally, omega-3 fatty acids. This is the only pig known to naturally possess omega-3.

Also, quite recently at the University of Missouri, 5 cloned and modified pigs were produced with their muscle tissue stacked with omega-3 fatty acids. These modified pigs abide at the University of Missouri and are kept in very nice surroundings. There is little likelihood of any one them ever finding their way to our table. Diamonds were worn by aristocratic families to ward off the plague during the Middle Ages. The poorest people always died first, since they lived closer to the docks, where the ships often brought the plague from other countries. The rich had an idea that since the poor went first, that displaying their wealth (diamonds) would keep them from infection. Trivia should be fun -- and not many people make it as much fun as Johnee Bee, host of the "Mostly Trivial" podcast. The show is a nice balance of frantic silliness and straight-forward common sense.

The calm, even-voiced Johnee Bee hosts the quiz. He asks the questions, provides the answers and gives additional information about the subject. Introducing the show is Mr. Category Guy, whose deep, gravelly electronically altered tones don't quite disguise the fact that he's also Johnee Bee. And the same is true of Johnee's able assistant, Robot Boy, who speaks in a higher and more artificial-sounding voice.

The trivia's interesting enough; it's usually about things that a reasonably well-rounded person might know. But it's the production values that really make this podcast.

I don't know who Johnee Bee is, but he has to have a background in major market radio. His characters are deftly drawn, and with a few simple sound effects, he can paint an audio picture of Mr. Category Guy having one too many in his sound booth, or Robot Boy extending his hydraulic arm to give Johnee Bee the list of questions. Although all three voices are done by the same person, the conversations flow naturally, and the comic timing is impeccable -- these are mad editing skills at work!

And the podcast is peppered with all kinds of crazy and non-sequitur quotes and sound effects. Snippets from classic films, TV shows, and cartoons pepper the podcast, providing a counterpoint -- and sometimes humorous commentary -- to Johnee Bee's simple, straightforward delivery.

The choice of music is also brilliant. Johnee Bee uses the strange musical stylings of Coconut Monkeyrocket, which provide a Carl Stalling-like soundtrack to the proceedings (if Stalling was more like Spike Jones, that is).

I thoroughly enjoy this little six to eight-minute podcast, and only wish it came out more often. But I can hear the amount of production work Johnee Bee puts into each episode, and I know that probably won't happen without a bigger payday.

My suggestion? Syndicate it. One of the reasons I'm moving away from radio is the dull, uninspired "morning trivia" segments on some of my local stations. If "Mostly Trivial" was available as a segment radio stations could just drop in, then I think the show would be a much bigger hit than it is, and Johnee Bee might become as famous as Dan Orkin's "Chickenman" -- and for much the same reason.

Here's one for example... Cinco de Mayo is frequently regarded as the Mexican equivalent of the United States 4th of July. This is simply not true. Actually, it is the equivalent of the 5th of May. LOL. Of greater importance is the battle of Cinco de Mayo that occurred in 1862.

Juarez, who had been Zapotec Indian minister of Justice in Juan Alvarez' cabinet in the 1850's, entered Mexico City on January 11, 1861 and promptly expelled the Spanish minister, the papal legate, and members of the episcopate. Additionally, he took steps to enforce the decrees of 1859 disestablishing and disendowing the church. He could not have known at this time that almost a century later, "antidisestablishmentarianism" would become the longest word in the English dictionary.

Although Juarez was recognized by the United States and had received both moral and military aid from the US, there were over $80,000,000 in debts at that time to Europe alone. The Mexican Congress in July 17, 1861 decreed the suspension for 2 years of interest payments on the external national debt, and 3 months later a convention occurred between Great Britain, France, and Spain calling for joint intervention in Mexico.

Iceland was the last European country to be settled, mostly by Norsemen in the 9th and 10th centuries. They came mainly from Norway and in the Scandinavia area, and from the Norse settlements in the British Isles.

Marx Brothers Trivia

From 1929 on they were very active in film. Their first films they appeared as The Four Marx Brothers (Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Zeppo), but Zeppo left the movie business after Duck Soup. He didnt like acting much. From 1929 to 1949 they made 13 films. After that Chico and Harpo more or less retired, but Groucho started a second career as a show master in the quiz show "You Bet Your Life" which I use to watch as a kid late at night.

Famous Cities

Chicago!

The Century of Progress fairs of 1933 and 1934 were built on landfill just south of Grant Park. The Great Depression limited the original plans for extensive landfill activity. Yet the New Deal created an opportunity to make other improvements, such as the construction of Lake Shore Drive.

These improvements helped make the lakefront the focal point for citywide celebrations and a core of cultural institutions that now include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium, and the Grant Park Music Festival.

I went to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. All were fantastic!

Just before Christmas 2005, he experienced significant shortage of breath and other heart-related symptoms. On Christmas Day he entered Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills. During an eight-day stay he was treated for a lung infection and narrowed arteries. He received antibiotics and an angioplasty that included the placement of a double stent. The procedure was successful, but he was advised to take things slowly in the New Year.

The discovery of the magnetic compass was an event of GREAT importance in the history of people. It was the first documented instrument created by mankind that could be read using a precise scale. Of course the sundial had been around for a long time, but it doesn't move [just it's shadow does as you know]. There was the wind vane, but no precise way at that time to measure wind direction. If you think about it, it's pretty hard to measure direction in general, without a compass. The earliest known compass surfaced in China by at least the first century A.D. It apparently didn't arrive in Europe until the twelfth century A.D [1100's]

She was my 17 year old Wiemeraner. She passed away Tuesday Dec. 5th 2007, we'll miss her so much.

The Weimaraner's written history begins around 1880, when this breed was first exhibited at a Berlin, Germany dog show, where they were referred to as "l'mongrels".

The Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar (Germany), wanted to develop a multipurpose dog. It's nickname is the "Gray Ghost"; this comes from not only the Weimaraner's color, but also its ability to be quick, using an almost cat-like stealth while in the field, combined with a silent, almost shadow-like way of working.

After World War II ended, many soldiers brought home stories of this wonderful, strangely colored dog known as the Weimaraner. As people heard of these stories many wanted this new Wonder Dog.

Within six months a Weimaraner will go from a 3 pound puppy to a 70 pound dog with a mind of its own. It is not a plaything, nor should ownership be frivalous. Without proper training and socialization, this dog can become a neurotic, problem dog and almost impossible to manage. With hard work and love you will rewarded with an incredible companion.

For 12 years, the selling, importing, manufacturing and chewing of gum was illegal in Singapore. The ban was lifted in 2004 - - but the chewy stuff can only be bought at pharmacies. Customers must give their names and show an identity card before receiving their gum. Pharmacists who don’t follow these rules can be jailed for up to two years and fined $4,700!

In some parts of the world, especially the South China Seas, piracy still exists today.

Why?

The common misconception among citizens is that personal use quantities of chewing gum are allowed into Singapore. However, according to the set of Regulations, "importing" means to "bring or cause to be brought into Singapore by land, water or air from any place which is outside Singapore ..." any goods, even if they are not for purposes of trade. The set of Regulations also does not make any provisions for personal use quantities to be brought into Singapore. Therefore, bringing chewing gum into Singapore, even small quantities for whatever purpose, is technically prohibited.

“Who guitarist Pete Townshend is warning iPod users they may face hearing loss if they pump up the volume on the devices.

“Townshend, 60, said his hearing was irreversibly damaged from using studio headphones, and he now takes 36-hour breaks between recording sessions. its Not Nice To Fool Mother Nature

Some Do's and Don'ts on Feeding the Birds ( I love to feed the Birds out on our deck!)

A hanging feeder with sunflower seeds will attract numerous birds, but don't forget a suet feeder for the woodpeckers, nuthatches, titmice and chickadees, and a ground or tray-type feeder with cracked corn or mixed seed for cardinals, doves, juncos, sparrows and others that prefer feeding from the ground.

Water is a great attraction for birds, even in winter. A heating element for birdbaths will prevent freezing.

Placing a feeder near shrubs or other shelters will make birds feel safer. Ground feeders should be near cover such as a brush pile. A fence around the ground feeder may be necessary if cats begin hiding in the nearby cover.

Trivia, Hard as a Diamond

Fruit of the Carob. The carat is a unit of mass used for gems, and equals 200 milligrams or 3.086 grains. The word derives from the Greek keration (fruit of the carob), via Arabic and Italian. Lets Have a Drink Together

The Martini, gin and vermouth, is probably the most popular and widely consumed cocktail. Its origin is in dispute, but it dates back to about 1862. The Martini's popularity has waxed and waned, and its recipe has changed considerably over the years. Going from an original mixture that contained more Vermouth than Gin garnished with a lemon twist, to 2 to 1 gin and vermouth, to a 15 to 1 mixture, and finally straight chilled Gin.

There is also the Vodka Martini, but not as exciting. Standard Martini garnish is an olive, garnish it with a pearl onion and it is called a Gibson, my personal favorite!

Toys Toys and MORE Toys

Another popular but fabricated story of the yo-yo is that of a centuries old Filipino weapon. The story is about an assailant in a tree with a heavy oversized yo-yo waiting for a victim to pass below. At the critical moment the yo-yo would be hurled at the victim’s head presumably rendering him unconscious. A near miss would still allow the assailant a second opportunity.

Physics of the yo-yo make the story improbable. Although there is no question that the toy existed in the Philippines for centuries, as a popular toy, there is no documented evidence that it was ever used as a jungle weapon. The story was popularized by Duncan yo-yo demonstrators in the ‘30s, many of whom were from the Philippines. It was a great story and helped to sell yo-yos, but it has been repeated so often that it has become an urban legend.

Do we all love the Mouse?

Although the Mickey Mouse Club TV series premiered on October 3, 1955, the Mouseketeers made their first television appearance on July 17, 1955 - on the ABC broadcast special celebrating the opening of Disneyland.  Walt Disney was adamant that the Mouseketeers be regular kids, not actors. Producers searched schools looking for kids with that special spark.

The Mousketeers went to school 5 days a week on the Disney lot. Not only did they work 6 days but Sundays were often spent performing for the public. Being a Mousketeer wasn't easy.   The Mousketeers became close friends and remain so to this day. Sadly, the show only ran for 3 years and 360 episodes. ABC wanted to run more ads and Walt Disney refused. His contract forbid him from shopping the show to another network.   Jimmy Dodd died in 1964 at the too young age of 54. Roy Williams died in 1976.

Why are albatrosses so vulnerable? Albatrosses are exceptionally susceptible to longlining. They can't breed fast enough to cope with the rate at which they are being killed. Other species, with different life cycles, might be able to survive. Why is this so?
