“This is one of the self care things that I did: delete social media altogether for 90 days.”

— Amisha Shrimanker

We’re busting some myths on this episode of Captivate + Convert! First up: to grow your business, you have to HUSTLE.

My guest Amisha Shrimanker is living proof that the hustle myth falls flat — taking time off is actually part of her business strategy. Amisha heads up The Copy Crew, a boutique copywriting agency that works with online entrepreneurs and coaches.

I’ll tell you right now: this isn’t a rah-rah motivational episode where we pat ourselves on the back for building businesses we love. We get REAL about the struggle of having to take a cold, hard, honest look at your biz — and then fix everything you’ve been getting wrong.

In this episode, Amisha spills the deets on how she went from being a freelancer with ZERO boundaries to someone who books Fridays off and takes regular vacations from updating her socials!

Hit play and find a new way to work! You’ll learn:

  • How to take an intentional, proactive approach to connecting with your dreamiest clients — and stop taking every random job that comes your way
  • The mindset shift that helped Amisha say no to an amazing opportunity (and why it was the right choice for her biz)
  • How building regular, non-negotiable CEO time into your schedule will help you create offers that POP!

There are many reasons to choose entrepreneurship over a traditional job. We love to talk about time freedom, the personal fulfilment of being your own boss, and the joy of doing what we love… and yes, all those things are great!

“It’s almost unavoidable now, to see ‘success’ being a certain dollar amount, and that should be the metric for everybody… I never started thinking that I was going to have a 6-figure anything in my first year. I went into it wanting to work for myself.”

From celebrating small wins to overcoming mom-guilt, we get INTO IT. So put the kids to bed, grab a cup of tea (or wine), and hit play!

In this episode, you’ll learn:

“There is this outside pressure that we have to reach a certain bar, and I think that’s not the way to go about it… Don’t worry about what the other guru is doing and what your business bestie is doing. This is YOUR business — where were you last year and what do you want to do with it this year?”

— Donna Dube

Let’s unlock a secret weapon in your business: your metrics.

In this episode, Productivity Plus founder Donna Dube shares some great insights on how to match your mission and vision to the metrics that you should be focusing on, in order to maximize your time and your revenue.

Looking at numbers may not be as fun and creative as other aspects of your biz, but they’re definitely going to help you push the needle — if you understand what they’re telling you!

Your metrics help you figure out not only where you’re spending your energy in your business right now, but where you SHOULD be spending it in order to make the biggest impact.

This means the offers and initiatives with the biggest, juiciest profits…

The social platforms driving the most conversions…

… and the content strategies pulling in the most engagement.

You’ll definitely want to take some notes on this one (I did too!)

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The data you SHOULD be tracking regularly… and the vanity metrics you don’t need to worry about
  • Why it’s important to know where your website traffic is coming from
  • How to redefine what success means for YOU

“I’d grown up being sure that my purpose in life was to have a vocation that really helped people… I don’t think anymore that life should be all about serving other people. Being nice and doing good things for other people is great and really important, but I’m important, too.”

— Peta O'Brien-Day

This week’s episode is the first of a two-parter that digs into some pretty heavy topics.

Peta O'Brien-Day is a nurturing copywriter who helps biz owners nail a clear brand voice and connect with their dreamiest customers.

She’s also a mom who’s had a HELL of a rough road to entrepreneurship.

When Peta was 32 with a two-year-old son, her husband Mark was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer, told he had 18 months to live… and passed not long afterward.

Unbelievably tragic.

Peta was left to guide her toddler and herself through their grief, totally rethink her work and lifestyle… and eventually find love again. Along the way, she started a blog that shifted her career aspirations and led to launch her own biz.

Listen now to hear how she found her way to entrepreneurship after life on hard mode — then tune in next week for Part 2!

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How Peta successfully started over again after unthinkable tragedy (while caring for a tiny human by herself)
  • How to talk about death more helpfully with people who are deeply grieving — and why the usual go-to platitudes just don’t cut it most of the time
  • How blogging led Peta into a career she had never even considered before

“YOU are your business. Therefore, you’ve got to make sure that you’re doing the best that you can for your own wellbeing.”

— Rachel Letham

Should self care actually be a part of your business plan?

The short answer: YES.

My guest is Rachel Letham, a positive mindset and self care coach who helps successful-yet-stuck female business owners and stressed-out, ambitious moms achieve professional growth and personal balance.

The goal? Building businesses that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside!

Rachel helps her clients prioritize their self care and wellbeing, because you just can’t build an empire while burnt out. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re a solo business owner or running a team. If your business effectively is YOU, and you’re behind it, there is only a certain amount that you can keep doing and keep maintaining… before certain things give,” Rachel says.

By identifying your true needs and finding the right balance of structure and flexibility, you’ll be able to take care of business while ALSO taking care of yourself.

In this episode, you’ll learn how to identify and build boundaries around your self care non-negotiables and build your biz without sacrificing yourself in the process!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

“These days, there’s no loyalty at a job. They use you as long as they need you, and then you’re gone. If you have your own customer base… they’re not all going to fire you at once.”

“The online world is so flooded. I teach that you should build that brand foundation first, before you even worry about social media.”

— Taylor Daniels

I’ve heard your requests, and now I’m delivering — this episode is all about best practices for growing your biz using Instagram! My guest for today is Taylor Daniels, brand strategy coach and Instagram expert extraordinaire.

In 2019, Taylor was running a virtual assistant agency and noticed a lot of clients were requesting help in standing out on their socials in a saturated market. She also noticed that a lot of them weren’t putting in the effort to build their brand.

She found herself teaching them how to up their Insta game and build a solid brand foundation... two things which happened to be her specialties. In 2020, she became a coach.

Taylor is a genius at leveraging social media and is one of the few people using Instagram the right way, in my opinion.

“Instagram is a tool to bring people into your space. It’s a place to connect and then bring people into your sales funnel — your email list or Facebook group,” Taylor says. “Yeah, you can close clients on Instagram, but it should be more used as a driving force to get people into YOUR community. And then you can show up in your community every day with warm, hot leads that are ready for you to nurture them.”

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

The biggest misconceptions entrepreneurs have about using Instagram as a business tool

“You can’t think your way into a new state of being. You have to actually get out there and do something.”

— Alexa Martin

Wonder whether working with a coach is all it’s hyped up to be? Then this episode is for you!

Alexa Martin is a mindset and life coach who helps her clients break up with their phones and fall in love with their lives, but she wasn’t always a believer in the power of coaching.

In fact, Alexa resisted the idea of working with a coach for a long time... even while actively working on personal development!

When a nagging voice in her head wouldn’t stop wondering how much more she could achieve with a little help, she decided to go for it.

Her experience flipped the script.

Real transformation requires action items and accountability. “Working with coaches is honestly what really, really changed the game for me,” Alexa says. “You’re not going to change your life by listening to another podcast. You’re not going to change your life by reading another book.”

Not only has Alexa been working with coaches ever since, but her experience inspired her to launch her own coaching career!

In this convo, we talk about how Alexa went from studying math at MIT to helping people get unstuck in their lives, why you need to let go of the hustle mindset, and the book that first lit the fire inside her!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why it’s important to put YOURSELF before your business — and how this will actually help you book more clients!
  • How to understand the energy you show up with and change it for the better

“The stories we tell ourselves lay out how everything goes for us, and certainly our perspective on it.”

— Amy Collins

This week’s episode is the second half of my interview with copywriter Amy Collins!

If you missed out on last week’s episode, I definitely recommend checking it out. We dive deep into the psychology of storytelling in sales copy (and why you should be having a LOT more fun with your brand emails)!

This week, we focus on the stories that we tell OURSELVES.

(Hello, imposter syndrome??)

How you talk to yourself shapes the way you feel about yourself... and how you make decisions. Holding onto limiting beliefs can keep you from trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone.

And if you’re an entrepreneur or freelancer, this can have a MAJOR impact on your growth and revenue!

“If you’re going through your day thinking ‘I’m not ready for this client project’ or ‘I’m not capable of pulling this off,’ well, you’re putting yourself in a position to maybe not pull it off,” Amy says. “We create our own reality… what we tell ourselves absolutely dictates how we see the world.”

Tune in for a no-holds-barred conversation about mindset work, anxiety, CBT, family patterns, lizard brain stuff, microdosing, and so much more!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Where our internal stories come from — and why it’s SO important to let go of the ones that no longer serve you
  • Why positive affirmations and mantras just aren’t enough — and how to start creating new neural pathways
  • Tools that you can incorporate into your daily life in order to rewrite your internal narratives

“The most important thing is not so much what you share, it’s how you’re able to tie that into your CTA, but also how it is going to relate to your audience.”

— Amy Collins

How often do I get to record an episode that talks about both copywriting tips and erotic novels?

My guest Amy Collins is a copywriter who specializes in copy infused with attention-grabbing anecdotes and captivating brand stories. (And as someone who’s worked as an Uber driver, stand-up comic, novelist, and wine wholesaler, Amy definitely knows a good story!)

Why is storytelling SO effective when it comes to boosting conversions or growing brand loyalty? The answer is pure Psych 101. Our brains are hardwired to identify and apply meaning to patterns all around us — every time we hear a story, we unconsciously look for patterns we can relate to.

Long ago, this survival mechanism helped our ancestors avoid chowing down on poisonous berries.

Today, it helps people create content that makes brands feel irresistibly relatable and authentic.

The trick is sharing the right story and tying it to your CTA.

“That creates a sense of understanding, it creates meaning, it creates a sense of connection, which is what we’re really talking about in the end,” Amy says. “Whether we’re talking about just getting along with people or creating a good life or we’re talking about sales, at the end of the day we want authentic connection.”

In this conversation, we dive into why the right story is your most powerful tool... and why you should be having a LOT more fun with your emails!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Legit strategies and guidelines for using stories to create connections with your ideal clients and build strong brand loyalty
  • Why you should focus on managing energy rather than time — especially when working in a creative field
  • How Amy integrates her creative passions into her work

“The seller doesn’t really have the power… the buyer now has all the power.”

— Julie Gohring

When I say “salesperson,” what pops into your head? Was it a stereotypical slimy car salesman? Was it a pushy timeshare agent?

When it comes to those “Most Trusted Professions” lists, salespeople generally tend to fall at the bottom — and that can be blamed on the old paradigm for selling. This sales style can be seen in movies like National Lampoon’s Vacation: pushy, aggressive, and often kinda sleazy!

In a post-Covid world, people definitely crave more meaning and connection — and that translates into wanting to buy from people that they trust and relate to. They also have access to a ton of information at their fingertips, so they’re a LOT better informed than customers 20 years ago.

It’s definitely time for a mindset shift around sales!

Feminine leadership and sales coach Julie Gohring teaches the new paradigm for selling, one built on connection and inclusion rather than fear and lack.

“Selling is really an exchange between two people. That’s all it is,” Julie says. “To sell means to give… I always connected selling to a chance to connect with someone — a chance to get to know someone and be curious about what they’re like. And also maybe be able to help them get something that they want.”

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What feminine, connection-oriented selling looks like in practice (with real-life examples)
  • The #1 skill that leads to more conversions and higher revenue
  • The main role that you should be playing in your sales conversations

If you think that you’ll be able to scale your biz effectively without a team, then you really need to listen to this episode of Captivate + Convert!

It’s true that most entrepreneurs launch without even having a partner, let alone a team. In those early days of building your empire, you get used to wearing all the hats, taking on all of the responsibility… and having all of the control.

But here’s the thing about solopreneurship — as your biz grows and you take on more tasks and longer hours, you’re inevitably going to burn out. And you will NOT be providing your greatest, zone-of-genius value!

So, how do you take the first steps toward building out your dream team?

My guest today is Emily Milling, head honcho of the fabulous podcast production agency The Ultimate Creative.

Over the last year and a half, Emily transformed The Ultimate Creative from a one-woman show to a thriving ensemble, bringing on a copywriter, a podcast editor, and an online business manager to help her shift from an 80-hour work week to an 80-hour work MONTH.

In this convo, she spills the good, the bad, and the rad of her hiring process — and how she built a team that she loves!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How to know when it’s time to build a team — and where to start when hiring
  • Why you need to let go of the idea of total control in your business in order to scale successfully

“What people do find is that they find themselves… who they are and how they show up.”

— Kathleen Oh

We’re raised to believe that happiness is like an equation — if you achieve X, Y, and Z, you’re going to live happily ever after.

But if you’re living in the real world, you already know that it doesn’t work that way.

Integration coach, breathwork facilitator, and psychedelic guide Kathleen has worked with financially thriving six- and seven-figure entrepreneurs — people who seem from the outside to have their sh*t together.

But as Kathleen says, having the car, the house, and the investments doesn’t mean that they’re happy or feel connected to their inner truths — or even their own authentic wants and needs.

“I think what microdosing does is really turns it around and acts as a mirror,” Kathleen says. “Those things that you want, you can be and become and create from the inside out.”

This is the second of a two-part interview series. In Part 1, we talked about Kathleen’s background, how microdosing actually works, and the political history of psychedelics. In this episode, we dig into the juicy outcomes Kathleen’s entrepreneur clients experience — and why we need to rethink what “success” means to us.

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why so many people become disillusioned after reaching a level of “success”
  • The outcomes that entrepreneurs like Tarzan Kay have reported after working with Kathleen
  • Why having fewer choices might actually be more satisfying than having many

“With psilocybin slowing down the thought to allow for the feeling, it gives more choice around the action.”

— Kathleen Oh

This episode of Captivate + Convert is going to take you on a journey.

Or should I say “trip?”

My guest is Kathleen Oh, an integration coach, breathwork facilitator, and psychedelic guide.

Full disclosure: I’ve been working with her for a while now and she is PHENOMENAL at what she does!

And part of what she does is help her clients unpack their limiting beliefs, connect with their inner landscape, and develop greater clarity... through microdosing psilocybin mushrooms.

“What psilocybin does is it works on receptors in the brain that are the emotional receptors, the serotonin receptors, similar to what an antidepressant is,” Kathleen explains. “But an antidepressant is actually capping those receptors so that the emotion doesn’t become too out of unbalance. What psilocybin is doing is pushing into new space, new thought, and new experience.”

Why am I talking about microdosing on a podcast about entrepreneurship? Because when it comes to the stressful reality of running your own business, conversations about self care, mental health, and emotional wellbeing are just as legit as conversations about social selling and marketing strategy.

So hop into the episode, keep an open mind, and get ready to learn everything you ever wanted to know about magic mushrooms!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The lowdown on microdosing and how it can be used for mental and emotional wellness

What IS a signature framework?? And should you create one for your own business?

My guest for this episode, brand voice strategist Tiffany Ingle, is here to spill the beans on exactly what a signature framework is, how to develop a sellable one, and why building an aligned framework will set you and your offers apart from your competition.

Sounds great, right? But there’s more — creating your signature framework will actually simplify EVERYTHING about your brand strategy, from marketing to offer creation!

“When you’re thinking about creating a framework, you first want to consider what you’re doing right now,” Tiffany says. “Think about what’s working for you internally, and then figure out what’s working well for your existing clients. Get on the phone with them — find out what parts of the process are really resonating with them.”

In this episode, Tiffany shares how to build a framework, when to roll it out, and whether you should share it publicly!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What it means to create a “framework” in your business — and why a good framework will become the spine of your brand
  • The importance of being flexible and treating your framework as a living thing
  • Whether you should focus on process or outcomes when it comes to your framework

“Your FAQ is going to arm you with talking points. It establishes a foundation of who you are, how you work, what your expectations are, and what people’s expectations of you should be.”

— Cathlyn Melvin

How much time do you spend thinking about your FAQs? Or, how about this: do you even have an FAQ section on your website?

After my interview with copywriter and editor Cathlyn Melvin, I will be adding one ASAP!

For many of us, FAQs are a totally overlooked element of our websites. But when handled correctly, your FAQs can become a secret weapon that will vet your prospects BEFORE your discovery calls and help you manage challenging client interactions with ease!

I bet that got your attention!

FAQs used to be a simple way to get ahead of customer service questions, but they’ve begun to take on new roles. “Recently, it’s switched to being really sales-focused, where we’re getting ahead of objections and we’re increasing the Know, Like, and Trust before people get on the call with us,” Cathlyn says. They can also be used to shape the provider-client relationship!

Cathlyn uses her FAQs to give potential clients the opportunity to understand her process, services, and working relationships right off the bat, so that prospects that aren’t a good fit can opt out of booking a call — and prospects that ARE can get even more excited about working with her!

By outlining who you are, how you work and how you expect to be treated BEFORE your discovery calls, you set up the foundation for your biz relationships on YOUR terms.

And that is priceless!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The types of things that you should really consider including in your FAQs
  • How FAQs differ from and overlap with contracts
  • Where you should be referencing your FAQs when engaging with prospects (hint: not just on your FAQ page!)

This episode takes an honest look at everything you need to know about launching your digital program — from pricing to saturation to marketing.

Today's episode is a little different...

When I started sharing that I was working with someone to heal some of the hormonal and metabolic issues I'd been struggling with (and my results) I got a lot of questions about what I was doing, how it worked, and why.

So, I thought, what better way to address all the questions than to dedicate an entire podcast episode to the subject? And of course, I had to interview the woman who's helping to change my life and my health!

As it turned out, we had so much to talk about, I ended up dedicating TWO entire podcast
episodes to the subject!

Last week's episode was all about Meghann's own incredible 'behind the business' story of healing from food and exercise addiction, recovering from a traumatic brain injury that ended her career, and how she became a health coach.

If you haven't listened to Part One, seriously - go back! It's an unbelievable journey she's been on!

In today's episode (Part Two) we're talking about how my life has changed since I cut out sugar and switched to a high-fat, low-carb diet.

I'm sharing my personal experience, what it's like to work with Meghann and complete her program, and of course, my results (so far.)

We also dive into some common FAQs around keto and specific questions people asked me on Instagram, like:

✓ What the ketogenic lifestyle is and isn’t — and who can get the most benefits from a low-carb, high-fat diet
✓ What it means to deal with Leaky Gut Syndrome, what it can lead to, and how to treat it
✓ The huge role that mindset and accountability play in successfully reaching your health goals

“I’m in the clear now. I’m feeling like a human and I’m ready to take on the world.”

— Meghann Hempel

Certified health and lifestyle coach and personal trainer Meghann Hempel has the kind of inspiring ‘behind the business’ story that could be turned into a bestselling book.

And we’re going to explore it all on the Captivate + Convert podcast!

Prior to changing the lives of her clients (including me!), Meghann dealt with her own unhealthy relationship to food — which started at the age of just nine years old, when she was prescribed psychiatric medications which led to major weight gain, increased appetite, and food obsessions.

At 16, she became a fitness addict, binging on food and then over-exercising.

It wasn’t until she weaned herself off of her prescription meds that she was able to find the clarity and energy to start building her career….

… and that’s when her eating disorder got truly serious.

This episode is the first of a two-part interview with Meghann. This chapter explores Meghann’s journey from overmedicated child to zombified young mom to healed healer. From rock-bottom bulimia to traumatic brain injury, Meghann has overcome some serious challenges — tune in now to hear her incredible story!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How prescription meds affected Meghann’s lifestyle and eating habits — and how long it took her to recover
  • How a traumatic brain injury forced Meghann to shift her career path

“Words on the page really don’t mean anything and they won't convert if there’s no purpose or strategy behind it.”

— Ash Chow

This episode is dedicated to biz owners going through a launch or looking to launch in the near future! My guest, Ash Chow, is sharing her secret sauce on making your launch an epic success… before your offer even goes live. Yup, you heard me.

Ash is a launch strategist and copywriter who works with course creators and online entrepreneurs, and specializes in setting her clients up for success before their cart opens.

Ash believes that the pre-launch runway is just as vital to your sales as your actual launch, and her clients have the revenue numbers to prove it.

“What we’re really doing in the pre-launch stage is identifying what beliefs your prospects hold about your industry or your topic, and then slowly reframing those beliefs or tackling those objections or shifting your mindset towards a place where they will see the value of the offer,” Ash explains.

This conversation digs DEEP into the ways that pre-launch content varies from launch content and why it’s so important to create both — trust me, you’ll want to take some notes.

“Part of the strategy behind great copywriting is to get the messaging down.”

— Christy Cegelski

Another short and sweet solo episode for you today! This one is inspired by some conversations I’ve been having lately with newbie copywriters and content creators on Facebook.

It all comes down to this: there are a lot of people out there who don’t really understand the difference between content marketing and copywriting.

Full disclosure: I also didn’t know the difference when I started out.

Like so many other copywriters, I was writing a little bit of everything when I started out. It took me a while before I was able to start dividing up my work into these separate categories.

But knowing the differences between the two types of writing is a great first step in figuring out your niche — and then OWNING it.

Once you know where your strengths and weaknesses lie, you’ll know which projects to take on, which to avoid, and which to outsource.

In this episode, I break down the purpose and strategy behind each type of writing — and reveal why they tend to be priced differently.

Let’s dive in!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

✔ What types of writing are considered content marketing — and how they’re used to support sales

✔ How to use copywriting strategically in order to effectively drive action

✔ The reasoning behind the difference in pricing between content marketing and copywriting

People love taking quizzes. It’s why savvy biz owners use them as part of their marketing strategy — and why you should, too.

This episode’s guest, Christen Schneider, is a legit authority on using quizzes for list-building and lead gen.

Why are quizzes one of the most effective ways to build your list? As lead magnets, they definitely take more work to get through than the typical PDF download — but they’re also a LOT more engaging.

“People like instant gratification and they like self-centered stuff,” Christen says. “We like to talk about ourselves. We like people to help us, specifically, and we like to think that it’s gonna be quick… the quiz doesn’t solve the problem for them, but it’s something they can look at right away.”

Basically, quizzes are a high-converting lead magnet for broader-based audiences that ALSO offers the opportunity for segmentation (and that means more powerful follow-ups)!

But you can’t just throw together any old quiz. Want to create a high-impact quiz that grabs your audience’s interest and asks just the right questions? Christen breaks it all down and keeps it super simple and super practical in this episode (and yes, she DOES dive into the tech side of things). Let’s get started!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

What micro-commitments are — and how you can build them into your marketing strategy.

How to come up with a quiz topic aligned with your offer.

How to create personalized automated follow-ups that help lead to next steps.

“If you feel pulled towards something and you can’t stop thinking about it, there’s a reason.”

— Christy Cegelski

Are you pressing pause on the thing you REALLY want to do because you're afraid that A) It's already been done and B) You have nothing new to offer?

The truth is, there's plenty of room at the table for you and it's 100% possible to get paid to do what only YOU can do -- even in a wildly competitive online market.

And in this solo episode, I share the top five things you can do to boost your fame factor and stake your claim.

But before you hit play, you might want to grab a pen and paper — I think you’ll want to take some notes!

A lot of would-be entrepreneurs and side hustlers out there hold back from pursuing what they truly feel called to do because they're afraid the market is "too saturated" and they don't know how to set themselves apart (or if that's even possible.)

Here’s the thing — in the online space, EVERY market is saturated.

But that doesn't have to stop you from becoming successful.

Nobody is able to do what you do exactly the way you do it.

And being one of many in your field actually offers you a unique opportunity to showcase what makes YOU different and sets your process and offers apart.

Which BTW, is what will resonate with those dream clients of yours...

If you're ready to get all Queen Bey in your niche so you can render the competition irrelevant?

“A lot of people focus on just being on page one… but you also have to rank for the right phrases”

— Per Andreasen

Want to take your SEO to OMG?

My guest Per Andreasen used his mad SEO skills to rank in the TOP 5 on Google search for fitness copywriters.

Per is an expert in using SEO to attract the right audience and gain legit exposure. This is a subject I knew nothing about before sitting down to chat with him, and let me tell you — this interview is an eyeopener!

If you want to drive more targeted traffic to your website, SEO is the way to go. It’s the practice of taking into account what people search for when you’re writing copy and coming up with your marketing strategy.

By upleveling your SEO, you can actually move your webpages up in Google search rankings, making it easier for your best-fit customers to find you (you won’t reach many of them if you don’t show up in the first five pages of results).

There are a few things you have to think about when coming up with your strategy: what keywords do your ideal clients use when searching for services similar to yours? Which keywords perform the best? How many of them should you use in your copy?

And, importantly, how do you niche down and position yourself as a leader in your space?

Yes, SEO seems intimidating and technical, but Per breaks it down into easily digestible bites. This episode is perfect for both SEO beginners and those looking to upgrade their skills.

Hit play and find a new way to work! You’ll learn:

How to use meta descriptions to convert people from seeing your search result to visiting your site

How to refresh + upgrade your older content to attract new readers

Believe it or not, there's a prerequisite to writing emails that sell...

You need to have subscribers who actually open and engage with your newsletters.

But if you happen to have a pretty big chunk of subscribers who haven’t opened your emails in the last several months, it's probably time to clean up your list.

There are a lot of legit reasons why subscribers go cold (and I share them in this episode) but as business owners, we tend to have a lot of resistance to the idea of letting them go.

I mean...it seems counterintuitive, right? Why would you want to be sending out your stuff to fewer people?

I get it, I do. But when you see how getting rid of the dead weight improves your open rates, boosts engagement, and even increases conversions - you'll be a convert for sure!

In this episode, I break down all the deets of how, why, when to scrub your list — so you can finally build a community of subscribers who actually read, open, and reply to your emails!

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Which subscribers you should be identifying for deletion — and which you want to hold onto
  • The most common reasons why your subscribers would suddenly stop opening your emails
  • The great (and immediate) benefits you get from cleaning up your list a couple of times per year

“I’ve just always had the attitude of like ‘I’ll figure it out when I get there’ and ‘why not me?’”

— Brittany McBean

What do you think life will be like when your biz hits that magical six figures?

My guest for today’s episode knows that life on the other side of six isn’t just butterflies and rainbows. So, get ready for some real talk!

Brittany McBean is a launch expert and copywriter who knows all about the growing pains of hitting six figures (or multiple six figures) in your business — let’s call it the dark side of growth.

You could say that Brittany took the fast lane to six figures. Her income in 2019 was $7,000.

Less than 12 months later, she’d made $170,000.

All without having taken a single business class.

“It’s a lot of solving things after the fact,” Brittany says. “In the past two years, I’ve had to hire, I’ve had to fire, I’ve had to have really hard conversations. I’ve had contractors who were not a good fit leave and it was not a good situation. I’ve had to fire clients who were not a good fit out of values… our family can’t afford for me to give up on this, so I just had to figure it out. There wasn’t another option.”

In this episode, Brittany breaks down her road from four figures to six, including her move from entry-level pricing to five-figure premium services and how she landed her first big-name client.

She also shares some really smart tips on how to start client (and team member) relationships off on the right foot!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The first hire Brittany made — and why she doesn’t recommend getting a VA right away
  • How to knock the socks off your prospects with killer systems and sales calls

“When we’re in the eye of our own hurricane, it doesn’t make any sense.”

— Kasey Mathews

Do you make excuses every time an opportunity comes up that aligns with what you want for yourself?

Why do we DO that?

On this episode, transformational life coach Kasey Mathews is here to talk about who is REALLY running your business — you or your unconscious beliefs.

Kasey teaches that behaviors are driven by beliefs. Your limiting beliefs and mindset heavily influence the way that you show up in your biz, without you even realizing it.

“It’s like we’ve created this incredible recipe, we’ve put all these luscious, gorgeous ingredients into it… and yet you’re putting it on a plate that was never fully washed,” Kasey says. “It’s still got sticky bits and junk on it from those beliefs that live within yourself.”

Those sticky beliefs can include thoughts like “I’m not good enough,” “I don’t have enough experience,” or “No one is going to want what I have to offer.”

At some point or another, we all wind up feeling like we’re stuck in place. We seem to be doing everything right on the surface, but can’t seem to get the results that we want. In this episode, you’re going to learn how to identify and heal those sticky, negative thoughts that get in the way of you running your business the way you want to.

“The types of cold pitches that I think of as ethical have only one recipient. They’re clearly crafted for that one brand or that one decision-maker, and they’re targeting a specific problem rather than pitching somebody’s self worth or abilities.”

— Bree Weber

Can you imagine getting a genuine ‘thank you’ for sending out a cold pitch?

Bree Weber teaches others how to write pitches people actually appreciate.

Her secret? Ethical cold pitching.

“I generally think of cold pitching in two camps: traditional cold pitching, which we all have some associations with... it’s a relatively generic template that you maybe personalize a little bit, that is meant to operate at scale,” Bree says. “When I talk about ethical cold pitching, I’m talking about not just pitching for work, but starting conversations and building relationships. When it comes from a place of connection and when it comes from a place of truly desiring to help someone, it’s a completely different experience for you, but also for the recipient of that cold pitch.”

The proof is in the numbers. After creating her ethical cold pitch framework, Bree put it to the test, using the method to try to grow her own business.

30 days later, her monthly revenue had leapt from $2k to $10k!

Did I mention her response rate is 100%??

Compare THAT to traditional cold pitching! Want to try the method yourself?

“Creating a basic email marketing funnel for them allowed them to bring in more leads on a consistent basis and automate the sales process.”

— Christy Cegelski

For my first year in business, give or take, I worked on all kinds of projects.

And I mean ALL kinds: I wrote blog posts, came up with social media captions, developed course scripts, created newsletters… you name it, I wrote it. I ran the whole gamut.

This was great for learning about what I liked or didn’t like, but not so great for establishing a niche.

I decided to focus on email marketing as one of my main services, because I was working on a lot of email campaigns and my clients were seeing some really great results — their open rates were doubling (or tripling!) and they were booking more discovery calls than ever.

This definitely got me interested in figuring out how to optimize the lead gen cycle and sales process.

I wanted to make it easier for them to bring in more leads and clients (and cement myself in their minds as a copywriter/consultant extraordinaire!).

The first challenge: helping them earn a more consistent and predictable income, rather than riding what I call the “revenue rollercoaster.”

The secret? Niching down into three specific services that move their prospects through the sales funnel, start to finish.

(And I’ll give you a hint — social media is NOT one of those services!)

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The three main services I offer to help clients secure a more reliable stream of income
  • The practical drawbacks of the massive drop in Facebook’s organic reach — and the latest statistic on how many people ACTUALLY see your posts

How is your LinkedIn game?

The site is a great place for freelancers and service providers to hang out, because it’s where business people network.

But it can be hard to figure out how to harness its power to connect with the prospects of your dreams. (To be honest, I struggle with it too!).

That’s why I asked technical copywriter and LinkedIn expert Aly Goulet to come on the podcast.

“It’s very different from Instagram or Twitter, where people are there to talk about their life and be casual. All of that’s good and great, and lots of people get clients there, too, but on LinkedIn specifically, people want to talk about their career and they want to know what’s going on in their industry,” Aly explains. “They’re open to connecting with service providers, freelancers, other people that can add value in their space.”

The catch: LinkedIn was initially designed to connect people who had already worked with each other. This has changed, but people still tend to be a little suspicious about accepting cold connection requests.

That makes first impressions and choosing the right connections absolutely key!

This episode covers how to find prospects, when to pitch them, and whether joining LinkedIn groups is worth the trouble!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Top LinkedIn profile tips for attracting your target audience & growing your network
  • Which biz owners tend to hang out on LinkedIn & how to best connect
  • How to interact effectively & demonstrate your value upfront

“It wasn’t just a passion project where we were only doing a podcast and that was it. We just didn’t know what else it was going to become.”
— Rob Marsh

The magic that can grow from a simple podcast is astonishing.

Kira Hug & Rob Marsh are co-founders of The Copywriter Club (TCC), which offers memberships, courses, masterminds to copywriters looking to level up their skills.

They met at a mastermind (not Tinder, as rumor would have it) and instantly clicked. When Rob wanted to start a podcast, Kira was a natural choice for co-host.

The Copywriter Club podcast was born… but didn’t stop there.

“We didn’t have a map or a blueprint of how we were going to build everything out and what type of products,” Kira says. “I think we both were open, and knew that it would go to maybe courses. But I don’t think we knew a membership was going to come out of it, or mastermind groups were going to come out of it.”

Now, Rob and Kira split the responsibilities of running TTC as dual CEOs with a 50/50% partnership… while also running their own solo copywriting brands!

In this episode, we find out how the two decide which brand a new idea belongs under, how they deal with community members that aren’t a good fit, and which of them the true diva!

Hit play and find a new way to work! You’ll learn:
What goes into taking a new business idea from conception to fruition

In addition to just sounding cool, the method has helped her produce six-figure launches and 200% sales increases for her clients!

No, Nic isn’t a private eye. But she did learn both this skill and her awesome talent for crafting story-centric copy through her 6 years of work as a journalist.

....and discovered that there is a ton of crossover between journalism and copywriting.

“You can have all the strategies in the world from the top online business gurus, but if you’re struggling some way — physically, mentally, spiritually — you’re not going to be able to do what you came here to do. At least, not effectively.”

— Christy Cegelski

This isn’t a regular episode of Captivate + Convert— you’ll be getting one of those next week, don’t worry!

This episode is a little bit different (and a whole lot shorter)...

No guest interview this time. Instead, I want to give you a quick rundown of what’s been going on behind the scenes — and how it’s impacting the direction of the podcast.

If you’ve been listening since the beginning (thank you!), you’ve probably noticed that I’ve been inviting a wide range of guests on the show.

There's still plenty of masterclass-style episodes where I give you tips and strategies about things like copywriting and marketing...

And of course, there are interviews with guests who come on and share their expertise in things like branding and biz strategy.

And that won't change.

But as I've become more interested in things like leveraging my feminine energy, leaning into my intuition, human design, and overall well-being, I decided I wanted to host discussions on those topics as well.

And I realize if you've been tuning in for straight-up marketing advice and biz strategy, you may have been wondering why I'm talking about this stuff...

Or what it has to do with captivating your audience and converting them to clients.

The long-ish answer is this: my mission has always been to help women grow and scale their businesses --

But lately, it's become equally important for me to share the tools to do that in a much more sustainable way.

I want to help change the narrative that glorifies hustle culture and leads to burnout.

I want every single woman running a business to know it's 100% possible to become wildly successful without struggling, forcing, and grinding your way to the top.

The even longer answer? You’ll have to hit play to find out!

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The reasons behind the interview choices I’ve been making for the podcast
  • Why this new holistic approach to content will help you become a better businessperson
  • What to look forward to from Captivate + Convert over the next couple of weeks

Highlights:‌ ‌

  • 00:49 What’s been going on behind-the-scenes
  • 01:17 Guest interviews
  • 02:39 My mission
  • 03:37 Holistic approach

“Times of giving myself a break really just open up the space for creativity.” — Christy Cegelski

When it comes to launching a business, approach is everything.

My guest, Kaley Sparling, knows that all too well. Kaley owns two online retail businesses, Hair Love and Gem + Love, and her radically different launch experiences demonstrate how changing your approach and mindset transforms the way your business comes together.

While launching Hair Love, Kaley took a very by-the-book approach. She fought against what her soul and body needed and did what she thought she was SUPPOSED to do at every stage.

And she was completely miserable.

Between launching Hair Love and launching Gem + Love, Kaley became interested in Human Design, crystals, and different modalities for spiritual healing.

When launching Gem + Love, Kaley worked in ways that honored her Human Design type and built in periods of rest and creativity. The launch felt effortless because it was done in alignment with Kaley’s needs and the way she naturally works best.

In addition to Human Design, Kaley has also been working at honoring her feminine energy. As business owners in a masculine society, we’re taught to use masculine biz-building strategies — which is why the hard sell, hustle, no-sleep culture has become so popular. When you operate from more of a feminine energy perspective and use feminine strategies, things flow and become more fun and effortless!

Hit play and find a new way to work! In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The drawbacks of the masculine, hustle approach to business and how tapping into your feminine energy can actually make it easier
  • How to incorporate your spirituality or human design into the ways that you run your business
  • The vital importance of delegating tasks as your business starts to grow and scale

“A lot of people believe that a personal brand is what your website looks like or the style of email that you send. But that is really just the tip of the iceberg.”

— Tamara Glick

What goes into your personal brand — and why does it matter?

My guest Tamara Glick is exactly the person to answer these questions!

Tamara is a brilliant image consultant who helps highly visible leaders represent their personal brand on stage, on video, in meetings, and in photos with confidence.

Your personal brand is much more than just your website design or email copy. “Your personal brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room,” Tamara explains. “Your personal brand is every interaction that a prospect has with you, whether that is in a photo, or on video, or in a message, or on a stage.”

Styling, image, and how you show up can be very powerful, strategic personal branding. When you’re in front of clients or prospects, it’s important to consider how well you’re conveying who you are and what you’re capable of.

Are you a hotshot copywriter with a brilliant knack for building authentic connections and a weakness for Doritos? Are you a modern web designer with the heart of an artist? Are you a soulful shop curator who is all about being intentional and eco-friendly?

How well are you conveying those things to those meeting you for the first time? Or even to those you’re already working with?

If you help people form opinions about you that are in alignment with who you are and what your mission is, you’ll be able to build deeper, more authentic connections!

In this episode, you’ll find out:

  • How to develop and refine your own personal brand — and exactly why it is SO important
  • Amazing tips for showing up and standing out on video like a total boss
  • How to show up authentically in the work-from-home age (yes, yoga pants & all)

“The data shows that 93% of people say online reviews impact their buying decisions.”

— Licia Morelli

Okay, be honest…what’s the first thing you do before you sign on the dotted line to work with a new coach or whip out your credit card to buy that mascara you’ve been eyeing?

If you’re like the vast majority of us, you probably read every review and testimonial you can get your hands on.

Social proof has the potential to make or break a sale — that’s why sites like TripAdvisor, Yelp, Consumer Reports, or MakeupAlley are so popular.

Bad news if you’re getting negative reviews. But great news if your customers are singing your praises!

My guest for this episode, copywriter Licia Morelli, calls testimonials one of the most important pieces of impact for buying decisions. Prospects want to know who you are, how you do business, whether your offer is valuable to them and what they can expect from a customer experience perspective.

Knowing how to leverage testimonials makes it much easier to sign new clients or sell more products. Plus, you can use the language and specific details found in your testimonials to craft more resonant copy that will attract even more of your ideal customers!

So, how do you get killer testimonials from satisfied customers?

Here’s the big secret: if your clients are happy with the work, they’ll be thrilled to give you a glowing recommendation — you just need to ask!

Do you have a solid customer relationship? Have you met their needs? Were they excited about the work? If you’ve built a great relationship, then go ahead and request that they put it in writing!

Many clients don’t really know where to start when it comes to writing a testimonial — so Licia put together a brilliant template for listeners of the Captivate + Convert podcast, designed to help your clients list out all the reasons why people should work with you!

Hit play to discover:

  • How and when to approach customers to get that red-hot testimonial (or referral!) that’ll help you close more sales
  • The legal do’s and don’ts of sharing testimonials — and how to avoid getting fined by the Federal Trade Commission
  • A bonus testimonial template that makes getting that killer review a total breeze

“Local business to online business marketing is like night and day.” — Ashley Monk

Is your business pandemic-proof?

This week’s guest, Ashley Monk is the CEO of It Media, a boutique digital marketing agency, and she helped dozens of clients move at least part of their businesses online in 2020. Using Ashley’s strategies, her clients have created exciting new offers that boosted their revenue during a time when most businesses struggled to stay afloat.

In fact, they’ve generated more monthly revenue during the pandemic than they had in previous years!

So, what goes into an online glow-up??

Ashley believes all businesses can move at least part of their offerings or processes online - they may just need to get creative and do things a little differently.

For businesses just dipping their toes into the online waters, Ashley recommends starting with small changes and adding new ways to sell, like letting customers pre-order online ahead of time and offering curbside pickup.

When it comes to developing bold new offers, Ashley says, “some local businesses will have to think a little bit more outside-of-the-box.” You need to figure out what people want, even if you already have a successful brand.

You also need to figure out what you want to offer — what lights you up? What’s your zone of genius? Are there people that you’re serving right now that want that from you?

Psst! Here’s a bonus tip from Ashley: your new offer doesn’t even have to be ready in order to start getting paid — you can pre-sell and create the final touches based on the feedback from clients who’ve already bought it!

Want more hot tips? Tune into the episode and you’ll learn:

  • What goes into creating a bold new offer that will net you a big, swift cash injection
  • How digital marketing differs from local marketing — and the key strategies that will help you excel online
  • Why email marketing just may be your #1 secret weapon for building an incredible local fanbase for your business

This week I had the privilege of chatting with Mindset and Anxiety Coach, Kate Carter. Kate has experienced panic attacks since the age of 10, so she knows first hand how frustrating and paralyzing anxiety can be. These days she works with female entrepreneurs in her coaching practice and holds certifications in psychotherapy, counseling, NLP, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

In this episode, Kate talks about some of the ways anxiety might be affecting your ability to grow your business and shares several tips to help you release anxiety, let go of self-limiting beliefs, and boost your confidence so you can build the business of your dreams.

If you’ve ever been confused about how to use storytelling in your email copy and social media captions, this episode will give you the goods on what kind of stories will captivate your ideal clients and make them your biggest fans.

On today’s show, I sit down with one of my favorite fellow email copywriters, Brenna McGowan. We talk shop about all things copywriting, like...the biggest mistakes we see people making in their copy, why storytelling is so important when it comes to writing copy for your business, how to decide what stories to share (and why your stories are more interesting than you think they are), and how to tie your stories in with your biz topic or offer.

Harnessing The Power Of Your Emotions To Build Your BizWith Therapist, Trained Psychic, and Life Coach, Adrian HallTraditional “wisdom” suggests that there’s no place for sensitivity in business, but what if you could actually harness the power of your emotions and be more creative, more productive, and build a better business?

That’s what today’s episode is all about!

I sat down with Adrian Hall for today's show; she’s a licensed therapist, trained psychic, coach, and one heck of an interesting woman. We discussed the benefits of relying on feminine energy/strategies to grow and scale your business vs. (more typical) masculine energy/strategies.

Adrian also shares what we can learn from Crystalline Emotion, which she describes as a biotechnology that facilitates a shift in our emotional processing system from 3D to 5D -- and how “multidimensional living” can serve you as an entrepreneur.

This is a good one, friends!

In last week’s episode, you got the backstory of how I became a copywriter and what I did before I started my business (including my past failures in other endeavors.) The struggle was REAL.

In this episode, I walk you through the 5 things I did (in the exact order I did them) to go from charging $35 an hour as a copywriter, to selling $5k-$10k packages and having my first 5-figure months -- just over a year into my business.

So, pull out the notes app on your phone or (if you’re old school, like me,) grab a notebook and your favorite pen because there’s a ton of tips and takeaways you’ll get from today’s show.

I’ve never had the opportunity to share my full story before, so this episode is super personal…

From the outside, it might look like I built a successful business overnight because within about a year (14 months to be exact), I went from charging $35 an hour for my copywriting services to selling $5k-10k packages and having my first 5-figure months. But there’s a whole lot more to the story.

In this episode, I share part one of my story, which is the backstory. I go into how I became a copywriter (Spoiler Alert: it wasn’t exactly on purpose) and what I did before I started my current business...including all the stops and starts and previous business failures.

If you love a good origin story like I do, this one’s for you!

How To Avoid Burnout As You Build Your Business

With Holistic Nurse Practitioner & Health Coach Jaclyn Bacon

As women, we often take on a majority of the child care as well as the responsibilities associated with managing a household -- even as we’re hustling to build our businesses. In this episode, I chat with holistic nurse practitioner and health coach, Jaclyn Bacon about the impact chronic stress can have on your business and your personal life and how to recognize when you’re headed toward burnout.

Jaclyn stresses (no pun intended) the importance of simplicity and ease when it comes to self-care and shares some super practical tips for managing stress so you can grow your business without feeling like you’re in hustle mode 24/7.
