"The lyrical genius of the trumpet." -Chicago Tribune
A multi-instrumentalist and composer who performs on trumpet, bass and drums, Brad Goode is recognized as a unique stylist with a highly creative approach to improvisation. He has recorded on dozens of jazz albums, including 18 as a leader for the Delmark, Sunlight, SteepleChase and Origin labels. He is a dedicated educator, with many of his students enjoying successful music careers.
Brad began playing violin at age 4, switching to rock guitar at age 8. He later earned a BM degree in classical trumpet at the University of Kentucky, and an MM degree in bass at DePaul University. His trumpet teachers include Vincent DiMartino, Byron Baxter, Clark Terry, Chris Gekker and William Adam. He studied bass with Larry Gray, Donald "Rafael" Garrett, Carroll Crouch, and Eddie DeHaas.
Brad learned Jazz through the time-honored system of apprenticeship. His participation in this tradition was extensive, lasting well into his thirties. During his apprenticeship years, he toured and recorded with the bands of Von Freeman, Red Rodney, Eddie Harris, Ira Sullivan, Curtis Fuller, Jack DeJohnette, Ernie Krivda, Eddie Johnson, Rosemary Clooney, Barrett Deems and the Woody Herman Orchestra, among others.
Brad led his own combo in Chicago from 1985 until 1998, including a twelve-year stint as leader of the house band at the Green Mill. As a Cultural Ambassador for Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago, he led jazz groups on tours of Asia and the Middle East. He was named one of the most influential Chicagoans of the 1980s by the Chicago Tribune, who credited him as a “major catalyst in the revitalization of the Chicago jazz scene.”

A BRIEF HISTORY…With his formative years spent in New York City, Roberto’s musical talents were highly enriched through in-depth exposure to vast musical styles. Classical, Jazz, Latin, Funk, Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop, and Soul music became an integral part of his musical palette. Years of traveling and performing with notable artists around the world have made Roberto’s already broad repertoire one of outstanding magnitude. The combination of his innate groove, musicality, dexterity, and worldwide playing experiences make Roberto a world-class bass virtuoso, and as many will attest, with a heart as big as his 200 year old standup bass!
Years of honing live performance skills really paid off when he auditioned with Spyro Gyra. Thru 1987 and 1988 Roberto toured and recorded with Spyro Gyra, performing in over 150 concerts in the US and around the world. With Spyro Gyra he recorded “Stories Without Words”, which is to date, one of the group’s most popular albums. Touring continued for Roberto in 1990 when he joined Michael Franks on his Blue Pacific Tour-once again taking him on tour worldwide.
Westward bound. While Roberto was on tour with Michael Franks he took a leap of faith and invited Bobby Caldwell to one of the California shows with Michael, and as fate would have it, Bobby showed up and immediately asked Roberto to join his band. So in 1991, he moved to Los Angeles and started rehearsing with Bobby, To date, Roberto is playing with Bobby for an astonishing 29 year tenure!
In 1993 he took stage with Randy Crawford as her bassist, but his adept demeanor and impressive musicality led Randy to appoint him as Musical Director where he headed tours encompassing the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia for over 15+ years.

Phil Gates was born in Chicago Ill., into a family of musicians that helped form his music style, and ability. Phil began playing musical instruments at the age of eight, and listening to a wide array of music has always been his main source of inspiration. Phil has played venues from small clubs, to the U.S. Air Force’s “Tops in Blue” World Tour, which performed in sixteen countries as well as the halftime show of the NFL Superbowl.
Phil has been steady contributor to the Blues Community in Southern California. He founded the Los Angeles Blues Society, and has been a valued judge for the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN, and also at many of the Guitar Center “King of the Blues” competitions in Hollywood, CA
Phil has also performed at great venues such as B.B. King’s, Cozy’s, Biscuits and Blues San Francisco, Highway 99 Seattle, WA, The Coach House, CA, The Monterey Bay Blues Festival, The Santa Clarita Blues Festival, The Topanga Canyon Blues Festival, The Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Festival, The Blues Music Awards Blind Raccoon Showcase, The Blues Nights Gossau(Blues Festival in Gossau, Switzerland), The Rock und Blues Festival in Gams, Switzerland.
Phil Gates had the opportunity in his early years to listen and study great talent. As front of house engineer at the Caravan of Dreams Performing Arts Centre in Fort Worth, Texas, Phil worked with some of Blues and Jazz’s greatest performers to include: Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, Dizzie Gilespie, Wynton & Branford Marsalis, Kevin Eubanks, Eartha Kitt, Dianne Reeves, Bobby “Blue” Bland, and many others.
In the studio, Phil has been busy working on the follow up to the successful releases of “Phil Gates Live in the Danube Delta”, “The Twelve Rhythms”, “Phil Gates Live at The Hermosa Saloon”,“Addicted To The Blues”, and “In The Mean Time…” many of which, though not nominated, were all on the Grammy Ballot in their respective years as one of a few titles in their Category.
His session work playing guitar has included many tracks with artists such as: Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, Melba Moore, Freddie Jackson, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Deniece Williams, Jody Watley, Howard Hewett, Teddy Pendergrass, Brian McKnight, Ruben Studdard and Maurice White.
As a Producer, Co-Produced the award winning Blues record “The Blues According to Zacariah” with Zac Harmon, and recently has been a Co-Producer on a CD project with Little Richard. A resident of Southern California for several decades, Indian born musical visionary and tenured professor Samir Bodhi's multi-faceted life and career reflects the classic immigrant experience of thriving in the pursuit of his creative and academic dreams. While building his resume as an internationally recognized scientist and scholar, under his real name Samir Chatterjee, he applied his virtuosic talents as a guitarist, composer, producer and recording engineer to a multitude of projects involving legendary Indian musicians – including several for his wife, Madhumita Chatterjee, a renowned Bollywood singer.
In 2019, long before COVID-19 upended our world and sparked anxiety about the future like never before, Samir's sorrow and concern for his adopted home country inspired Samir to reach out to a cadre of top Indian based musicians and collaborators to realize his vision for Stairway To Nirvana, his debut album as a new age artist/producer under his own name. Fusing Eastern (Indian) classical music and instruments with modern Western music, Bodhi and his ensemble create a melodically, rhythmically and harmonically transcendent album that offers a musical roadmap to peace in these troubled times.
"I conceived of this album around June last year," says Samir. "I'm a naturalized citizen and love America, and was dismayed at the anti-immigrant rhetoric that had become part of our political discourse. I was sad to see a world full of racism, hatred, bigotry and misogyny. We were all witnessing a world where the politics of hate based on race or color, and narcissism, had become rampant. More than ever before, the world needed peace, and I've found after many years as a composer and producer, that music is the way to impart this and connect people beyond their many differences."
"My initial vision was to compose and produce tracks that would create a journey full of the peace, harmony and tranquility on towards the notion of transcending beyond this life into Nirvana," he adds. "I could never imagine that 2020 would be a pandemic year which would so intensely highlight the need for peace and force us to reflect on our life values. The timing now couldn't be more perfect to release Stairway to Nirvana. We believe that we are all the same, one humanity under God, and we sincerely hope that through this music we can bring peace and harmony to our planet and its citizens on every continent."

Kiki Valera's personal story is one that has every interesting element in it. The son of a Cuban music teacher with a musical family, Kiki began world touring at an early age with his dad's ensemble. His family recorded and became Cuba's official musical ambassadors to the world in 1982. As a young musician, Kiki listened intently to the cassettes of Wes Montgomery and others which had to be smuggled into Cuba in those early days of his musical life. Kiki decided to play the CUATRO after mastering other foundational Cuban folk instruments and also attending college as an electrical engineering student.
Kiki's new album began when he came to the US in 2013 and contacted his childhood friend and collaborator Coco Freeman, a vocalist."Vivencias en Clave Cubana" is Kiki's Grammy submitted solo project for consideration in the Tropical Latin Category for the 2020 Grammy Awards.

With the March 20, 2020 release of debut album "Unraveled" on Outside In Music, Johnson steps out with her first album under her own name. Produced by bassist Steve Rodby of the Pat Metheny Group, it’s an arrestingly beautiful project by an extravagantly creative artist fully in control of her craft as an improviser, arranger, composer and bandleader. Rather than trying to make a splash with an ad-hoc cast of veteran all-stars, Johnson bided her time to record with the stellar musicians who’ve accompanied her on a years-long journey. She arranged all the pieces, but fully credits her bandmates, who first came together in 2014, with shaping the music over the course of dozens of gigs, particularly regular performances at the lamented Cornelia Street Café.
“I’ve been wanting to record for a while, and it took me time to really live with the music,” Johnson says. “It took me years to feel comfortable recording my stuff but we honed these pieces on stage and I’m so happy with how it turned out.”
Possessing a luminous, elastically crystalline soprano, she’s joined by a sterling band built on a highly responsive rhythm section with pianist Chris Ziemba, drummer Jeremy Noller, and bassist Matt Aronoff (who gained particularly relevant experience touring with Luciana Souza). Adding
striking orchestral textures are violinist Tomoko Omura and Michael Sachs on bass clarinet and alto sax. The great Brazilian jazz musician Vitor Gonçalves adds masterly accordion work on two tracks.
The album opens with the gorgeous Johnson-arranged jazz/pop
excursion “No More ‘I Love You's’,” a hit for Annie Lennox originally written and recorded by the 1980s English duo The Lover Speaks (aka David Freeman and Joseph Hughes). Johnson accentuates the dreamy vibe with a gossamer setting, her voice gliding over Sachs’ woody bass clarinet counterlines.
Johnson includes two songs by her colleagues, but the album serves most significantly as a showcase for her impressive songwriting. The heart- bearing ballad “Love Again” revels in vulnerability, with a melody that rises as the emotional stakes get higher. Set to a seductively slinky groove played with precision by Noller, the title track combines a spritely, dancing melody with a devastating portrait of depression. The languorous “Lie In Wait” captures the nagging inner monologue inspired by prolonged separation in a relationship, and “These Days” is her captivating, art song setting for a verse by her brother, the poet Gentry Johnson.
The two songs contributed by her bandmates offer a glimpse into the deep pool of talent in which she’s delving. Michael Sachs composed and arranged the sumptuously detailed pop jazz song “Happy to Stay,” an exquisite melody buoyed by Tomoko Omura’s insistent pizzicato pulse. Omura, knowing Johnson’s affinity for Brazilian music, composed and arranged the unusual samba “Voice Is Magic” for Johnson, adding the additional challenge of a lyric in Japanese.
For sheer, breathtaking beauty, it’s hard to surpass pianist Jimmy Rowles’ “The Peacocks,” a tune also known as “A Timeless Place” after vocalist Norma Winstone added her lyrics. Rarely sung until recently, the song requires tremendous poise, control and range, and Johnson makes the piece her own. Her abiding passion for the treasure-laden Brazilian songbook adds another jolt of creative energy to the album’s concluding tracks. She renders Jobim’s bossa nova standard “Dindi” in Portuguese with just the right sense of saudade (or wistful longing), while taking some liberties with the melody the second time around.
