Today we're being curious about body image and weight loss and neurodivergence and how these things intersect and affect each other!

Note: I'm not speaking from any kind of academic or research-based perspective. This is all just my lived experience and what I am currently going through.

P.S. If this isn't the kind of thing you're super comfortable listening to or if this is going to be triggering for you, I really encourage you to just skip this episode. However, I do want to be clear, I will not be using any numbers of any kind. Instead, I'm mostly going to be talking about the emotions that go into making any kind of big lifestyle change and the pushback I'm experiencing from my brain and the executive dysfunction.

Today we’re talking all things friendship…because it turns out I'm not as good at it as I thought I was. I discuss:

✨ how I used to think “I couldn't be autistic because I have friends and I'm in a very stable marriage”

✨ how I’ve had sort of an epiphany recently that I have very few friends that I've kept for more than a year maximum

✨ autistic traits that may contribute to my friendship struggles

✨ platonic love

Today we’re talking about auDHD & workaholism! As an autistic ADHDer myself, I work a lot and not only do I work a lot, I love to work. This is not all bad, but it's definitely not all good either. Let’s dig into both sides of this, why this happens, and how we can find some balance when it feels like our brains aren’t really wired for balance.

Today we’re talking to…my husband! A lot of you have asked how our relationship works with me being neurodivergent and him not being neurodivergent…so I figured who better to ask than him.

We discuss:

  • how he feels about some of my ADHD traits and symptoms, like the inability to accurately perceive time, and impulsivity

  • how our concept of self differs

  • and how the quote “you miss the forest for the trees” is an interesting metaphor for how our perspectives on details and the big picture differ

Today we’re talking with Adrina and Marissa, the co-founders of Black Girl ADHD. We discuss their personal experiences with ADHD, including their journey to diagnosis, how understanding themselves on a deeper level has improved their lives, and the stigma and lack of awareness about ADHD, especially in the black community. They emphasize the importance of seeking answers - not to make excuses, but to build on your toolbox of just surviving and not only surviving but thriving through your diagnosis, understanding that there is nothing wrong with having ADHD, and using it as a superpower.

Today we’re talking with Kelsey Silver, founder and CEO of The Neurospicy CEO, about decision fatigue. Decision fatigue is when your environment has created a space where every decision takes so much energy out of you that you no longer have the energy to make that next decision. (Like, what’s for dinner?) Kelsey and I talk through different strategies for coping with decision fatigue, and ways to streamline your decisions. Because the more you eliminate decisions in your life, the more space and spoons you will have for the decisions that not only matter, but also feed you, and get you excited.

We dive into what sort of things a VA can help with, how disorganization (a sign of ADHD) influenced when and how I hired a VA, what's the most frustrating part of working for someone with ADHD, and what's the most surprising part of working for someone with ADHD.

I also wanted to use this as an opportunity to remind people that autism is a spectrum and what the word spectrum means. Whether or not you feel that you fit a stereotype, you can still be autistic. 💙

Today we’re talking to Kaitlyn Signorelli of Confidently ADHD & Kaitlyn Signorelli Coaching to talk about ADHD and the menstrual cycle. We begin our talk discussing Kaitlyn’s experience with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and later, how they’ve learned to make accommodations in their life to cope with the ways the menstrual cycle affects their ADHD symptoms. By knowing your symptoms shift as your hormones shift during your menstrual cycle, you can: (1) start to pay attention to it to see how it looks and shows up in your life, (2) you can start to take control of it, so it doesn’t feel as chaotic anymore, and (3) you can start to accept and embrace that there’s no shame in how you’re feeling - because there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with you, your brain chemistry is literally changing throughout the month.

Today we’re talking about the idea of “female autism” and the genderization of neurodivergence in general, and why I think it’s problematic and unhelpful.

Quick acknowledgment: There are many presentations of autism. This discussion is not meant to dismiss anyone’s presentation of autism or neurodivergence. This discussion is meant to provide some nuance and context for why it can be problematic and unhelpful to categorize something as female vs male when it comes to neurodivergence.

In today's episode of the podcast, I talk with Ember about their early ADHD diagnosis and how it didn't save them the way so many late-diagnosed folks imagine early diagnosis should. The truth is, there's a difference between diagnosis and acceptance. And so many late-diagnosed folks wish they'd been diagnosed earlier because they imagine it automatically comes with acceptance, but as Ember describes in this episode, that's not always the case. If you were diagnosed earlier in life and feel a bit left out by the whole late-diagnosed neurodivergent movement, this episode is for you. I hope you feel seen and heard and understood.

There's a lot of intersections between autism and various personality disorders, so today I wanted to talk about it. Let's talk about misdiagnoses, comorbidities, and how undiagnosed (and unaccepted) autism can actually lead to the development of a personality disorder. Oh, plus a fun little rant about how psychiatry wants to regulate our sex lives.

Being your true self is always hard, but when you're neurodivergent, it's often even harder. We're told, over and over, not to be ourselves. To act "normal," to stop being so "weird." Neurodivergent folks come up with all kinds of ways to hide who they really are, but at the end of the day, this only ends up hurting us. We will never be neurotypical, no matter how hard we pretend. But many of us struggle to really be ourselves after years or even decades of hiding. Do you sometimes feel like healing just isn't a possibility for you? Like somehow, you're just never going to get better? I've been there, and I know it can be a dark, heavy place. But today's episode is all about seeing the truth in the light. I have gotten so much better since those days when I thought I was beyond help, and I know if I can get better, so can you. Because I'm not special, I'm just like you. I felt broken and sad and alone for years, and I thought I was doomed to feel that way forever. But here I am, healing every single day. And I promise that's possible for you too.

Self-care is a popular topic in the world of mental health, which means there's a lot of misinformation out there. That's why I wanted to bring a self-care expert on the podcast to talk about what self-care really is, why it's important, and best of all, how to actually implement self-care in your daily life. If you're in desperate need of more consistent self-care (like me), then this episode is a must-listen.

I used to hate the advice to "ride the waves" of my emotions because it felt like my emotions weren't cute little waves, they were tidal waves and I didn't know how to ride that kind of wave. But now I realize that, no matter how big my emotions are, it never helps to fight them. Accepting my emotions (and myself) is the key to surviving those huge tidal waves. Well, that and the emotional equivalent of a surfboard.
