School Care Team
On School Care Matters, a series of eight podcasts, the School Care Team unpacks the Indiana Department of Education’s Social-Emotional Competencies. We discuss what social-emotional learning is, who it’s for, and why it’s important. We describe how to develop, model, and measure social-emotional competency. Then we take a deeper dive into each of the seven competencies: Sensory-Motor Integration, Insight, Regulation, Connection, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Mindset. We offer a definition and indicators for each competency, as well as practical tools and strategies for developing and teaching them.
Mindset encourages students to examine multiple perspectives to acquire perseverance, self-discovery, and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback. Mindset refers to the ability to demonstrate cognitive flexibility and a willingness to learn. Developing mindset is a critical learning skill for building adaptability, self-discovery, and resilience.
Critical thinking includes one’s ability to reflect on problems in context, understand causes, and engage in critical inquiry to solve problems. It refers to the ability to make constructive choices and understand metacognitive strategies to enhance learning. Critical thinking skills build responsible decision-making, analytical, and critical inquiry skills which are necessary to approach learning from an innovative, creative, multicultural, and ethical lens.

Collaboration refers to the ability to work well with others, including in the group and teamwork environment. Collaboration works to build positive communication and conflict management skills. It is about sharing power and spaces to navigate conflicts and honor the multiple perspectives and embodied experiences each person brings to the group.

Connection refers to the ability to have strong social awareness, giving students the ability to take the perspectives of others, and empathize with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Regulation refers to the ability to recognize and manage one’s emotions. Regulation skills build positive self-control, positive self-discipline, and impulse control. Updates to this competency include an emphasis on student agency and voice. Agency is about the student being the “agent” (or “person with an active role” in learning) rather than the teacher, which honors the identities, experiences, and preferences of all students.

Insight is not only essential for understanding one’s emotions, thoughts, beliefs, and values but is influenced by social systems and cultural identities. Gaining insight is an important skill for building self-confidence, self-esteem, and empathy for others. Insight helps students recognize their own strengths and areas of growth.
