At the Universities of Florida and Porto, and in close collaboration with CAE Healthcare, Willem van Meurs, PhD in control engineering, Toulouse, France (1991), designed simulators for medical student education, anesthesia, intensive care, emergency medicine, pediatrics, and labor and delivery. These and similar devices all but eliminated training of basic interventions and common critical incidents on live animals and real patients. Pedagogical conditions can be optimized without concern for patient safety. Total sales of the simulators developed by the teams Dr. van Meurs led or participated in now exceed 1 billion dollars. These simulators rely on mathematical models of cardiorespiratory physiology and pharmacology. He has a special interest in fetal and neonatal physiology. He is a past president of SESAM and the author of Modeling and Simulation in Biomedical Engineering, McGraw-Hill (2011), and of The Dolls' Engineer, a personal journey through three decades of medical simulation, SimEdita (2023). Recent work includes development of Explanatory Models in Acute Care in collaboration with the Radboud University.

After 20 years clinical work as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), my increasing interest in education and improvement led to my first full-time educator role as Simulation Specialist, and only full-time clinician, for the Trent Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre, Nottingham in 2004 with a concurrent secondment to design and deliver an Anaesthetic Assistant Course at the Nottingham School of Nursing. I served on the Board of the Association of ODP during the process to join the HCP (Health Professions Council, as was), contributing to the QAA Benchmarking and the HPC Standards of Proficiency for ODP and taking part in numerous professional Validation of ODP Programmes. 2004 I attended a 4 – Day Aviation “Crew Resource Management” Train-the-Trainer course and have been delivering Simulation & Human Factors Education ever since. I was treasurer for NAMS (National Association for Medical Simulation) before it became ASPiH (Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare) and was a member of Faculty for the NAMS/Laerdal collaboration “SimSKills” Train the Trainers Course and have contributed to several Laerdal “Simulation User Group (SUN) Meetings. I was one of two Human Factors Editors for SESAM 2014 and the European subject expert on the SSH working panel for the first Certification as Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) during two USA workshop events. I qualified as a TeamSTEPPS Master trainer in 2015.

The affidavit for my NUH Corporate “NUHonours” Award in 2011 included: “Andy’s passion for human factors and patient safety and his desire to share this knowledge with others is demonstrated every day he teaches…”
I have delivered presentations and workshops, mostly upon Simulation Faculty Development, at local, national and international conferences and was a member of the expert panel for a plenum event at SESAM (Society for Simulation in Europe) 2013. I have led pre-conference workshops for the ASPiH National Conference. I contribute to NHS E National Programmes & Training, I designed and led the MSc Simulation Pathway Lead for Canterbury Christ Church University. I presented to the Royal College of Physicians National Clinical Trainer Conference 2022. I am member of the ASPiH Executive and the Operative board of IJoHS.

Jaclyn Jeffries received her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Purdue University and completed a pharmacy residency at Purdue’s Center for Medication Safety Advancement. Jaclyn was then Medication Safety Officer for a 4-hospital system, Health-First. She earned her Consultant Pharmacist license in 2014 and became a Board Certified Professional in Patient Safety in 2018. In 2015 Jaclyn joined AdventHealth serving many roles as Clinical Pharmacist, Medication Safety Coordinator and Officer and since 2020, the Executive Director of Safety for the 50-hospital system. Quint Studer is a lifelong student of leadership. He worked for multiple health systems throughout his career, the last stop being president of Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. In 2000, he founded Studer Group, a healthcare and education coaching company that received the 2010 Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. Dr. Jabeen Fayyaz, PEM Staff Physician, serves at the Hospital for Sick Children and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, since 2018. I graduated from Pakistan and worked as Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) faculty at Aga Khan university hospital (AKUH) for five years. I was among the few leaders in Pakistan with the EM specialty recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan in 2011. Later, I worked at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) for three years and led the implementation of the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS), followed by a quality improvement initiative utilizing the LEAN Sigma methodology. 2016 I started my PEM fellowship for sick kids, followed by a one-year Simulation fellowship in 2018. I have a master’s degree in health professional education from Aga Khan University Hospital in 2018; in April 2023, I completed my Ph.D. from MGH IHP, Harvard, with my thesis" Exploring Cultural Sensitivity for Physician and Simulation Educators."
At sick kids, I am PEM international fellowship program director and Simulation resuscitation lead. I am the IPSS INSPIRE fellowship chair and BOD member for INSPIRE and IPSS. In the last three years working with National and international for community outreach and capacity building in PEM partners Indus Hospital and health network, I have implemented a simulation-based PEM curriculum for EM residents and a one-year PEM certification program with twenty-seven physicians currently enrolled from all over Pakistan using distance simulation. I am particularly interested in exploring how strong culture plays a role in Facilitator and learner interactions in simulation-based education.

Robertson is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the Direction of Innovation in Surgical Innovation in the Department of Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Beth Mancini is Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Arlington's College of Nursing and Health Innovation. Before retiring in 2019, Dr. Mancini served as the Senior Associate Dean for Education Innovation and held the Baylor Health Care System Professorship for Healthcare Research. From 2004 to 2017, she also served as Chair for the Undergraduate Nursing Programs.
Prior to moving to an academic role in 2004, Dr. Mancini served as Senior Vice President for Nursing Administration and Chief Nursing Officer at Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, Texas, a position she held for 18 years. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a nurse executive.
Dr. Mancini received an Associate Degree in Nursing from the Community College of Rhode Island, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Rhode Island College, a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from The University of Rhode Island and a PhD in Public and Urban Affairs from The University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Mancini is internationally recognized for her groundbreaking work in high quality, high volume, accelerated online education (distance education). Her work in this area resulted in UTA's College of Nursing becoming the country's largest college of nursing in a public university and led to the College of Nursing receiving the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's prestigious Star Award in 2012.
In recognition for her many contributions to the fields, Dr. Mancini was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a Fellow in the National League for Nursing's Academy of Nurse Educators, a Fellow of the American Heart Association, and as a Fellow of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. In 2013, Dr. Mancini was recognized with a Regent's Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Texas System and was appointed a Visiting Scholar in Innovation and Simulation at The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. In 2014, she was reappointed as a Visiting Scholar in Simulation and Curriculum.
Dr. Mancini is an active volunteer with numerous professional organizations. She has served as Vice Chair of the Basic Life Support Task Force for the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation and Chair of AHA’s Education Science and Programs committee. She currently serves as a member of the National Academies of Science Global Task Force on Innovations in Health Professions Education, and member of AHA’s Get with The Guidelines - Resuscitation's Clinical Work Group, and Science and Clinical Education and Lifelong Learning committee. She has served as President of the international Society for Simulation in Healthcare as well as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's Simulation Task Force and the World Health Organization's Initiative on Training, Simulation and Patient Safety.
Dr. Mancini's research interests include innovations in education, interprofessional collaborative practice, and the development of high performing healthcare teams through the use of simulation. She has received over $6.5 million in competitive grants, has more than 100 publications to her credit, and is a sought-after speaker at local, national and international conferences on topics such as innovations in online educat

Dr. Joseph O. Lopreiato MD, MPH received his MD degree from Georgetown University in 1981 and his MPH degree from the University of Texas. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD in 1984 and did fellowships in faculty development and academic pediatrics at Michigan State University and The University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio where he earned an MPH degree. He subsequently completed a 31 year career in the United States Navy Medical Corps as a pediatrician and educator. He has held several education leadership positions including pediatric clerkship director, director for educational affairs, and pediatric residency program director. He is the recipient of several national awards for education including the Academic Pediatric Association’s Ray Helfer Award for Innovation Medical Education, The American Academy of Pediatrics National Education Award, a finalist for the ACGME Parker J. Palmer Award, and the recipient of the Association of Pediatric Program Director’s Walter Tunneson Award for extraordinary or innovative contributions in pediatric graduate medical education. He has conducted consultations for pediatric training programs for the Association of Pediatric Program Directors and is a case developer for the National Board of Medical Examiners Step II clinical skills examination.
He is currently the Associate Dean for Simulation Education and Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Nursing at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He is also the medical director of the Val G. Hemming Simulation Center, a multidisciplinary learning laboratory serving students across the continuum of medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a member of the American Pediatric Society, the Association of Standardized Patient Educators and is the President of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Bio for Bryan K. Dang
Bryan is a nurse who merges his background in pediatrics, education, and human factors research to create impactful solutions to challenges faced by our nurse training pipeline. Together with his team at Syminar, Inc., Bryan is on a mission to help schools end the nursing shortage by 2029.
As a co-founder and Head of Product, Bryan has been leading Syminar’s charge in overcoming the shortage of nursing faculty and facilities for simulations and clinical rotations for nursing programs.
Most recently, Bryan and his team showed up at IMSH to launch a paid pilot for Syminar’s VR360 Live Streaming Station. This innovative system aims to help sim centers build business cases for funding and demonstrate the positive impact of psychologically immersive technologies on nursing students’ learning and performance outcomes.
Bryan's passion for healthcare education and desire to improve access to resources led him to develop this VR360 Live Streaming system while in graduate study for Product Design and Engineering. The results of his and his collaborators’ research have been published across various nursing education journals since 2018, showcasing the positive impact of VR360 videos on student engagement in simulation and lecture hall environments.
He’s excited to share his journey, Syminar’s current impact, and how he hopes to shape the future world of nursing education with our podcast audience.

Andrew Brown was born on 30 March 1976 in Portland, ME. He is married and has 5 children.
Andrew Brown enlisted in the US Air Force and became a Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) in 1994. Mr. Brown spent time all over the world during his service ranging from Anchorage Alaska as a first duty station to Landsthul Germany and ending up in Baltimore MD. Mr. Brown retired after 20 years in the US Air Force as a Master Sargent and was stationed at R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center located in Baltimore, Maryland as the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of the Air Forces CSTARS training program. As an Independent Duty Medical Technician (IDMT) MSgt Brown had multiple deployments with Special Operations Forces as well as with conventional Air Force units. Mr. Brown hold a Bachelors Degree of Science in Public Health with a homeland security concentration. In addition, Mr. Brown is near completion (9 credits) from a Masters Degree in Education and 16 credits remaining in a Masters of Science degree in Entomology. He has served as a nationally registered EMT since 1993 and a nationally registered paramedic since 2012 as well as a certified Remote Medical Practitioner (RMP) since 2010. Mr. Brown has taught various adult learning topics in medicine since 1996. Mr. Brown was employed with the U.S. State Department in the Operational Medicine Unit from Dec of 2014 until July of 2019 including teaching at multiple embassies and coverage from Mobile Security Deployment (MSD) activities. Mr. Brown is an active and current National Association of Emergency Medical Technician (NAEMT) affiliate faculty responsible for certifying training sites and instructors in Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support and Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)/Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC). As the Chief of Operations for the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Mr. Brown oversees six civilians and four military members as well as the daily operations of a simulation center with multiple accreditations.

Gilberto Vallejo or “Gil” as his friends call him, is a retired US Army First Sergeant/ Combat Medic with over 35 years’ experience as a results driven leader and trainer in Emergency Health Care, specializing in Combat Trauma Simulation and Academic Based Simulation Training. Mr. Vallejo has held several management positions as a Site Lead, Director and Program Manager overseeing multiple Medical training facilities worldwide.
Additionally, Mr. Vallejo has assisted in the development, design and operations of over 30+ Medical Simulation Training facilities, Combat Training Lanes, Medevac Helicopter Simulators and environments incorporating multiple systems and Artificial Stressors along with multiple levels of medical and Tactical Combat Casualty Care Curriculum for the most realistic training in both civilian and tactical environments.

Elizabeth is a very proud transplanted Canadian and former hockey mom. She is a graduate of Queen’s University (Arts ’89) and McMaster University (BScN ’93). She began her healthcare career as an Operating Room Nurse then transitioned to nursing education in 2003. In 2005 she was the lead on overseeing a half-million dollar grant from the province of Ontario to develop and implement a clinical simulation program in an undergraduate nursing program. In April of 2017 she was recruited to the position of Director of Simulation at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. She has transformed a forgotten simulation lab and random pieces of equipment in to a robust and thriving space in a community hospital. Her role runs the gamut from implementing deliberate practice modules for residents and medical students to incorporating simulation in staff education to enhance the patient experience to developing simulation activities for nursing education.
Elizabeth has pursued many advanced training opportunities in simulation including the Comprehensive Simulation Instructor Workshop at the Center for Medical Simulation at Harvard (2015), The Mastery Learning Course at Northwestern University (2017) and The Master Debriefer Course from The Debriefing Academy (2020). In 2016 she was in the first graduating class from the Master of Science in Medical and Healthcare Simulation at Drexel University. She is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) and facilitates on-line and in-person readiness review courses for this designation. She is currently serving her second term as Vice-Chair of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Hospital-Based Section. Elizabeth was a member of the writing teams for two of the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice - Prebriefing and Simulation Design. She has an adjunct role with the University of St. Augustine where she facilitates simulation faculty development courses across their five campuses.
She is a self-admitted “hoarder of simulation resources” and her passion is helping novices learn best practices for developing and implementing their own simulation programs.

Dr. Kerner has an extensive background in emergency care, both as an emergency nurse and paramedic. In his capacity as a registered nurse, he has held positions in busy emergency departments as staff nurse, educator and manager. In 2006, he collaborated with the Patient Safety Institute to develop the first emergency department nurse fellowship while serving as full time faculty at the Adelphi University School of Nursing. He joined PSI’s faculty as a Clinical Education Specialist in 2007 and now serves as Assistant Vice President. Dr. Kerner is particularly interested in simulation as a teaching tool to reduce preventable errors and the use of technology in the classroom. He has produced several educational videos for the Patient Safety Institute, has contributed to simulation texts and published in peer reviewed journals. He holds a Bachelors degree in nursing from Adelphi University, the Juris Doctor degree from New York Law School and the Doctor of Education degree from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Brian Levine is an innovative and accomplished Business and Technology Leader with extensive experience and global perspective in commercial and government contracting and acquisition in simulation, training and gaming with a focus on medical simulation and public safety. He holds three degrees from Stetson University – a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, and a Master’s in Business Administration.
Mr. Levine has been a contributing member and leader in the local simulation community for the past 15 years while working at SAIC, Presagis, CAE USA, and CAE Healthcare. Although he has had a prominent focus on medical simulation with the goal of improving healthcare and patient safety, Mr. Levine has a broader simulation experience in Land, Air, and Sea.
As a contributing member and leader in the simulation community, Mr. Levine has served a variety of leadership roles in such events and initiatives as the NTSA MS&T Congressional Caucus Committee on Patient Safety, Florida Simulation Summit, I/ITSEC Healthcare Track Planning Committee, Co-chair of the MODSIM Healthcare Track, Co-Founder of the Florida Alliance for Simulation in Healthcare, and speaker at such conferences as the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, I/ITSEC, MODSIM, Florida Simulation Summit, and TSIS.

Stephanie is a critical care nurse and has been practicing for the past 10 years at numerous hospitals including; Hinsdale, Memorial in South Bend, IN, Good Samaritan, Alexian Brothers, and is currently working at Stroger/Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. She is certified in CPR, ACLS, NIHSS, ATCN, and CCRN. Stephanie focuses on patient centered and family-centered care. As an ICU nurse, Stephanie has managed a diverse patient population including trauma, violent trauma, burns, neurosurgical, post-cardiothoracic surgery, stroke, post-surgical, post-arrest, and most recently acutely ill COVID-19 patients.

Tiffani has twenty-one years of nursing experience and nine years dedicated to the art of simulation. I engage students as active learners who reflect critically on what they have learned and apply it to the ongoing development of critical thinking skills. My teaching philosophy is that “as a proponent of simulation, it is my duty to help learners engage and practice nursing skills safely, so they are competent healthcare workers.” In my current role, as an associate clinical professor and simulation center coordinator at Auburn University College of nursing, I coordinate, design, and implement all simulation activities for pre-licensure nursing students. I hold the following certifications: as a critical care registered nurse (CCRN-K), as a certified healthcare simulation educator (CHSE), and as a certified healthcare simulation operations specialist (CHSOS) She is an active SSH, INACSL, ASPE, and INACSL ad-hoc diversity committee member (IncluDE). My role is pivotal in onboarding and mentoring lab RNs (nurses hired to work in the simulation and skills labs) and new faculty, training them in simulation methodologies, prebrief, and debrief. I have numerous publications and presentations on simulation-based topics up to the international level having presented at IMSH, INACSL, and ASPE.

He was also instrumental in the creation of the Practicing For Patients (PFP) program which has been distributed through the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM). The program allows for any size hospital to run obstetric emergency in-situ drills and he led the PFP implementation training for over 120 hospitals in Texas.
He is currently working both locally and across the entire CHRISTUS system to organize and implement life-saving medical simulation training programs to help improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Deering has delivered babies in 10 different States and a combat zone, was awarded the Bronze Star, holds two patents for an obstetric birthing simulator system, has over 100 publications and two TED talks about obstetric simulation, has managed over 30 million dollars in grants and external funding and his simulation videos have over 13 million views on YouTube.

Scott B. Crawford MD, FACEP, FSSH, CHSOS
Dr. Crawford is Executive Director of the Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSCEP). He is Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at TTUHSCEP. In addition to his faculty position he is also a board member for SimGHOSTS. He has presented both in the US and internationally on topics related to audio/video design, information technology, simulation operations, and medical procedural training. He has served as an author for standards of best practice in simulation and is Editor of the textbook Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Operations, Technology, and Innovative Practice.
Dr. Crawford completed his emergency medicine residency and served as Chief Resident of research and technology at TTUHSCEP in 2012. Dr. Crawford earned his M.D. from Rush University in Chicago in 2009 and a bachelor’s degree in physics from The Colorado College in 2004. He continues to search for economical and innovative design ideas to enhance the world of healthcare education by bringing a more engaging and educational experience to all learners.
Dr Elizabeth (Liz) Robison, EdD, RN, MSN, CNE, CHSE-A, is Professor Emeritus at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida, and former Simulation Center Coordinator for the ASN program, which included opening a new center and providing simulation facilitation within all levels of the ASN program. She prefers to go by Liz.. Liz has presented at several simulation based educational conferences and meetings. Her dissertation research involved learning styles and clinical judgment in a simulated clinical experience. She is currently in her second term on the INACSL Board of Directors serving in the role as Secretary/Treasurer and board liaison for the Sustainability Special Interest Groups. Additionally, she is a facilitator for their Simulation Education Program (ISEP), which is a 6-month online educational program. Liz is actively involved with the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) Task Force on Simulation since October 2020, having completed reviews of over nine products, presented at conferences related to this work, and has published regarding the work of this group, both in the OADN Journal and ACEN Bridges Newsletter. She is a member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and involved in several interest groups, presenting at their national conference through work with one of the groups. She is actively involved with the NLN as a co-chair for the NLN Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee, with prior years serving as a scholarship reviewer. She is a manuscript reviewer for Clinical Simulation in Nursing. Certifications she holds include Certified Nurse Educator with the NLN since 2008 and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator with SSH since 2018, obtaining the advanced designation in 2021. Prior to going into higher education, Liz was a member of the Air Force Nurse Corps retiring after 22 years of service in a multitude of roles in clinical areas and leadership. Matthew Charnetski, MSMS, NRP, CHSOS, CHSE is the Director of Simulation-Based Education and Research for Dartmouth Health (DH) in Lebanon, NH. His winding path took him around the world several times between Iowa, Africa, Antarctica, Kazakhstan, Arkansas, New Hampshire and almost every bit in between. Matthew’s simulation career has been largely academic focused primarily in medical education prior to arriving at DH in 2019.
He is a graduate of the Master’s in Medical and Healthcare Simulation Program at Drexel University and is actively pursuing his PhD in Health Professions Education at Maastricht University in Maastricht, Netherlands. Matthew is also adjunct faculty in the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions Master’s in Health Professions Education Program in the Simulation Operations Track.
Matthew is involved extensively with The Society for Simulation in Healthcare and The International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning. For SSH, Matthew is Chair of the Hospital-Based Simulation Programs Section and a member of the Internal Relations Committee and Chair of the Renewal Technology Subcommittee. He serves as a member of the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Task Force and serves as a Director-At-Large for the SSH Board of Directors where he is board liaison to the Education Committee. Matthew is a member of the Standards Committee for INACSL and serves as the Chair of the Operations Standard Subcommittee. He is currently acting as a co-planning chair for SimGHOSTS planning this falls S3 conference in Singapore.
His recent research interests largely focus on cultural considerations in and around healthcare simulation. His PhD work surrounds the role that culture plays in the adaptation and transfer of simulation curricula in transborder education partnerships. Matthew has contributed book chapters on simulation methodologies, moving simulation centers, and cultural considerations in simulation. His peer-reviewed work has largely been in standards of best practice in simulation, cultural considerations/diversity issues related to simulation, and as a member of the SSH 2023 Distance Simulation Summit.

Jarrod Young, MBA, BSE, CHSOS-A is the Simulation Operations Lead at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation (CHIPS). Mr. Young received his Bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2012 and his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2020. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Quality and Safety from UAB, as well as a certification from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist- Advanced (CHSOS-A).
Since his arrival in 2016, Mr. Young oversees the operations of all healthcare simulation activities within the 45,000 square foot facility at CHIPS. With a strong focus on process management, operational efficiency, and quality improvement methodologies, Mr. Young organizes the day-to-day operations of CHIPS and provides guidance to the Simulation Specialists and Simulation Technologist that make up the operations team. Starting in January 2021, Jarrod served as the Interim Co-Director of CHIPS for eighteen months. During that time, he helps steady the program through an array of major changes, all while leading CHIPS through SSH Accreditation in Teaching and Education.
Prior to his time at CHIPS, Mr. Young served as a Clinical Simulation Specialist at UAB’s Office of Interprofessional Simulation (OIPS). During his time with OIPS, Jarrod was project lead on multiple OIPS strategic priorities, including product design projects with the School of Engineering, and was responsible for training and supervising simulation specialists, simulation technicians, and work study students in OIPS. Before entering the field of healthcare simulation, he worked as a rehabilitation engineer where he specialized in rehabilitation assistive technologies, including ergonomic considerations, product design, and product modifications.
In addition to his responsibilities at CHIPS, Mr. Young volunteers in many different roles and committees within the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). He is currently a volunteer Accreditation Site Reviewer and voting member of the Accreditation Council. He also serves as the Co-Chair for the Education Workgroup within the Simulation Operations and Technology Section (SOTS). Mr. Young also served as a team member on the development of the CHSOS-A certification and currently serves as a member of the CHSOS Advisory Team. He previously served as a Planning Co-Chair for the SimOps 2021 conference in Tampa, FL and currently serves as a Planning Co-Chair for the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) 2023 in Orlando, FL.

Starting many years ago as an ER nurse, Amy Cowperthwait found her educational niche in 2006 as a simulation faculty at the University of Delaware. In 2009 she co-founded Healthcare Theatre with Theatre Faculty at the University of Delaware. The simulated participant program has grown exponentially over the years leading to the development of an approved minor at the University. Her entrepreneurial journey started in 2011 with a tracheostomy simulation gone awry. Through a new partnership with Engineering, the first wearable simulators were developed and patented. Amy’s mission to include Simulated Participants in every possible simulation-based learning experience challenges the outdated precepts of traditional manikin-based learning. The combination of wearable simulators and simulated participants brings simulation to life, adding the vital human element when teaching the essentials of patient-centered compassionate, connected care. After numerous awards and recognition for her work from the simulation community, Amy began balancing her workload at the university with a new title, CEO of Avkin Inc in 2015. Today, she continues to be recognized by her academic colleagues for her contributions to the simulation andragogy while at the same time ensuring Avkin is established as the company that is focused on excellence in simulation education.

Dan Weberg, Vice President, Transformation Services, Ascension
Dr. Dan Weberg is an expert in nursing, healthcare innovation and human-centered patient design with extensive clinical experience in emergency departments, acute in-patient hospital settings, and academia. He currently serves as the Vice President for Transformation Services at Ascension, supporting 60,000 nurses and 140+ facilities in modernizing nursing technology, developing new care models, and measuring innovation outcomes.

Dan is on the faculty at The Ohio State University College of Nursing and has multiple innovation fellowship programs. He is on the editorial board for Nursing Administration Quarterly and has authored two dozen peer-reviewed articles and two textbooks, including Evidence-Based Innovation Leadership for Health Professions and Leadership in Nursing Practice.
Dan earned his bachelor in Nursing and was in the first cohort to graduate from the Masters in Healthcare Innovation program at ASU, as well as the first-ever graduate of the Ph.D. in Healthcare Innovation Leadership program at ASU. Dan serves on several advisory boards, including the American Nurses Association Innovation Advisory Board. Jared Kutzin, DNP, MS, MPH, RN, FSSH is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Senior Director of Emergency Medicine Simulation at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Jared is a registered nurse with advanced degrees in health policy and management, public health, leadership, and medical education. His advanced training includes completing the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program (CQFP) offered by the Greater New York Hospital Association and the United Hospital Fund and the Comprehensive Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship (CPSLF) offered by the National Patient Safety Foundation and American Hospital Association. Dr. Alaina Herrington is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Judith Gore Gearhart Clinical Skills Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. David has been in simulation since he was young, simulating crash scenes for search and rescue in the Civil Air Patrol. From there he has has a wide range of careers that all gave him pieces to the puzzle that was put together about ten years ago when he entered the medical simulation industry. His first 8 years were with Wright State University in the CIMER simulation lab serving the emergency medicine residency as well as the Boonshoft School of Medicine. That lab also served local hospitals, EMS, nursing schools and others. CIMER had a large focus on inter professional simulations that brought all of these learners together. From there he accepted a position with Orbis Education. His primary partner site is with Xavier University ABSN program. He is an avid mentor and source of information in the Simulation community, and presents at many of the conferences in the industry. David was also one of the first 25 people to achieve the CHSOS-A certification from the Society of Simulation in Healthcare.

Margaret Verkuyl is a nursing professor at Centennial College in Canada. Since, 2013, she has been a leader in developing and researching virtual simulations and interactive textbooks. Over the years, she has received numerous prestigious local and international awards for her work. While gaining international attention, virtual simulations have become pervasive in nursing education globally. More recently, she developed an open-access Virtual Healthcare Experience consisting of eleven virtual gaming simulations that have had over 2 million plays! Rémy Roe joined the United States Army as a Special Operations Combat Medic in June 2006. Dr. Bryant is currently the Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs and Simulation and Associate Professor at Columbia school of nursing’s accredited Helene Fuld Health Trust Simulation Center. Dr. Bryant has over 20 years of teaching experience and 10 years of experience as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Throughout her career she has become an expert in the field of simulation through her experience with designing simulation centers and implementing simulation programs for two of the top-rated nursing schools in the country. In her current role she oversees the day-to-day operations and implementation of simulation-based education for all the graduate nursing and advance practice nursing students. Additional responsibilities include implementing initiatives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) for students and the surround community.
Dr. Bryant serves on many national and international committees focused on simulation and DEI. At Columbia University, she was appointed co-chair of the campus-wide antiracism taskforce for community service working. She is currently the co-chair of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s media and communication committee and appointed member of the DEI workgroup. She is serving her second year on the CDC funded Nurse-Led Vaccine Confidence Advisory Committee. Dr. Bryant is currently on the executive board for the Greater NYC Black Nurses Association including serving as the liaison for the NYC Black and Latinx Providers committee.

In 2010, I completed my PhD in Educational Leadership where I examined the impact of faculty debriefing training on the cognitive outcomes of students. Bob Armstrong is Executive Director of the Sentara Center for Simulation and Immersive Learning, where he administers the 24 full-time and 100+ part-time workforce, including staff, educators, technicians, and standardized patients. Bob is also the Program Director for the National Center for Collaboration in Medical Modeling and Simulation (NCCMMS). He is responsible for development of collaborative partnerships, personnel management, integration, and external funding. Lastly, Bob is the EVMS Director of Corporate Relations, focused on creating commercial outlets for EVMS generated research, development, and services.
Bob was elected President of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare for 2020. The SSH is an international society made up of over 4500 members; the organization is focused on promoting and fostering the growth of healthcare simulation across all disciplines of care.
Bob joined EVMS from Booz Allen Hamilton, where he provided M&S-based analysis, developed M&S training tools, and drafted M&S policy for Department of Defense clients. Prior to his time at Booz Allen, Bob was Director of Technology at the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center at ODU.
Bob retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2005 after a twenty year career. When he was not leading Marines as an artillery officer, he ran simulation centers and led a $350 million effort to enhance Marine Corps readiness through the application of M&S.

Dr. Okuda is the Executive Director and CEO of USF Health’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), Health Professions Conferencing Corporation (HPCC). In this role, he has oversight of a 90,000 ft2 state of the art, advanced training facility, with the mission of creating and providing experiential learning that improves clinical skills and patient care in the community and around the globe. In addition to this role, Dr. Okuda also serves as USF Health’s Associate Vice President of the Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice (https://health.usf.edu/ipep) focused on creating interprofessional learning opportunities from early healthcare training to clinical practice. He is Professor at the Morsani College of Medicine and practices clinically in the emergency department at Tampa General Hospital.
Prior to coming to USF Health, Dr. Okuda was the national medical director for the Simulation Learning Education and Research Network (SimLEARN) where he established national strategy and business plans for simulation-based programs at more than 150 U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs’ medical facilities. In addition to his role as national medical director of SimLEARN, Dr. Okuda served as the acting deputy chief of patient care services officer for the Veteran’s Health Administration, where he was responsible for policy development and oversight of the national Office for Women’s Health Care, Community and Preventative Health, Social Work and Pharmacy Benefits Management. Before joining the VA, he was assistant vice president and director of the Institute for Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, the largest public health system in the United States.
Dr. Okuda received his Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience from Brown University, his medical degree from New York Medical College, and his certificate in Healthcare Modeling and Simulation from the Naval Postgraduate School in California. He completed a residency in emergency medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where he served as their chief resident, and then completed a clinical quality fellowship from the Greater New York Hospital Association. He is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and an inaugural fellow of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Academy. He has also served as a chair or member of several medical and simulation committees; and most recently serves as President for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

Nicole Giancaterino, DNP, MSN, RNC-OB, CNE, is a Curriculum and Instruction Specialist and Assistant Professor in Chamberlain University’s Pre-Licensure and Post Licensure program.
She has worked in various areas of clinical nursing practice, including obstetrics and community health. She has also taught on campus and online pre/post-licensure programs. She enjoys bringing experiential learning into the classroom whenever possible. Her doctoral focus was in the area of Systems Leadership and Faculty Development. Nicole is certified in Obstetrics and is a Certified Nurse Educator. Her favorite things to do are to travel and spend time with family.

Shelly Houser is a unique guest who started in simulation much differently from my other guests. As a congenital hemipelvectomy amputee, Shelly started out as an SP for St. Luke's hospital, Jefferson University, and Villanova University. She has a bachelor's in Media Studies and a Master's in Human Services. Having worked on television shows such as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Sprout TV, Shelly is no stranger to script supervising and writing. After 10 years of professional and a lifetime of personal experience, Shelly has launched her consulting company, Inclusive Consulting, LLC, where she collaborates and consults with teaching institutions and businesses seeking to improve their knowledge, protocols, and best practices. Shelly also has produced, hosted, and edited Life Beyond the Label podcast. She previously carried out the same function on DisAbilty Talks for two years. Elizabeth Wells-Beede, PhD, RN, C-EFM, CHSE-A, CNE is currenlty a Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University. She has been a nurse educator and simulationist for 12-years teaching in associate, bachelor, and master’s programs. Before teaching in nursing, she was an educator for healthcare professions in the military and hospital setting. Dr. Wells-Beede has been incorporating simulation since 2011 when she led her educational department in the implementation of simulation through an initiative by the Air Force Surgeon General. In 2013, she furthered her education and sought the Leadership in Simulation Instruction & Management Certificate from Robert Morris University. Dr. Wells-Beede has conducted research in the use of the flipped classroom in nursing education and integration of virtual reality simulation in nursing. Since receiving her certificate, she has gone on to implement and help guide simulation in each program she teaches. She is actively involved in the College of Nursing Simulation committee, serves on an advisory board for the Health Sciences Clinical Learning Simulation Center, and was co-lead for writing and submitting for provisional accreditation with the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, which was recognized at IMSH 2022. Since receiving her CHSE-A, she has actively served the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation Learning by collaborating with fellow simulationist in the revised 2021 Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice ™: Objectives & Outcomes and Professional Development. She has also been a presenter with the Best Practices workshop with SSH & ASPE, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for INACSL.
Michelle Aebersold, PhD, RN, CHSE, FAAN
DR. MICHELLE AEBERSOLD is a Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing and a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Information. She is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She has a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, a Master of Science in Business Administration and a PhD in Nursing. Dr. Aebersold is an XR Faculty Innovator in Residence through the University of Michigan XR Initiative.
Dr. Aebersold has been teaching since 2006. She teaches in the area of leadership, analytics, quality and safety in the graduate and doctoral nursing courses. She often oversees doctoral students for their scholarly projects and participates on dissertation committees.
Dr. Aebersold has extensive experience in using a variety of simulation learning methods including Extended Realities to improve the care of patients through caregiver education and training. She is currently working on a grant-funded project from the National Cancer Institute to use simulation to improve the safe delivery of chemotherapy by nurses and pharmacists. Her other grant work includes using immersive virtual reality to improve teamwork and communication in pediatric cardiac arrest situations and Improving Pediatric Acute Care through Simulation Training (IMPACTS).
Dr. Aebersold has numerous publications, presents on a variety of topics and is often an invited speaker at international, regional and local conferences. She consults with nursing schools around improving their simulation programs, developing virtual educational assets and other projects.

In this episode Phillip shares his unique journey into simulation and the impact he has had in many parts of the country.
Phillip Wortham is currently the Director of Operations and Technology (COO) at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) one of the world’s largest simulation centers located in Tampa Florida. CAMLS is a 90,000 sqft free standing center with over 40 employees.
Prior to joining CAMLS, Phillip spent over six years leading Intermountain Healthcare’s Simulation Consortium comprising of 24 hospitals and 6 simulation centers as the Simulation Business Director of Operations and Technology in Salt Lake City Utah. As a member of the Simulation Executive Council, he partnered with cross-functional team leads for overall strategic vision, and priorities for system-wide learning. He provided direction of design, implementation, and evaluation of all simulation activities, training material, technology, and course outcomes.
In addition to his role at Intermountain Healthcare, Phillip served as the Technology Chair for the Utah Simulation Coalition, working to bridge the gap between academic institutions and healthcare facilities using technology and innovation.
Prior to his extensive work at Intermountain Healthcare, Phillip held positions as Simulation Operations Specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado where he was integral in the development of a new simulation program on the University of Colorado campus. His journey in healthcare started at Denver Health Medical Center as the Chief Video Production Engineer where he oversaw emerging technologies such as Telehealth and video conferencing. As Colorado’s primary safety-net institution, Denver Health provides billions of dollars in uncompensated care and serves as a model for other safety net institutions across the nation.
Phillip is currently an accreditation Site Reviewer for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The Chair of the Super-Sized Simulation Affinity Group (SSH), Mentor for Simulation Operations Specialists (SimGHOSTS). Recently honored by the Tampa Bay Business Journal as one of 40 professionals under the age of 40 in Tampa Bay driving innovation in our community and a recent award winner of a Videographer Award for his work in the world of film production and marketing.

Dr. Desiree A. Díaz is an internationally recognized scholar, researcher, and Associate Professor at the University of Central Florida College of Nursing. She has been a nurse educator for the past 17 year. Suzan (Suzie) Kardong-Edgren PhD, RN, ANEF, CHSE, FSSH, FAAN is an internationally known speaker, consultant, and educational researcher with over 150 publications. Dr. Edgren was a consultant on the landmark National Council of State Boards of Nursing National Simulation Study that determined that up to 50% of traditional clinical could be replaced with high quality simulation. Dr. Edgren served as the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Simulation in Nursing for 10 years; and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of 2 new interactive online review guides for those seeking certification in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. She has been awarded both the National League for Nursing Deborah Spunt Lectureship and the Michael Gordon Lectureship in Simulation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Dr. Edgren served as chair of the Research Committee for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and the Vice President of Research for the INACSL. She is a Fellow in the Society of Simulation in Healthcare, the Academy of Nursing Education Fellows, and the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Edgren is the 2021-2022 President of the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation in Nursing (INACSL) and an Associate Professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston.

Dr. Gonzalez is the VP of Clinical Learning Resources at Sentinel U®. She is an internationally recognized simulation expert. She is one of 84 advanced certified healthcare simulation educators (CHSE-A) globally. In the fall of 2020, she was recognized by the prestigious American Academy of Nurses as a Fellow (FAAN). She is also a fellow of the Academy of Nurse Educators (ANEF). Her nursing career focuses on advancing the science of nursing education through the use of simulation and its impact on learner outcomes. Dr.Gonzalez has a very specific body of work that has resulted in over 20 data-based manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, and one clinical skills textbook. She was Co-PI on a large interprofessional grant through the National Science Foundation (NSF). She is one of several scientists to have two patents: on Detecting Sterile Field Events and Related Methods and Virtual Patients. She is a seasoned nurse educator with experience teaching across the curriculum to include live, hybrid, online, and synchronous delivery methods.
With over 17 years of Nursing experience, primarily in Pediatric Emergency, before pivoting into the Healthcare Innovation and Simulation realm, Eric fell in love with the idea of learning through experience. An idea that he describes as The Toddler Approach.

Dr. Bazakis is Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Central Michigan University’s College of Medicine. A member of the core faculty for the Emergency Residency training program, he is also Co-Director of Emergency Medicine Simulation for the Emergency Medicine Residency at CMU. Dr. Bazakis is a formally trained life and executive coach and a consultant in both the clinical and educational arenas. His interests include the use of high-fidelity simulation in the development of clinical mastery, critical conversations in clinical medicine, and effective public speaking.

Dr. KT Waxman is a national nurse leader and executive with extensive experience in healthcare and corporate settings. She is an Associate Professor at the University of San Francisco and is the Director of the Executive Leadership Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. She is also the Director of the California Simulation Alliance (CSA) at HealthImpact. In addition to her work at USF and the CSA, she is the Editor-in -Chief for Nursing Administration Quarterly (NAQ). An internationally known speaker and author, Waxman is also a past president of the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL) and past board member, serving as Treasurer, for the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). She is a Past President of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), a 4,400+ member international, inter-professional organization.
Dr. Waxman's work has been published extensively and can be found in the Journal for Simulation in Healthcare, Clinical Simulation for Nursing, JONA, Journal of Nursing Education, NAQ, Nurse Leader and Creative Nursing journals. She has authored 3 books on Finance and Budgeting and is currently working on the third edition of “Financial and Business Management for the DNP”, published by Springer. She co-authored “Healthcare Simulation Program Builder”, is co-editor of “Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Nursing” to be published in late 2021 and has authored several chapters in simulation and leadership textbooks.
