A brain surgeon recently shared a powerful observation:
"If you do too much for your kids, you build your self-esteem by stealing theirs."
That one sentence sparked one of our favorite parenting conversations.
Why do parents feel compelled to rescue their children from every disappointment? What happens when we remove every obstacle from our athlete's path? And how do we help our children become resilient without abandoning them?
In this episode, Shad Martin and Dustin Smith discuss why struggle isn't the enemy—it may be one of life's greatest teachers.
If you're raising athletes (or future adults), this episode is for you.

A viral 9U baseball video has parents everywhere talking.
After a young player hits what should have been the biggest home run of his life, an opposing coach appeals a technicality that erases the moment. Was it within the rules? Yes. Was it the right thing to do?
In this episode, Shad Martin and Dustin Smith discuss what youth sports are really supposed to accomplish. Are we trying to win youth games—or raise resilient adults?
If you're a parent, coach, or athlete, this conversation will challenge the way you think about competition, teaching, and long-term success.
Remember: Sports are a tool to shape young people into who they're meant to become.

In this week's Especially for Athletes podcast, Shad Martin and Dustin Smith explore one of the foundational principles of Especially for Athletes: Seek to Be Your Best, Not the Best. Through the story of Polish sprinter Ewa Swoboda's emotional celebration after a personal record and Kobe Bryant's powerful perspective on becoming an "overachiever," they discuss why comparison steals joy and how athletes can find lasting fulfillment through growth, effort, and personal improvement. This episode is a powerful reminder that true success comes from maximizing your own potential—not from measuring yourself against everyone else.
Key Takeaways
Comparison Is the Thief of Joy
Social media has made it easier than ever for athletes to compare themselves to others instead of focusing on their own growth.
Personal Progress Deserves Celebration
Athletes should celebrate personal bests and growth, even when they don't finish first.
Greatness Is About Becoming
The greatest athletes focus on maximizing their potential rather than protecting a reputation.
Kobe Bryant Was an Overachiever
Kobe wanted to be remembered not just as talented, but as someone who maximized every gift he was given.
Compete Against Yesterday's Version of Yourself
The healthiest comparison is comparing who you are today with who you were yesterday.
Fill the Tank, Then Empty the Tank
Success comes from fully preparing and then giving everything you have when the opportunity arrives.
Appreciation Matters More Than Recognition
People need to know they are valued for who they are and the effort they give—not just the results they produce.

In this week's Especially for Athletes podcast, Shad Martin and Dustin Smith tackle one of the greatest challenges facing youth sports today: patience. Too often athletes are labeled too early as stars or failures before their bodies, confidence, and abilities have fully developed. Through powerful insights about development, confidence, work ethic, and a moving story from Cameron Stewart about his son Tyson, Shad and Dustin remind parents, coaches, and athletes that development is not linear and that some of the greatest athletes are simply late bloomers. This episode is a must-listen for anyone tempted to judge potential too quickly.
Key Takeaways1. Don't Label Athletes Too EarlyChildren develop physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially at different rates. Success—or struggle—at age 10 does not predict success at age 18.2. Puberty Changes EverythingMany athletes who appear average before puberty become exceptional later as their bodies and confidence develop.3. Focus on Growth, Not Playing TimeInstead of demanding opportunities, ask: "What do I need to do to improve?" Growth should always come before entitlement.4. Let Kids ExploreYoung athletes should be allowed to try different sports and activities until they discover where their talents and passions align.5. Love of the Game MattersIf a child still loves a sport, don't pull them away simply because they aren't currently the best player.6. Struggle Builds Valuable SkillsAthletes who must work for opportunities often develop resilience, work ethic, and perseverance that become major advantages later.7. There Are Lessons on the BenchAthletes learn just as much from fighting for playing time as they do from standing on the podium.00:32:17 - Introduction: Why Youth Sports Needs More Patience00:33:37 - The Danger of Labeling Kids Too Early00:36:27 - Why Puberty Changes Everything00:37:52 - Cameron Stewart's Story About His Son Tyson00:38:57 - How Parents Should Approach Playing Time Conversations00:41:42 - Why Late Bloomers Matter00:42:37 - When Should Kids Quit a Sport?00:45:02 - Family Rules About Commitment and Finishing Seasons00:46:02 - James Clear's "Explore vs. Exploit" Principle00:47:27 - Finding Your Lane Through Exploration00:48:17 - Final Advice for Parents and Coaches00:49:37 - Lessons Learned from Cameron Stewart's Example00:50:07 - Eyes Up, Do the Work⸻

In this powerful episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, Shad Martin and Dustin Smith discuss men's mental health, the stigma surrounding emotional struggles, and the courage required to ask for help. Using the story of NBA All-Star Kevin Love and his public battle with panic attacks and anxiety, they explore why mental health deserves the same attention and care as physical injuries. Whether you're an athlete, coach, parent, or teammate, this conversation will help you better understand the importance of checking on others, speaking up when you're struggling, and creating environments where people feel safe asking for help.
Key Takeaways
Just because an injury isn't visible doesn't mean it isn't serious. Anxiety, depression, and panic attacks can impact performance and quality of life just as much as physical injuries.
Real strength is not pretending everything is fine. Real strength is having the humility and courage to admit when you're struggling and seek help.
Kevin Love was an NBA All-Star at the height of his career when he experienced a panic attack. Mental health struggles can affect anyone regardless of talent, success, popularity, or income.
Great coaches don't just develop athletes; they develop people. Pay attention to behavioral changes and create safe opportunities for athletes to talk.
LeBron James's response to Kevin Love's article is a model of leadership. Great teammates don't judge; they support.
Mental health issues often remain hidden because people fear what others will think. Honest conversations break down stigma and create healing.
When Kevin Love shared his story publicly, he gave countless others permission to seek help and realize they weren't alone.

In this episode of the Sportlight Podcast, Shad Martin and Dustin Smith revisit a powerful lesson from Paralympian and former BYU football player Jeff Griffin. After a tragic accident ended Jeff’s dream of playing football, he learned that resilience is not always about refusing to quit—it is sometimes about having the courage to redirect your energy and dream a new dream. This episode is especially meaningful for athletes facing graduation, transition, disappointment, or the closing of a chapter.
Key Takeaways1. Resilience sometimes means redirecting, not quitting.
When one door closes, the challenge is to take the lessons, discipline, and strength you gained and put them toward something new.
2. Some dreams have a shelf life.
Athletic careers, seasons, and chapters eventually end, but the growth from them can last forever.
3. The lessons of sports are not reserved for stars.
Every athlete can learn discipline, sacrifice, teamwork, toughness, and how to pursue a worthy goal.
4. Don’t stop dreaming just because one dream ends.
A closed door may be the beginning of a better chapter.
5. Where your focus goes, your energy flows.
Part of maturity is deciding where your energy belongs next.

In this episode of the Especially for Athletes podcast, Dustin Smith and Shad Martin revisit a powerful insight shared by former NFL All-Pro Eric Weddle about the “fine line between average and great.” What follows is a deep discussion on consistency, sacrifice, self-motivation, preparation, humility, and the daily habits that separate people who merely dream from people who actually develop greatness.
The conversation explores why we often romanticize greatness instead of recognizing the discipline behind it, why consistency matters more than motivation, and how small daily choices eventually become extraordinary outcomes. The episode also dives into practical ways athletes, parents, coaches, and young people can create routines of excellence and build resilient habits that last.
This episode is a reminder that greatness usually isn’t dramatic—it’s accumulated.
Key Takeaways* Greatness is usually accumulated, not inherited. * Consistency matters more than temporary motivation. * Small daily choices create long-term success. * Most people romanticize greatness because it removes responsibility from themselves. * Preparation allows people to capitalize on opportunity. * Humility is essential if you want to improve. * Motivation fades quickly; disciplined routines endure. * Sacrifice is often the difference between average and great. * Winning the battle with yourself is the most important competition. * Developing skill requires patience and repetition long before anyone notices.

In this week’s Especially for Athletes podcast, professional golfer and former BYU standout Keanu Akina shares what it really means to “Win the Hour”—and why smart work beats just working harder. From grinding alone across Europe to learning how sleep, nutrition, and balance actually fuel performance, Keanu opens up about the unseen challenges of chasing a dream at the highest level. He also shares powerful insights on resilience, letting go of mistakes, and discovering your true purpose beyond your sport. If you’ve ever felt pressure to do more, struggled to bounce back, or wondered how to balance ambition with sustainability, this episode will challenge how you think about growth and success.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Smart work > more work
Winning the hour isn’t just grinding longer—it’s doing the right things at the right time, even if that means resting, eating, or recovering.
You can’t outwork poor balance
Keanu learned the hard way that skipping meals, sleep, and strength training led to injury and burnout—taking care of your body is part of the work.
Let it go and play the next shot
Whether in golf or life, you can’t change the last mistake. Growth comes from focusing forward, not replaying what already happened.
Resilience is built in the hard moments
From lonely travel in Europe to tough tournament rounds, resilience comes from choosing to keep going—even when it’s uncomfortable or uncertain.
Your purpose is bigger than your sport
Golf isn’t who Keanu is—it’s a platform. True fulfillment comes from using your talents to bless others and bring good into the world.
You are where you are—now move forward
Like golf, life doesn’t offer many mulligans. Accept your current position and focus on the next right step.

Resilience isn’t always forged in the big, dramatic moments. More often, it’s built quietly—hour by hour, decision by decision—when no one is watching. In Episode 157 of the Especially for Athletes podcast, Navy Midshipman linebacker Marcus Bleazard shares a powerful perspective on resilience that applies to every athlete, student, and leader navigating demanding seasons of life.
Marcus describes the relentless rhythm of life at the United States Naval Academy: early mornings, classes stacked back-to-back, meetings, practice, study, and doing it all again the next day. Like every athlete, he admits there are moments when motivation is thin—when the bed is warm, the weight feels heavy, or the books feel endless. What keeps him going isn’t waiting for a massive breakthrough, but learning to look for “flecks of gold” in the grind. Not every day produces a highlight-reel moment. Some days, resilience looks like finding one small win and choosing to show up anyway.
That mindset perfectly reflects one of our core principles at Especially for Athletes: Win the Hour. Marcus reminds us that resilience isn’t about loving every task—it’s about attacking the task in front of you with heart and focus. Study sessions may not feel inspiring. Practices may feel monotonous. But when athletes learn to search for small progress—one rep, one page, one assignment completed—they build momentum that compounds over time.
Throughout the episode, Marcus also reinforces the power of identity and self-talk. Injuries, setbacks, and doubt are inevitable. What matters is how we speak to ourselves in those moments. Resilience grows when we don’t negotiate with the voice that tells us to quit, but instead talk to ourselves—reminding ourselves who we are, what we’ve overcome, and why we belong. That’s resilience rooted not in hype, but in disciplined belief.
Episode 157 is a reminder that resilience isn’t flashy. It’s faithful. It’s choosing effort over excuses, love over contempt, and progress over perfection. If you’re in a season that feels repetitive, demanding, or discouraging, Marcus Bleazard’s message will help you reframe the grind and rediscover purpose in the process.

Midseason can feel heavy for girl basketball players. The excitement of the season has worn off, bodies are tired, roles may feel unclear, and confidence can quietly slip. In Episode 156 of the Especially for Athletes, former Division I player and coach Alli Bills speaks directly to athletes living in that tension—and offers perspective that is both grounding and empowering .
Alli begins with an honest challenge: “If you want to be great, you have to ask yourself—do I really want to be great?”Midseason is often when players feel discouraged by constant correction, and she reminds athletes that growth doesn’t mean you suddenly forgot how to play. “You started the season thinking you were pretty good, and by this point you feel like you can’t do anything right,” she explains. Her counsel is to pause and intentionally reconnect with what you do well. “I want you to write down all the things you know you’re great at,” she says, emphasizing that belief is the foundation of real development.
One of the most powerful parts of the conversation centers on self-talk and consistency. “You are not going to get better if you are not visualizing it or in the gym or in the weight room—it won’t happen,” Alli states plainly. She encourages athletes to build simple, repeatable routines and anchor positive self-talk to physical actions. “You cannot think of two things at once,” she teaches. “So choose the positive one.” Whether it’s at the free-throw line or during a tough practice, those routines become a mental reset button that brings confidence back when pressure is highest.
Alli also reminds players that roles matter—even when they don’t show up on the stat sheet. Sharing stories from her coaching career, she highlights athletes who may not have played much but made an enormous impact through effort, energy, and gratitude. “The impact that you can have in any role is up to you—and it can be significant,” she says. Midseason is not the time to shrink or disengage; it’s a time to lean in, prepare your body, and be ready. “When your number is called, you don’t want to question if you’re ready—you want to know you are.”
Her message to every girl basketball player is hopeful and demanding at the same time: have a vision, stay consistent, be where your feet are, and don’t fear failure. “The only true failure is not trying,” Alli reminds us. Midseason isn’t something to survive—it’s an opportunity to grow into the player and person you’re becoming. To hear Alli’s full wisdom, stories, and practical advice, we invite you to listen to Episode 156 of the Especially for Athletes podcast

In this week’s E4A Podcast, we sat down with longtime friend and football coach Paul Peterson, who has coached hundreds of college athletes and raised five boys of his own. His message to parents: we must be more intentional.
Paul sees a growing trend—kids struggling not because they lack talent, but because well-meaning adults unintentionally teach them to rely on excuses. He put it simply: “Kids know when you’re fluffing things for them. They see right through it.” When parents blame the coach, the refs, the playing time, the system, or the circumstances, it sends a quiet but dangerous message:
“Your growth is someone else’s responsibility.”
The best parents—and the best athletes—reject that mindset.
1. Don’t Clear the Path. Teach Them How to Walk It.Paul talked about the shift in modern parenting: “We used to hover. Now we snowplow—moving everything out of the way.” But adversity is not the enemy—it’s the classroom. Kids gain confidence only by facing difficulty, not being protected from it.
2. Redirect Excuses Toward Ownership. When a child wants to blame the environment, the coach, or the situation, Paul suggests helping them focus on the only things they can actually control: effort, attitude, preparation, and response. Those are the muscles that create resilience.
3. Be Their Biggest Fan—Not Their Second Coach.Paul shared that his sons know he loves them regardless of performance. That kind of clarity gives kids freedom to try hard, fail, learn, and try again. The best post-game conversation is often just:
“I love watching you play.”
4. Encourage Them to Earn Opportunity—Not Expect It.As we discussed on the episode, kids today need the reminder:
“Perform your way into opportunity, don’t pout your way into it.”
Nothing builds character like working hard, staying ready, and letting your actions—not your frustration—speak for you.

In our conversation with Ridgeline High School volleyball coach Jaicee Roden, one principle came through loud and clear: the athletes who rise to the top are the ones who learn to eliminate distractions.
Coach Roden, who has led some of Utah’s most competitive volleyball programs, shared how she’s seen the mental side of sports evolve in the age of constant connection. “Kids today have bigger battles with social media,” she said. “They’re not always sure why they’re doing what they’re doing anymore.”
She pointed to Dr. Craig Manning’s book The Fearless Mind and its formula for high performance:
Potential + Training – Distractions = Performance.
“The elimination of distractions is everything,” Roden explained. “The athletes who can build a better relationship with eliminating distractions are the ones who become elite.”
That’s a perfect example of the E4A principle Win the Hour — the call to be intentional with our time, to focus on what matters most in the moment, and to do what needs to be done rather than be pulled away by what doesn’t.
Coach Roden helps her players identify their distractions — from phones and social media to something more subtle, like perfectionism or self-doubt. “We don’t realize that our own hyper-criticism can be a distraction,” she said. “Good isn’t bad — but good is never great. If we want to be great, we have to rise above good.”
Her players use mental performance tools like Dr. Manning’s High Performance Journal to stay focused on their tasks — not their ego. “Task orientation,” she explained, “is when we know our role and we complete it, no matter how we feel. Ego orientation is when we think, ‘How does this make me look?’ The more we focus on the task, the more we grow.”
Coach Roden’s approach reminds every athlete that greatness isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing what matters most, free from distraction. As she said, “Perfection isn’t an option, but progress is.”
So, how can you “Win the Hour”?

This week’s episode features NBA player and Utah State legend Sam Merrill. His journey—from quiet gym hours to big-stage moments—reminds us that greatness grows from daily choices. Sam’s counsel hits three Especially for Athletes principles head-on: Be Resilient, Win the Hour, and Seek to Bless, Not to Impress. Here are a few highlights to discuss with your team or family—and a link to the full conversation at the end.
1) Be Resilient: Build Macro Confidence
Sam distinguishes between the ups and downs of a single shot and the deeper trust built over months and years.
“I’m a very macro confident person… my confidence game to game or shot to shot can go up and down, but I’ve always felt so confident in the work I’m putting in—that it’s going to pay off… During those years where I wasn’t sure it was going to work out in the NBA, I felt very confident it would work out somewhere because I put in the work.” E4A Takeaway: Resilience isn’t pretending every moment feels great. It’s choosing to keep working when the results are delayed. Believe in the process you control.
2) Win the Hour: Choose “Want-To” over “Have-To”
Sam’s separator isn’t a secret drill—it’s the intention behind every rep. “Are you going to the gym because you have to… or because you want to get better and get something done? I’ve played with guys who are there because they have to be, and guys who are there because they want to be. I always felt like I wanted to be there—and still do.” E4A Takeaway: Before each workout, decide your purpose. Go to get something done. Stack intentional hours—one by one—until the pattern becomes your edge.
3) Seek to Bless, Not to Impress: Be a Selfless Teammate
Even at the highest level, teams thrive when players choose people over ego.
“Being a good teammate is being as selfless as you can be… Ask yourself: ‘Am I being selfless for my teammates? Is this helping all of us, not just me?’ I’ve had great teammates—Jrue Holiday was an insanely good human… And with Donovan Mitchell, he cares about everybody, communicates, understands what role players go through.” E4A Takeaway: Your influence is bigger than your box score. Use your voice and your energy to lift others. That’s leadership that lasts.
Why This Matters Sam’s message fits the heart of Especially for Athletes: develop confidence through consistent work, be intentional with every hour, and value people over praise. That’s how sports become a tool for character—not just a chase for achievements.

This week, we sat down with former University of Utah basketball player and current high school basketball coach Doug Meacham for a deep and inspiring conversation sparked by comments from professional golfer Scottie Scheffler. After winning a major tournament, Scheffler said that while victory brings excitement, his true fulfillment comes from faith and family—not trophies. He shared that he’d rather be remembered as a great father than a great golfer.
Coach Meacham, along with Especially for Athletes founder Dustin Smith, explored how keeping sports in proper perspective can ground us, steady us, and make us better both on and off the field. Coach Smith shared the powerful story of a devastating state championship loss and how the five minutes he spent with his team afterward may have been the most important coaching moment of the season.
This is a conversation every athlete and coach should hear—a reminder that while the desire to win is important, the lessons learned in the process are what truly last. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts.

In episode #141 of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, we sit down with Ally Gum, a track athlete currently running at Duke University. Ally shares her incredible journey from being a Provo Bulldog in Utah to competing at the University of Utah, taking a break to serve a mission in Boston, and ultimately transferring to Duke University to finish her collegiate career. Along the way, she’s learned invaluable lessons about resilience, leadership, and what it truly takes to compete at the highest level.
Key Takeaways:
Ally opens up about the importance of setting priorities and goals. She explains how being a high-level athlete means being deliberate with every moment of your day—balancing practice, recovery, meals, and academics. She encourages athletes to “fall in love with the process,” saying that treating the everyday actions as part of the competition itself can help you get ahead of your competitors. 2. The Importance of Sleep:
A surprising lesson Ally learned was the value of sleep in performance. She shares how her coach at Duke emphasized the importance of rest, even more than practice sometimes. Ally admits that, in high school, she didn’t prioritize sleep, but now she realizes how crucial it is for recovery and maximizing her performance. 3. Competing Without Contempt:
Competing with respect and camaraderie rather than animosity is essential. Ally discusses the unique nature of track and field, where athletes from different teams compete side by side but can still encourage each other. She describes a moment of joy when a teammate ran a personal record and how it felt to genuinely cheer for her teammate’s success, illustrating the true spirit of competition. 4. Resilience in Action:
Ally shares her personal story of overcoming setbacks, including a painful injury and being replaced on her team right before qualifying for nationals. Despite feeling crushed, Ally used this setback as fuel to push harder and ultimately transferred to Duke, where she’s now running her best times ever. Her story is a powerful example of how resilience is built through adversity and how athletes can rise above challenges. 5. The Spotlight and Using It to Lift Others:
With the extra attention that athletes often get, Ally discusses the responsibility of using that “spotlight” to help and lift others. She shares how being involved in sports has given her the chance to mentor and motivate younger athletes, and how using her platform has allowed her to create a positive impact on the lives of others. 6. Leadership and Teamwork:
Ally reflects on the importance of her teammates, who have been a huge source of support throughout her athletic career. In this episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, Shad and Dustin explore a powerful message from Clemson Tigers coach, Dabo Swinney: “Let the light inside of you always be brighter than the light shining on you.” This principle aligns perfectly with the core of Especially for Athletes, where we emphasize the importance of athletes using their “sportlight” not just to impress, but to uplift and bless others.
We discuss the significance of embracing your role on the team, no matter where you fall on the depth chart, and how true greatness comes from the character, resilience, and humility that shine from within. The conversation also touches on how athletes can use their visibility to impact others in a positive way, much like the example set by athletes such as Tim Tebow.
Key Takeaways:
• Embrace your role: Be the best teammate you can be, whether you’re playing or supporting from the sidelines.
• Let your inner light shine: Use the attention you receive to help others, rather than basking in the spotlight.
• Do the work: Consistency, hard work, and supporting your teammates—whether anyone’s watching or not—lead to lasting success.
Tune in as we break down how athletes can “Seek to Bless, Not Impress” and reflect the light within them to inspire those around them.

In this episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, Shad and Dustin dive into the important concept of likability vs. status popularity, discussing how the principles of kindness and genuine relationships can have a lasting positive impact. The conversation is sparked by the wisdom shared by Kyle Collinsworth, former BYU basketball star, who advises high school students to “put down cool and pick up kindness.”
They explore an article by child psychologist Mitch Prinstein, who explains the two types of popularity: likability, where people make others feel good, and status, which focuses on outward appearances and social power. The latter may provide short-term recognition, but as Prinstein points out, it often leads to loneliness, stress, and dissatisfaction in the long run. On the other hand, likability brings lasting benefits: stronger relationships, career success, and even improved well-being.
Drawing from sports and their own experiences, Shad and Dustin emphasize how athletes have a unique opportunity to leverage their status to bless others, rather than impress them. They stress that being a likable athlete—one who lifts others up and values relationships—creates a ripple effect that lasts long after the game ends.
Join us for a conversation about the importance of kindness, authentic connections, and why building likability is far more important than chasing status. Eyes up, do the work, and remember: kindness has the power to shape your future.

In this powerful episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, we focus on the core principle of resilience. Shad and Dustin reflect on the inspiring story of Mason Sawyer, a former Utah Mr. Basketball and now high school coach, whose life was changed forever after a tragic accident that claimed the lives of his wife, children, brother, and nephew. In the face of such unimaginable loss, Mason found strength in the life lessons he learned through sports.
Mason shares how the simple advice from his high school coach—“life is 10% what happens to you, 90% how you respond”—became a guiding principle in his recovery. This lesson, often heard in the context of sports, helped Mason to focus on what he could control and rise above the overwhelming pain and grief. He reflected on how sports, through practices like controlling effort, attitude, and focus, prepared him to handle life’s most difficult challenges.
Dustin and Shad discuss the importance of resilience and how it can be built through sports. They emphasize that while we often focus on the outcome of athletic pursuits, the true value lies in how sports help young people develop character, work ethic, and the ability to face adversity. They also touch on the importance of mindfulness—taking a step back to assess situations and choosing how to respond, just like Mason did in his moment of crisis.
Join us for a heartfelt conversation about resilience, the life lessons sports provide, and why youth participation in sports can shape young people into strong, capable adults. Eyes up, do the work, and build resilience—because life will throw challenges your way, but you’ll be ready for them.

In this episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, we dive deep into one of our core principles—compete without contempt—and explore how challenging it can be to live this principle during intense moments, especially when faced with constant, classless chatter from rivals.
Dustin and Shad discuss the heated Arizona vs. Arizona State basketball rivalry game, where Coach Bobby Hurley of Arizona State refused to shake hands with the Arizona coach after a relentless game. Hurley’s frustration stemmed from the continuous taunting and disrespect during the game, which led to a moment of conflict after the game.
The episode takes a closer look at how coaches, players, and teams can uphold competing without contempt even when emotions run high. Should players shake hands after a game full of trash talk, or is it better to avoid the handshake altogether to prevent an escalation? What role do coaches play in handling these situations with class and leadership?
Dustin offers his thoughts as a longtime coach, emphasizing the importance of teaching athletes to stay focused on the game and avoid engaging in the negativity. He also discusses the significance of leadership in moments of tension, with the reminder that “the best thing to do is just take your licking, and the sun will come up tomorrow.”
Join us as we discuss these tough moments in sports and how to handle them with grace and integrity, even when it’s incredibly difficult. As always, eyes up, do the work, and compete without contempt.

As a doctor of behavioral health, Dr. Martin offers valuable insights into how planning can benefit our mental health, improve performance, and help athletes, coaches, and parents manage their time effectively.
We explore the concept of planning within our win the hour framework—where each hour of the day is strategically used to reach your goals. Dr. Martin emphasizes the need for balance in planning: while planning is essential, it’s crucial to avoid getting paralyzed by the need for perfection. He introduces us to three key strategies that will help athletes (and anyone looking to improve) create better, healthier plans that promote growth, reduce stress, and foster success.

In this episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, we focus on one of our core principles: Seek to bless, not to impress. This principle encourages athletes to shift their focus from seeking validation or admiration to genuinely lifting others up.
We dive into a deeply impactful conversation with Abby Cox, the First Lady of Utah, who works closely with the Especially for Athletes program and its Unified Sports initiative. Abby shares a touching story about a young man who, despite people being friendly, had to ask others if they would be his friend. His words—“People were friendly, but they weren’t my friend”—reveal the emotional depth of what it means to truly care for someone.
Abby’s work with Unified Sports has made a huge difference in the lives of athletes, teaching them to look beyond surface-level kindness and truly see others for who they are. This conversation leads us into an exploration of how we can take this principle into our everyday lives, both as athletes and as individuals in our communities.
Key Discussion Points:
• The difference between being friendly and being a true friend.
• Why being a friend takes work, sacrifice, and emotional investment.
• Abby Cox’s impactful work with Unified Sports and how athletes are stepping up to serve others.
• The importance of seeking to bless others without expecting anything in return.
• Why athletes should strive to be a positive force in their communities and teams by living with eyes up and doing the work.
This episode highlights the power of real connection and how athletes, coaches, and parents can influence their communities by going beyond superficial interactions. Seek to bless, not to impress—because when you lift others, you elevate yourself in the process.

In this powerful episode of the Especially for Athletes Podcast, we dive into the core principle of resilience, with insights from national champion coach Diljeet Taylor. As the head coach of BYU’s cross-country teams, Coach Taylor recently led the women’s team to a National Championship. She shares her philosophy on resilience, explaining that true growth happens when athletes are willing to embrace the “dark place”—the discomfort and pain that comes with pushing beyond their limits.
In this episode, we reflect on her message that resilience requires a decision to face hardship before it even comes. It’s about knowing that discomfort is inevitable in the pursuit of excellence, and instead of running from it, we must embrace it and keep moving forward. Coach Taylor’s insights not only apply to cross-country but to all sports and life challenges.

On September 10th, 2001, all of us who were alive at that time went to bed not realizing that the next day the whole world would change, but for some the world would change more than for others.
The next day as planes began crashing into buildings our first responders began to run into burning collapsing buildings while others were running out them.
In other places military men and women began to ready themselves to find and eliminate those who would seek to do us harm. As we approach the anniversary of that life altering day we are doing an episode to pay tribute to those who put their life on the line for us each day.
Sitting in a high school class in Northern California on 9/11 was a star athlete named Jordan Stevenson. Jordan was one of those who in future days would choose to serve his country during a time when he knew he would go to war. While serving in Afghanistan he was shot in the head, was in a coma for months and then woke up to the right side of his body being paralyzed. His story of resilience, recovery, and the way he is using his platform to bring hope to his fellow service people and others going through a difficult time is incredible.

On July 25th 2021 Mason Sawyers life would change forever. Because of a sudden dust storm. A horrible crash occurred while Mason's family was returning from a family reunion that he was unable to attend. Mason's wife Kortni, children Riggins and Franki, brother Race, and nephew Ryder were killed. His son Blue survived. The way that Mason has responded to this unspeakable tragedy is inspiring. One of the things that has helped him the most is some of the simple lessons he learned while playing sports. This is an incredible story of resilience that highlights the most valuable reasons we help our children play sports.
Here is an article about the crash:

Today we are going to talk about raising victors instead of victims. When bad or unfortunate events happen the only thing we have control of is our response. When we dwell too much on the unfortunate event instead of the response it leads to bad outcomes. This is very applicable in those car ride discussions on the way home from a tough game.

In this episode we will talk about not being a "Me Monster" when it comes to sports. With NIL's, conference realignments, and professions athletes becoming "The Brand" instead of the teams they play for, self promotion has become more and more a part of sports. When does it cross the line? When does celebrating criss the line? We discuss it with comedian and former college football player Cameron Stewart.

Shad and Dustin discuss a TicTock video that Shad made about a quote in the book, The Traveler’s Gift by Andy Andrews.
Here is the quote: Fear is a poor chisel with which to carve out tomorrow....I do not deny the REALITY of our situation, I deny the FINALITY of it”.
They discuss how fear holds us back from our best selves and how accepting the reality of our situation without accepting the finality of it can help us progress in life. Give it a listen.

A parent wrote in and asked the following:
"I have a child who is a perfectionist, to the point that they experience anxiety. Recently I have seen how sports seem to magnify that problem. I want so badly for them to play sports, but it seems like their perfectionism takes the joy out of it. What tips do you have for a parent of a perfectionist who plays sports?"
We called on the expertise of Doctor Sheldon Martin to answer the question. It was an enlightening discussion. Give it a listen.

At a time when women are being killed in Afghanistan for daring to play sports, are we really going to spend time making fun of Elite Women Athletes who just won an WNBA Championship because not enough people showed up to their parade? Pretty shallow. In this episode we talk with E4A Board Member and former WNBA Player and College Basketball coach Alli Bills about the importance of supporting women's sports. We talk about what men and boys can do to support women and honor their achievements. She also talks about the importance of skill development in today's youth and how to help them find their passion. It was an amazing interview.
