Jane Clifton is a remarkably versatile artist and broadcaster who's established herself as a talented vocalist across multiple genres, including rock, jazz, blues, and cabaret.As an accomplished actor, Clifton is best known for her role as Margo Gafney in the Australian drama "Prisoner." Her early acting career included parts in the cult film "Stork" (1971) and "Pure Shit" (1975), along with numerous television appearances.Clifton's music career began in 1975 when she joined the band Toads, followed by Stiletto. Both groups featured the late Chris Worrall on guitar. Ken Sharp, initially known as a music journalist and power pop historian, expanded his creative output in the '90s by recording his own critically acclaimed albums, cementing his status as an underrated pioneer of the pop underground scene. A Philadelphia native, Sharp had already established himself as a skilled writer and interviewer by the time his 1993 book Overnight Sensation: The Story of the Raspberries earned him recognition as the leading authority on the power pop legends. In 1994, after nearly 15 years of crafting classic power pop songs, Sharp released his debut album 1301 Highland Avenue on the Japanese label M&M. Despite receiving favorable reviews, the album was scarcely available in the U.S., and without the resources to record a follow-up, Sharp returned to journalism. He co-authored books on The Beatles, Kiss, and Cheap Trick, and in 1997, alongside Doug Sulpy, published Power Pop! Conversations with the Power Pop Elite, the first in-depth exploration of the genre's most influential bands, featuring interviews with 28 key groups. Sharp eventually secured a deal with Not Lame, a leading underground pop label, and released his second album Happy Accidents in 2000 to continued critical praise. Since then there have been several singles and albums culminating in the the release of Ken Sharp's 8th album, "Welcome to Toytown," size matters. Jeff Williams is a true gem in Melbourne's vibrant music scene, boasting nearly 40 years of guitar playing and songwriting!He co-founded the influential alt-country band Acuff’s Rose in 1989, featuring talented members like Kaye-Louise Patterson, Jack Coleman, Bruce Kane, Martin Lewis, and Gerard Rohan. Acuff’s Rose played a pivotal role in shaping Melbourne's early music landscape, with standout releases such as the EP Long Past Dawn and albums Never Coming Down and Son of the North Wind.In 1996, Jeff and Kaye took their music to France, promoting their work through live performances and radio appearances. Afterward, Jeff went solo, releasing the acoustic album Clear Space and forming the Clear Spacemen, whose album White Under Green won Australian Album of the Year in 2001.In 2012, Jeff joined Mark Ferrie’s band The Renovators, where they engaged in improvised songwriting, resulting in four limited edition albums.Fast forward to 2024, and Jeff is back on stage with the Jeff Williams Trio. Featuring Jeff on vocals and electric guitar, along with Bruce Kane on drums and Phil Kakulas on double bass, the trio offers an edgier take on Jeff’s extensive musical catalog. Rob Griffiths' favourite song is "Waterloo Sunset" by The Kinks, Dr Gonzo concurs. Similarly, he's a transplanted pommie and passionate music fanatic who has excelled in the music scene. Rob formed legendary Melbourne bands The Fiction and Little Murders, releasing albums and singles on Bruce Milne’s Au Go-Go Records and Mick Baty’s Off The Hip label. These bands quickly became staples of the Melbourne music scene, known for their innovative sound and energetic performances.In addition to his success as a musician, Rob was a successful DJ for many years. He brought his eclectic taste and deep knowledge of music to local club nights, including his own Lizard Lounge, where he became a beloved figure in Melbourne's nightlife. Rob’s musical journey began with his first band, Subway, which played at the same venues as Nick Cave’s group The Boys Next Door in 1977. These early experiences provided a foundation for his later successes and allowed him to witness the evolution of Melbourne's music scene firsthand. Nearly half a century later, Rob Griffiths is still playing and releasing albums with The Fiction and Little Murders, demonstrating his enduring passion and creativity. Sarah Carroll is an Australian singer-songwriter with a 30-year career spanning multiple bands and genres. Known as the "Ukulele Queen of the Bellarine," she's performed at major festivals and venues across Australia.Carroll's album, "NQR&B," is out on Melbourne's Cheersquad Records and Tapes. It showcases her experiences as a teacher, mother, wife, political activist, and touring musician.Her recent projects include a 2021 audio-visual meditation on water called "Ngubitj, Samgooan, Water," and a 2019 album "Medicine" dedicated to her late husband, Chris Wilson.With six trips to the USA under her belt, including an appearance at Americanafest, Carroll continues to blend progressive country, folk, and Americana influences in her music. As guitarist and co-songwriter for 90s indie band The Earthmen, he toured internationally at just 21 and later recorded an ARIA-nominated major-label album. Since 2009, he's also played guitar for Melbourne indie rock favorites Cordrazine.Beyond music, Batterham studied film at VCA and has built a career in film and television scoring, earning two AFI/AACTA award nominations. Ollie Olsen, one of Australia's most innovative experimental musicians, developed an interest in electronic music as a teenager in the mid-1970s, studying under German-born composer Felix Werder.Olsen's diverse career spans from Melbourne's early punk scene with The (Melbourne) Reals, post-punk group Whirlyworld, to acid-house/techno/trance with Third Eye. He co-owned the influential electronic music label Psy-Harmonics and joined the seminal punk band The Young Charlatans, which featured Roland S. Howard's iconic song "Shivers." In 1984, Olsen formed The Orchestra Of Skin And Bone, featuring himself on vocals and guitar, Marie Hoy on keyboards and vocals, and John Murphy on drums. This project evolved into NO, with Olsen, Hoy, Kevin McMahon, and Michael Sheridan.Mid-1980s saw Olsen collaborating with filmmaker Richard Lowenstein as music director for "Dogs In Space," leading to work with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. Their collaboration, Max Q, released a commercially successful album in 1989. Max Q's success enabled Olsen to pursue more experimental projects like Simulated and The Taipan Tiger Girls and cinematic sounding work like Third Eye.In 2009, Olsen was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy, an incurable condition. Powder Monkeys were one of Australia’s classic punk rock groups on par with Rose Tattoo, The Saints, X and Radio Birdman, sadly also a train wreck waiting to happen following the lead of Jimi Hendrix, Sex Pistols and Nirvana.If you were fortunate enough to witness the classic power rock trio Powder Monkeys on a great night with Tim Hemensley, John Nolan, and Timmy Jack Ray, you were treated to a chaotic spectacle where the pure spirit of rock 'n' roll shone through.Powder Monkeys released three studio albums along with numerous live recordings, singles, and EPs on labels like Dogmeat Records, Dropkick, Alive, Death Valley, Bang, and others.Timmy Jack Ray served as the drummer for Powder Monkeys for a decade. He also was a member of Truckhead, Surfin' Poobars, the Roobs, and guested with Spencer P. The Double Agents were a bluesy garage rock band that ignited audiences across Melbourne's pub rock scene from 2000 to 2008. Founded by Dave Butterworth and Myles Gallagher, the band completed several blazing European tours and released albums on legendary labels such as Beast, Infidelity, and Spooky.Throughout their career, they supported numerous incredible bands, including The Dirtbombs, Dead Moon, Detroit Cobras, White Stripes, Celibate Rifles, Kim Salmon & Spencer P. Jones.In 2008, the band amicably disbanded when Dave Butterworth decided to hang up his guitar to focus on spending quality time with his family. Sadly djjuring the COVID-19 lockdowns, Butterworth lost his voice, and a medical check revealed he had throat cancer.This diagnosis served as a wake-up call, prompting him to complete unfinished projects. In 2023, the band reformed playing live, released a compilation album, "Best Bits… So Far," and recorded another album, "New Motion." Melbourne musician, composer and cellist Gareth Skinner has been recording and performing since 1992 as a member of the well loved psychedelic group The Ergot Derivative. Gareth was also a member of prog rock influenced band bZARK and he went on to contribute his music to a variety of film soundtracks including Crackerjack, Tacklehappy and Boytown. In the waning days of summer 2024, Dr. Gonzo strolled along High Street in Northcote, where a vibrant music and family festival was in full swing. Brown was born in Manchester in the U.K. on September 10, just one day before 911, He is an alcoholic and has several degenerative conditions.Singing brutally honest, darkly humorous songs and sounding a bit like a cross between Steve Harley and John Cooper Clarke, maybe a yobbier but unpretentious Nick Cave without the religion.He played some dozen shows all around Australia back in April 2024 with Andy Burns also on the bill. Named after Bob Dylan's song from the Time Out Of Mind album, the name is apt for Cold Irons Bound, a four piece band from Melbourne who specialise in Americana influenced alternative tunings crossed with the heart of a scruffy rock n roll bar band.Their songs recall the some of the best distorted twang of the last 50 years, sounding not unlike Tom Petty jamming with Teenage Fanclub. With an emphasis on collaboration, Andrew thrives within multidisciplinary production environments bringing a broad range of skills to projects that have seen him work across Australia, Southeast Asia, Indo-China, South Asia and Central Europe.A visionary, Andrew co-created the Pegasus Networks, the earliest community-focussed national internet provider in Australia that went online in 1989.In 1995 he co-founded the artist-led production house Toy Satellite producing cutting edge online interactives in Austria, South Korea, and Taiwan. In 2012 Andrew returned to filmmaking, writing and directing and in 2017 he launched his first feature film, Ocean In A Drop - broadband impacts rural India at the Chennai International Film Festival with the support of the Australian High Commission. Melbourne artist Dan Brodie comes from a musical family, his Dad played guitar and sang in the nascent 60’s rock n roll scene and passed on some guitar licks. With his brother Chris Brodie (Dallas Crane) they began playing in bands together honing their skills of playing live to audiences around the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne before landing their first pub show whilst still in their early teens at the Richmond Club Hotel in 1990.Since then Dan Brodie has released numerous albums, singles, live recordings and EPs through Laughing Outlaw and EMI, receiving 2 ARIA nominations for the Empty Arms Broken Hearts album in 2002.Recorded during the covid lockdown 'The Ballad of Cowboy Dan' is a welcome arrival in Brodie's oeuvre, capturing a place and time of isolation, storytelling and imagination over ten lovingly crafted new tracks, showcasing the musical influences which have shaped the songwriter's world to date. Dr. Gonzo's arrival from another planet coincided with the mid-1970s, and he found himself at the Beverly Crest, a dive bar near his fleabag lodgings in salubrious St. Kilda. It was there that he witnessed Sydney band Radio Birdman take the stage, and in that moment, they were the greatest band in the world. The experience was nothing short of religious, forever altering his perspective.One of the standout members of Radio Birdman was Chris ‘Klondike' Masuak, whose guitar playing was nothing short of incendiary. Since then, he has lent his exceptional sound to some of the most beloved hard rocking outfits, including The New Christs, The Hitmen, and The Screaming Tribesmen.Chris remains active in the music scene, contributing his remarkable guitar skills and vocals to various groups in Australia and abroad. Fiona Lee Maynard is an enigmatic and prolific singer songwriter. A multi genre music enthusiast, and generous collaborator.Writing and recording her first 60’s and Sunnyboys influenced pop song; Just Like Me for a school Drama project when she was 15 years old.She's just released Junction an album written and recorded with her husband James while waiting for a kidney transplant for him. Singer and bass guitarist Fiona Lee Maynard and lead guitar playing husband James Lomas have always shared a special bond with their music but a recent event saw them take their relationship even higher. Fiona, once described by music critic Jeff Jenkins as one of Melbourne’s greatest rock chicks'' gave her left kidney to husband, James on July 27, 2023. The formidable female rocker and frontwoman for bands Have A Nice Day and In Vivo explained "James had sudden onset kidney failure in late January 2021 when a rare auto immune condition was triggered out of the blue and destroyed his kidneys in 10 days. The following January 2022 he was activated on the deceased donor transplant waiting list about 11 months after the visit to the emergency at Monash.""All up, James was on dialysis for 2 and a half years, waiting for a deceased donor kidney and having a hard time maintaining social connections, worse of all he couldn't perform music.". In November 2022, when things were looking bleak he agreed to accept his wife’s loving donation when it was discovered she was compatible with him and the Transplant Team at Monash Hospital immediately sprung into action. Not surprisingly since his wife’s amazing gift James’ health and quality of life has dramatically improved and they’ve both recovered well from the surgery. One bonus side effect from their experience is ‘Junction' the album of acoustic songs that they worked on together while waiting for their operation. Jamie Hutchings is a prolific and creative musician who’s musical journey was established with noisy indie-rock auteurs Bluebottle Kiss in the early 1990’s. In 2002 he embarked on a solo career with the release of The Golden Coach album. If that wasn’t enough to satiate his musical curiosities, Hutchings formed another group Infinity Broke who in 2014 released the first of 3 albums. These albums demonstrated a firm grasp of angular guitar rock with a large dose of inventive and repetitive rhythms and percussion. In 2023 Jamie Hutchings released his most experimental solo album, Making Water, encompassing a collage of rhythm, noise, drone and abstraction. The music on the album explored free jazz, Krautrock and explored a similar musical universe as The Necks and late period Talk Talk.Now Jamie’s back with his 6th solo album A New returning to a more traditional sound which he says is mostly about turning over a new leaf. With musical guests that include Clare Moore on vibraphone and Jamie’s Father Lee adding tenor sax on a couple of numbers, A New encapsulates all the different strands of Jamie’s musical past. Black Pumas are a psychedelic soul band from Austin, Texas. Singer / Songwriter Eric Burton & Adrian Quesada the group’s guitarist and producer released their premier self titled album in 2019. Quesada played in Latin funk outfit Grupo Fantasama that won the Grammy award for best Latin rock, Urban or alternative album for the 2010 album El Existential.Eric Burton was heavily involved in musical theatre and started busking at the San Monica pier bringing in several hundred dollars a day and developing his performance skills.After releasing the first album they were asked to play at South By Southwest and won a best new band trophy at the Austin music awards. Dr Gonzo first met Orryelle Defenestrate-Bascule in 2005, if my memory is correct. We were driving to St Andrews in our new VW Beetle on a hot night with the roof down.A hitchhiker, a flamboyant looking man wearing robes and no shoes appeared on the road. He told us his name was Orryelle as we sped a few kilometres to St. Andrews.Orryelle is a visual performance artist working in the world of the esoteric and avantgarde with skin art, film, writing and painting. Mark Moldre is a singer/songwriter from Northern NSW who fronted 4 piece Hitchcock’s Regret for 7 years before recording his first solo album in 2009 The Waiting Room under the guiding influence of Tim Powles from the Church and Michael Carpenter and Jim Moginie of Midnight Oil. Victor Stranges is a Melbourne musician who’s roots are in the punk scene drumming in the late ’80’s in underground punk group Drunk ’n’ Disorderly a band that were influenced by The Clash & Stiff Little Fingers and gained a reputation supporting bands like Weddings Parties Anything and The Johnnys. David Thrussell is a poet trapped in the body of a hillbilly, a hopeless romantic hidden in the twisted frame of a dark electronic musician. Late at night, Thrussell fantasises that he actually lives next door to Hieronymous Bosch in medieval Europe, and hallucinated the whole dreadful modern era while suffering from acute ergot poisoning. We're not entirely convinced that this is not the case. Mr Thrussell is also a philosopher who’s comments are insightful and illuminating. ‘Legs’ Larry Smith is a musical legend in The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, a band that influenced my woe begotten teenage years and blew my mind in 1968 with the Paul McCartney produced single I’m the urban spaceman.Some people thought that The Bonzo’s were an English version of Frank Zappa’s Mothers Of Invention, amazing satirical songs influenced by Victorian music hall jazz.Originally invited by Vivian Stanshall to join The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band as a tuba player and tap dancer. ‘Legs’ soon became the band’s drummer contributing his unique style and talents.The Bonzo’s became a cult hit with fans including legendary DJ John Peel and the Beatles appearing in their zany 1967 TV show ‘The Magical Mystery Tour’. ‘Legs’ Larry Smith is one of the few still living members of the Bonzo’s and has gone on to work as a painter, actor and recording artist. Cam Butler is a Melbourne composer, guitarist and producer who has been a long-time creative force on the Australian live and recording scene. He has released ten solo instrumental albums which vary in style from guitar and synthetic soundscapes, to works with string ensembles both large and small. Eugene Chadbourne has long been a hero of Dr Gonzo with his dada and psychedelic influenced music. He started out playing rock and roll guitar, but quickly growing bored with the form's conventions. He began studying other genres, including blues, country, bluegrass, free jazz, and noise - eventually synthesizing all those diverse influences into a unique style of his own and influenced early on by the experimental stylings of Captain Beefheart and the Mothers of Invention.With a mind boggling collection of releases Eugene Chadbourne has been composing, performing, and writing about music since at least 1975. Among his innovations are creating a musical instrument from a garden rake and arranging for and performing Bach, Captain Beefheart, and Frank Zappa compositions on the banjo.He's collaborated with an astounding number of artists over the years, including Camper Van Beethoven, John Zorn, Henry Kaiser, and Jimmy Carl Black. In addition to his solo efforts and collaborations, he also led the band Shockabilly in the 1980s.Eugene makes a rare visit to Australia touring in October 2023 including dates in Footscray, Alice Springs, Coober Pedy and Chewton. Kiwi expat Wayne Gillespie has been making quality music in New Zealand and Australia since his first album Wayward Son in 1984 followed by his second, New locations in 1987 and released by CBS records.Now based in Sydney he’d released the third album Living In Exile that was recorded with a local community of Australasian musicians such as Dave Dobyn, Margaret Urlich, Amanda Brown (Go-Betweens) and Dave Sparks (Saints). Musician David Bridie is something of a national treasure, founding Melbourne ambient world music group not drowning waving in 1983 with John Phillips. The group went on to release six studio albums and two soundtracks until disbanding eleven years later, before reforming four times and releasing three compilation albums. In 1991 David Bridie and fellow Not Drowning Waving band members formed My Friend The Chocolate cake to play more acoustic-based material and went on to release seven studio albums, and numerous live and compilation collections. Since then there've been many solo albums and live performances. One of david's attributes is his curiosity in exploring different cultures for inspiration, including rabaul in papua new guinea, collaborating with local artists and returning to PNG to play concerts including the capital Port Moresby, to an audience of 25,000. John played bass guitar in many bands in Sydney before moving to Melbourne in the mid 70’s with Uncle Bob Band.The band broke up and John kept busy producing artwork for Laurence J Richards venue The Tiger Lounge in Richmond before joining The Secret Police that morphed into Little Heroes that had a big hit called One Perfect Day in 1982.The talented John CJ Taylor studied animation at the Swinbourne Film & Television School and began a creative career as an animator, illustrator and TAFE film school lecturer. Donovan's Brain are a band brought into existence by Ron Sanchez in the early 1990's as part of an American recording workshop in Montana. A music collective founded in the mid '80's with the philosophy that "anyone can start a band", Donovan’s Brain first entered your consciousness in 1994 when they appeared on the premier edition of the Swedish Hit The Hay compilations. The current recording group is staffed by Ron, Scott Sutherland and Kris Wilkinson-Hughes. Loki Lockwood's Velatine project has come to fruition with the addition of chanteuse Maggie Alley on vocals and the release of the brilliant dark but self-assured album I Won't Be Civilised. Loki is a self-proclaimed lifer of the Australian music scene, since he graduated in music from Box Hill Tech he's played in bands, playing in dives like the Seaview Ballroom the P.O.W. in St Kilda.Loki became an accomplished live and studio engineer and was mentored by the legendary Tony Cohen. Jo Meares latest album Dream Hotel is a beautiful melancholy atmospheric collection of songs, poetry set to music and interesting sounds. it's a synthesised, bleak, but glorious terrain, a spiritual album that sounds like a fictitious David Lynch soundtrackfeaturing a cosmic collaboration between Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, Lambchop and Leonard Cohen.A humble man Jo Meers doesn't talk about his musical past, though I get the impression that he's been a musician for a long time. Dan Warner is another Melbourne musician with talent to spare, an artist who deserves to receive more than his pay grade rather than having to work outside the music industry to pay the rent. Having said that, Dan Warner has gifted us many great songs for us to hear and admire. Starting with early '90's band The Warner Brothers, the band had some success releasing albums and gaining support gigs with Sheryl Crow and Michelle Shocked.They were sued by the giant multinational conglomerate Warner Bros inc and forced to change their name to Overnite Jones. After the band split, Dan played with Paul Hester's post Crowded House combo, The Largest Living Things and lived in NYC for 2 years. Playing with fellow guitarist Al Macinnes as Dan & Al the duo held down long residences at several Melbourne venues including 8 years at legendary music palace The Punters Club on Sunday arvos.Dan Warner was a recognisable voice on 3RRR radio for 20 years with his segment Warner Corner on Johnnie Von Goes Sunday afternoon show.Dan released his 4th solo album at the end of 2022 with his band The Night Parrots titled Maybe, then... Ian Stephen has released some 27 albums and EPs between 1979 and 2020.Who is Ian Stephen you might ask, well I remember seeing his first release a 4 track EP on Reverse records called Ian Stephen's Schizophrenia - I'm in two minds about the title, in the Archie & Jugheads record shop. The cover art looked interesting, so I plumped down the $2 payment and took it home.After listening to the EP on both sides I realised that it wasn't punk music, it didn't even sound like new wave, perhaps it was Australian Americana Lounge rock music. I gave it a spin on my radio show on 3PBS and I still own the record.The next Ian Stephen release saw him team up with Melbourne's beatnik convenor Johnny Topper in satirical dada combo The Armchairs. Another 4-track EP on Ian's Reverse records titled Ski Lo Lo contained funny baffling tunes Cat in a box, Elvis Presley, Brian Henderson and Dining Room. These songs interested me and appealed to my sense of the absurd. Then came a LP that came with a free balloon by The Armchairs called Party Time with 7 gently satirical songs including a 20 minute version of La Bomba that was a hit by Richie Valens in 1958 as La Bamba. A couple years later in 1984 Ian Stephens was playing in The Slaughtermen described on Wikipedia as a post-punk alternative southern gospel group. The other musicians in the group included future Models Bass player Mark Ferrie, Andrew Pendlebury guitarist from The Sports, ex-Birthday Party drummer Des Hefner, and Johnny Crash and Terry Doolan from the Sacred CowboysThe Slaughtermen became a fixture in the live scene releasing 4 albums between 1986 & 1995. They got back together for performances several times and released a final album Temptation in 2007.Ian Stephens now lives in New York and continues to release music, he joins Dr Gonzo to present a selection of his more recent music on And This One's Introduced By... Australian-born Penny Ikinger is a world renowned guitar ace, singer and songwriter, with an international reputation for her solo work starting out as a member of The Wet Taxis, collaborating with keyboard legend Louis Tillett, supporting Nico on her Australian tour in 1986. Playwright Bill Marshall founded the Festival Of Surrealisms back in 1978 to help escape a mind-numbing boring job in the Tax Office, in 1978. The 4th Festival was in 1981 at what was then called the Australian Nouveau Theatre, better known as Anthill. The Seventh Festival sees a return to its roots, with Temperance Hall being the same location as the original Anthill’s Napier Street address. Under the guidance of artistic director Jean-Pierre Mignon, Anthill staged many avant-garde theatrical productions by writers such as Paul Adkin and Alex Miller.Compered by Captain W.N. When Dave settled in Freo he joined the multi award winning Celtic Powerhouse Band The Fling, who went on to record two albums and perform at all the major folk festivals in Australia and Europe. Back in Freo again Dave took a bit of a back step from gigging and touring, working in several jobs including teaching music at a Juvenile Detention Centre to some of the most troubled and traumatised kids in the state.It was during this experience that the germination for Dave's 3rd solo album Inequality Blvd arose.As the name suggests the album is a stark critique of the morally devoid, politically polarising, policy gridlock induced by vested interests, market forces and short term politic that is gripping most of the modern world. The album is tender and brimming with characters who are struggling to stay afloat in an increasingly, blindly narcissistic and dangerous world. I must admit to my lack of knowledge about Melbourne musician Simon Juliff who's just released his first solo album Stars. Simon shuffled around the local indie music scene in early 2000 when he and his brother felix played in a band called The Roys who played around the pubs and released an EP on in-fidelity records owned by Bruce Milne of Au-Go-Go records fame. Bruce wasn't the band's only fan, long-time Paul Kelly drummer Peter Luscombe produced the Roys' records. Earlier on in the late '80s Simon Juliff was part of a short lived band the Evil Dead who only played live a couple of times and recorded a single that was never released. The Evil Dead shared members with the Powder Monkeys and Hoss, two revered Melbourne underground rock groups who'd formed out of the much-mythologised earlier group God, of My Pal fame. Simon had gone to school with Tim Hemensley from God/ & Powder Monkeys and Sean Greenaway of God & Yes Men, and he was good friends with Joel Silbersher, from God and Hoss. It was joel who produced and played on the Evil Dead's unreleased single (just an idiot/life is like a reefer) and it was Dog Meat records that was meant to release it. And now, over thirty years later, joel has produced and played on Simon Juliffs first solo record, and Dave Laing's newly restarted Dog Meat is releasing it. With a sound somewhere between T. Rex and Big Star, Simon Juliff's album Stars is an excellent collection and certainly worthy of your listening pleasure. Les Thomas is a country-folk and Americana singer-songwriter and storyteller from naarm/melbourne who draws inspiration from the likes of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Steve Earle as well as local legends like Archie Roach, Kev Carmody and Paul Kelly. Coming from a diverse family background, and with decades of grassroots activism as a unionist and social justice advocate, Les has strong connections to 3CR and a number of its shows. His music has always been in solidarity with the oppressed, refugees, migrants, dispossessed, socially excluded and marginalised peoples and a good proportion of his live performances have been at rallies, picket lines and on the back of trucks at protests. Les also has a foot planted in the broader world of music and roots music in particular, especially alt country, folk and what gets called americana. For les, this kind of music provides an excellent vehicle for sharing stories. Peter Farnan introduced the tracks from his album Pesky Bones volume one on and this one's introduced by... Nearly 2 years ago and available to stream from the 3cr website. The album a collection of songs dealing with accumulated experience, memory, age, sex, family, mortality, aching limbs, regret, transcendence and raging against the dying light. Peter wrote the songs and utilised some of australia's greatest vocalisers including Paul Kelly, Deborah Conway, Charles Jenkins, Tim Rogers and Ali Barter to sing the lead vocals on a different track each. Dr Gonzo first met John Derr playing in St Kilda cult band The Editions that featured Fred Negro on drums.A constant visitor to the band's share house mansion in Acland Street even recording oneof their cassette albums from an old 3 ton truck with wires coming from the house and across the pavement tothe mobile recording studio.He also interviewed John and the rest of the band on the Radio Pop program on 3PBS radio when the studio was housedover the road from the group's house at the Prince Of Wales Hotel.John Derr's musical style was particularly influenced by Kiss and he insisted that the Editions attend a concert bythe group when they played Melbourne.Gonzo also enjoyed conversations with John about his love of Tamla Motown and soul music.Nearly 4 decades later after a long career recording and releasing blues artists John Derr has finallyreleased his first solo album, recorded during covid lockdown.The album Fading Rainbow Blues is a mix of John's original songs and interpretations of some of his favouritefolk blues tracks. The preparation for this particular episode of 'And This One's Introduced By...' is rather spooky, Garry Gray recently visited Dr Gonzo's podcast studio to record song introductions for 'We Mainline Dreamers' the new album by Garry Gray and Edward Clayton-Jones. Alas disaster struck as the Doctor's computer inexplicably crashed and 3 introductions disappeared into the either.Released on Loki Lockwood's Spooky records, Garry returned to record the introductions again, and the new recordings were saved. The next day the nefarious Mac spinning wheel of death appeared and a 'force quit program' command was initiated. Upon reopening the particular audio editing application, Garry's 3 new song introductions were gone and it seemed like the ghosts in the machine were trying to tell us something.Garry Gray and Ed Clayton-Jones have both built up impressive musical histories , Gary notably as vocalist with The Negatives, The Sacred Cowboys and The Sixth Circle, while Ed played in The Wreckery, The Bad Seeds and many other groups. The pair of musicians are the sum of their musical experiences and cultural background. Ed & Garry have combined their talent to record 'We Mainline Dreamers' a record that could be called a 'Concept Album' that Garry describes as an album constructed in the classic sense, an album that takes the listener on a journey.A series of observations arranged to produce a range of thoughts, feelings and emotions. More precisely, it’s a psychological realism which delves into the "inner person" of a character's mind and motivation rather than focusing on external actions or motivators. John Dowler's first band Spare Change arrived in 1976 with a single The Big Beat on Champagne Records and an album Lonely Suits 3 years later. Next band Young Modern formed in 1977, the first single "She's got the money" produced by John's friend Stephen Cummings of the Sports. The song received significant airplay on community radio, but "Young Modern" didn't achieve the success many thought they would and broke up 2 years later.John Dowler went on to form The Zimmermen that featured Steve Connolly on guitar before Steve joined Paul Kelly's Coloured Girls in 1983. The Zimmermen released 2 albums, Rivers Of Corn on Au Go Go and Way too casual on Mushroom records. Punk rock legend Steve Lucas has a new band and a new album out. But it might not be what you expect. Then, Steve Lucas has never been what you’d call predictable. Steve Lucas is well known to music lovers as the last surviving founding member of Australia's infamous, and much-loved punk rock band X. That band’s debut album X-Aspirations has been deemed a classic by countless experts of both the armchair and professional variety, and is consistently listed in the Top 100 most important Australian recordings and ‘records you must hear before you die’ type lists. It’s a legacy that Lucas has fiercely maintained since co-founder Ian Rilen lost his battle with cancer. Duly described as a national treasure, a living legend, or the elderly statesman of rock, Lucas is a staunch believer in the independent music scene. He has lived it, breathed it, nurtured it and sweated it for the last 45 years. As well as X, Lucas has fronted Double Cross, Groovy Frenzy, Bigger Than Jesus, A. R. M., and more. His legendary voice saw him offered the opportunity to sing for Sweet during an Australian tour, an offer he turned down.Lucas has also always pushed the boundaries and defied expectations. He pushed for Cathy Green to join X – declaring he’d quit otherwise. Later he would do the same for Cath Synnerdahl, a full transsexual, decades before such support became widespread and these days, expected. "It's simply about the right person for the right job. Sex or gender has nothing to do with it." Originally available only on limited edition vinyl and digitally, the CD format has just been added to the mix – with a new track listing, deemed a better fit for the technology. While Gil Mathews was mastering it, he rang Steve and told him the track listing wasn’t ideal for a CD. Steve replied he wasn’t planning on releasing it on CD. Gil’s reply was ‘that he was’ and a deal was done. Doc is also known as Ivor Biggun writer and singer of risqué songs, including a RuDE one about a Filthy Habit long ago in a galaxy far away, a record that stormed the top twenty charts helped a bit by DJ John Peel who played it at music festivals every time the generators broke down and the stage, or Hawkwind collapsed.The song he played was Ivor Biggun's "The Winker's Song (misprint) , other DJ's featured it and low and behold began to sell in frightening quantities, it ended up at number 12 in the UK pop charts in 1978 which Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten picked as his single of the week as guest reviewer in the New Musical Express.Recently announced is the Complete Works Of Ivor Biggun, a 5-CD Set including the Winker's Album, Handling Swollen Goods, More Filth! Cam Butler is a Melbourne-based composer, guitarist and producer who has been active for over twenty-five years in the Australian live and recording scene. Cam has developed a recognisable guitar and compositional sound that puts individuality and experimentation at its heart. He has released nine solo, instrumental albums which vary from guitar and synthetic soundscapes to works with string ensembles, both large and small. Cam has created a unique and genre-blending compositional approach; combining electric guitar and modern, classical string sections into a rich and sometimes otherworldly sound. This sound is primarily tonal, with a cinematic expression and sweeping melodies full of depth and emotion. He currently collaborates with the legendary vocalist, Ron S. Peno, performing and recording with the band, Ron S. Peno & The Superstitions. Since 2011, The Superstitions have released four albums and played extensively in Melbourne as well as touring France, Italy and Spain. Their albums 'Future Universe' (2011) and 'Guiding Light' (2017) were both long-listed for the Australian Music Prize.His latest album 'Solar', is his 9th album through Melbourne label, Kasumuen Records and the most up-to-date work in this vein. He say's that he chose the name 'Solar' as it's a grand title with many connotations - the sun, solar power, a positive life force. The album is built around one main musical theme that re-occurs throughout the record. This theme is developed and presented in various musical settings across the album's eight tracks. These tracks range in sound from lush, synthetic soundscapes to live pieces featuring a string quartet and also a fourteen-piece string orchestra, combined with electric guitar, bass and percussion. Jack Howard's extensive and exemplary musical career probably took off in 1981 when he joined Melbourne art/funk pub/rock group Hunters & Collectors.Jack's horn playing has also graced numerous recordings by other artists and playing live with many bands including The Violent Femmes and The Living End and for the past 15 years he's been releasing his own highly regarded albums.Jack Howard has introduced 2 of those albums on And This One's Introduced By... Dog Songs a companion album to Jack's biography Small Moments Of Glory was a best of collection of songs played at the Dog's Bar in St KIlda where Jack and his band The Long Lost Brothers played a residency for over 4 years. Mick & Ursula are musical duo Mick Medew and Ursula Collie.Mick Medew gained success as vocalist and guitarist in the Brisbane band The Screaming Tribesmen releasing 3 studio albums and numerous eps and singles including the acclaimed Igloo single on Citadel records in 1983. I'd wandered into Shotkickers, the venue in High St in Melbourne's inner suburb of Thornbury to see the excellent Skyscraper Stan & The Commission Flats.The band on stage was Dirt Hand the first band playing before the main act and after I grabbed a beer and watched them play I realised that here was something special and Skyscraper Stan had chosen a great band to play with them.The giant of a singer Arun with baritone vocals sported a bushy beard and moved his body on stage like a dancer, channeling the music and the band seemed to be improvising much of the time.Dirt Hand is a collaborative music platform curated by Arun Roberts. Initially, Arun just wanted to get away from the metronome. He took that desire and turned it into an arrangement and performance aesthetic that would become the Dirt Hand EP. Then he encountered the canons of Steve Reich so he drew up several sets of his own such canons and locked them in a studio with 4 of his songs and a 9-piece jazz band. The result was packaged as a record bearing the name “The Thorn Variations” but in truth that name more accurately describes a process than it does a work. As a process “The Thorn Variations” has been successfully performed by various ensemble types and has been described as “an inspired and fully textured tentative tightrope for Roberts’ deep growling storytelling” and “one of those golden bullets of ratification for the extraordinary”.Keep an eye out for Dirt Hand and check them out if you can, Arun Roberts from Dirt Hand is here with Dr Gonzo to introduce his music on And This One's Introduced By... Earlier in 2022 Paulie Stewart invited me to George Lane Bar for the launch of the Unplugged In St Kilda podcast presented by Sally Moore. As part of the entertainment, Matt Thomas who was billed as Matt Doll performed an acoustic set and I was impressed by the intensity & exuberance of his performance. Matt readily agreed to record introductions to his songs from his career that encompasses several musical styles.Matt Thomas formed his first band The Mavis’s in Ballarat with his sister Beki as young teenagers in 1987. They went on to sign to Mushroom records in the 90s with 4 ARIA nominations and winning two APRA awards. The Huxton Creepers were the first of a new generation of punchy power pop and '60s-inspired rock'n'roll guitar bands in Melbourne in the early ‘80s; our own version of the Sunnyboys and the Hoodoo Gurus. United by a love of The Saints, The Flamin’ Groovies, Iggy Pop, Radio Birdman, Blondie, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the like – all of whom they memorably covered at different points in their career - the Creepers won a generation of fans on the back of their always rocking live performances and some great records. Franklin’s Mint is an ongoing solo, song-writing project of Philip Franklin, starting in 2004 with the release of “GOLD”, and working with other talented people over the years. Philip started playing in the early 1980's in hard core bands at CBGB's and other punk venues, gaining a fine arts degree from the State University Of New York, he also played in various college bands.In the 90's he moved to San Francisco, toured the USA, Japan and Australia with twisted death-metal band Faxed Head featuring Trey Spruance from Mr Bungle and Gregg Turkington aka Neil Hamburger.In 1998 Philip joined Mr Bungle members as Secret Chiefs 3 making their television debut during that tour, on the Saturday morning music show, Recovery. Memories is the debut album by Melbourne Female Mariachi Band Queen Of Hearts who are made up of three primary composers: Stefania Serna, Elizabeth Obando and Bonnie Smith.Stefania and Elizabeth are Colombian born and have been brought up on Mariachi music since they were born. Bonnie is Australian-born, she has traveled far and wide and has spent a huge part of her life in Latin America, including Mexico where she learned to speak Spanish. She played many concerts in Mexico and has traveled from Jalisco to Veracruz to Chiapas to Morelia soaking up the music and culture.These ladies met in Melbourne and their one thing in common is their passion for Mariachi music. Not only does Mariachi music give them a platform in which to compose; but it gives them a platform in which they can express their deepest feelings, sufferings, and desires. Nikodimos, the 23-year-old Greek-Australian is a multi-instrumentalist from Melbourne and saxophone player of Proto Moro. Nikodimos’ 2nd album, “The Nikodimos World,” takes listeners on a journey through jazz, soul, and hip-hop rhythms.The album features guest spots from over 20 up-and-coming artists was entirely produced and recorded by Nikodimos, and every instrument (excluding featured instrumentalists) was played by the artist. Pepe Deluxé is not to be confused with PEPEDELUXE, who is a hair artist in Switzerland. Pepe Deluxé were born in Finland in 1995 as Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop and Big Beat sound collage exponents who've since grown to adolescence and broadened their sound to include Neo-Psychedelia, Art and Baroque Pop. The band's 5 albums are masterful collages of beautiful sounds for your ears, the latest Phantom Cabinet Vol. 1 took 9 years to assemble. The Cambodian Space Project is a wonderful bitter sweet story about Tasmanian guitarist and producer Julian Poulson meeting a beautiful young Cambodian waitress Channthy Kak who was singing in a Phnom Penh karaoke bar.The couple formed a band, married, and for six years toured bars, rock festivals and theatres across Asia, Europe and Australia as The Cambodian Space Project, one of the few truly Aussie Asian hybrids in contemporary music who recorded and released 5 albums and 4 singles.To understand the importance of the live shows, and their context, we have to go back to April 17th 1975: the day Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge seized power in Cambodia. As Poulson says, they “ripped out the heart and soul of Cambodian culture. Their very ill-conceived manifesto was a kind of fucked-up Maoist thing, to return society to agrarian utopia, which meant destroying and dismantling culture. The Khmer Rouge very successfully destroyed everything, along with almost two million Cambodian lives.”The band was the subject of a feature length film Not Easy Rock’n’Roll, which premiered at Sydney Film Festival 2015 and screened to a massive television audience.Sadly Channthy died on March 18 2018 at the age of 38 when the auto rickshaw she was traveling in was hit by a car. The Idle Hoes were a great sounding alt-country, rock-folk band who released 2 albums and an EP.The Overflow EP in 2005, Little Victories in 2007 and Tomorrow morning in 2012. The band found inspiration in artists ranging from Bob Dylan to John Williamson and whose lyrics traverse cultural icons from hemispheres north and south, from North Melbourne to the Netherlands, from hip hop to Willie Nelson. The following history of Ron Rude comes from the Punk Journey website. punkjourney.com a web site set up by Melinda Von Waywood who's aim is to research, document, preserve and digitally showcase the history of the Melbourne punk scene from the years 1977-1987, as well as celebrate and promote Australian punk subculture through recognition of the contribution that it's made to historical and contemporary cultural heritage.Back in 1979 Ron Rude knew that he didn't stand a chance of landing a record deal, so he turned his Belgrave home into a budget recording studio, lined the walls with egg cartons from the poultry farm next door, and recorded an album, 'The Borders of Disgrace', which he put out on his own label 'Unforgettable Music'. He made news by being the first artist to finance a commercial release using a $1000 cash advance courtesy of his guitar player, Stephen Clarke's credit card.In 1980 Rude, this time with his own credit card and band Piano Piano made another album at home, 'The Vorpal Blade'. To promote it he went on a hunger strike in the window of Missing Link, an alternative record shop run at the time by Archie and Jugheads records founder Keith Glass, and making news, he demanded that local radio station 3XY play his records, threatening to drown himself in a bucket of water if they did not. His slogan, "3XY or I Die" was intended to show that the major mainstream rock station of the day would be unlikely to give a small-time independent artist a go. TV Channel 10 covered the story, and Rude had the momentum that he wanted. His next move was to make good a threat to drown himself on Hans Christian and Barry Bissel's morning 3XY program. The DJ's relented, and played excerpts of the album as Rude bubbled away with his head in a bucket of water.Buoyed by this minor victory, Rude took on ABC TV's Countdown host, Ian "Molly" Meldrum, chaining himself to Meldrum's fence to try to gain a spot on the show. Meldrum acted swiftly, absconding before the TV news crews arrived. Rude's live debut was a masterpiece of comic punk showmanship. Supporting a well-attended conventional rock band, Rude took to the stage clad in greasepaint and leather and charged into the audience playing echo driven guitar solos, and singing "Violence! It's the only way!" His other guitar player, Geoff Martin, played guitar with his teeth, a la Hendrix style, but without the tunes, and the drummer, clad in full Darth Vader regalia eventually knocked over all the drums because the mask obscured his vision. Three amply endowed girl backup singers called The Fanny's bounced their breasts in time to the music, to roars of applause by those in the audience who would be moved by such a spectacle.To this day Ron Rude is is considered to be a pioneer of DIY (Do it Yourself) recording and in 2001 Melbourne playwright Kieran Carroll wrote a play called 3XY or I Die which tells the story of Rude's hunger strike. Ron has recently completed a double album Morphio/The Universes, recorded at his home studio in the Dandenong's a glorious collection of beautiful melodies and Ron's unique singing style for release later in 2022. The Bone Folders are a six-piece Melbourne band who describe themselves as “poetic pub rockers”, with influences ranging from power pop to country, classic rock to psychedelia, garage punk to jangly folk pop — but with a strong emphasis on expressive lyrics.Singer/songwriter/guitarist Ian D. Marks began playing music in the late 1980s, first in the ‘60s garage-influenced band Too Much Hair For the BBC and later in the more glam-rock orientated Feline Touch (who put out a couple of singles on the legendary PolyEster record label, before disbanding in 1991). Marks later turned his pen to writing about music instead, providing liner notes for several compilation CDs about Australian music of the 1960s and co-authoring a couple of books on the very same subject.In early 2015 he met Scott Boydle (drummer with folk/alt- country band Taylor Project) and the pair formed the Bone Folders, as a two-piece guitar and drums outfit, and they soon became quite active on the inner-northern suburbs live circuit.After three-and-a-half years as a duo, and having released two EPs and the full-length album Automatic Charm, they finally became a proper band collective with the addition of bassist Stephen Tighe and backing vocalist Holly Ellis.In 2019, a second member of Taylor Project — lap steel guitarist and banjo-player Andrew Bonnici —joined the group, and the Bone Folders’ line-up was eventually consolidated with addition of rhythm guitarist Stefan Lafebre.As with everybody else, the COVID-19 pandemic created chaos for the band and its label New Falconer Records, which was just beginning to flourish with some new names added to its roster. A Bone Folders/Taylor Project split vinyl single had its live launch cancelled within the second week of Melbourne’s very first lockdown and likewise, the Bone Folders were forced to quietly release their second album Too Many Angels and Not Enough Sky without any live fanfare. Charles Jenkins was a member of Adelaide band The Mad Turks from Istanbul and sung on their debut album Cafe Istanbul released in 1984 on Greasy Pop Records. In 1989 the band moved to Melbourne and disbanded two years later with Charles and drummer Dominic Larizza forming The Ice cream Hands the name of the group taken from a Robyn Hitchcock lyric.Ice Cream Hands released a bunch of terrific albums while Charles released solo albums and several releases credited to Charles Jenkins and the Zhivagos. Charles Jenkins is a songwriter / musician, producer & performer with more than 30 years experience in the Australian Music Industry and toured Europe and the USA several times.He's been nominated for two ARIA awards and in 2014 he won the AGE/Music Victoria award for best folk/roots album. The Bran Flakes specialise in creating entertaining sound collages from pre-existing sources with members in the United States and Canada. The group's members are Otis Fodder (in Montreal, Quebec) and Mildred Pitt (in Seattle, Washington). They are prolific, gifted assemblers of funky, twisted audio montages that unfurl like dreams, disconnected yet also pieces of a whole sound.The Bran Flakes have released 7 albums between 1998 & 2017, titled i remember when I break down, Hey won't somebody come and play?, I don't have a friend, Bounces!, Bubbles, I have hands, and Help me. Melbourne-based singer and songwriter Ben Mastwyk talking to journalist Stuart Coupe told him that he likes a bit of glitz when asked about the stylish gold lame suit he's wearing (whilst atop a pretty fine looking horse) on the cover of his album, Livin On Gold Street, and the equally classy looking photo of his band the Millions on the back cover."We're looking back to the golden era of country music showmanship," continues Ben. "So the band are all in rhinestones and I'm in a gold suit. Greg Wadley's been involved in indie music since the 1980s. He's played in about 20 bands, produced compilations, and recorded or mastered 350 releases by other musicians. Naturally I don't believe a word I read on Wikipedia, and on a youtube channel I found on the internet : Damian was actually back-up tambourine player with the Uncanny X-men.For several years they played every toilet and dive up and down the East Coast while Damian would try to persuade Brian to record the avant guard material he was writing while on the road.Little Brian was having none of it though and continually reminded Damian that his songs wouldn't get the girls and they sounded suspiciously like old jazz music.Eventually there was a massive fight on stage at the Toowoomba RSL and Damian threw his electric tambourine at Brian's head , stormed off the stage and caught the train back to Melbourne.Once there he bought a one way ticket to San Francisco to find himself.He was looking in a supermarket at the frozen peas refrigeration unit and found himself in conversation with a roadie who worked for Frank Zappa who invited him to a 'happening' at the Zappa mansion high in the Hollywood hills meeting many leading musicians, film stars and assorted freaks and innovators including Brian Wilson, Dennis Hopper and Charles Manson.One event at that notorious party that forever changed Damian's view of reality was participating in a peyote shamanistic sex ritual with Timothy Leary, Mia Farrrow, Anita Pallenberg and the High priest of the Church of Satan Anton Lavey.Soon after this event Damian moved into Anton Lavey's headquarters the Black House, where he received personal instruction in the satanic arts from the black pope himself and was ordained as a high priest. In the ensuing years the mystery root man was always in the right place at the wrong time. The Glorious Dead is a stunning long anticipated album by Belle Phoenix and The Subterranean Sea.Belle Phoenix is an Australian / Finn living in Finland who began recording the album in New Yorkwith the illustrious musical director Mark Plati (David Bowie, Lou Reed) Back in Australia she hooked up with The Holy Soul's Trent Mardento record at the iconic Albert Music Studio, the original home for the Easybeats. Later they became housemates and formed a band, the Moths which soon morphed into the Primitive CalculatorsThe band were instrumental in organising a series of gigs named "Little Band nights", where hastily formed bands would play for 15 minutes each; this led to the recording of a compilation EP. Interviewed by Patrick Emery just before a Calculators show at the Toff In Town in December 2013 Stuart said that "In the '60's people believed that there was love and peace and that the world was going to change, we inherited the the failure of that optimism. So we just thought that everything was fucked." In 2013 The World Is Fucked surfaced as the Primitive Calculator's proper debut, following mostly live recordings and collections of singles, EPs, and other collected scraps from their shambling early days. It was called The World is Fucked because they stated that's what we believe. The world's not any better now – in fact, it's worse. I can remember when the hippopotamus and rhinoceros weren't endangered species. I can remember when there was opposition, and when Chicago School economics wasn't a naturalised reality of life. And the anger in our music is because it doesn't need to be like that – and we don't need to be this nasty society.Notwithstanding his regular invective, Grant concedes the modern world isn't completely bad, and he identifies “drinking tea, drinking coffee, reading books, being of use in other people's lives” as the enjoyable aspects of his contemporary environment.While Grant affirms the Primitive Calculators' commitment to its “absolute, unfailing desire to tell an absolute, dark nihilistic story”, the latest Primitive Calculators record is confronting in a different sense. “It's called On Drugs, a psychedelic-space-folk record about taking hallucinogenic drugs.” While The Primitive Calculators are probably Stuart's most notorious music combo , in 2014 the tv show ABC Rage called them "Australia's most influential band that you've never heard of". Eora/Sydney born Julie Montan now based in Naarm/Melbourne is a Songwriter, Musician, Message-Based Artist, Performer, Activist and Role Model to her 10-year-old daughter. In 1990 Julie quit high school and joined the theatre. In 1993 she moved to Melbourne to study drama at the VCA. Then in 2000 started a T-shirt/performance art label that produced provocative political and feminist slogans which featured in national newspapers, magazines and were showcased at Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and Mercedes Australian Fashion Weeks. In 2008 Julie began to fuse multidisciplinary aspects of her practice into one symbiotic art form; music composition, music performance and music video production. Julie played the Forum, Melbourne Arts Festival (2009), St Paul's Cathedral, MMW (2017) and Melbourne Town Hall's "Miscellanea". In 2018 Julie received her BA in Songwriting and Music Production and in 2021 continues to explore songwriting by responding to conventions of society and culture fusing pop/rock modalities with experimental/psychedelic/punk elements drawing influence from Middle Eastern heritage. Julie has produced many events; large scale and small including: "In Dreams U R Roy" with members of the Black Arm Band, to raise money for Close The Gap, "Someday We'll Find It" featuring the-one-and-only Kamahl - co-produced with Supple Fox in collaboration with the Melbourne Arts Community - to raise money for Thornbury Primary School and "The Last Greatest Show On Earth" a fundraiser for musical instruments and a musical therapist for patients at The John Cade Psychiatric Ward at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Julie Montan has been on Rage, the cover of Beat Magazine, played with Joe Lally from Fugazi, sung back ups for soul queen Betty Harris and soul/r&b king Syl Johnson, and has featured in The Bakehouse Project Book wearing the Gown Of Shadows made by Alexi Freeman and Tessa Blazey. She's produced many low-budget / lo-fi shows for indoor and outdoor venues too, programmed and performed gigs all over Melbourne, hosted the infamous "Carport Concert", is exhibited in the Australian Music Vault, made zines, directed music videos including the iconic "1999" starring Alan Brough from Spicks and Specks and played alongside some of Melbourne's most respected acts. He has impressive performance and recording credits with both Australian and International artists, having performed at major festivals and concerts in Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Europe, China and the USA. MEX - Off kilter music for the disaffected...Originating from the invasion throes of 1970s British punk and landing befittingly into an energised DIY indie setting came Mex, releasing several recordings from 1980 until 1984, thereafter, taking a hiatus until the twenty-first century.For the two decades afterwards, Mex was locked away and immersed in almost anonymous studio productions that have seen him associated with an assortment of bizarre artists, including the likes of sadly departed pop supremo George Michael, to the avant-garde of ex-Soft Machine member Robert Wyatt. Re- emergence as an artist in his own right struck in 2014, with the release of Dr Jekyll & Mrs Hyde, an album featuring Porcupine Tree’s Colin Edwin and amongst others, Dr Feelgood guitarist, Gordon Russell. It all began after several ‘70s punk skirmishes, whereby Mex’s sound started to disconnectedly find itself with the debut release of Alternative Pop Music in 1980. The recording preserves the anarchic free spirit that surfaced from punk, but with art sound-scapes and experimental textures akin to Krautrock, mixed with an alternative funk dub. For all these years that album has remained a firm favourite on the underground scene to the disaffected in the know-how. 1981 saw the follow-up Intense Living with its collage cut-up cold graveyard cover, set against a New York skyline and songs innocently depicting mankind’s dark future. The experimental textures remain, yet with a hefty wash of melody over the top. This was to be the last album Mex would release until the twenty-first century. A collision of personal life events and underground interest for that past era enticed and inspired Mex to pick up where all was left off, resurfacing again as an artist with that old cliché saying springing to mind, ‘better late than never!’ Everything goes full circle... In October 2020 Jack Howard appeared on Planet X to introduce Dog Songs the companion album to his biography Small moments of glory.Before he formed his own bands he played and recorded with the iconic Hunters and collectors for nearly 20 years, he also finds the time to teach music at Wesley college in Melbourne and add his trumpet sound to many other artist's albums.Secrets and White Lies is an album he released in 2001 through Stuart Coupe's Laughing Outlaw records and the album is very hard to find. Steven Kilbey was born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England on the 13th of September 1954.Five years later the family emigrated to Australia, first living at Billabong Avenue In Dapto NSW, and later moving to Wollongong and then Canberra where Kilbey developed his interest in music, listening to The Beatles, Bowie, The Byrds, T-Rex, Easybeats, Russell Morris and Dylan.When he was 17 Kilbey joined a Canberra 'cabaret band' called Saga and then a group called Beyond Beavers. In 1974 he started working with Peter Koppes in a band called Precious Little. By 1975 they were going under the moniker Baby Grande appearing around town in full glam power-chord crunching hard rock mode as a vehicle for Kilbey’s nascent song-writing. They supported ACDC and managed to put down some demos for EMI. These recordings were put out as an album by the US label Hozac in 2018. You may have heard them played on Planet X. Surprisingly or perhaps unsurprisingly to some, they weren’t signed by EMI. Married and working in the public service as you do in Canberra Kilbey moved to Sydney by the end of the decade where he met Marty-Wilson Piper. Together with Koppes and Nick Ward on drums they formed The Church Of Man which was soon shortened to The Church.There’s no doubt Steve Kilbey is a legend. It goes without saying that the respect for his talent is assured as singer, songwriter and bass player with The Church who released their debut album Of Skins and Heart in April 1981. The Church have released 25 albums and counting along with numerous compilations, EPs and singles such as The Unguarded Moment and Under The Milky Way which are rightly regarded as iconic eighties songs. Besides ever-circling Australia they’ve constantly toured internationally.During that time and in between times Kilbey has remained relentless in recording numerous essential solo albums and side projects including The Slow Crack, Remindlessness and White Magic with Martin Kennedy of ambient instrumentalists All India Radio. The latest is by Steve Kilbey and The Winged Heels titled The Hall Of Counterfeits, a sprawling collection of 23 beautifully lush and melancholy cosmic pieces that require complete attention when listening, to fully appreciate the magnificence of the songs.Text: Paul Elliott & Michael Helms
Hugo Race is somewhat of a musical polymath, born into a musical family he’s since been making a living recording and playing music live for an appreciative coterie of fans around the world.He formed Dum Dum Fit in 1978 as lead vocalist and guitarist with Robin Casinader on keyboards, two years later they formed Plays With Marionettes with Edward Clayton-Jones and Nick Seymour.In 1983 Hugo Race joined Nick Cave in his new band Nick Cave: Man or Myth? a year later renamed The Bad Seeds, issuing their debut album From Her To Eternity. Seedy Reed is a multi-instrumentalist whose origins date back to 1993 as vocalist and rhythm guitarist for London-based artrock combo Gaw Nihc.The band on formation was heavily influenced by avant-gardists such as Faust and The Residents- and as such, they all chose their own pseudonyms, the most amusing of which being bassist Katie Kutts who just stole her name from another person: a member of the UK dance music project: Sheep On Drugs. To date Reed has been the only member of this band to pursue a solo career- at least using the same moniker. Despite their distance, Gaw Nihc still collaborate and their latest EP Broken Art came out in 2020. After relocating to Melbourne in 2001. Reed played solo acoustic shows for 2 years before forming his power trio ‘The Seedy Three.’ The band commenced by putting together a tribute LP of Prince’s Purple Rain album that somehow managed to be squashed down to 25 minutes. After an extensive tour schedule, the band wrapped up and Reed immediately returned to the strict combination of his own solo work as well as his faithful collaboration with Gaw Nihc.The striking difference between these two projects are Reed’s vocals… with Gaw Nihc, he sings in many different styles, but as Seedy Reed, he is absolutely committed to presenting his singing with a distinct guttural growl.After only presenting a handful of recorded tunes as a solo artist- including a run of download-only protest songs made as fundraisers for charities or humanitarian organisations, Reed finally released his debut LP ‘Every Taste in the Basement’ in 2021.Seedy Reed is here with Paul Elliott to introduce the songs from Every Taste in the Basement on And This One's Introduced By... on Planet X on 3CR.seedyreed.bandcamp

Miguel Rios is a gifted story-telling guitarist who's songs try to make sense of his childhood ghosts.He was born in an alternative community living a free and lawless childhood in the Far North Queensland hinterland. The memories remained and followed him to the tin studio just outside Melbourne where he recorded this gem of an album. The John Lawrence Hour was formed in 2008 by John Lawrence who's been a fixture in the Underground music scene since the early 1980's. Starting with Permanent Press who played St. Kilda's iconic Crystal Ballroom and The Prince Of Wales Hotel circa '81, the band were an intense, post-punk outfit with chilling lyrics, and an experimental sound.Underground cult band Black Sun was John's next endeavour playing smaller inner city gigs around Melbourne and recording with Tony Cohen and Chris Thompson.After that John formed Go Public, a band that had a powerful pop sensibility, crashing guitars and a rhythm section that drove their sound. Peter Farnon is a founding member songwriter and guitarist for the Australian band Boom Crash Opera and post punk outfit Serious Young Insects. Antediluvian Rocking Horse are a project who produce music and soundscapes that are entirely recycled from other recorded works, formed in 1994 by two artists Paul Wain, and Susan King who dubbed themselves DJ2 and DJ3 respectively. Paul was a sculptor and graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts and Susan is a collage artist, writer and Anti-copyright advocate. Ollie Olsen of Max Q, Taipan Tiger Girls and other electronic outfits also contributed.Susan King addressed the eighth biennial Copyright Law & Practice Symposium, 7 November 1997 on the topic of fair dealing for copyrighted materials in art. In a lecture delivered to then Attorney-General of Australia Daryl Williams, she argued that the re-use of culture should be encouraged, not hindered and litigated. In Susan King was interviewed in the Sydney Morning Herald, and described as Australia's "lone voice of dissent" in her public call for the lessoning of copyright law. At around this time, she also assisted Negativland in its campaign to sue the Recording industry association of America.Antediluvian Rocking Horse insists that all its works are 'one hundred per cent recycled'. This is apparent in pieces like September Shuffle, a track that features excerpts from Fox News, The Pixies and, possibly, the KLF.In reviewing ARH's first international release, Dom Phillips of Mixmag wrote,imagine techno, yet constructed with burps, old samples and rocking through a gallery of strange voices, cut-ups, '70's elevator music run backwards...the lot....crazy channel hopping mish-mash, yet it all works!Diane Lowry, then editor of Electronic Musician, named the Antediluvian Rocking Horse album Music for the Odd Occasion, Best Electronic Album for May 1997Techno dance group Antediluvian Rocking Horse approaches the editing of samples and tape loops the same as MTV cuts videos: fast and furious. Growing up in the outer suburb of Springvale in the early 1970's Stuart Grant, Denise Rosenberg, Frank Lovece and David Light were buddies at Springvale High School and shared a love of groups like Velvet Underground, MC5, The Fugs, 13th Floor Elevators and the Godz. Later they became housemates and formed a band, the Moths which soon morphed into the Primitive CalculatorsThe band were instrumental in organising a series of gigs named "Little Band nights", where hastily formed bands would play for 15 minutes each; this led to the recording of a compilation EP. Interviewed by Patrick Emery just before a Calculators show at the Toff In Town in December 2013 Stuart said that "In the '60's people believed that there was love and peace and that the world was going to change, we inherited the the failure of that optimism. So we just thought that everything was fucked."In 2013 The World Is Fucked surfaced as the Primitive Calculator's proper debut, following mostly live recordings and collections of singles, EPs, and other collected scraps from their shambling early days. It was called The World is Fucked because they stated that's what we believe. The world's not any better now – in fact, it's worse. I can remember when the hippopotamus and rhinoceros weren't endangered species. I can remember when there was opposition, and when Chicago School economics wasn't a naturalised reality of life. And the anger in our music is because it doesn't need to be like that – and we don't need to be this nasty society.Notwithstanding his regular invective, Grant concedes the modern world isn't completely bad, and he identifies “drinking tea, drinking coffee, reading books, being of use in other people's lives” as the enjoyable aspects of his contemporary environment.While Grant affirms the Primitive Calculators' commitment to its “absolute, unfailing desire to tell an absolute, dark nihilistic story”, the latest Primitive Calculators record is confronting in a different sense. “It's called On Drugs, a psychedelic-space-folk record about taking hallucinogenic drugs.” While The Primitive Calculators are probably Stuart's most notorious music combo , in 2014 the tv show ABC Rage called them "Australia's most influential band that you've never heard of". Australian singer Garry Gray made his appearance in 1974 with long lost group Judas Iscariot and the traitors with Chris Walsh and released the Stooges cover Shake appeal. With the addition of Ollie Olson and Peter Cave, the pair formed The Reals in 1975 and were to become one of Melbourne’s few original “punk” bands. With the departure of Olson, the Reals brought in Michael Holmes on guitar to become The Negatives in 1977 and contributed the eerie Planet on the prowl to the faux punk compilation Lethal Weapons on Suicide Records in 1978. BBQ Haque (pronounced 'Barbeque HACK') are a Melbourne instrumental - Psych - Garage band who've been described by Patrick Emery on the i94bar.com music website, as transcendental and maybe dissociative. Either way, you can get lost in BBQ Hague, but you're not really lost , you're just on a different plane. It's a plane with a dusty spaghetti western edge, mesmerising beats and psychedelic chants. You're dragged in wide eyed, devoted to the cause, if you only knew what it all meant. In this edition of Planet X, Dr. Gonzo presents And This One's Introduced By... with Little Murders mainstay Rob Griffiths talking about the story of his band Little Murders with tracks from 2 recent releases Dromana-Rama and Live at Anglesea 1981.Formed in 1979, Rob Griffiths named his band Little Murders after a 1971 film directed by Alan Arkin and starring Elliot Gould.Rob embraced the 60’s English mod culture being influenced by groups like the Who, The Kinks and The Troggs.He’s released numerous albums with several different lineups of the band and more information can be found on the Little Murders bandcamp page.
Blackie is Peter Black who played guitar and sang in the Sydney Band The Hard Ons that formed in 1981 and still occasionally play live.Known for their high energy and humour the band released over a dozen studio albums, compilations and live records.Blackie has embarked on a solo tour around the country, to promote 2 albums on the Cool Bananas label, the tour has been severely curtailed by the lockdowns associated with the coronavirus. In the early 1980’s an entertaining Ska band the Strange Tenants were a fixture around the Australian pub rock scene. Bruce ‘Boots’ Hearn was the band’s vocalist, trumpet and harmonica player. Woody Guthrie was a progressive thinker and also regarded as one of the most significant figures in American folk music.Bruce Hearn was inspired by Woody Guthrie to put together a band, Bruce Hearn and the Machinists to interpret his songs and help pass them on to a new generation.With songs like like I ain’t got no home, Worried man blues, and Hard times. Emma Donovan is an acclaimed Indigenous Australian singer and songwriter best known for her work with soul bands, The Putbacks and The Black Arm Band project. She has also toured and recorded with Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter, Spinifex Gum, Christine Anu, Yothu Yindi, Jimmy Little and Paul Kelly among others. On her mother’s side, Emma is part of the famed Donovan family of singers of the Gumbaynggirr people, of what is now known as Northern New South Wales. Kris Schroeder is a member of the 3 piece band The Basics with bandmates Wally De Backer and Tim Heath. Quiet achievers who’ve released 5 studio albums and played over 2 1/2 thousand gigs that include tours to Japan, Norway and the UK. Back in Australia The Basics have embarked on multiple tours that specifically targeted culturally underprivileged groups of people in rural areas, regional schoolchildren and indigenous communities. Percussionist Wally De Backer also known as Gotye had enormous success with several albums and a song called Somebody I used To Know in 2011. Kris who plays Bass in the Basics has dubbed himself Jackmann and earlier this year released an EP “whatever doesn’t kill you, just makes you bored". And now a new 9 track album recorded at London’s famous Abbey Road studio. Mick Medew is a legendary musician who hails from Brisbane. As lead vocalist and guitarist he formed the band the 31st in 1979 with Ron Peno (the future Died Pretty singer) in 1981 Mick formed the Screaming Tribesmen who signed with Sydney label Citadel and released the classic single Igloo.Since releasing many singles, EPs and albums and touring around the country with Screaming Tribesmen Mick Medew was awarded the prestigious GW McLennan Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2015 Queensland Music Awards.Since 2011, he's been performing with a new project, Mick Medew and the Mesmerisers featuring ex-Screaming Tribesmen members Brian Mann, Michael Charles, and Lois Andrews. Mick recently released his first solo album Psychopharmacologist on 1-94 Bar Records, the songs were worked up over five years of solo shows in Brisbane and Melbourne and further arranged in a Brisbane studio when COVID-19 madness made live shows impossible for Mick Medew and the Mesmerisers. Publisher, writer, historian, bibliophile, VHS enthusiast and all-round top bloke, Adam Lee, visited Planet X early in December 2019 to talk about his spiral-bound 300 page+ book The Australian Video Guide and to transfer some of the personal energy he seemingly was able radiate at will onto the 3CR airwaves. Fascinated by black & white video and trash film from an early age, Adam’s painstaking research first appeared in the late 1990s in the seminal and superlative zine Spasmo which he wrote and edited and dedicated to Euro-trash cinema. In October of 2020 he began publishing Videomania — The Australian Home Video Journal. Each issue devoted to uncovering the products and activities of notorious Australian Video labels. The first issue told the Video Classics story while number two, released in 2021, presented the Palace Explosive label. Ever so sadly, there will not be another issue as Adam unexpectedly passed away at the age of 45 in July of 2021. Adam Lee’s important and entertaining work which reached many people around Australia and internationally will live on in print and as this rare recording on a late-night Planet X episode on radio 3CR will hopefully attest. Rest in peace Adam Lee.
