We started Someone To Tell It To in 2012, and all along, our philosophy has been to listen. Because our mission is to "cultivate meaningful connections through compassionate listening and train others to do the same," we thought it might be best to highlight both aspects—listening and training—in a podcast. Both listening and training continue to catalyze this global listening movement where Someone's voice is being heard, Someone is being reminded that they matter, and Someone doesn't need to feel alone in whatever they are facing in life.We are so excited to share these rich conversations with you. Please subscribe to hear each new episode as soon as it's released!
In this rebroadcast of a delightful 2022 episode, Jeannie Zappe asks this question: “What if I can set a goal - big or small, conquer a challenge, or make a change?” And then she answers: “It means saying ‘yes’, and living your best life.” On September 6, 2021, at the age of 55, Jeannie completed a solo crossing of the English Channel from Dover, England to Wissant, France in 14:55 hours. She loves sharing her story of her journey to the Channel and how she landed on the shores of France in “mid-life”. Most importantly, she enjoys sharing the lessons learned along the way while she inspires others to live their very best life.
Ken Mossman partners with men to grow their presence, sharpen their focus, and up-level their leadership. He works on relationships, because as he says - “No man with any concern about his world goes it alone. He needs to develop his awareness of himself and others, his empathy, and his capacity to see and take responsibility for his vision, his values, and the impact he has. We get down in the trenches and work on emotional literacy, fluency, and flexibility. We explore the light, the shadow, and everything in between.”
We explore together with Ken in this episode. And we do it again, twice, on Ken’s podcast - “Mojo for the Modern Man”, later this autumn. It was a privilege to have three incredible and vulnerable conversations with Ken. He makes it so easy!

Brianna Campbell asks the question:
“What would happen if we thought about what is right with people rather than fixating on what is wrong with them?” Her fresh perspective about leadership is the catalyst of our conversation about organizational culture. She knows that the more positive the culture we are in, in our work - and in our personal lives as well - the better, more content, and enthusiastic we will be. We embrace that approach, too.
Today is the first day of Black History Month and we are reminded to continue to listen to those voices that have often been silenced, those who have fresh perspectives, and those who have much value to offer the world. May we all work towards seeing what is right with people rather than what is wrong. SOMEONE TO TELL IT TO

In the summer of 2021, we had an enlightening conversation with Timothy Shriver, who leads the Special Olympics International Board of Directors. We are pleased to share this episode again today, as our nation just commemorated the life and legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King’s work enabled barriers to come down for so many people, those who have been marginalized and held back from living their best lives. We re-publish this conversation with Tim Shriver, because that is what he and everyone connected with the Special Olympics are doing for those living with intellectual and physical disabilities - giving them the opportunity to live fully and joyfully according to their gifts and abilities. Tim talks with us about what ultimately matters the most in life. It’s simply love. Love is his driving force, his reason for serving, and his life’s mission. You won’t want to miss this episode for the well-earned wisdom he offers.

2022 is Someone To Tell It To’s 10 year-anniversary so we want to re-share this episode between our co-founders Michael Gingerich and Tom Kaden. Michael and Tom reflect on how the mission began through their deep friendship, the ebbs and flows of non-profit work, why STTIT is so needed, and why it has had such a profound global impact. They believe that everyone needs someone to tell it to and that everyone needs grace and a safe place to share. They believe that everyone has a story to tell and a need to be listened to, that everyone is worthy and has something to offer, that everyone hungers for authenticity, that everyone has a need to be who they are created to be, and that everyone is meant to live an abundant life. We hope you’ll enjoy this intimate conversation about why they made a covenant together to address the global epidemic of loneliness.

Jennifer Marshall's life was going exactly as planned. Then, she turned 26 and everything changed.
Jenn found herself unable to control her thoughts, spinning and struggling with reality. She was hospitalized and sent home to take some time and get some sleep. But, it would take yet a second hospitalization shortly after to reveal the fact that this was not about being overtired. It was about mental illness and how it would redefine Jenn's world in a profound way, from that moment forward.
She was soon after diagnosed with Type 1 bipolar disorder. It was a lot for her and her family to take in, but instead of burying the conversation, she embraced it and even began to share her experiences publicly.
Realizing the power of sharing her story, she co-founded and the became the Executive Director of This Is My Brave, Inc., a global storytelling initiative for people to share their stories of overcoming mental illness through creative expression at live events around the world, and online.
This episode is premiering following World Mental Health Day, on October 10. The month of October is World Mental Health Month, in which many organizations promote awareness and educational opportunities for people to learn about and acknowledge the challenges that mental illness brings to so many lives.
This episode with Jennifer Marshall is a very special one, as she talks about living with mental illness and the challenges she experiences with it.

Marisa Page is a citizen of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma and a descendant from the Ponca and Comanche tribes. She currently works for First Nations Development Institute, and lives in New Mexico. She is an advocate for Indigenous peoples throughout the United States and around the world.
Our conversation with her centered on what it is like to be an Indigenous person and how the communities of Indigenous peoples have often been historically marginalized, forgotten, and taken for granted, and their contributions to the world have not always been recognized.
But Marisa has hope that through conversations such as ours with her, and through other advocacies, this can change.

Today marks the start of the fifth season of the Someone To Tell It To Podcast. We believe that to help the world to listen requires putting consistent, constant content about listening and its tremendous transformative power out into the world. Inviting guests locally, nationally, and globally to join in conversations with us about the vital roles that listening plays in our everyday lives can help to inspire, educate, and change all of our lives in positive ways.
Today's guest is one you don’t want to miss. Rabbi Ron Symons has been the senior director of Jewish Life, since July 2015, at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania, and also the founding director of the organization’s Center for Loving Kindness, since August 2017. In our conversation with Rabbi Ron, we discuss so many pressing matters happening around the world, but especially here in the United States like living wages, demoralizing rhetoric in public discourse, and especially gun violence. Rabbi Ron shares very poignantly about his experiences with an antisemitic terrorist attack in the form of a mass shooting, which took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue, in 2018 – in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In the midst of tragedies such as this one, Rabbi Ron reminds us what it means to move from being a bystander to an upstander who ‘Loves your Neighbor as Yourself.’

Pennsylvania State Representative Patty Kim joins us in conversation about leadership and public service, at the start of Women’s History Month. Her leadership style has, at its core, a commitment to and belief in listening as a means to understand others’ perspectives and as a way to overcome differences and divisions. We very much appreciated her philosophy and hope that you will too.

We reminisce with Vicki Halsey about a memorable evening we shared in her home outside San Diego, California, four years ago. That night we learned of her professional (and personal) mission as a vice president in the Ken Blanchard Companies to help others know their brilliance. Her energetic, infectious personality infuses every conversation you have with her with a true sense that you have special gifts and abilities that make you a brilliant person. We absolutely loved our conversation with Vicki! We bet that you’ll feel her passion and supreme encouragement, too.

Eric Maddox joins us in this episode of the podcast. He was a member of a Delta Force Special Operations team in Tikrit, Iraq that was part of the Command responsible for tracking down Saddam Hussein, who was found and captured on December 13, 2003.
Eric shares his story as an interrogator working in top-secret conditions to find Hussein using a process called empathy-based listening.
Empathy-based listening in practice helps us in intense conversations by asking the “right” questions to get people to open up, guides us in following conversational breadcrumbs, helps build trust, and keeps us focused on others' needs and desires.
You may not find yourself in conflicts like Eric, but you may find yourself in relational conflicts. How can Eric’s empathy-based approach alter intense conversations with those within your sphere of influence?

In a rebroadcast of a January 2019 episode with our dear friend Benjamin Mathes, founder of Los Angeles-based Urban Confessional, we have a conversation about how profound and innate to our human need is the act of intentional listening and presence with one another. We reshare this episode because Benjamin will be our special guest on December 2, at 7:00p.m. Eastern Standard Time, when he will join with us and the creators of the virtual game Cozy Juicy Real, which fosters deeper dialogue and conversations between those who play it. Benjamin will talk about his creation of Urban Confessional and relate it to STTIT’s mission - both of which create more meaningful connections between human beings. We know you’ll find this conversation to be an engaging one, even if you’ve heard it before. So, enjoy it as you listen, and be transported to a safe and warm listening space.

We play a game in this very special episode - during our conversation with Jed and Sophia Lazar, curators of the game COZY JUICY REAL. It was a lot of fun, but also serious and intimate, deep and vulnerable. That’s the point of the game - to create the context for conversations that go well beyond the superficial and shallow, helping one another to grow quickly to know one another better and to form bonds that touch the heart and enliven the spirit. That happened with us and Sophia and Jed. They’re delightful people who understand how to bring people together in this fractured, unsettled world. We know you’ll treasure them, too.

One of the things that drew us to our guest, Shola Richards, is his level of vulnerability in his speaking and writing. He talks openly about his mental health challenges, his suicidal thoughts, his feelings of inadequacy at times, essentially, the deeper matters of the heart. That’s especially important to us as men. In our conversation with Shola, he speaks of “ubuntu”, the Southern African word and concept of “humanness” - a quality that includes the essential human virtues of compassion and humanity and understanding, that “I am only because you are”.Ubuntu changes the way we work, live and lead. Shola believes in connecting to our shared humanity. We believe in it, too.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/someonetotellitto)
Professor, author, psychologist, and community collaborator, Dr. Tania Israel’s goal is to help promote understanding by developing greater connection to one another. Connection is the most important thing, she says. Our conversation with her explores how to engage in dialogue by building skills for listening, managing emotions, and perspective taking. It is by this way, that understanding leads to connection.

John Noltner set out on a road trip across the United States to rediscover the common humanity that connects us by asking people the simple question “What does peace mean to you?” Traveling with the foundational belief that “connection...listening deeply...and challenging our own expectations so we can hear something new...and to keep showing up” are the basic building blocks of relationships, John has so many incredible stories to tell. You’ll hear some of them in this wonderful conversation we had with him.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/someonetotellitto)
What makes Reza Marvasti come alive is being in service to others. Reza founded a mission called The Power of Play - to support every child’s right to learn and develop through the power of play. He has been to some of the most distressed and dangerous places in the world, but has found that laughter and joy, through play, is truly the greatest medicine. He says: “Children are the future of our planet, and raising a generation that has known love instead of suffering is of utmost importance. The power of play should never be underestimated – for when it comes to the life of a child, there is never such a thing as too much play.” Reza reminds each of us to truly be alive! We are kicking off Season Four with a conversation between our co-founders Michael Gingerich and Tom Kaden. As Someone To Tell It To approaches it’s 10-year anniversary this coming January, Michael and Tom reflect on how the mission began, the ebbs and flows of non-profit work, why STTIT is so needed, and why it has had such a profound global impact. We hope you’ll enjoy this intimate conversation about why they made a covenant together to address the global epidemic of loneliness.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/someonetotellitto)

Living authentically matters to Paul Colaianni. A lot. He says taking the risk to be who we really are can ultimately be a very good thing. He says we must not allow others to dishonor us because they won’t allow us to be our authentic selves. He says bringing out our fears into the light makes our fears weaker, not stronger. His story has led him to these discoveries about authenticity. He says these things and so much more in this conversation about living as authentically as we can.

His gentle and calming manner is exactly what we need in this turbulent and unsettled time. Dr. Krishna Naineni, a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and on the training faculty at The Brighton and Sussex Medical School, in southeast England, reminds us in this conversation about the need for healthcare professionals to see patients as human beings, above all else. Kat Vellos is a prolific writer and speaker on the topic of friendships. Intimate friends share each other’s experiences and in some ways, they inhabit each other’s lives. They often have similar viewpoints and values, and they may share similar backgrounds and traditions. They witness the milestones and unexpected changes of life, the highs and lows, celebrations and sadness. In this hyperconnected world we live in today we may be more disconnected than ever before. Yet, we believe one of the greatest antidotes to loneliness is friendship. Kat offers helpful wisdom to foster healthy friendships because friendship isn’t something that is taught in school (but perhaps it should be!).

I have a story that when people find out, I won’t be taken seriously when I talk about how I want to create a more loving world. I fear that age will limit my opportunity and my pay rate. I fear that I will be treated as less than, especially when most of my social circle is older than me. Yet I have been inspired by the loving warrior spirit of @greta thunberg this week. As much as we may have liked to ignore the effects of that war on soldiers, the signs could not be dismissed and, decades later, the hidden anguish can still remain. Before it’s too late, we want to reach beyond the myth and nostalgia of World War II and shine a light on what Tim Madigan states - no matter the war, it means “death, disfigurement, and horrors no human heart is equipped to bear.”
For so many veterans, it was a real relief to learn about the realities of PTSD. Far too many had felt isolated and crazy, and thought it was just them; they didn’t want to talk about it. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/someonetotellitto)
In this program, STTIT co-founders interview Michael Verde, an award-winning teacher, documentarian, and the founder of Memory Bridge. Memory Bridge is a non-profit foundation dedicated to ending the emotional isolation of people with dementia. Michael chats about empathy - climbing into someone’s skin and walking around in it can give you the power to genuinely understand a variety of people - as it is exemplified through the America’s #1 best-loved novel, To Kill A Mockingbird.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/someonetotellitto)

We’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to call the people we listen to. Are they clients? Friends? Storytellers?Nothing quite fit. We wanted a name that represented the type of relationship we try to build and the way we value those we listen to, but we struggled to find a single word that could accomplish exactly what we needed. In the end, we were surprised to find the answer staring right at us.Someone.Someone with a story to share. Someone who needs a friend. Someone who is grieving, angry, lonely, afraid, or has questions about matters of faith.Someone who simply needs Someone to listen. This is our special sauce; it’s our identifying quality. Because everyone is the “Someone” in Someone To Tell It To.
In this episode, we have two special Someones, with a powerful story to tell about all things life: depression, losses, broken hearts, broken dreams--and much, much redemption.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/someonetotellitto)
In 2012, our guest, Benjamin Mathes created Urban Confessional: a Free Listening Movement. Since then, the movement has grown to over 80 countries with thousands of volunteers holding signs that say, "Free Listening". In this episode, Benjamin explores the universal desire of being heard, making space (“with-ing”), and paying attention to each other. Listen carefully, Ben offers some strong experiential knowledge in this episode! Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/someonetotellitto)
To get us started, we decided to highlight STTIT’s First Annual Gathering speaker, our dear friend, author, and speaker, Tim Madigan. You can learn more about Tim in this blog post about his involvement, perception, and hopes for STTIT. You’ll also learn how his book influenced us (so much so that we got matching tattoos in Fred Rogers handwriting… which you will hear about the podcast).
“Take 45 seconds and think of someone in your life who you could tell anything to.”
