D-Day was the name given to the June 6, 1944, invasion of the beaches at Normandy in northern France by troops from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries during World War II. France at the time was occupied by the armies of Nazi Germany, and the amphibious assault—codenamed Operation Overlord—landed some 156,000 Allied soldiers on the beaches of Normandy by the end of the day.
Despite their success, some 4,000 Allied troops were killed by German soldiers defending the beaches. At the time, the D-Day invasion was the largest naval, air and land operation in history, and within a few days about 326,000 troops, more than 50,000 vehicles and some 100,000 tons of equipment had landed. By August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, and in spring of 1945 the Allies had defeated the Germans. Historians often refer to D-Day as the beginning of the end of World War II.

Many parents spend more time in the empty nest than with their children at home. However, most are not prepared for the sense of loss and the need to find purpose as new empty nesters. Mike Segovia and Sharon K Ball interview author and speaker Jim Burns about his book, Finding Joy in the Empty Nest.
Whether you’ve been looking forward to it or dreading it, the experience of coming home to an empty nest brings with it a well of emotions, realizations, and one gigantic, all-consuming thought: Now what? As an empty nester, the options before you are practically limitless – a fact that can be as exciting as it is terrifying. Rather than offering shallow suggestions of hobbies you should take up, Burns encourages readers to actively pursue a fresh start, reinvent themselves, and thrive beyond this new stage to ensure that the best is yet to come.

The significance of the D-Day landings lies in the fact that they represented a major turning point in World War II and allows us to reflect on those who gave their lives to guarantee the freedom enjoyed today. Less than a year after the invasion, the Allies formally accepted Nazi Germany’s surrender.
The D-Day invasion, or Normandy landings, were part of a top-secret mission called “Operation Overlord.” They marked the beginning of the of the end of World War II and the liberation of German-occupied Western Europe. The D-Day landings broke the Atlantic wall which was thought to be unbreakable and allowed the Allies to successfully complete the liberation of Western Europe. After the victory in Normandy, Paris was liberated in August 1944 as the Allies pushed slowly eastward and the Soviet Union moved toward Berlin as well.
Adolf Hitler launched one final unsuccessful counteroffensive in December 1944 at the Battle of the Bulge, called “the greatest American battle of the war” by Winston Churchill. While the battle was intended to split Allied lines and force negotiated peace, American forces were able to contain the battle and inflict heavier losses on the German forces.
The fighting would continue for another month, but Hitler’s last chance at stopping the Allies advancing from the west was lost. The war in Europe was officially over on May 8, 1945, otherwise known as Victory in Europe Day or V-E Day.
Oscar Wilde said, "Always forgive your enemies – nothing annoys them so much."
Forgiving those that have wronged you can be really difficult to do, and we have all struggled with this at one time or another in our lives. On the next edition of the show, Mike and Sharon's guest is pastor and author David Peterson. David's latest book Journey to Forgiveness: 21 Milestones to Freedom is the subject of their conversation.
They we also look back at the tragic mass shooting on March 27, 2023 at The Covenant School, in Nashville, Tennessee.

David Peterson Bio
Rev. David P. Peterson is an ordained pastor and board-certified chaplain, with over thirty years of experience in ministry to congregations, as well as chaplaincy experience in hospitals, fire/ems, law enforcement and hospice. He's provided emotional and spiritual care on the scenes of devastating events from 9/11 to school shootings and various community tragedies and in 1994, founded Shepherd’s Staff Pastoral Services, where he was able to provide spiritual care to thousands via chaplains he trained and placed at long term care facilities across the U.S.
A study in resiliency and forgiveness, David has lived all his life with tremors in his hands and arms and navigated the bullying, harassment and embarrassing moments it has invited from those who lack understanding and empathy. And at the age of 12, he was targeted by a neighborhood pedophile who used alcohol, pornography and affirmation to abuse him sexually, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. Years of silence, anger, shame and self- destructive behaviors followed before healing and forgiveness transformed him.
David and his wife, Arden — as well as their four sons and their families — reside in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.
Amen.

Today on the show, Mike interviews author, JT Jester, a young entrepreneur, philanthropist, podcaster, and inspirational speaker. JT invites us into his journey into finding joy in all circumstances and holding tightly to faith. He hopes that listeners will realize that there are no bad days—only hard ones.
By the time JT was three years old, he had spent 250 days in the hospital. He endured sixteen major surgeries before he was sixteen. Diagnosed with VATER/VACTERL Syndrome, a rare combination of several birth defects, JT’s life was anything but easy. On top of his physical challenges, he suffered dyslexia and short-term memory loss, which made learning nearly impossible for him. Yet JT pushed past his physical and educational roadblocks to achieve what many people told him he would never do—learn to read, graduate from high school, attend college, and become a successful motivational speaker, influential podcast host, and bestselling author.
JT’s improbable life story is evidence that, regardless of the mental and physical challenges you might face, you can create the life you want and accomplish the things you’ve only dreamed about. His remarkable journey is all the proof you need.
