Factors such as poverty, unemployment, corruption, peer pressure, greediness, and get rich quick syndrome are responsible for why youth engage in yahoo plus. Yes! We are back on another episode of ‘the Conversation’ on BTS. I am your host benoreal. Thank you for joining us wherever you are listening to our podcast. We continue our effort towards creating a better Nigeria by examining the effects and solutions to the yahoo plus epidemic in the country. For those listening to us for the first time, here is a quick pointer to what this episode is all about.
Cybercrime is popularly called “yahoo yahoo” in Nigerian parlance. It is about scamming unsuspecting people online for their hard-earned money. This crime has been ongoing in Nigeria for over two decades. The government set up several financial crime enforcement agencies to combat these nefarious activities. Though this was effective to some extent but, haven’t yielded the expected outcome. Lately, due to global awareness and awakening of the public to the mode of operations adopted by yahoo boys, the yahoo crime industry has become less lucrative. Thus, leading young boys and girls into ritual practices popular known as ‘yahoo plus’. In other words, yahoo plus is the act of killing innocent Nigerians believing their body parts if combined with spiritual concoction will lead to huge financial fortunes.
I episode 2, we examine the role of the government on the surge in yahoo plus activities in the country.
