Want to know what the West Midlands Group is doing differently with their cropping and pasture soil amelioration and crop rotations? Our host Grey Johnston was delighted to welcome Dr. Nathan Craig, Executive Officer of the West Midlands Group (WMG) in the studio to share WMG’s trials progress and some of the major outcomes delivered across the local shires of Dandaragan, Coorow, Gingin and Moora. The West Midlands Group formed in 2003 and then in 2008 pivoted its focus towards agricultural research and development to find solutions to the broader on-farm natural resource issues that affect production. Meet Josh Russell, the Operations Superintendent of Ammonia and Ammonium Nitrate at the CSBP chemicals business. He’s the guy responsible for keeping some of the highest-temperature and highest-pressure environments at CSBP running safely and efficiently – making sure everyone’s supported and all the right experts are in the room to get on top of any issues. Josh takes us behind the scenes of CSBP’s world-class environmentally efficient production plant, refrigerated storage and loading facilities, and answers some of our biggest questions, like:
- How do we get from nitrogen and hydrogen to ammonia, and from ammonia and nitric acid to ammonium nitrate that eventually ends up as Flexi-N?

With Australia’s national hockey program proudly based right here in our state, WA is the heart of hockey, creating more exciting opportunities for our young players than ever before. This includes elite-level sporting experiences like our regional Hockey WA carnivals, proudly sponsored by CSBP and soon to be heading to Narrogin, Northam, Bruce Rock and other regional hubs around the state.
To kick off 2023’s Hockey WA carnivals, 20-year-old Brodee Foster – rising star from Perth Thundersticks and Australia’s under-21s hockey team – joins our host Grey Johnston, CSBP Advice, Insights and Marketing Manager.
Brodee will be part of the touring Hockey WA team at three of this year’s regional carnivals, before heading off to Europe to play for the national under-21s team, and Malaysia for the Sultan of Johor Cup and the Junior World Cup. After that, he’s got his sights set on one day playing for the Kookaburras.
We were thrilled to have him in the studio to share what he loved about last year’s carnivals and what’s got him coming back for more in 2023.
These carnivals give thousands of regional school kids who’ve never played hockey before a great introduction to the sport. They also give those who’ve already picked up a hockey stick a chance to gain some tips from top hockey coaches and elite players, including Brodee Foster and Penny Squibb, and develop their skills in a fun and safe team environment.

What goes on behind the scenes to locally manufacture Agras, MacroPro and K-Till?
Find out what’s currently happening at our local manufacturing facilities at Kwinana. Nic Pattrick, CSBP Production Superintendent, joins our host Grey Johnston, CSBP Advice, Insight and Marketing Manager in this episode of the CSBP Grow Better podcast.
What are some of the benefits and challenges of manufacturing locally? How do we optimise product quality and meet customer demands?
CSBP operates the only compound fertiliser granulation plant in Australia, enabling us to offer the widest range of high-quality cropping fertilisers, including our flagship locally developed MacroPro, K-Till and Agras ranges. These products have excellent storage and handling characteristics and have been tailored to WA growing conditions and the requirements of local growers.
In addition to planning for our local manufacturing program for 2023, the CSBP team is also working hard to expand its product range and diversify its supply chain. We have sourced a new local supplier of sulfate of potash (SOP) from Kalium Lakes’ Beyondie Project in Western Australia, Australia’s first producer of SOP through primary solar evaporation. The locally produced SOP from Kalium Lakes is a key feedstock in the manufacture of CSBP’s premium NPK compound fertiliser MacroPro Extra.

We know the production of nitrogen fertiliser is emissions-intensive, but the application of this fertiliser to the paddock can also result in greenhouse gas emissions.
The theme for this fortnight’s episode is emissions from fertiliser application with a particular focus on understanding the sources of emissions from crops and pastures.
Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas released from soils, particularly soils with high nitrogen inputs such as crops and pastures. Agriculture is responsible for around 75% of nitrous oxide emissions in Australia.
Nitrogen from fertiliser can also be volatilised as ammonia gas which, while not a direct greenhouse gas, is nevertheless nitrogen lost to the atmosphere and not available to the plant.
So, what can we do to manage nitrous oxide emissions and other losses of nitrogen fertiliser, while improving productivity and profitability?
Debra Turner recently joined the CSBP team as Senior Sustainable Agriculture Advisor bringing with her a wealth of knowledge from working as a Researcher at Melbourne University and roles at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).

In this episode, James Easton, CSBP Senior Agronomist joins Grey Johnston to discuss ways to apply fertiliser more efficiently using the four Rs in a high-cost environment.
The 4Rs for best management practices are applying the right source of plant nutrients (or product), at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place.
High fertiliser costs are a great incentive to look for ways to apply fertilisers more efficiently. After all, profit is driven by lowering the cost of production without production loss.
Here are three ways to help lower production costs next year:

Soil and plant testing. The cost of soil and plant testing is negligible compared to what is being spent on fertiliser, and the most expensive fertiliser will always be the one that doesn’t produce the response we should be getting.

Banding potassium (K) in deficient paddocks. Potassium deficiencies in crops have become more widespread. Banding K at seeding is the most effective way of supplying it to crops.

Banding more N in deficient paddocks sown to cereals, if the risks of fertiliser toxicity and leaching losses are low.
