College Success Podcast!
Atomic Habits Book Review with Dr. Nari

In this 12th episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School college success podcast, I get to discuss one of my favorite books for self-improvement in any arena. The book is called Atomic Habits, written by James Clear. It's a book I've listened to many times and have also read the hard copy format. James reads and writes in a way that's easy to understand and absorb. However, the simplicity still makes a profound impact on how you view habits and habit changing.

When I first listened to Atomic Habits, I knew it would be perfect for college students. In college so many people actually talk about "habits" as the pain points in their daily lives: study habits, spending habits, procrastination habits, etc. James devoted an early chapter to sharing his college experience. It was then that he discovered the power of small changes that accumulated into big outcomes!

I'm not going to spoil the book for you, but in this podcast I share some key take-aways I had as a college professor. When talking with people in college, I get the sense they feel defeated by their bad habits and not knowing how to change them. Many college students don't tell me, "I have low grades because I'm not smart." But, they do tell me, "I don't have the best study habits."

I want people in college to be able to see the long-game. College isn't just about grades; it's a journey of self-discovery of who you are and who you want to be. One of my favorite quotes from the books is when James said something similar: "Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become." Let that sink it--are you voting for yourself?!!

I hope you enjoy this book review podcast. Our goal at the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School college success podcast is to share stories that motivate and inspire you, and illuminate the path for you beyond college! And of course, we won't forget the fun along the way! You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, and iHeart Radio. You can also watch the podcast on YouTube!

College Success Podcast
Stand Out to HR with Sarah Doss

In this 10th episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School college success podcast, I was so excited to interview Sarah Doss. I have known Sarah since she was in undergrad...because I was her professor! She was amazing then and just phenomenal now! Sarah earned her degree in Family and Child Sciences at Florida State University. She is now a human resources partner for a global technology company. Buckle up--she shared SO much wisdom on how to get noticed and hired after college!

When Sarah entered college, she knew she had a passion for people. She started with intentions for nursing. But, she found by sophomore year she wasn't interested in helping people in the medical setting. She changed over to Family and Child Sciences, not knowing exactly what she would do, but knew it was the perfect fit. Before she was willing to go to grad school, Sarah thought she'd take a year to work, "just to be sure." And that's where her journey to serving others in human resources really started!

In her current role, Sarah reviews 100s of applications and resumes for each job position. So, she has her finger on the pulse for exactly how to get noticed and hired after college. Resumes, interviews, and rejection--she tells all!

I hope you enjoy this interview podcast. College Success Podcast
From Spanish to LSATs and Law School with Erica Burgess

In this ninth episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School college success podcast, I had the honor of speaking with the wise Erica Burgess. I have known Erica from my undergrad days. Even though we never shared classes together, I knew she was intelligent, kind, and focused. And she has the perfect story on how you don't have to have it all figured out when you're in college!

Erica had a passion for Spanish in high school. With the mentorship of her teacher, she chose to pursue Spanish in college. While she had entertained the idea of attending law school, it wasn't until her junior year of college that the idea fully take shape. Again, with the guidance of her international business professors, she realized she could combine her love of languages, law, and business!

While Erica didn't have it all figured out from her Spanish major to law school, she put one-foot in front of the other to find her path. She shared wisdom on adjusting to college life and finding activities that brought her joy! She also discussed how you don't always get to do "everything you try out for" in college but that's okay!

I hope you enjoy this interview podcast. College Success Podcast!
Dress for Professional Success with Dr. Nari

In this seventh episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School college success podcast, I get to share my tips about dressing professionally. This is the number one question my college students ask me (outside of regular class materials or grad school advice). I think it's a great question and the answer isn't overly complicated! I'd like to think I know a thing or two about clothing--my young working years included retail jobs at the GAP and Express!

They key to dressing professionally is wearing clothes that fit well (not too big or too tight) and are in good condition (clean, wrinkle-free, and no damage). You also want to dress in clothes that make you feel confident and are comfortable! There is also a difference between what you would wear to a first-interview and what you might wear every day in your work environment. That's because different places have different "cultures" on what is considered professional dress.

Lastly, dressing professionally doesn't have to break the bank! I've learned not all clothes need to be dry-cleaned. You can take great care of your professional clothes, which makes them last longer, right at home on the delicate wash cycle. If you want to learn more about building a professional wardrobe, head over the blog on www.theprosperschool.com and check out the post, "Building A Work Wardrobe? 5 Must-Have Black Clothing and Accessory Items."

College Success Podcast!
College Prep From A Parent And Professor with Dr. Cicely Brantley

In this sixth episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School podcast, the lovely Dr. Cicely Brantley joined to share her wisdom as both a parent and professor. Cicely has a Bachelor's degree from Florida A&M University, two Master's Degrees from Florida State University, and a PhD from Florida State University. She has accomplished all of this, amazingly, while raising her five beautiful children.

Because of Cicely's experience as both a parent of college students and professor, I knew she would bring insight to the topic of college preparation. Cicely discussed the importance of both parents and students to expect a "transition" to college. She also advised that parents give students the opportunity to grown and problem solve. Lastly, Cicely shared for students to use their resources--especially their professors--if they are struggling.

I met Cicely 14 years ago when we both worked as therapists. She continues to devote herself to the education and service of others. She is currently a professor at Tallahassee Community College, where she teaches courses in the areas of Psychology, Human & Child Development, Marriage & Families and the African American Experience. She is also a licensed Mental Health Counselor and a certified Family Life Educator in private practice.

College Success Podcast!
College Sports and Time Management: Finding What Works For You with Ann Evans

In this fifth episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School podcast, I had the pleasure of talking with the amazing Ann Evans. Ann has a Bachelor's degree from Niagara University, her first Master's Degree from Bowling Green State University, and a second Master's Degree from University of North Carolina Greensboro.

I've known Ann since childhood; she was a multi-sport athlete and academically savvy. So it's no surprise that in her undergrad days, Ann played Division I basketball at Niagara University while also excelling in classes.

Because Ann had a demanding class, practice, and travel schedule, time management was key to her success. Ann shares how she adapted her college lifestyle to what "worked for her." Ann suggests the key to college success is for every student to find "processes" to help them thrive. Knowing that many people don't play college sports, we talked about how having activities (like work, internships, clubs, etc.) can actually help with time management--a huge skill for college success. And, she didn't forget to tell us about college FUN with people who have become lifelong friends.

Currently, Ann is a Principal at an elementary school while keeping up with her three active children. She continues with her love of teaching and athletics by coaching her kids' sports teams.

College Success Podcast!
The Ultimate HBCU Experience with Dr. Ghia Kelly

In this fourth episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School podcast, I had the honor of speaking with the inspirational Dr. Ghia Kelly. Ghia has a Bachelor's degree from Florida A & M University, a Master's Degree from Florida State University, and a professional doctorate from Bakke Graduate University. I met Ghia 14 years ago when we both worked as therapists. She was amazing then, but her credentials, education, and experience continues to skyrocket! Ghia is an ordained Elder in her church, certified life coach, mental health coach, trainer, and public speaker. She is an expert in domestic and sexual violence, racial justice, and spiritual identity and purpose. Ghia is an exemplar of success and makes it look easy--she does it all with grace and joy!

Ghia knew she wanted to attend an HBCU for undergrad. However, she couldn't have imagined how impactful that would be on her college experience! Ghia shared her insights on the benefits of HBCUs and how to maximize your experience there! My take away from the interview is that feeling like you "belong" (especially for black and brown people) matters in college. Having experiences of inclusion and pride in college encourages growth, both personally and professionally! Ghia also emphasized the importance of "staying on top of your deadlines" and networking while in college. And, she didn't forget to tell us how she had FUN at her HBCU!

Currently, Ghia works at a national organization while also owning her own spiritual and life coaching business. I attended her spiritual mentorship academy and I grew so much from the experience. She is one of the most encouraging and wisest women I know! You can find more information about Ghia at https://www.thegiftoftruth.com/

In this third episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with the inspiring Dr. Kristy Greene. Kristy has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, a Master's Degree from Holy Cross University, and a PhD from Florida State University. I met Kristy in our PhD program, and she continues to be a mentor to me in so many ways. Kristy is an amazing teacher, administrative leader, and also a "cool mom." Kristy keeps me laughing with her unfailing sense of humor and zest for life!

When Kristy left for undergrad, she had the support of her family to join a sorority. However, she was pleasantly surprised to learn sororities are more than fun and friendship. In fact, Kristy's relationship with her sorority continues to benefit her now, in both her drive to serve the community and in her leadership roles. Kristy shared how joining a sorority helped her to succeed in college more than she expected! Kristy provided her insight about some sorority stereotypes. And, she had wise words for those who may be interested in Greek life on campus.

In this second interview episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School podcast, the wonderful Dr. Jenna Scott was the guest of honor. Jenna has an undergrad degree in Family and Child Sciences (Florida State University), a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (Northwestern University), and a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy (Florida State University). She happens to be a colleague and great friend! In the time I've known Jenna, she's taught me how to laugh (when I may want to cry)!!!

Jenna started undergrad with a long-term vision of owning a fashion boutique in the heart of New Orleans. But after trying on different classes (and majors), Jenna found her passion to help others. Jenna provided great insight on how changing your mind is NOT a bad thing, and can actually get you on the right path. Jenna also had a lot of FUN in college!!! As she said, she wasn't afraid to "take risks" and that paid off for her socially and academically. She even joined the circus--you have to hear about that!

Currently, Jenna is a licensed marriage and family therapist working with individuals, couples, and families. She owns a private practice and also provides trainings to organizations and the community. One of Jenna's specialties is mindfulness, which she practices in her therapy and as a certified yoga instructor! In this very first interview episode of the Dr. Nari Jeter & The Prosper School podcast, I had the honor of speaking with Lexa Thompson, MBA. Lexa has an undergrad degree and MBA from Penn State University. She also happens to be my very best friend...I've known her since 3rd grade!

Lexa started college at a Penn State branch campus, confident in her choice of an engineering major. However, after spending some time in classes and the working world, she began having other thoughts. I won't spoil the plot twist, but it involves a major change in plans (pun intended)!

Lexa shared some experiences that helped her make two big decisions in her college career, including who helped her along the way! We also discussed what she loved about college and what made it fun for her!
