For a long time, I stuck to the idea that it was all temporary and that I would be the old me soon. I tried to hold onto every friendship, also those that didn’t serve me in my healing process.
Holding on to something that didn’t serve me anymore was making me sad and it causes even more stress for my brain. I was “waiting” for so long to become the old me again, but I was done with waiting, something needed to change.
In this podcast, I talk about my experience with losing friends and why this can be a positive thing.

In the first two years after sustaining my concussion, I often felt so hyper and restless. I find it difficult to describe this restless feeling, but when a member of the community shared more about it, I could totally relate to her words. She called it a hyper feeling, like your body urges for action. And another member mentioned it feels like you’re plugged into an electric socket. This is exactly how I felt, and in this episode I dive deeper into this.

In this episode, Gijs and I talk about what PDTR is, how it can help with head trauma and we dive into my experience with this treatment which I had in January. Want to read about my experience? Go to my blog: Click here. Interested in doing this P-DTR treatment with Gijs (in Amsterdam)? Or have any questions? Feel free to reach out to him on Instagram (@g_holthof) or send him an email at: ghpt@hotmail.com
I tried a new treatment, a P-DTR treatment). Gijs (located in Amsterdam who is a PDTR advanced practitioner) reached out to me and said he could help me with my concussion symptoms. I thought, let’s give this PDTR treatment a try. I had nothing to lose. So I went there in January and right now I feel ready to share my experience with this treatment. Prefer to read, go directly to my blog: click here. What is PDTR?PDTR means proprioceptive - Deep Tendon Reflex and was founded by the orthopedic surgeon, Dr. José Palomar. This is the first neurological manual therapy based on neurolgoy, neurophysology, biomechanics and basics of Applied Kinesiology. It doesn’t only treat head trauma but a wide spectrum of functional problems and solves, hormonal, chemical, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal and emotional dysfunctions as well. Many times I wished I just knew how long this would take. But on the other side if I knew it would take this long right after the accident it would have driven me crazy. In this way, it was a more gradual journey. Listen to hear about my healing timeline. I tell more about treatments, frustration, my emotions, loss and how I feel right now.

First of all, I get it, I have been there. I lost hope in my recovery during my first 2 years and I felt so emotional all the time after my concussion. There is nothing worse than losing hope in your recovery. But not getting help from doctors/therapists can result in you being in that negative spiral and not knowing how to get out of it. Listen to hear what helped me to get back hope and control.

At the beginning of my concussion recovery, I never thought that something could last this long. I remember my doctor told me that it could take weeks. Now I wish that I could only think in weeks instead of years. People around me made lots of comments, they tried to help me, but not all comments were helpful. I always felt pressure from people around me to get better sooner than I did. Especially from work, I often get the question: when are you coming back? Or the worst comment: aren’t you better yet?

It is common to feel a loss of self after a concussion when you lose so many things you used to be able to do - but there is hope. Cristabelle speaks with Silvie from The Concussion Community. Silvie struggled for years to find the right help and understand what was going on with her. Her concussion was even misdiagnosed as anxiety. The regular doctors she visited couldn’t address her symptoms, so she wasn’t getting help from them. Eventually, Silvie found the right concussion treatments and she is here to share what she has learned from her journey, offering hope to listeners to know that rebuilding your life is possible.

I struggled for years to find the right help and understand what was going on with me. The regular doctors I visited couldn't address my symptoms, so I wasn't getting any help from them. I felt misunderstood and lonely during my journey, which is exactly why I created these courses and this community.
There were 2 game-changers in my recovery, and I hope these things will help you as much as they did for me (and many others!)
Listen to hear about my game-changers.
I translated these game-changers into easy-to-digest courses. I share everything step by step so that you can implement them into your life without getting overwhelmed. More information.
During my concussion journey, it felt like I had to answer a lot of questions about my concussion symptoms/whiplash injury that I didn’t have an answer to. Doctors, my employer, friends, family, and other people around me asked me many questions. What did they ask? How did I respond?

If it’s not enough to have a concussion or TBI on top of that comes that some doctors don’t believe your symptoms because there is no proof for it. Every time this happened, I felt even more alone and lost and I panicked about it. What if they couldn’t fix my problems? How would I be able to do that myself? Listen to this podcast to hear about my experiences with doctors and what helped me when a doctor didn't believe or understand my symptoms..

It took me so long to accept that my life had changed, that I am not the old me anymore. I was fighting for so long to become the person I was before the accident. It felt like my life was on pause, and I waited, searched for concussion treatments, and took a lot of rest. But after doing this for a long time, I was done waiting to get better. What if I wouldn’t?
I don’t want to spend more years waiting when nothing will change. I needed to enjoy life exactly how it is right now. I learned acceptance and moving forward can go hand in hand. Listen to hear more about this and what 7 things helped me with acceptance.

In the beginning, everyone seemed to care and asked me how I was doing all the time and if I was able to do things. After a few months, I started to get worried, as I didn’t improve at all. Friends didn’t visit me that often anymore. First, I started to feel lonely because I still couldn’t go back to work, I missed the contact with my colleagues, the Friday afternoon drinks, the weekend hanging out with friends, just my normal life. It felt like I wasn’t on the same level as everyone else anymore. Listen to hear about 5 things that helped me to feel less lonely.

2021 was the year that I started with this community. It’s a big change for me because I couldn’t do any work for almost 3 years due to my concussion symptoms. Starting this community was overwhelming, helpful, fun, stressful and fulfilling. All at the same time. It sounded so easy in my head to create a community for people with concussion symptoms and I just started without even thinking that it could be too much to handle. Listen for more! About this episode: Last year in November, I went on a vacation (a long stay of 1,5 month) and traveled all the way to Indonesia. I hear you thinking, Indonesia during covid? Yes, I did. I have friends living there, and my boyfriend was in Indonesia for some work so it felt like the right choice.
It was my first long flight after sustaining my concussion so I was really nervous about how it would go with my concussion symptoms. Listen to hear about my experience!

About this episode: When I sustained my concussion people really cared in the beginning. They visited me often at my home, my work sent me flowers and cards and people texted me on a daily/weekly basis. It felt like everyone really cared and I didn’t have to explain that I wasn’t feeling well, people just knew it. After a while, people didn’t send me that many text messages anymore, I didn’t get flowers or cards from work. My work asked me when I would be back, people made more comments like: ‘oh you’re still having symptoms? But you look great’. Because I looked fine people, always assumed that I would feel great too. Listen for more!
This was one of my biggest struggles, having a setback and not knowing why. Sometimes I know that I just did too much and of course, I didn’t like those setbacks but at least I knew why I got them. The hardest thing for me was having a setback, dealing with my concussion symptoms and not knowing why I had them. Listen for more!

Sometimes, when I tell people about my symptoms, I get a reaction like, “I am tired, too”, “I have a headache, too,” or, “We all have bad days; not every day can be perfect,” but saying things like this aren't always helping.

In this podcast episode, I was interviewed by brain hemorrhage survivor Melissa Gough from The Brain Game Changer Podcast. Around the 6 month mark, Melissa was struggling with her recovery and reached out to a couple of online brain injury support groups. That is where she found my free e-Book and was curious to know more!
I share my story about the scooter accident and how it took a couple of years to receive an informed and accurate diagnosis, my journey to Cognitive FX in Utah and then wanting to create this wonderful community, The Concussion Community. Even though Melissa and I experienced very different types of brain trauma, and live on opposite sides of the world, we were able to resonate in trying to understand our symptoms and what life is going to look like going forward. We are both grateful for the supportive people we have met along our recovery. Melissa and I share a common purpose of sharing our stories and the adversity of others, so people do not feel alone.

During my concussion recovery, I had a lot of bad days when my concussion symptoms were the worst. During those bad days, I just needed to be home to get as much rest I as needed. Sometimes, this meant that I had to cancel some appointments because I just couldn’t be surrounded by people. So, when I was outside the house, people saw me at my best, and they supposed that I must have been healed or doing great again.

During the first 2 years, I could only see what I had lost as a result of my concussion. But now, after 4 years, I am able to see the things that I gained during my concussion recovery. So, for everyone who is in the phase of just seeing the negative, please keep in mind that things will change. Nothing lasts forever unless you mean it to.

When you have a concussion or post-concussion syndrome, you know that each day will be different. On some days, you can do a lot of things; on other days, you just can’t. In my experience, this was so hard to explain to others, and I still struggle to explain myself on harder days.

I know it may sound weird to some people, but during the COVID-19 situation, I finally felt less different than others. I am not sure about you, but the quarantine wasn’t that hard for me because I already knew how it felt to be at home all the time, dealing with my concussion symptoms / head injury. To not go to restaurants or parties or hang out until late in the evening.

As we all know, there is no quick fix when it comes to healing from a concussion. If there was one, it wouldn’t be a hell of a search to find the right treatments to heal from a concussion. To keep it clean and short, I decided to record two episodes about what treatments I tried in my concussion journey. In this episode, I will share what treatments I tried during my first two years. In the next one, I will share what treatments I tried after my first two years.

Before my accident, I never had any issues with one of those pillars. My life felt stable; I was never sick, almost happy all the time, had a lovely job and enjoyed my social life. But then, one accident changed everything. I lost my health, felt emotionally unstable, couldn’t enjoy my social life anymore and lost my job. No wonder I lost my balance in life. Listen for more!

When I talk about “not knowing”, I mean that I had no idea what to do to get better—or even if I would ever get better. I wondered if should focus on just accepting that I had a concussion, or on finding to help me heal. The worst part was that no one could tell me if I was ever going to get better. Listen for more!

I will never forget that day. May 23rd in 2017. I went home on my scooter and had an accident; I bumped into another scooter. I remembered that I thought I was lucky, but a few days later, I started to feel worse. Those days became weeks, those weeks become months, and before I knew it, I’d been “sick” for 1.5 years. Since the moment I got my concussion, my sleep has changed. I had a hard time falling asleep; I woke up many times during the night, and it felt like my brain was always awake. During my first year, I had no clue what to do and just used sleeping pills to fall asleep easier. It didn’t feel like that was the right way and within the next year, I learned a lot about how I could improve my sleep naturally. Listen for more!

Healing from a concussion isn’t just a straight process. We all have made this experience. It’s always one step back and two steps forward.
