Welcome to the Black & Raww Podcast, this week I speak with Dr Rob Eschmann, a dedicated social work scholar with a master's and Ph.D., brings his wealth of knowledge and experience to the forefront. His academic journey, characterized by privilege and support, has fuelled his passion for making a difference in communities.
One of the podcast's highlights is the deep dive into Rob's groundbreaking book, which investigates how technology shapes our experiences of racism. Through compelling stories shared by college students, they shed light on incidents of racism both on and off campus. They emphasize the importance of resistance and resilience in the face of racism, whether in virtual spaces or the physical world.
The podcast doesn't shy away from addressing the power of students in challenging racism online, discussing the nuances of responding to microaggressions, and the impact of community support and timing. Rob and Tino reveal how online communication empowers individuals to articulate thoughts effectively, engage in nuanced discussions, and foster supportive communities.
While they acknowledge the challenges in translating online activism into real-world change, they express hope in the determination of today's youth.
Technology's role in activism is another captivating subject explored by the hosts. They underline the significance of everyday resistance and the prevalence of racist abuse on social media platforms, particularly within the world of sports. Additionally, Rob and Tino share their personal experiences and strategies for preparing their children to navigate and comprehend the complexities of racism in society.
Open communication within families is a recurring theme in the podcast, touching on topics as complex as prison abolition. The hosts discuss the necessity of societal change and support systems to address the root causes of crime and create a more equitable society.
Furthermore, Rob and Tino delve into the notion of racism being concealed and how online spaces can unveil it, raising awareness and fostering change. They emphasize the importance of educating young people about racism and equipping them with the tools to combat it online and offline.
In the "Black and Raww Podcast," Rob and Tino underscore the vital role of teaching children about racism, emphasizing historical knowledge and understanding structural limitations. Their ultimate goal is to inspire the next generation to actively engage in anti-oppressive work and stand alongside marginalized communities.

On today’s episode of the podcast, you’ll hear from Kwamane Harris. Kwamane has worked in various social care settings in the US. He is also the Author of Pushing the Generation forward. My book is designed to encourage children, young people and adults to find their purpose by empowering the next generation. This means that despite the trauma, hardship, poverty, oppression, racism, and generational curses we’ve experienced in life we have to develop the mindset to Push the Generations Forward for our children’s children.
Kwamane comes onto the podcast to talk about his new book, how we can build positive relationships with young people, mental health within social care, intergenerational wealth and how the next generation can be supported in reaching their full potential.
Here is a little about Kwamane’s book:
“Pushing the Generations Forward” is a positive mindset that shifts focus from the hardships of one’s life to an idea of hope and a mindset of pushing towards a better future, pushing past all of the tough times so that you can make a better future for the next generation. This paradigm shift replaces the struggle for survival with the opportunity for personal growth, the discovery of a special Calling and the creation of one's best self. Significantly, a Purpose centred outside of oneself, with the goal of building strength and resilience, not just for ourselves, but for future generations, is an integral part of the process of Pushing the Generations Forward.
