The lowly shepherds were the first to hear this news and we’re told “Fear Not, I bring you good news that will cause great joy.” Fear not? In this sermon our Good Shepherd sermon series in Mark 6 with Jesus feeding the five thousand. After hearing the news of his cousin, John the Baptist beheading Jesus wanted to find respite along with his disciples. Grieving, Jesus literally plays the role of the shepherd by providing a banquet for those who are pressed against Him. This display provides a stark contrast to Israels Shepherd of the day, in Herod Antipas. Because the Pharisees & Teachers of the Law were criticizing him for eating with sinners and tax collectors, Jesus shares 3 parables in 1 to highlight that the Good Shepherd has indeed come in their midst. God's people are in a constant battle for where they put their trust and affections; their leaders, too, with their shepherding responsibilities have swung from gross negligence to overbearing brutality. Life From God is a posture that values God to the degree He is useful. The short of it is ugly; God exists to serve you. The parable of the two sons (Luke 15) highlights this approach perfectly as both sons wanted the Father's things rather than the Father himself.
How do you know if you approach God this way?

-Consider how you view and attempt to change your circumstances
-Consider what you treasure the most and how you would obtain it

Life Over God recognizes that God has created laws and principles that govern the world. This posture reduces faith to principles, divine laws, and applicable instructions without God needing to be involved. We are apart of God's redemptive plan to build His kingdom. At a point in history Nehemiah took the mantle to help God's people rebuild the physical walls of Jerusalem in the face of opposition and threat. This text points to a greater Nehemiah in Jesus who does not build a physical wall but the body of Christ. This body is Gods workmanship ready to do good works and equipped to build His kingdom.

Jesus is our good shepherd (John 10:11) and lays his life down for the sheep (us.). We stray and look for "greener grass" all the time, and subsequently struggle to believe and trust that God is leading and caring for us. We often wrestle with a mindset of scarcity and make decisions out of the fear that there wont be enough. Psalm 23 provides a look into a heart at peace and a soul that treasures their shepherd. How do learn to Treasure the Shepherd? To love to listen to his voice and find ourselves at peace even as we walk through the valleys? It begins by knowing how much the Shepherd treasures us! And so the Book of Acts comes to an end with a shout of triumph. It is the peak of Luke's story. Luke never told us what happened to Paul, whether he was executed or released as this was not Luke's purpose. Luke gave us his scheme of Acts when he told how Jesus commanded his followers to bear witness for him in Jerusalem and all over Judaea and Samaria and away to the ends of the earth ( Acts 1:8). Chapter 28 is a resounding victors cry as the Gospel has reached the center of the known world.

The wonderful interplay between God plans and our intentions. How do we make sense of our best laid plans and intentions to do God's will, serve Him, help others know Him, etc? We know God has His own timing, and the best path for us. It often takes us to places, and to people we weren't anticipating or expecting. And with a bit of reflection, we usually come to a place where we're happy God's plans worked out the way they did. Consider the conversion of Lydia in Acts 16:11-15. It wasn't the plan for Paul and Silas to be there to meet her, per se. But it happened, and praise God they did. Lydia is one of the most encouraging conversion stories for a number of reasons. Today we begin our study in the book of Acts. Its a time capsule of the early church. Everything we read in this account is under the wonderful light of Jesus' resurrection. This sermon's aim is to draw attention to the fact that Jesus woke from the dead and it made all the difference for the 12 as it should for us. A great exercise is to contemplate the resurrection and ask: what else? so what? and now what? We don't want to just consider the conclusion that Jesus rose from the dead, but let it truly provide the clarity and activity of our lives. It wakes us up, grants us repentance, and encourages us to live with a kingdom view, and "Jesus Is Lord" as the banner over the direction of our lives. Join us as we plan to spend the rest of 2021 and the First Quarter of 2022 becoming closer as body of Christ, striving to go after the Way, and being more like Jesus to Roanoke and its surrounding areas. Acts will help grace set our hearts aflame to live with the same sacrificial enthusiasm that our brothers and sisters lived on these pages. Never should such enthusiasm be born out of guilt or a sense of duty, but rather a depth of understanding in how Christ gave all.
