Thunder Country Ag and Garden Report with New York Farm Bureau Manager of Public Affairs Steve Ammerman reviews New York Farm Bureau’s 2023 Market Basket Survey that reports the price of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner saw a small increase compared to last year's meal. The average total price, which includes a 16-pound turkey and other common items found on a holiday dinner table, is $70.70, or about a six-percent increase over last year’s price. Plus Congress extends the current Farm Bill and NYFB upcoming convention in December.

Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCE) has received funding from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture to create a Beginner Farmer Program. The Beginner Farmer Program will aid beginner farmers in the Catskills-Hudson Valley Region through group training, one-on-one conversations, farm visits, farmer to farmer mentoring, and an intensive learning cohort.

NYCAMH is facing serious cuts in farm safety programming and trainings if state budget funding does not increase after more than a decade of stagnation. Recently a long list of agricultural groups and agencies in New York State wrote to Albany lawmakers working on the state budget to consider increasing funding for the organization. Host Mike Sakell speaks with Marcus Hanley of Hudson Valley Foie Gras and Sergio Saravia of La Belle Farms following the recent decision by NYS Ag and Markets regarding NYC Local Law 202 which would ban the sale of foie gras in New York City. The ruling says you can not "unreasonably restrict farmers operations with an agricultural district" with a local law. This saves a large Sullivan County industry and its contribution to the local economy.

Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced a $10.7 million award to construct a new food distribution warehouse for the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley in the town of Montgomery. Speaking on the Thunder Country Ag and Garden Report on Thunder 102 and 104-5, Regional Food Bank of NE New York CEO Molly Nichol says the expansion has been a project she has been working on the past two years.
The new distribution warehouse will provide increased capacity to obtain, store, and distribute food donations to 400 member agencies in six counties in the lower Hudson Valley that includes Sullivan County.
