The Daddyhomeschools Podcast: Recent Episodes

Jack Stewart

I'm the only single-daddy homeschooling three children I've ever met. Hear what makes me tick, why my daughter wants to start a business in rural China, and why my 3yr old tells strangers that 'dangerous time,' is his favourite part of the day.

How do I cope with three full-time?

Where is Christ in our education?

Why is there Lego in my coffee?

Some teens will hop from thinker to thinker, based on who shouts the loudest, but we want them to be rooted in something even deeper than our parental authority.

Also, how can I help my Eng students enjoy English, even in preparation for an exam??

Establish ideas that create the atmosphere out of which springs action.

You don't have to understand how good ideas produce a fruitful life, you just have to sow them, and see the harvest.

Love you

I had a student with disabilities who wouldn't speak until I gave up my self.

First interact for the sheer pleasure of relationship, then listen, then teach.

What a dream about custard has to do with a growing shadow in our lives and how I want to a shine a light there.

Are incompetent teens a result of controlling parents?

Charlotte Mason says any decision made for the child that should be made BY the child is an encroachment on the child's rights.

I want my daughter to withstand evil with selfless wisdom. I arranged a city-wide treasure hunt to dramatise the story of the Daughter of Zion.

I also answer some questions:

3 day/week home-schooling

Prepping for Uni

Book recommendations

Soli Deo gloria

I was going to give some advise on how to get some daddy/mommy time, but my 3yr old interrupted. My response was so spectacularly awful that it made me rethink what I was saying.

I also give advice for the man-child phenomenon.

Listen to my self-esteem deteriorate through the episode as I wonder if a parents attention really can be in two places at once.

I'm trying to get rid of the internet completely from the house.

I find it so hard to relax with it on. And it supresses my appetite for a deeply connected life.

The pandemic has destroyed so much. Can we build a new life?

My 3yr old tries explaining homeschooling to a stranger... again.

Also, I recount a wonderful moment I had at a ruins at dusk, and why looking at the sky can teach us about education.

Let's be need-driven, not personality driven. Let's be like flowers unfolding upward.

In this episode I have a chat with my mummy. Sorry about the sound quality - I'll figure it out for next time.

She home-educated me when it was rather less trendy. She tells the story of writing letters to homeschoolers in order to start meetups before Facebook.

She gives her advice for new homeschoolers.

We talked about what I was like as a child and about a certain lobster telephone.

Her excellent journal for new homeschoolers can be found here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Home-Education-First-place-think/dp/1089519036

I end up shouting orders at them or I get so distressed with their rudeness that I'm pleading with them emotionally.

But I ought be regulating my own emotions and asking the types of questions that will lead them to see the true character of their actions.

This means allowing more time for little pep talks, focusing on what I value about them, and being able to accept them through their persistently bad decisions. I'm glad my Heavenly Father does.

Fathers don't seem to read parenting books. I think this reflects quite a deep gender difference.

I recently encountered Charlotte Mason's method for teaching history. It starts with local history. I'm not a big fan, but I'm reluctantly starting to agree.

The best things that have come out of my children's mouths this week.

How the mercy of two homeschool mums and a mentor changed me.

I want to wait diligently in the harsh winter night, not wait for the ambiguous dawn. I want to love first, and awaken the dawn.

There were two friends who saved my mental health by checking up on me every day and basically deciding to be my best friends.

I had a dream that I was being assaulted by strangers but I had a call from my mother who loved me even though I was neither good nor competent.

I answer a question about delighting in handicrafts, and I'm encouraged by another homeschool dad!

Go well in Christ.

I recount a hilariously awkward encounter with a homeschool mum.

I straighten out some misconceptions about my singleness.

I encourage anyone who feels like their family is on rocky ground to consider a Lord who defies the natural laws of decay.

First I play a little ditty by my 5yr-old.

Then I give five tips for helping a child to listen: Grow Trust, Exercise, Express Feelings, Undergird the chapter with ideas.

It feels like we're speaking into nothingness when we speak to a distracted child but that's exactly what God did! Keep going!

I take a question about helping a pre-schooler ease into more formal work and helping them persevere.

I explain that learning is a part of life and should grow from life. Putting them in the way of things worth learning will eventually foster the discipline to keep learning.

I want to help my daughter persevere with the sewing machine by helping her feel that it is a wonderful task. Ignoring feelings 'ransack the truth' by making the truth seem boring and ugly.

I explain how I find 'gospel moments' by giving up time to help her delight in the delightful.
