Voyageur: The Podcast
Published twice a year since 1984, Voyageur is a nonprofit magazine dedicated to preserving the history of a 26-county area of greater Northeast Wisconsin. Each issue highlights the historic people, places, and events from the region’s past. Voyageur is distributed to homes, schools, libraries, businesses, and other locations throughout Wisconsin, in nearly all fifty states, and abroad. Voyageur is published by the Brown County Historical Society in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
In this special triple threat crossover of the Cannonball, Serious Fun, and Voyageur podcasts, your host, Eric Morgan, talks Star Wars and nostalgia with co-hosts Bryan Carr, Ryan Martin, and Chuck Rybak.
Our show was directly inspired by "Star Wars: The Nostalgia Awakens," an exhibit of Star Wars toys on display earlier in 2021 at the Oshkosh Public Museum. The impressive collection of action figures, ships, and playsets is the lifetime work of Jarrod Roll, a Star Wars enthusiast and museum curator from Onalaska, Wisconsin. In celebration of summer and our last podcast for our first season, Voyageur: The Podcast chats with Jeff Ash and Kurt Blumenau, authors of two fascinating articles on the history of baseball in Northeast Wisconsin which both appear in the Summer/Fall 2021 issue of Voyageur: Northeast Wisconsin's Historical Review.
In this episode, the Voyageur team talks with Heidi Satori, author of "Close Connections: From Pearl Harbor to the Twenty-First Century," which will be featured in the magazine's forthcoming Summer/Fall 2021 issue. "Close Connections" chronicles two parallel stories spanning from the attack on Pearl Harbor to modern times: that of the Smith family, of De Pere, Wisconsin, during the Second World War and that of the author, as a military spouse and mother.
The Voyageur team talks with UW-Green Bay alumnus Evan Ash, author of "COMBAT on the Homefront: The Cold War Decency Crusade Strikes Green Bay," featured in the Winter/Spring 2021 issue of the magazine. Evan's article examines the efforts of COMBAT -- the Council on Movies, Books, Audio, and Television -- to protect Green Bay area youth from "indecent" literature during the height of the Cold War in the 1950s and 1960s.
During this season of giving thanks, visiting family and friends, and exchanging of stories, on this episode we explore a brief history of oral tradition and share family stories from Wisconsin.
For the magazine’s inaugural podcast, we will be exploring the history and haunted happenings at the National Railroad Museum in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin in celebration of the scariest season of the year. With the help of an interview that Autumn arranged between the magazine’s social media team and the National Railroad Museum, we will discuss the origins of the museum in the 1950s, some of its most popular exhibits, and at the end of our show, the exciting ghost stories present at the museum since the 1970s.
