Most of my clients are over the age of 50, and I’ve noticed that as you get closer to retirement, your thought process evolves. Instead of one long discussion, I thought it would be more beneficial to break it down into manageable segments. This way, you can focus on the timeframe that’s most relevant to you.
In this first episode, we’ll talk about what you should be doing 10 years out from retirement. Next week, we’ll cover the 5-year mark, and the following week, we’ll discuss the final year before you retire.
Stay tuned for next week’s episode, where we’ll discuss what to focus on 5 years out from retirement. If you have any questions or want to learn more about financial planning, feel free to reach out to me at ProPathFinancial.com. See you next time!

Where will your retirement income come from, and how will it be taxed? This is a crucial question every retiree needs to understand.
A client recently shared an intriguing Instagram post that highlighted how the average American retires at 64 and may only enjoy about 12 years of good health in retirement. This sparked a discussion about the importance of investing in health alongside financial assets.
Your health significantly impacts your retirement income strategy. A mix of taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free accounts allows you to control your taxable income each year, helping to manage expenses like Medicare surcharges and tax brackets.

Retirement is Not Just One Thing: The traditional view of retirement—working until a certain age and then sailing off into the sunset—is just one of many paths. Whether you’re considering the FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early), semi-retirement, or even a career shift, it’s crucial to define what retirement means to you. Understanding your vision will help you create a tailored financial plan that aligns with your goals.

Welcome back to the Functional Retirement Classroom, where we trade boring lectures for laughs, spreadsheets, and slightly-too-real truths about your financial future. Today’s lesson? Longevity! (Yes, that thing where you live way longer than you thought—and your bank account wasn’t ready for it.)
Did you know there’s a 70% chance one half of a non-smoking couple aged 65 will make it to 90? That’s not a fun fact—it’s a financial wake-up call. In this episode, we dive into what it really means to plan for the long haul (like, potentially 30 years of retirement-long). Spoiler: if you treat your savings like a Vegas weekend, you might end up with a very quiet final act.
So grab your coffee, crack open that dusty life expectancy chart, and let's make sure your golden years don’t end in bronze.

When you're getting advice—especially about your money or retirement—don’t just nod and smile like you’re at a grandkid’s school play. Ask questions! Stuff like, “How do you know that?” or “Why is this the right choice for me?” The goal isn’t to be rude, it’s to make sure the person advising you understands you. A good advisor won’t hand you a cookie-cutter answer—they’ll dig in, get to know your situation, and help you make decisions that fit your life, not someone else’s. So go ahead, ask away. You've earned the right.

Retirement is often perceived as a definitive endpoint in one’s career—a time when individuals stop working altogether. However, as discussed in the 50th episode of the Functional Retirement Podcast, retirement is much more nuanced than simply ceasing to work. It represents a significant life transition, fundamentally about gaining control over your time and life, allowing you to pursue what you truly want to do.

In this episode of the The Functional Retirement Podcast, host Thatcher Taylor discusses the importance of understanding market volatility and its impact on retirement planning. He reflects on the 2008-2009 market crash, emphasizing that many investors who panicked and sold during downturns often locked in losses, while those who stayed invested saw significant recovery.
Thatcher advocates for a bucketing approach to investing, where assets are segmented based on when they will be needed, allowing retirees to weather market fluctuations without jeopardizing their financial security. He encourages listeners to focus on controllable factors, such as spending habits and mindset, and highlights the long-term benefits of remaining invested, even during market downturns.

"High portfolio variability can lead to sleepless nights for clients, which can then result in poor investment decisions."
Exploring the Viability of a 100% Equity Portfolio in Retirement
In the most recent episode of The Functional Retirement Podcast, Thatcher Taylor delves into the concept of maintaining a 100% equity portfolio during retirement. While acknowledging that this approach may not suit everyone, the host suggests that it could be a viable option depending on individual circumstances and risk tolerance. The discussion underscores the importance of comprehending the inherent variability of a portfolio when selecting the most suitable investment strategy for retirees.
The episode showcases a real-life client scenario where transitioning from a conservative model to a moderate 60-40 portfolio with increased equity exposure resulted in higher retirement spending while still ensuring a high probability of success. This example illustrates how a shift towards equities can impact income distribution and overall financial outcomes during retirement.
Moreover, the episode references Morningstar research indicating that a 100% equity portfolio can lead to larger distributions in retirement but also carries increased risk and the potential for lower assets at the end of life. The research suggests that the optimal asset allocation and distribution strategy depend on factors such as risk tolerance, probability of failure, and desired spending levels.
Ultimately, the episode concludes that while a 100% equity portfolio may not be suitable for all retirees, finding the right allocation that balances risk and return based on individual circumstances is crucial. By considering factors like longevity risk, inflation, and market volatility, retirees can tailor their investment approach to effectively meet their financial goals and retirement needs.

In this episode of the Functional Retirement Podcast, host Thatcher Taylor interviews Stevyn Guinnip, a specialist in health and wealth. They discuss the convergence of health and retirement planning, and how it affects longevity risk, income distribution, protection, estate planning, and everything that goes into an optimal retirement. They share actionable items that listeners can use in their day-to-day life to increase their wealth and health, and how promoting health and wealth can benefit both financial advisors and their clients. The interview also covers the impact of COVID-19 on the industry and how it has affected business growth.
The episode introduces the three W's for health: walk, water, and sunlight. Walking is an excellent way to improve physical and mental health, and the speaker recommends walking more than one currently does. The second W, water, involves drinking 80 ounces of water in the first 10 hours of the day, following Dr. Huberman's recommendations. Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health. The third W, sunlight, is not explicitly discussed in this transcript, but the episode emphasizes the importance of getting sunlight on the eyes in the morning to regulate the body's internal clock and prepare for deep sleep later in the day.
The episode also stresses the importance of managing stress and taking breaks throughout the day to prepare the body for restful sleep at night. Disconnecting the brain from the body throughout the day can result in a hyperactive state at night, preventing deep sleep. Improving the quality of sleep is crucial for overall health and wellness.

Understanding the Difference between Risk and Volatility in Retirement Planning
Understanding risk and volatility is important before diving into the world of investing and preparing for retirement.
In this solo episode, I'll share with you the difference between risk and volatility using my experience watching my two kids alone for five days. This made me realize that parenthood is a balancing act between allowing children to grow and try new things while not exposing them to catastrophe, just as investment and retirement are.
Risk and volatility are not the same and should not be interchangeably used, and by understanding the difference between the two, retirees can make informed decisions to ensure an optimal retirement.
I’ll also share how you can determine your personal risks to be able to find stability when it comes to risk and reward.

✅Three questions to ask yourself throughout the episode:
1️⃣ Who here thinks inflation will calm down and when?
2️⃣ Who here has had problems with buying a house or is waiting?
3️⃣ Have you sat down and put pen to paper on how inflation could affect retirement?
✅Why is there inflation?
➡️An influx of unexpected cash due to covid relief programs.
➡️An increase in household demand. People want to buy more stuff.
➡️Supply chain shortages.
➡️The war in Ukraine has led to increased fuel costs.
➡️The presence of a strong labor market.
🛑How does this affect your retirement?
1️⃣Stock market
2️⃣Unemployment is low
3️⃣Inflation keeps costs higher for goods, and services, including food.
4️⃣Mortgages on a second house, Credit cards, loans, HELOCs, can be more expensive.
5️⃣Other lending or costs like healthcare, college education for grandkids, and travel costs.

How does fitness impact your retirement plan and what can YOU do now to prepare?
I’ve seen it all too many times— someone who doesn’t plan their finances well and also has bad health can single handly destroy their retirement plan. On the other hand, I’ve seen people with copious amounts of money yet poor physical health also destroy their own happiness in retirement. Today we’re evaluating both of these scenarios and discuss how fitness and financial planning are cut from the same cloth.
In today’s episode we’ll discuss physical guidelines for Americans, as well as six different areas that your health will impact your retirement plan.
SHOW NOTES: Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans found here: https://health.gov/sites/default/files/2019-09/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf

The 401k has 4 options when it comes to handling assets after you leave your company for whatever reason. We discuss how each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. There is not a silver bullet and each option needs to be evaluated when the time comes.
Option 1: Stay in the Plan
Option 2: Roll Over to an IRA
Option 3: Take a Lump-Sum Distribution
Option 4: Convert All or Some to a Roth IRA
We also talk about how some people are just natural savers and investors, like natural athletes in sports. Some people just seem to naturally be able to build wealth. In addition, there are some people that aren't natural athletes that need to work on their wealth.
If you have a 401k that has become your biggest investment bucket, maybe taking a look at your financial picture can help you become a better wealth builder.
Thatcher sits down to chat about the purpose of merging fitness and finance into one mission. It is rarely discussed how important financial planning is for the healthy individual and how taking care of your body and mind can lead to a longer life. Thatcher also talks about the Iron Cowboy, James Lawrence, and his journey to 100 days straight of completing an IronMan Triatholon. Then we have a Q&Q session discussing what to do if you are just starting to save in your 50's, what training program I am using, and how smooth is fast, not slow is smooth.
