Our host, Luke Ridden, is the Head Distiller, Great-Grandson and Owner of Granddad Jack's Craft Distillery located in Queensland. As the youngest commercial distiller in Australia, he's respectful to the craft of distilling but somewhat of a disruptor. He brings a youthful, modern approach to his recipes that regularly surprise and impress even the most discerning gin connoisseurs. Luke is a determined & hardworking entrepreneur and started in the business with his Dad when he was only 21. Now 25, he enjoys taking the road less travelled when it comes to business and telling the tales of his childhood through his creations, bringing to life the memories of his Great-Granddad Jack. Luke appreciates good quality spirits and listening to people’s stories about their own family and life experiences.

Join Luke on the Speakeasy this week as we chat with Amanda Walker, triathlete, local legend, and marketing & events coordinator.

Recently Amanda ventured out on her own to experience something different and left her long career with Morris International to look after marketing and events for Genesis. A brand dedicated to the experience. This isn’t the first time Amanda has worked with a luxury car brand as she has also worked with Porsche and met her partner, former race car driver, Craig Baird.

Amanda is training for her very first ironman after competing in triathlons for the past four years. She’s very excited for June when her training will be put to the test & after doing our very own Granddad Jack’s enticer triathlon, we cannot wait to work ourselves up to her level.

We hope you’re enjoying meeting people from the community that have become family over the years. In this episode, we had some very interesting chats about a lot of things.

Join Luke on the Speakeasy this week as we chat with one of the kindest and most caring people we know.

You may remember this Gold Coast local from the Mango Liqueur we created using her backyard mangoes! Yvonne Hubbard is a fantastic cook and ex-swim schoolteacher and always lights up the room when she visits.

Yvonne is always surprising the Tasting Room team with delicious home-baked goods and loves to make new friends when she visits. After moving to the Gold Coast with her family in 2019 she fell in love with the area, the relaxed environment, and the community. Yvonne has lived on four continents over her lifetime and raised three beautiful children (one of whom now works at the GC tasting room). From hospitality and hotels to being a swim schoolteacher and now working in admin and events planning, Yvonne has enjoyed it all but most importantly the opportunity to have taught little kids an important life skill – swimming.

We spoke with Yvonne about how she got here and why she loves it so much, the changing Gold Coast food and drink scene and her insane decision to become a swim schoolteacher.

Join Luke on the Speakeasy this week as we chat with local artist, comedian, writer and Miami Tasting Room regular.

After wandering into the Tasting Room with his two pups one afternoon, Trev Sutton has been a Miami regular who enjoys a good drink and some banter. After hearing his stories, we knew he had to be a guest at the Speakeasy to share some of his very colourful life. From stand-up comedy and drag shows in a church to writing crime novels after being a night-time mail sorter and seeing the 3 am Sydney crowd to children’s books, to working with the NSW police in their radio network property management, he is most proud to have raised his four children and for his very amazing paintings.

Every week we love hearing more stories from Trev in the Tasting Room and hope you do too. In this episode, we had some very interesting chats about a lot of things.

Join Luke on the Speakeasy this week as we chat with a local signwriter & very talented Artist about the ongoing changes in the industry, what he enjoys most and how he is spending his time in retirement.

Ian Sharman has been doing all our custom signs and artwork, by hand and only by eye since we opened back in 2018. He’s an absolute weapon and a very talented artist who has been painting for over 55+ years. Ian started off as an apprentice then a commercial artist and after only 18 months of working for someone else, he went out on his own and created a successful business with staff and apprentices. Recently retiring from self-employment, enjoying retirement and travel, Ian can now choose the jobs and people he wants to do and luckily for us, we’re one of them! We’ve challenged him over the years with lots of different brushwork substrates including brick, timber and blockwork and he’s delivered every single piece. Sadly, in a world of technology and graphic design, this type of brushwork and old school talent is hard to find now as this skill is no longer taught in TAFE or practised as it once was.

Can he race as well as he can paint? You can watch the episode & Bootlegger challenge on our YouTube here: https://youtu.be/BNC3lw6GX6k

Jungle, as he is known by all, is the owner of Gas Up Automotive in Albion. A real character who is lending a helping hand around the community. Jungle has been mechanically minded all his life and loves to figure shit out. He’s taught himself many things and is known around the neighbourhood as the man who can fix anything – if he can’t, no one can. Gas Up Automotive was one of the first on the street and has witnessed the area change over the years and has some cool stories to share.

David Bone is the Founder and very respected Sommelier behind Cuttings Wine Company, established in 1994 to offer something new to the Queensland wine market. With a background and passion in hospitality, David made a strategic decision to focus on a niche market over ten years ago. His company have been hand selecting the finest artisan producers from all around the world ever since and specialise in supplying Brisbane’s top bars & restaurants and independent retailers with the very best wines.

They only represent family-owned wineries and continuously taste everything in their portfolio to ensure every bottle meets their high standards.

In this episode of the Speakeasy podcast, we chat with David about his companies, the increasing demand for natural wines, what people are currently enjoying, how they choose their portfolios and the simple things they do well to set themselves apart from the competition.

We filmed with David at the end of December last year and spoke about how the neighbourhood had changed over the past decade and what it was like during the 2011 floods. Listening to the conversations now of our Brisbane episodes after recently going through the 2022 floods hits a little different.

Like many of our neighbours, David and the Cuttings Wine Company were devastatingly affected and caught off guard. More than 100,000 bottles of wine, delivery vans, equipment, furniture, and the cellar room were damaged or destroyed. Everyone came together to help each other clean, clear and rebuild from the disaster. It’s incredible how quickly the neighbourhood has been able to open, some in more capacity than others.

David Bone and Luke Ridden have been working together on something very exciting (and delicious) that was able to come to life after such a difficult time. Stay tuned for updates on this very exciting product release.

Luke Ridden is the Head Distiller, Great-Grandson and Owner of Granddad Jack's Craft Distillery located in Queensland, Australia. As the youngest commercial distiller in Australia, he's respectful to the craft of distilling but somewhat of a disruptor when it comes to flavour combinations and brings a youthful, modern freshness to his recipes resulting in unique tasting gins which regularly surprise and impress even the most discerning of gin connoisseurs. Instinctively inquisitive by nature, Luke started in the business as a determined and creative-thinking 21-year-old and enjoys taking the road less travelled when it comes to business alongside his dad, David. He enjoys telling the tales of his childhood through his creations and the memories of his Great-Granddad Jack and listening to people’s stories about their own family and life experiences.

Dan Pappas is the innovative founder behind the legendary brand Fonzie Abbott, who followed a dream to make good coffee that he could drink every morning. A former race car driver, Dan was inspired to create a brand he was genuinely passionate about. He brought a coffee roaster in 2010 and set up shop, and this later paved the way for the brewery and later the distillery. As the only roastery, brewery and distillery in the world under one roof, Dan has been successfully serving up delicious brews & spirits to the local Albion community and nationally for almost ten years! On the first episode of the Speakeasy, we chat with Dan about starting Fonzie Abbott, racing cars, the history of the Albion neighbourhood and the 2011 floods.

This one hits a little different now since after filming, our distillery and neighbours went under again in the 2022 Brisbane floods. We've all since started the rebuild and re-opening of Collingwood & Fox Street in Albion and are looking forward to sharing a drink again soon.
