Leighton Sheldon purchased a collection over 100 vintage cards graded by PSA. In the collection were 28 Mickey Mantle cards! The collector was well ahead of the curve and collected vintage cards graded by PSA 25 years ago, before most of the hobby began to do so. The collector lost his eyesight a few years back but still enjoys the hobby with the help of his wife. Despite the vision issues, this collector can still describe his vintage treasures and the vibrant colors!

A 1933 Goudey Sports Kings, including Babe Ruth, was purchased by Leighton this just minutes before today's show started! The set originated from a flea market in Puerto Rico where the owner purchased the cards for only SEVEN dollars in 1987. Yes, you read that correctly; the set was purchased for $7.00. The value is a bit more than seven bucks today, and Leighton proudly purchased all of the cards at the Just Collect store in New Jersey. Check out this fresh-to-the-hobby Sport Kings set!

This has been an absolute wild day in the hobby and there is plenty to talk about! I start with the massive news of the sealed case of 1st Edition Base Set Pokémon that Logan Paul purchased for 3.5 Million Dollars turned out to be fake! Why this is so important is that the box was veriified by the Baseball Card Exchange. Knowing this information it is clear to see how this can have implications on the hobby at large since BBCE has become an industry standard in verification. What we can take away from the situation is that humans can make errors! I absolutely feel bad for all parties involved, and it is definitely not a feel good moment.
Next up we talk about some huge news from the Breaking Community where a well known breaker commited a massive blunder. They were livestreaming a FREE break as part of a giveaway and upon realizing they pulled a MASSIVE hit that could be worth over $20,000, they decided to keep the card. Bad form for the breakers, bad form for the hobby and just not a good look in general.
We wrap up with a story of how I thinned the hoard! I had someone come to the Just Collect/Vintage Breaks office and purchase over 35,000 ungraded vintage cards from me! I came to grips that I wouldn't get the same amount as if I sold them individually, but knowing that I didn't need to go through the cards to price them individually was very appealing. Also knowing that I didn't need to pay eBay fees was a HUGE relief! By recognizing what the buyer could bring to the table in terms of expertise and fair business, I felt great to strike a great deal!

On this week's episode I give my hot take and feelings on the MASSIVE Hobby news of Fanatics purchasing the Topps Sports and Entertainment division! Overall this is exceptionally good news for the Hobby, regardless of what disipline you subscribe to. There will be benefits to the Collector, Investor, Dealer and Business Owners in the space no matter how you look at it. I was surprised that this news came so soon, as I expected this purchase to not happen for 12 or 18 months out. It addresses the concerns that Topps would overproduce as they rode out their remaining days of production. I think all will be well from a production and allocation standpoint.
It will be interesting to follow how Fanatics will handle price points, distribution, and even the ecosystem at large. Will Fanatics enter the breaking space? How will a direct to consumer model will impact how we acquire cards? Can we see a return to price points that we saw years ago? All really interesting talking points that are worth digging into. Whatever the outcome, it is clear that Fanatics is concerned with how things roll out.
We change gears to close things out with the news that our current office building in Somerset, NJ has been sold! This means that we will be moving our operation in the next few months which will allow us to improve just about every area of the Just Collect and Vintage Breaks business. Proud moment to share a collection that required an incredible amount of patience to acquire. It includes cards from the 1930s to the 1950s that have been stored and preserved untouched for over 70 years. The first card from the collection that we discuss is 33 G oudey Ruth #149 Red Background, that seems to have had a bite taken out of the corner. Because of this we will probably end up calling this collection the “Once Bitten” Collection.
The reason I had to be so patient with this collection was because when we first evaluated the collection, all of the cards were raw. After working with the seller, it was important for us to put the most accurate value possible on the cards. We decided to grade the top hits of the collection with PSA, prior to making an offer. While this may cut into our margins, it was important that the seller felt confident that they were getting an accurate evaluation. For Just Collect, we could confirm that we were acquiring confirmed quality with the collection.
The gem of the collection actually graded the best! The #53 Yellow Background Ruth returned from PSA with a grade of 4.5! It is a CERTIFIED MONSTER! As announced on the show, it will become the centerpiece of an incredible Hit Random Break on VintageBreaks.com! As mentioned on a previous episode of TCT, I went into acquiring this collection with intention. It included 3 different Ruths that all have different purposes. What an incredible pick up!

This week is all about my experience at The Philadelphia Sportscard & Memorabilia Show that took place this past weekend at the Valley Forge Casino Resort Convention Center in King of Prussia, PA. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows though, as detailed in my first story of the show.
The first was a collection of 1927 Exhibit cards, which included a Babe Ruth. This was a collection that I really wanted. The seller did mention that he was speaking with a different potential buyer who gave him some estimates. I did some math and I think the number in my head would work, but I didn’t want to be pushy. I then did myself in, I told him to go see the other potential buyer to get their best price and I would beat it by $250. That’s where I went wrong, as I literally let it slip through my fingers. When he came back to my booth, he didn’t have the cards, but instead a knot of cash from the sale that he just made at the Dealer he sold it to. Moral of the story, you can retain some level of aggressive dealing, while still being a nice guy.
Our next story is about Hall of Famer, Rollie Fingers, who we had the pleasure of breaking with in our booth at the Philly Show. Not only were we excited to offer this incredible in person and virtual experience to our viewers, but Rollie was an amazing guest who spent plenty of time with us. Of course we had to ask him about the mustache, which he was a great sport with talking about. It was awesome to hear that there was in fact a moment when he did in fact consider shaving it because he had a poor performance in a double header game.
Our last topic covers how competitive buying cards from the show floor can be. The result of which was an incredible 1952 Bowman Set that I purchased at the show on Saturday. It is currently listed as a set break on VintageBreaks.com! The kicker is that the dealer also had a 1951 Bowman Set. I mentioned to him that I needed to do a bit of research back at my booth and I would come back in 15-20 minutes. You probably see where this is going. In the few minutes that I was gone, the 1951 set had been sold. Make sure you listed through the episode to hear how the buyer was able to gobble this up from under me.

Intention is the topic of the week! No matter what your position in the hobby is, collecting with intention will make for a more purposeful journey to reach your goals. My story of intention begins with Joe Namath, and how I recently acquired my FOURTH graded Namath rookie card. My fourth Namath rookie set off a trickle down effect for the other three Namath rookies that I own. By collecting and dealing with intention, I was able to position each of my four cards exactly where I wanted them.
Our second topic covers expected value and how it relates to your time. With a handful of card shows over the Thanksgiving weekend, I needed to assess how to best use my time. That’s when I reflect on my goals and remind myself that this truly is all about fun and passion. When you decide what card show to attend or what LCS to visit, how do you pick what to do? While your goals with the hobby may influence this answer, for me, the day I stop having fun will be the day I hang things up.

On today’s episode, host Leighton Sheldon discusses how to buy and access ungraded card collections. There are quite a few challenges that you should be aware of if you are in the market, especially if you are acquiring vintage. Our story begins with a collection that Just Collect just took in and the process we used to acquire it. The most important starting point is identifying what cards are in the collection and setting an early expectation of value in the open market. This leads to a more transparent process when you make your offer to purchase. Our process led us to create a spreadsheet with every card itemized with the perceived grade and value, again which adds to transparency and reputation.
We close the show with some big news coming from Netflix.A new show from the team behind Pawn Stars will be coming to the network, featuring Ken Goldin. There has been concern from the community as to how this show could influence and impact the market. Your advice from The Doctor is… Things will be OK. That being said, there will undoubtedly be many more eyes and wallets coming into the hobby. Be ready for there to be a huge impact on some of the big items in the market. Thin your hoard and be prepared for a shift in the market, as without a doubt, WINTER IS COMING.

This week’s episode is all about my trip to the Greater Boston Sports Collectors Convention at the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Massachusetts. Being a long car ride from my home state of NJ, I decided to make a stop at Dugout Dreams to see my friend Sean. His store was awesome and offered a significant selection for hobbyists no matter the budget.
As my sights were turned to the show itself, my best advice to any show goer would be to get there early. You never know what deals you may miss, even if the booths aren’t yet set up. When you are making your first lap around the show, it is probably a good idea to find what peaks your interest and make a note of it. Regardless of budget, being methodical about your first lap could help you out with your handling of the entire show. Make sure to check out the YouTube or Instagram version of this episode to see a few examples of cards that I picked up at the show, including a Joe Namath Rookie!

Today we are taking a look at some of the potential barriers to enter the Trading Card Hobby. It is very clear that it can be intimidating when you see cards selling for hundred, thousands, and even tens of thousands of dollars or more. My best bit of advice would be to find your passion and find your lane. This will help you manage your budget and have fun with the experience. Sometimes, sticking to your passions can pay great dividends, regardless of your budget.
Start at the auction houses, as that is where you can learn about all of the cool stuff that the hobby has to offer. Let’s not forget about good’ol eBay, as there is an incredible amount of listings to view. It’s important to remember what comes along with shipping like delays and of course costs. That’s where your local card stores come into play, as not only can you see the product in person, but also develop relationships that can last for years.
Our next topic discusses budget levels, and how to capitalize on strategy even if you are working with at least $5 a week. It isn’t too hard to even find sealed card packs for a dollar or less at your local card store or show. You never know what you can find in those packs, like an up and coming rookie, or an insert. Finding your passion will help you enjoy the process, and scratch the collecting itch, even if reselling isn’t something you are considering.
We close our show with discussing finding your lane. Obviously, rookie cards are a popular collecting direction, however they are not the only type of card worth exploring. Trust your gut. What cards will bring you joy and what will feed your passion. For me, it was the 2013 Precious Metal Gems Hulk Hogan card, which I purchased that hit many points in my passion.

This week's episode is all about an incredible Road Trip to Yonkers, New York to purchase an amazing collection! It included hundreds of cards from the 1930's including a massive stack of Goudeys! The collection included a ton of Hall of Famers the major highlights including a 1933 #144 Babe Ruth and two 1934 Lou Gehrigs!
One of the best parts of being a Professional Baseball Card Treasure Hunter is learning the history behind the collections. This particular collection was steeped in history as the seller took us down memory lane by sharing the story of her Father and Grandfather in the 1930's. From a pair of 1935 World Series Tickets to non sports cards like the #1 Mickey Mouse Picture Card, there is plenty to enjoy!

This week's episode begins with an incredible piece of sports history! I discuss my experience in a REA Auction for a 1921 World Series Game 1 Ticket Stub, one of only 6 in the PSA Pop Report. Using some foresight and experience earned through some research of the ticket market, this seemed like an absolute no brainer. This stub is absolutely worthy of the museum at Yankee Stadium. To sweeten the haul, I also picked up an original photo from the 1921 World Series, which will make for an amazing companion to the stub, that offers a visual element to that moment in history.
For the next topic I jump over to Modern, where I discuss how I have been spending time in the Kobe market. Focusing on non-Panini, Game Used Jersey Cards, we take a look at how accessible these cards are at multiple tiers. Where with a bit of research and diligence, you can land a great example of a grated patch card that have very limited pops. You may be surprised that there is only a nominal increase in proce between a raw and graded Kobe Jersey card.
Finally, we talk about something that we can all likely relate with. Getting screwed in a card deal. While we don't like to talk about it, it is something that you can help prevent. I share some tips on how to protect yourself out of the gate, and why it may be worth the few extra bucks to secure yourself some security and piece of mind!

Our first topic this week is eBay Comps and the best way to add them to your buying and selling strategy! From the importance of understanding the differences in platforms like eBay, auctions, and social media, comps can end up hurting you if not used properly!
Next up we talk about how we are seeing the Sports Card and Pokémon worlds colliding. With the Pokémon space moving more to grading and long term investing, I am confident we will see our more and more crossover between communitites very soon. This last week we saw a popular Pokémon YouTuber promote a modern pack break campaign that was not recieved well by his community. It looks like sports card content creator strategies may not work in the Pokémon space, making the future exceptionally interesting!

With buying cards being so easy, why is selling them so difficult? Our lead topic this week is how selling our cards can sometimes bring along feelings of shame. I dig into how a strategy of selling when you want to vs selling when you need to is almost guaranteed to yield a more positive result. If we allow the selling process to be dictated by the need to cover things like an upcoming auction bill, we may be backing ourselves into a corner.
The conversation shifts to resources in the community to promote selling product, specifically, the Just Collect Weekly Email Newsletter. This newsletter provides great value, FOR FREE, to our community to help them buy or sell cards. I encourage anyone needing help in this manner to reach out to me directly! Finally we talk about an experience I had at the Philly Card Show where I sold a T206 Ty Cobb. I had the card on display with an asking price of $14,500. I was approached with an offer that didn't meet my needs and I graciously turned it down. This doesn't mean that I didn't want to sell the card, it just meant I didn't want to sell the card at that price. Selling this card on my terms, ultimately lead to that same customer coming back to make a deal by adding some cards he had on hand at the show into the transaction. The patience I had with the sale, resulted in a deal that both parties were happy with. Saying goodbye to the Ty Cobb may have been sad, but there was no shame in selling it.

Welcome to Trading Card Therapy Episode 7!
Coming off the heels of The Philly Show, there is plenty to discuss on this week's episode. While we will get around to a show report in the second half of the show, we begin with a very special card that I picked up from the show floor. I picked up a 1921 Exhibits Babe Ruth SGC Authenticated. While I was walking the floor on Saturday, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this 21 Exhibits Ruth tagged and ready for sale. It didn't take long for me to realize that this card was not in good condition. I would go as far as to even say it was gross. being an owner of a few other 21 Exhibits Ruth cards, I am familiar with thier pops and values, and even for an example in this condition, the price was fair. I was so intrigued as to what happened to this card. At first glance it looks like Medusa may have gotten ahold of it. But after some light negotiation, I was confident about the price and the future potential of the card. I have actually seen worse examples on eBay, but I had to have this one because it was SO BAD IT'S GOOD!
Our second topic is a show report on my experience walking the show and mixing it up with the community and dealers. While many show goers have a strategy to find things fast and early, I discuss the importance of pace, as managing your cash flow is very important over the span of the show. Sometimes it may be a better decision to reserve portions of your budget for opportunities that may arise later in the event. One of my show highlights involves an awesome partnership that we did with Heritage Auctions Sport. My good friend Derek Grady from Heritage helped give away the 6 spots in a 2012 Upper Deck Exquisite Football Box, which I broke with him live on stream.
The box started off really soft and we had our fingers crossed that the box would not be a bust. Then... it happened. We pull an Barry Sanders On Card Auto that was absolutely stunning, but things get better. This 6 card box had an extra card in it. Not only did it have an extra card, but that card happened to be a DAN MARINO! We were absolutely fired up and will be giving this card away in the coming weeks!
As the show progressed, I continued on my hunt to find something special to purchase. This leads to my next bit of advice, which is a best practice that can be applied to any event. It is always a good idea to run through all of the cards available to you. This will help you make the most educated purchase that will satisfy you the most. My second pickup fell in to this category, when I came across a gorgeous 1958 Topps Mantle PSA 7. This card had incredible eye appeal and would not look out of place in a PSA 8 Holder. We have some spicy topics for you this week on Trading Card Therapy! Our main topic of the day revisits manufactured scarcity. There are a few different areas of thought on this topic that are worth digging in to. The first is how the printing machine that makes the cards has such incredible power over the market. Is it the small stamped numbers on a card that give it value? Is it the limited ownership pool of a specific card? Whatever it may be, it is worth taking a step back when considering what the best use of your budget is.
This leads to our next topic about an old friend who reached out to me regarding a Parkhurst Hockey Set that he was thinking about buying. With a budget of over $20,000, we are talking about some serious money. This set just happened to be from a year where there were no stand out rookies or stars. This poses the question of what the intention is in buying the set. Is it a short term flip, long term investment, or a personal favorite? It makes you think how you can be more efficient with your purchases, regardless of your intention.
The last topic is in regards to how we grade cards. Not only with what cards we choose to grade, but which grading house we decide to send them to. Just like purchasing and investing in cards, there is a strategy of grading that will impact not only the value of the card, but your ability to have the card returned to you in a reasonable time frame without breaking the bank. I was on the money with my grade prediction, which absolutely influenced my decision to go with SGC. There is a lot that should go in to your grading decisions, which can result in you making a lot of money!

Leighton explains his perspective on the topic beginning with the initial approach to understanding that market itself. If you wanted to start collecting art, you wouldn’t go after a Rembrandt for your first piece, you would look to what is available and affordable. That being said, the discussion turns to sincere vs manufactured scarcity, which proves to be an interesting perspective on approaching the market. In the end, collect what you love!
Next up we had a treat for those watching the video podcast as Leighton shows off some of his personal collection including a Signed Joe Nameth Rookie and a photograph from Game One of the World Series taken on October 5th, 1921. This is also the first World Series Game that the Yankees Franchise ever played! He ties this back to the premise of collecting what you love, as it will be paired along with a Ticket Stub from the same game, for an incredible combination of memorabilia pieces.

On our second Episode of Trading Card Therapy, Host Leighton Sheldon covers the huge hobby news that dropped earlier in the week. Fanatics has signed a deal with the MLBPA to produce trading cards, which will end a 70 year run by Topps. While there are other deals currently in the works, it will be interesting to see how this will impact Panini as well as the NBA and NFL. Leighton then recaps his pickups of the week which include some purchases made at the Long Island National Card Show as well as some action in Heritage Auctions. Although the second day of the Hofstra Show was cancelled due to weather, it was still a great event that brought out a ton of great people and cards. As the show winds down, Leighton digs into his personal and professional love of purchasing collections of cards. No matter the size of the collection, it is always exciting meeting other hobbyists as you never know what they may have to offer. If you follow Leighton on Instagram you may have seen some cards posted last week including some 1954 - 1956 Topps Baseball including Sandy Koufax and Roberto Clemente Rookie Cards. The same client completed a second transaction with Just Collect, which included hundreds of 1950’s Topps. Welcome to the first ever episode of Trading Card Therapy! Host Leighton Sheldon shares stories of how being introduced to the hobby as a kid set him on a path to pursue his dreams of working in the sports card space.

Leighton also touches on the recent REA Auction for a T206 Honus Wagner SGC 3 which sold for a record $6.6 million dollars and how it could impact the industry.
The show wraps up with Leighton sharing a personal experience when bidding on items through Goldin Auctions. He shares how technical issues with the auction translated into bidders having their entire strategies revealed and disrupted.
