About the Sasha:

SteMargScot is founded by Sasha Jardine, a self described Caribbean-born, colour-fanatic, winter-intolerant, science nerd. Frustrated by the ubiquitous winter coat uniform in stores (especially for men), she found it hard not to notice that outerwear is mostly polyester. Even harder was to be complacent when polyester production increased by 4 million tonnes in 2021, making it the most widely produced fibre. She dreamed about outerwear that challenged status-quo materials, colours, cis gender-designations, and styles. Sasha lives in Toronto and is a science educator, researcher, and published author in drug discovery.

It’s been one year since I shifted from an employee to running my creative business full time!

To celebrate this occasion, I am sharing with you the top three lessons I’ve learned in this first year of being a full time self-employed creative running my own business.

In this episode, we're going to focus on lesson one: how to not fall for the social media trap running your creative practice. As creative, the majority of us use social media to promote our art, services, or products. Through coaching creative practitioners 1:1, I have heard a good dosage of anxiety from my clients that they feel that they are either not doing the right thing or not doing enough on social media.

I feel that angst first hand, as I had also fallen into the rabbit hole of chasing social media numbers at some point in this past year. Today, I am going to share what I’ve learned and how I eventually honed back in my core strength and built a better relationship with social media.

Key highlights of this episode

  • My own experience with social media and how I fell into the trap of chasing the numbers [00:03:30]
  • My mindset shift around social media [00:06:59]
  • How you can also assess your strength and build a better relationship with social media [00:09:45]

Becoming a creative freelancer can be an exciting career move, except no one has really taught us HOW to do this “job”. More often than not, what you’re doing is very different from another creative freelancer. When people congratulate you with messages like “you’re your own boss now”, you secretly cringe and worry about your next week’s schedule, your next month’s paycheck, and that project that you really want to say no to but are scared. Not to mention, you promised yourself that this would be the year to restart on your personal art project, but half a year has gone by and you’ve made zero progress on that.

Ouch. If all these hurt a little, I feel you. As a creative entrepreneur myself, I am pretty much also a freelancer, and I coach other creative freelancers on their journey as well. So today, I invited one of my coaching clients, Tara Dorey, to come on the podcast and discuss the life of being a creative freelancer. As an artist, arts educator, and former Executive Director of a small and mighty arts organization, Tara is someone I deeply admire and have been humbled to partner with on her journey to grow her practice.

Key highlights of this episode

  • Tara’s journey on becoming a full-time creative freelancer
  • Her take on non-linear growth in creative career
  • Tara’s key takeaways from our one-on-one coaching
  • Her ritual organizing her week, setting intention, and celebrating mini-milestones
  • The importance of talking more openly about money and money mindset in the arts

If you’re curious about the final image Tara and I created in our collage, see here.

About the Guest

Tara Dorey is a visual artist with a focus on collaborative and community engaged art making. Her practice includes arts education and facilitation, public art and murals, as well as project management and community engagement, practices that bridge her backgrounds from a Bachelor of Fine Art in Drawing & Painting from OCAD University and a Community Arts Practice Certificate from York University. Currently, Tara is studying a Masters of Education with an Arts in Education emphasis, at OISE, University of Toronto.

Are you one of those people when you focus on one thing for too long, your brain tunes out and you look for other signs, signals, and inspiration to reactivate your energy?

I am willing to bet 50% of us are multi-passionate people. I am, but I had a hard time coming to terms with it earlier in my career, because the “right” way to do the “career thing” seemed to be choosing one path and focus.

As such, I always identified as “the business brain in a room of artists, and artist in a room of business people” .

If you’re nodding hard as you read this, I want you to join us on this latest episode on the Everyday Talent Podcast. I had a great conversation with the quintessentially multi-passionate: Ziyan Hossain.

Ziyan and I met when I was still in my undergrad and he became my mentor. And from day one, he really showed me and embodied the practice of pursuing all of our diverse interests and letting different lanes fuel and inspire each other.

Key highlights of this episode

  • How Ziyan managed to follow his interest and creativity while working as a business strategist
  • Grounding practices for staying driven and inspired
  • How he developed his multifaceted career
  • How his background as an artist/creative influenced him to become an innovator and systems thinker
  • His take on the socially constructed dichotomy between art and business
  • Advice for multifaceted creatives

About the Guest

Ziyan is a design practitioner and artist operating at the intersection of systems thinking, behavioural economics, strategic foresight and human centred design. He is a co-founder at Method Collective and Acting Managing Director at OCAD U CO, the consultancy and innovation arm of OCAD U, Canada's largest and most comprehensive art and design university. He is currently on the Executive Programming Committee for the Association of Professional Futurists, Steering Committee for the Ideas Project with the Ontario Science Centre/Toronto MOCA and has spent over 5 years on the programming committee of the Reel Asian Film Festival.

He plays guitar, bass, synth, has performed with a number of renowned artists from Dhaka and Toronto and has worked with major musical equipment manufacturers including Strandberg Guitars and Eventide Audio. The last release by his band Sundecay was critically acclaimed.

He has worked and presented in Toronto, Montreal, Dhaka, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, London, Stockholm, Belgium, and more.

Since I started coaching, I get lots of people asking me what is coaching? Why are you specifically coaching creatives? What happens during a coaching call?

So I thought - I really should have an FAQ up! But instead of me sitting here and talking about coaching, I thought it would be fun to invite someone who knows me so well to come on the show and take over the interviewer seat. On today’s episode, I invited my dear friend Jessie Lau, who’s also a creative, to do a fun and pointed Q & A with me about what is it like to work with a coach, and what it is like to work with yours truly. Nothing is off limit, and oh yes, we threw in a couple fun stories there for you.

Key Highlight:

  • What are the differences between coaching, therapy and consulting?
  • Misconceptions about coaching
  • What happens in discovery calls?
  • What happens during a coaching call?
  • Coaching structures and framework

About the Guest: Jessie Lau

Jessie Lau likes being around creatives and supporting them. She has been a photographer and assistant to artists and small businesses. Now she has an unrelated full-time job and takes photos when her friends need them. She currently hosts a podcast “I am Thinking About You” where she catches up with her friends.

“Let my work speak for me” is the mantra of many artists’. When we look at an artist's work, we get immersed in the beauty, the craftsmanship, and the style, without knowing the behind-the-scenes process. And it’s not just the process of honing making the art, but also the process of transformation, reinventing oneself, finding belonging, and taking risks.

Today on the podcast, we are going behind the scenes with the celebrated tattooer and multidisciplinary artist Yi Shi. Yi shares with us their journey of building their tattoo practice as a first generation Chinese immigrant in Canada, and their process of continuously learning and expanding their points of view and interests as a multidisciplinary artist.

Key highlights of this episode

  • How Yi started their tattoo practice
  • The balance between abstract thinking and creative practice
  • Advice on working as an immigrant and freelance artist
  • The pros and cons of being self-employed tattoo artist
  • How imposter syndrome showed up for Yi
  • Yi’s ongoing journey in exploring filmmaking and other forms of arts

About the Guest

One of the most common phenomena I see is that creatives are stuck and living and working in a survival mode. This is a prevalent issue largely because we have been conditioned to hustle to make it in the creative industry at the expense of everything else. There are systemic changes that are required, but here is the thing: you can still support yourself on an individual level to move beyond this survival mode and create a life and practice that is full of meaning, fulfillment, and impact.

In this first part of the two-part series, I’m walking you through some of the steps you need to identify if you’re indeed operating in a survival mindset and how you can move beyond surviving and begin thriving.

Key Highlights:

  • how to identify if you’ve been operating in a survival mindset
  • Why some of us continue to operate in a survival mindset even after we gain some success in our career
  • The first and most important step moving beyond the survival mindset

Our creative rituals are a powerful grounding force in our life. Not only does it inspire us to create, but it also helps us connect with others and the world around us in a way that's both nourishing and healing. And Helen's work is all about bringing those two things together—creating spaces that bring people together through the art of pottery, and using tea as a way to connect with one's self and break away from the hustle of everyday life. And today, on this special episode recorded onsite at Secret Teatime, Helen will be joining to share her journey of her creative practice.

Key highlights of this episode

  • How Helen started Secret Teatime and explored her passion of making tea and pottery
  • Helen’s journey of finding a sense of belonging in her creative rituals
  • How making tea helped ground her through burnouts
  • Helen’s take on the socially constructed hierarchy of high and low art

Helen Kong is the owner of Secret Teatime, a clay maker space hidden in Scarborough, Toronto. She specializes in making teawares for Japanese and Chinese Tea. She is also an ongoing student/practitioner of Chado (The Japanese Way of Tea). The way of tea is her guide in life and in her creative practice. Tea has been the source of inspiration and sense of grounding during times of life/creative burnout. Her practice is a lifelong journey of learning and development. Currently, Helen is stepping into a new role in organizing collaborative group projects and creating multisensory tea experiences in hopes to mutually promote and support local makers and small businesses.

I'm sure you've heard the saying that "artists suffer for their art." You have to be a tortured soul, and you have to be able to push through the pain.

What if there are a lot of bs in that narrative?

What is a more holistic way to look at creatives’ relationship with mental health?

My guest, Chad Hopson, shares with us his journey of self-discovery and helping others to uncover their creativity. We chatted about the good, the bad, and the raw stuff about diving into a creative pursuit, and how might that pursuit allow us to achieve greater awareness of ourselves and the world around us.

Key highlights of this episode

  • Chad shares his journey and life lessons on discovering himself through creativity
  • How he deals with difficult life situations
  • How the designer mindset helps him in different life aspects
  • The role of mental health in his creative career
  • Advice for people in nurturing their creative potential

Key Takeaway:

  • Making art can improve our mental health because it allows us to give voice to feelings and ideas that are difficult to put into words.
  • Define success for yourself, and never use a broad term that everyone else uses as a goal.

Chad Hopson is a multidisciplinary artist focusing on mental health and the power of creativity. His brand So Indifferent provides graphic design services, but at its core, it aims to help others realize their own creative potential.

For a long time, I've been thinking about how I can create an elevator pitch to introduce myself in a succinct and clear way. And if you're a multifaceted creative like me, you know it's difficult to sum up who you are in a sentence. It forces us to take something complex and boil down into something very simple. But why do most of us still spend so much time on our elevator pitches? And why do we feel anxious when others fail to recognize our complexity in one short paragraph? In today's episode, I'm going to talk about exactly that, and why you should get rid of your pitch today and ways to shift your energy so that you show up more powerfully.

Key Highlights:

  • a fun story about how I overcome the need for coming up with an elevator pitch for myself
  • My hypothesis on why people obsess over their elevator pitches
  • How you can address issues a pitching your work to impress others or collaborate with potential clients
  • A better approach of showing up powerfully and authentically

Key Takeaways:

  • Everything that you say reveals a little bit about you and no one paragraph in the world will need to totally represent you.
  • Make genuine connections by being a good listener, a natural conversationalist and by being honest about who you are, rather than boxing yourself in with a few sentences.

  • I’m sharing the bucket approach and other practical tips in implementing intentionality and directionality of your creative business

Seeking perfection is something that a lot of creatives do and struggle with. But chasing perfectionism often causes us to be afraid of trying and failing, keeping us in our comfort zones. In this episode, I chat with Vanessa Lee, a former client of mine, about her experience of going through my 1:1 coaching program and how it helped her overcome perfectionism, develop a healthy relationship with her self-critic, and work with her money mindset.

Key highlights of this episode

  • Vanessa shares challenges she faced last year as she navigated a job transition
  • How she overcame perfectionism and developed a healthy relationship with her self-critic
  • How she deal with scarcity mindset and improved her relationship with money
  • Changes in Vanessa’s creative career and life after coaching
  • Vanessa talks about her insights on creative rest

Key Takeaways:

  • Self-critic is a part of us, but it doesn’t speak any truth to our ability as creatives. We can learn to build a distance to our self-critic’s voice.
  • Creativity is like a muscle. It's not something we can overwork and use all the time, but it is something we can build. It's something that also needs rest.

Naturally curious about all things visual, design, and the process of creating anything and everything, Vanessa always knew she would walk the path that encompassed all that. Recently making the transition from graphic design, Vanessa is now taking strides in user interface design in her current role as Designer at Accenture Interactive in Toronto, Canada.

Natural talent is a topic that every creative person likes to talk about, but also secretly fears it. We fear it because there is always a tiny voice in our head that reminds us: you’re no genius. In this episode, I share with you what to do when the thought “what if I’m just mediocre” creeps up, and the steps we can take to actually realize our talent and improve our craft.

Key highlights of this episode

  • Is the belief "I'm just mediocre" part of your “operating system”, even when you don’t notice it? I share the short term and long term impact this can have on our creative career and life
  • Realistic steps you can take to cope with the fear of being mediocre and develop a healthy relationship with your inner self-critic
  • How to start developing a healthy relationship with your inner self-critic
  • I walk you through my unique colour theory metaphor on how to grow your creative career by embracing exactly who you are and dissect what are the three primary colours you need to build awareness of in your creative career

Key Takeaways:

  • We tend to work hard to compensate for the feeling of not being good enough. I will elaborate on why this tactic does not work in the long term.
  • Self-critic is not always there to destroy you. Understanding and acknowledging it will help you be more creative.

In this day and age, a lot of us want to work abroad and develop a career that is not bound to a location. But how do we actually start? What are some obstacles and challenges we can expect, and what mindsets will get us through the ups and downs? On this very first interview episode on the podcast, I talk with Grace Phan-Nguyen. Grace shares her trajectory of starting her career in theater in Canada, moved to Germany during the global pandemic, and then self-started a career on Youtube. Today she manages two well-loved Youtube food channels. My Name is Andong and Made with Lau, and continues to cultivate a career of learning driven by her curiosity, humility, and self-care.

Key highlights:

  • Grace shares her story and key mindsets that motivated her to leave a structure that didn’t serve her anymore, re-started in Germany, and eventually carved out her path on Youtube.
  • For those of you interested in starting a career on Youtube, Grace shares her insights on the possible routes and what to focus on when you’re starting.
  • As both Grace and I are creatives who manage our own schedule and rhythm of working, we exchange how we actively set boundaries, give ourselves permission to rest, and treat rest as a form of resistance.

Connect with Grace via Instagram @phantagepoint. Check out her work on Youtube at Made with Lau and My Name is Andong. She also has a cool podcast Our Relationship To, where four friends in three countries come together to talk about their long-distance relationship experiences and their interests.

When we are making a risky move in our career, we tend to get anxious about telling our family out of the fear that they would disprove or judge us. In this episode, I spilled the tea on how I told my mom about moving on from my full-time job recently, and how did I actually take the steps to assess whether that big move was right for me at this stage in my creative career.

Key highlights of this episode

  • My story on quitting her full-time job to run her business full time & how I told my mom about it
  • How to take a “big risk” in your career by doing the inner work in order to help you feel safe when taking this risk
  • How we can move on from seeking approval from our family and make aligned career decisions

Key Takeaways:

  • Telling our family about your career move often feels hard because we want to look for validation from them, so it’s crucial that we validate ourselves first
  • When it comes to risk-taking, it’s not about taking reckless risks or avoiding risks altogether, but it’s about managing a portfolio of decisions, where some of which will feel risky but it will ultimately push you out of your comfort zone and create new possibilities
