On this week's episode, we are talking about change. Not the change that gets to come with growth, but the change that can only happen from the Holy Spirit.

As spouses, we get to realize that we cannot change our spouse. Their personality, standards, behaviors, and attitude will be the same after the wedding as it was while you were dating. This is why it is important to decide before you get into a relationship, what you will allow or not, what you will be ok with or not. We need to stop insisting that our spouses are just like us.

Change can happen, but it mostly comes from the Holy Spirit, not nagging. Patience and communication are keys to a successful marriage, no matter how big the gap looks when you first get together.

1 Peter 3: 1-7 "Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers." Happy Easter! The Lord is risen!

We are so excited to share our chat with our good friends Levi and Shannae. They have been through some battles, and they wanted to share their journey and their victory. We also talk about our past interview with Dustin and Torrie (Ep 60).

This episode talks about the serious subject of pornography. It breaks our hearts to learn how many deal with this, and we want to give hope to all of those that are wanting to break the cycle and grip of it.

Here are some statistics that we shared: (from an article from May 2022)

  1. Over 40 million Americans are regular visitors to porn sites. The average visit lasts 6 minutes and 29 seconds
  2. There are around 42 million porn websites, which totals around 370 million pages of porn
  3. The porn industry’s annual revenue is MORE than the NFL, NBA, and MLB combined. It is also more than the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC.
  4. 47% of families in the United States reported that pornography is a problem in their home.
  5. Pornography use increases the marital infidelity rate by more than 300%.
  6. Eleven is the average age that a child is first exposed to porn, and 94% of children will see porn by the age of 14.
  7. 56% of American divorces involve one party having an “obsessive interest” in pornographic websites.
  8. 70% of Christian youth pastors report that they have had at least one teen come to them for help in dealing with pornography in the past 12 months.
  9. 68% of church going men and over 50% of pastors view porn on a regular basis. Of young Christian adults 18-24 years old, 76% actively search for porn.
  10. 59% of pastors said that married men seek their help for porn use.
  11. 33% of women aged 25-and-under search for porn at least once per month.
  12. Only 13% of self identified Christian women say they never watch porn – 87% of Christian women have watched porn.
  13. 55% of married men and 25% of married women say they watch porn at least once a month.
  14. 57% of pastors say porn addiction is the most damaging issue in their congregation. And 69% say porn has adversely impacted the church.
  15. Only 7% of pastors say their church has a program to help people struggling with pornography.

What do you say when something your spouse enjoys doesn't interest you? Do you feel like you have to go along with your spouse's plans? When you have these types of disagreements, it is normal to disagree. How you handle it is what matters. Creating a safe space for your spouse to have different interests or activities is a healthy part of every marriage. The key is to ensure that those differences do not take place of, or diminish your marriage. As a follow up from our last episode, we wanted to highlight that there are other options available to all of us. Many times we fall into patterns because that is what we were taught, or experienced. It doesn't have to be like that any more. We can be changed by the power and encounter of God. That encounter can change our patterns and our past. Remember, just because that is how it's always been, doesn't mean that it has to go that way still.

In life, relationships, and in the Kingdom, it is important to know what are tools are, and also to make sure that they are ready for use. That is what we are talking about this week. All of the 'tools' that you have in your arsenal, or tool shed, should be well-maintained and ready for use. Also, just because you have mastered one tool, or strategy, it doesn't mean that you won't need to use it again sometime in the future. We can't make progress if we aren't consistent. We all know that life happens. It doesn't matter if you are married, single, a parent, or friends, life happens, and will it will try to knock you down and out. At times, we refer to that as 'Going through the suck', because those are the moments that suck you down and suck your time, energy, attention, and sometimes finances. When those moments hit, or after, you need to take time to reconnect with your spouse. Take time to date your spouse again. All married couple should continue to date each other, but it is especially important in these times that you need to reconnect after a trying or tough time. When you do go on your dates, be mindful to be in the moment with them. Be present and purposeful. So often we hear about the 'No's' of a relationship - You can't do this, you shouldn't do that, avoid this, etc. When starting a relationship, or getting ready to, it is important and helpful to focus instead on what can be done. Finding the 'Yes' of the matter. This shift in focus will help align your priorities and give you a more positive attitude. By focusing on the 'Yes', you can start building and walking into what your are aiming for. One of our favorite illustrations on this is to think of a field, rather than focusing on what you can't do outside of the fence, look at what can be done, or needs to be done, inside the fence. What is the difference between motivation and discipline? How would you define them? When we have talked about motivation, we have realized that it is fleeting and fickle. Motivation is not consistent. Discipline, on the other hand, is what gets you moving when you don't want to. Discipline helps drive you to do the hard thing over the fun or easy thing. Life is full of choices and feelings, and we get to make the decisions on how we will walk out this life.

What steps are we taking to walk out what we want to see in our lives? Yes, God can abundantly bless us and our endeavors, but we get to prepare and start walking towards that goal. For instance, if you want to be blessed with better finances, what steps are you taking to prepare for a blessing of increased finances?

Many questions come up about what is our purpose: Who are we; Who am I; What should I/we be doing? Our purpose is found in God, He is our purpose. Our identity and purpose is found in Him, not in what we do or don't produce. Often times, people try to complicate things and struggle over the small details, but God just wants us to chase after Him and serve Him. Once we sort that out, the details will fall into place. We are not saying that it will be easy, or there will not be a struggle, but with God, we have the strength, the wisdom, the ability to overcome.

Do you have a blended family? We do. Before we got married, and after, we did our best to work out how to be successful in our blended family, and what would work best for us. Many questions come to mind with blended families like traditions, vacations, schools, and discipline. Some topics are easier than others, but they all add to the outcome.

We also talk about what leads to many blended families - divorce. What does that mean according to the Bible vs today?

Mark 10: 2-12
'Pharisees came up, and to test Him they began asking, “Is it permitted for a man to divorce his wife?”

What does it mean to carry your mantle? What does that look like? It is different for all of us, because we all have different roles to play in life and in the Kingdom of God. If you take on the mantle of something such as a profession or an important job, you take on the responsibilities and duties which must be fulfilled by anyone who has this profession or job.
