September is recognized as Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month. PAD, a circulatory condition that affects an estimated 8.5 million in the U.S., is often an underdiagnosed condition. However, through early detection/screening this condition can be treated when appropriately indicated through Peripheral Vascular Intervention (PVI). Peer Review is one way to ensure patient care and safety for appropriate diagnosis and treatment options. Safeguarding the patients involves the impartial evaluation by experienced professionals, a comprehensive approach that encompasses proper training/credentialing, adherence to protocols, and a commitment to patient-centered care.
Through Corazon's Peer Review and Accreditation services and SCAI as a fundamental partner, being proactive in the advancement and seeking proper measures can lead to continuous growth of your program. This safeguard approach is key not only during PAD Awareness Month but every day for the patients treated.

Is your facility at the level of staffing you believe is beneficial for your team?
There are various reasons why staffing has been a great challenge to healthcare facilities lately. Many leaders are seeing staff burnout from early retirement to even leaving the industry entirely. And with the rise of telehealth, in-person visits have some impact of hospital needs. These are just some of the many challenges healthcare leaders are seeing. However, there are ways to enhance recruitment efforts to ensure proper staff size at your facility in such a competitive market.

Since the first transcatheter heart valve (TAVR) was performed over 20 years ago, there have been tremendous advances in therapeutic modalities and technologies for valvular heart disease. And the eligible populations, which were limited to those who were either prohibitive or high surgical risk, have broadened. We have seen a paradigm shift in the management of valvular disease and TAVR has gained substantial popularity, especially since it has exhibited high rates of procedural success and low rates of peri-procedural complications.
As innovation and technology advance and research evolves, patients with valvular heart disease are being offered less invasive interventions.
Listen in on industry experts for this Corazon-moderated interview with Dr. Brian Hummel, a Board Certified Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Bart Berndt, Executive Director of Surgery and Cardiology, as we discuss current indications and limitations on the management of valvular heart disease including:
Large Vessel Occlusion strokes (LVOs) account for approximately 20% to 36% of acute ischemic strokes but results in up to 90% of acute ischemic deaths and 60% of post ischemic stroke disability. Treatment with mechanical thrombectomy is now the Gold Standard, yet we are still struggling to get patients to the comprehensive stroke center or thrombectomy capable stroke center in a timely manner to ensure intervention eligibility. The goal is to improve operational efficiencies within your stroke program to increase the number of patients who are eligible and have positive interventional outcomes. While overall program achievement is usually a multidisciplinary group effort, the Stroke Coordinator is often the driving force. What does it take for the Stroke Coordinator to lead these efforts?
During this podcast, Corazon Senior Vice President, Michelle Luffey and Penn State Health Stroke Program Coordinator, Cesar Velasco discuss:

Choosing an accreditation provider goes beyond fulfilling state requirements. It allows your specialty program to reach the highest level of clinical quality, financial performance, and operational outcomes. When it comes to accreditation, it is not just a one-and-done endeavor. Accreditation mirrors an organization's commitment to lasting quality. Aside from seeing how a program can improve, accreditation can also highlight what a program is doing well so that standardization can stretch across multiple programs.

Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the US, but can we do more to improve those statistics? The answer is yes! Clinical trials have validated significant benefits of Thrombectomy when available for the treatment of stroke. The DAWN and DEFUSE-3 Trials have expanded the window for Endovascular Thrombectomy up to 24 hours for patients with Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO). While LVOs only account for approximately 1/3 of all strokes, they account for 60% of all disability and 90% of all mortality. Endovascular Thrombectomy can change those outcomes.
Benefits of an immediate treatment response to a stroke or “brain attack” have paralleled the benefits of coronary intervention in treating a “heart attack.” With this medical evolution, the use of clot busters, angioplasty, and stents are quickly becoming the standard arsenal for stroke treatment – and, as in coronary intervention, time is of the essence.
With so much potential for quality outcome improvement, society-sponsored advocacy is proving very successful in influencing legislative changes, including mandating suspected Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO) patients be taken to the nearest Thrombectomy Capable Center. Even where legislative changes have not yet occurred, many EMS providers have begun adopting these protocols. The potential loss of this inbound EMS traffic may affect your bottom line.

Organizations that have already completed the foundational work associated with a formal stroke program are often much better positioned for neuro-interventional program implementation than they perceive. Position your neuroscience program for future growth and success by adding Thrombectomy!
