I have had a stroke in early November and have aphasia - language is jumbled up in speaking or writing. You'll note my podcasts will sound differently, but it stills me!)

My name is Tara and I’m coming to you from somewhere near the Rocky Mountains. I like to see myself as middle aged but my chances of ever becoming a centenarian are very, very remote, so I’ve accepted that I have many more yesterdays than I do tomorrows. And I’m OK with that. I’m a collector of stories, both my own and those of others. Some are amusing, some are downright funny. Some are moving and hopefully, they all inspire you in some way. It is, after all, where our stories meet that compassion and community take place. When I’m asked to share a little about myself I say, I met my husband at a nudist park, it turns out he was a rock star and then I decided to become a priest! And people say you should write a book, I’m much too lazy to write a book. So. Welcome to You Should Write a Book ~ the Podcast.

I have aphasia. I am privileged because I can speak even though it is difficult sometimes, but I can get my message out. Imagine that you have your mouth is covered and you can only making intelligible sounds or even no sounds at all. And imagine that maybe you can't write or draw a picture. How do you let people know what you need? Or want? How do you let people know that you are in there? How do you let people know who you am? Do you love the indoors? Do you like comedy or fantasy movies? Do you like opera or Rush? Do you like coffee or tea, do you watch the news routinely or do you love a good potiical debate? Do you go to a church or a synagogue or do you align with the teachings of Budda?

You are in there. I see you. And you are known, I promise.

A friend told me once that he, having learned French for years, that he was legit bilingual once he had started dreaming in French.
I dreamed in the language of aphasia. I was speaking garbled, and hesitantly. I am dreaming in a language that only I am fluent, and I are in fluently and in a language that I never hope to know again.
It's all Greek to me!

Most of my missing words came back in with a few seconds or with an a conversation. But there are some words that have become a white box of nothingness. There is no word. As if I've never heard it, and yet as I'm sure that I once them gone.
When the other missing words and the I invite their being congratulations and even think I deserve it. But in those, the words that have lived an the white boxes for hours and days, I'm not feeling to celebrate. Or to feeling celebrating.
I'm experiencing grief and they worry that one day my brain will only filled by white, empty boxes where words once lived.

Last night I had all of the words that I wanted to speak in the podcast. It was so clear in my mind. For a few hours I didn't speak at all - because when I don't speak, I pretend that I'm "normal" for a while. One I record the podcast it's all jumbled even though I thoughts are all in my mind.
I want to inspire people who have aphasia and talk about common experiences. I'd like to find a way to communicate to either patients, too. Recording, or conversation or typing. Don't know how to figure that yet lol.
Thank you for loving me.

My words glitch for me, and in my speech and in my writing. But I'm still the same person and have the right to be treated respectfully. I have autonomy, the right to make my decisions, and the right to have a bad day. And thank you for Grammarly making the podcast blurb make sense.

Oh, allergies. They're so much fun! When I began using medical gloves at my job at a group home in my early 20's my body decided that latex could be added to my long list of allergies. Listen as I share my story of what came next...

Yes. Let's have a conversation about suicide. When Twitch died in December of 2022 millions of conversations were started about how he ended his own life. And that was a good thing. But, let's keep the conversation going. While I don't have all of the answers, no one really does, I can share some insights into the aftermath of a suicide, suicidal ideation, and where help can be found.

Do you remember Eeyore from the Winnie the Pooh comics? Have you ever noticed that his friends don't just leave him to be on his own or stop asking if he wants to join in, even though he is clearly depressed? That's one of the ways you can help someone in your life who is like Eeyore, be their Winnie! And, if you're like Winnie to someone who's struggling, there is help for you, too.

Come with me on a journey to find Spirit in the gift of words. Poetry, prose, songs, they all have so much power and when they are done well, they can change how we think and feel about ourselves and the world around us. In this episode we'll listen to the words of Maya Angelou, Denise Levertov, with passages from the Song of Songs and the Therigatha and, even the Book of Common Prayer lol.
If you are seeking Spirit, come.

Many people, most people in fact, have a deep compassion for "the poor". We express that compassion in supporting the charities that in turn offer support to them but we really don't have any idea about what their lives are really like.
I do.
So I thought that I would share some of the day to day struggles of those who have moved from being broke to being poor. They are not the same.

In the first episode I laid the groundwork about the lessons that had been instilled in me - Be a good girl and always respect your elders. In the second of three parts I talked about the consequences of living those lessons. Join me as I share the process of unlearning the lessons of my youth and know that I, like you, am a work in progress. So let's journey together, shall we?

Trigger Warning
(descriptions of sexual assault and partner abuse)
In the First episode in this series I talked about the lessons that I learned as a child. Be a good girl and always respect your elders. I also learned that my body was something I had and that men wanted - but had yet to learn how it all worked. This second in the series talks about how those lessons I internalized as a child lived themselves out as I moved into adulthood - and the results were not good ones.

It is important that you heed the trigger warning if you feel like hearing such descriptions might put you in a vulnerable place yourself. I'd rather have you well than have you listen.

For those of you who choose to move forward,  let's continue the journey and find out the consequences of being a good girl...

Growing up in the 70's and 80's certain lessons were instilled in me - be a good girl and always respect your elders. It seems simple enough but when combined with becoming aware of my body - and men reacting to it - those lessons created their own sometimes sinister consequences.
In this episode I do talk about abuse - not directly but indirectly so proceed with caution.
