Brittany Jones-Cooper is a freelance writer, journalist, host and lifestyle reporter based in New York City with more than 15 years of experience working in television, digital media and podcasting. A native of Omaha, she is a 2008 Broadcasting graduate of the UNL College of Journalism & Mass Communications. After graduation from UNL, she spent a few months as a local reporter at KETV in Omaha before taking on the role as Katie Couric's personal production assistant at The CBS Evening News. From there, she joined Couric at her daytime talk show as an associate producer. As a lifestyle reporter for Yahoo, she was a host for the "Build Series" featuring long-form interviews with actors, musicians, athletes and authors, and later hosted a show called "Unmuted" which provided a platform for underrepresented voices. Her latest podcast, called "Ali In Me," will debut later this year. She spoke with Campus Voices as part of a series on the future of the media and communications industries.
Tia Newcomer is the Chief Executive Officer for CaringBridge, based in Minneapolis. Her career has spanned both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors and includes experience in healthcare, technology and consumer packaged goods. She is a 1995 graduate of the UNL College of Journalism & Mass Communications where she majored in Advertising. She was recently selected as one of Top 100 People to Know in 2023 by Twin Cities Business. She spoke with Campus Voices as part of a series on the future of the media and communications industries.
Emily Doskow is the Chief Marketing Officer for Leo Burnett, based in Chicago, where she leads new business and growth efforts for the agency's U.S. operations. She is a 2002 graduate of the UNL College of Journalism & Mass Communications where she majored in Advertising and Public Relations. She was recently selected as one of Ad Age's Leading Women of 2023. She spoke with Campus Voices as part of a series on the future of the media and communications industries.
Dionne Searcey won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting as part of a team for The New York Times. She is the author of the book "In Pursuit of Disobedient Women" and formerly worked as a U.S. politics reporter and the West Africa bureau chief covering stories in 25 countries in West and Central Africa. She is a 1993 graduate of the College of Journalism & Mass Communications where she majored in News/Editorial Journalism. She spoke with Campus Voices as part of a series on the future of the media and communications industries.
UNL College of Journalism & Mass Communications alum Tyler Riewer is Creative Director for charity: water, a nonprofit organization supporting global sustainability in the water sector. He was back on the UNL campus as the featured speaker for the E. N. Thompson Forum on World Issues on November 7, 2022, and he was a guest on KRNU's "Campus Voices" program the next day.
Author Candice Millard visited the university as a guest speaker for the E.N. Thompson Forum on September 28, 2022. Her address was called ""A Clear and Steady Eye: Storytelling and Our Shared History" and it was featured as an episode of 90.3 KRNU's Campus Voices program following her appearance.

A discussion of media ethics and how to determine the validity of what news consumers read, watch and listen to. The program featured Jody Beck, an alum of the UNL College of Journalism & Mass Communications, and now a Community Education Volunteer with the Freedom Forum in Washington, D.C., who was on the UNL campus to speak to students in the College of Journalism & Mass Communications, and Jessi McCarthy, the Freedom Forum’s Outreach Educator, who joined the discussion from their Washington office.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, UNL’s student news outlet, The Daily Nebraskan, created a COVID-19 coverage team to bring more transparency to the coronavirus situation on campus and in Nebraska. KRNU's Geoff Exstrom visited with one of the co-editors for that team - David Berman - about their coverage and the response to it.
On the weekend of KRNU's 50th anniversary in February of 2020, former UNL Broadcasting Department Chairman, Larry Walklin, visited Campus Voices to discuss the station's creation and history. Walklin was in charge of the Broadcasting major at the time the station signed on in 1970 and was instrumental in its creation. He served as the station's first general manager from 1970 until 1995.
Walter “Ted” Carter, Jr., began his tenure as the eighth president of the University of Nebraska system on Jan. 1, 2020. In this episode of Campus Voices, he shared his thoughts on his first ten months in office and his vision for the future of the system as detailed in the University's "Five Year Strategy."
USC's Election Cybersecurity Initiative established a lofty goal for 2020: to provide online training on election security in all 50 states for election workers, state officials, media representatives and the general public. Faculty members from UNL's College of Law and College of Journalism & Mass Communications joined the online panel for Nebraska's training session on June 18th. The Initiative's director, Adam Clayton Powell III, is featured in this episode of "Campus Voices" to discuss the genesis of the project and some of the issues they cover. Faced with unexpected restrictions due to COVID-19, the Vision Maker Media organization decided to move its Film Fest online, which actually afforded opportunities for a wider audience and participation from more filmmakers than would have been possible in-person.
Dr. Shari Veil began her role as the new Dean of the UNL College of Journalism & Mass Communications on July 1. A native of North Dakota, Veil returns to the Great Plains from the University of Kentucky where she served as the associate dean for undergraduate affairs in the College of Communication and Information and chair and professor in the Department of Communication. She discussed her vision for UNL's College of Journalism & Mass Communications and the state of the various media industries.
