Habari Gani! Umoja! We always start off with the greeting of Habari Gani, which means (What’s up? What’s the word? What’s the news?) Today, we begin with UMOJA!
Today is the first day of Kwanzaa! Kwanzaa was created to introduce and reinforce seven basic values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing family, community and culture among African American people as well as Africans throughout the world African community. These values are called the Nguzo Saba which in Swahili means the Seven Principles. Developed by Dr. Karenga in 1966, the Nguzo Saba stand at the heart of the origin and meaning of Kwanzaa, for it is these values which are not only the building blocks for community but also serve to reinforce and enhance them. This year, we celebrate the 51 year anniversary of these Principles.
A Green Smoothie A Day!
You may have heard the old phrase, an apple a day keeps the doctor away! Well I’m going to add a twist to that phrase and say, a GREEN SMOOTHIE a day, keeps the doctor away. As a Certified Running Coach and College Chemistry Professor, I see the importance of having this simple meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The routine of constantly eating a heavy breakfast will eventually catch up with you and cause you to feel sluggish and lack the ability to move on to complete your morning task. Instead of eating bacon, pancakes and eggs for breakfast, switch it up with a green smoothie. Here’s the recipe for it:
Take a handful of kale and or spinach
8 oz of almond milk (unsweetened)
A scoop of your favorite Protein powder
One cut up frozen banana slices
½ cup of peaches
A few dates
Blend all the ingredients together in a blender or nutribullet! Enjoy!
